00:00Hi kids, today we will learn more on division.
00:06Let's start.
00:08We are starting with a simple example.
00:12We have to distribute 284 marbles in 12 children, then how many marbles will each child get?
00:22Here we need to divide 284 by 12.
00:29Here 12 is a divisor and 284 is our dividend.
00:36We can write them like this.
00:38Now the first digit of dividend is less than the divisor which is 12.
00:46So take the first two digits of dividend that is 28, now we have to divide 28 by 12.
00:55So find the multiple of 12 which is close to 28, 12 multiply with 2 is 24.
01:05So 24 is the nearest multiple of 12 which is close to 28.
01:11So write 2 in the quotient and write 24 below 28.
01:18Now subtract 24 from 28, we get 4.
01:24Now bring down the next digit in dividend, here it's 4.
01:31Now we have to divide 44 by 12, find the multiple of 12 which is nearest to 44, also less than
01:4244, 12 multiply by 3 is 36.
01:50So 36 is the nearest multiple of 12.
01:54So write 3 in the quotient and 36 below 44.
02:02Subtracting 36 from 44, we get 8.
02:07Now we have to divide 8 by 12, but 8 is less than 12 and all the digits in dividend are
02:15divided now.
02:18No more digit is there to bring down.
02:21So 8 is our remainder and 23 is our quotient.
02:27That is if we divide 284 marbles in 12 children, each child will get 23 marbles and 8 marbles
02:39will be left.
02:42Now let's learn more on division.
02:46We have to divide 400 by 4, here the first digit in dividend is equal to divisor which
02:55is 4.
02:574 multiplies with 1 equals 4.
03:01So write 1 in the quotient and write 4 below the first digit of dividend.
03:08Now subtracting 4 from 4, we get 0.
03:13So write 0 below 4.
03:17Now the digits left in the dividend are only 0 and in such case where the digit or digits
03:24left in dividend are only zeros, we can just append them to the quotient like this and
03:33our quotient is 100 and the division is complete.
03:37We have divided all the digits of dividend.
03:42So 400 divided by 4 is 100.
03:48Let's see more examples like this.
03:51We have to divide 360 by 9.
03:56We cannot divide first digit of dividend that is 3 by 9 as it's smaller than other dividend.
04:05So we can divide the next two digits of dividend that is 36.
04:13Now think which multiple of 9 is closest to 36?
04:189 multiplied with 4 is 36.
04:23So write 36 below 36 and write 4 in the quotient and now subtract 36 from the first two digits
04:33of dividend.
04:36We are left with 0.
04:39Now the only number left in the dividend is 0 and in such cases when the number left in
04:46dividend is only 0, we just append it to the quotient like this and our quotient is 40.
04:55So 360 divided by 9 is 40.
05:02So kids, whenever the number left in dividend is only 0 or zeros, we can just append them
05:11to the quotient.
05:14Now let's learn more on division.
05:17Now we have to divide 361 by 4.
05:22Now we cannot divide the first digit of dividend that is 3 as it's smaller than the divider
05:29which is 4.
05:32So we will divide the first two digits of dividend which is 36.
05:384 multiplied by 9 equals 36.
05:43So write 36 below 36 and 9 in the quotient.
05:48We got 0 on subtracting.
05:52Now bring down the last digit that is 1.
05:57Now here is something we need to understand.
06:01We are left with 1 which is less than divisor but it's a digit from the dividend which is
06:07yet to be divided so it's not a remainder.
06:13We have to divide it with 4.
06:15So here what we do is we find a multiple of 4 which is less than 1 and that is 4 multiplied
06:25by 0 equals 0.
06:28So write 0 below 1 and 0 in the quotient.
06:33Now our quotient is 60 and remainder is 1.
06:39Now let's take one more example of this kind.
06:44Let's divide 653 by 13.
06:49Now we cannot divide first digit of dividend so we will divide first two digits.
06:57Multiple of 13 which is nearest to 65 is 65.
07:0213 multiplied by 5 equals 65.
07:07So write 5 in the quotient and 65 below 65.
07:14We got 0 on subtracting.
07:17Now bring down the last digit that is 3.
07:23Now here is something we need to understand.
07:26We are left with 3 which is less than divisor but it's a digit from the dividend which is
07:33yet to be divided so it's not a remainder.
07:38We have to divide it with 13.
07:41So here what we do is we find a multiple of 13 which is less than 3 and that is 13 multiplied
07:52by 0 equals 0.
07:55So write 0 in the quotient and 0 below 3.
08:00Now our quotient is 50 and remainder is 3.
08:05So kids now you know how to divide.
08:10Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
08:13Bye-bye.
