00:00Today's opening of school classes nationwide has presented newly minted education chief
00:09secretary Sonny Angara with one among a multitude of overriding problems that need attention
00:16and resolutions filling out the classroom backlog.
00:20Good evening, I am William Theo and this is PTV News Now.
00:24The Department of Education vows to work closely with the Department of Public Works and Highways
00:29to build more classrooms and fill out the backlog much quicker.
00:33Newly installed DepEd chief secretary Sonny Angara admitted in an ambush interview this
00:38morning in Carmona National High School the validation process in the procurement is chiefly
00:45to blame for the extended delays in classroom construction and completion.
00:49The DepEd chief is upbeat in straightening out the validation process by year-end so
00:55rushed construction could begin in January next year.
00:58Angara said at least 159,000 classrooms need to be built this year at a rate of 12,000
01:05annually and costing 2 million pesos each.
01:09Meanwhile, he added the funds for repairs to school buildings and classrooms damaged
01:13by Typhoon Karina are available.
01:18A few seconds of a warning air raid siren presaged the artillery strike.
01:24A smartphone video account documented the hit from afar that left 11 kids playing soccer
01:30in a field dead after the blast.
01:32It was the deadliest single-day hit on Israelis since October 7 last year that left a little
01:38over 1,200 Jews of all ages, genders and sizes dead after a murderous street by Hamas fighters
01:45inside Israel.
01:47Despite denials from Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed and Lebanon-based militia, the Israeli government
01:53seconded by the U.S. State Department and the Pentagon, claims Hezbollah for this deadly
01:58and dastardly deed that many military analysts find odd.
02:02The Israeli defense forces have over the last couple of hours unleashed a series of retaliatory
02:08strikes deep into Lebanon territory, which we will bring to you once images are in.
02:17With exactly 100 days left before America heads out to voting centers and polling stations
02:22to choose their next leader, the race is heating up for the presidency between presumptive
02:27Democratic presidential bet Kamala Harris and Republican bet former President Donald
02:33J. Trump.
02:34And both camps have sharpened their attacks against each other as they seek to appeal
02:38to independents and those outside their bases.
02:42VOA's Veronica Balderas Iglesias fills us in with more.
02:46With the U.S. general election about 100 days away, Republican presidential nominee
02:52Donald Trump ramped up his attacks against Democratic presidential candidate and vice
02:57president Kamala Harris during a rally in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
03:02New fighter.
03:03We have a new victim now.
03:04Kamala.
03:05We have a new victim.
03:06We have a brand new victim.
03:12And honestly, she's a radical left lunatic.
03:16Harris fired back at Trump when campaigning in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and you may
03:21have noticed Donald Trump has been resorting to some wild lies about my record and some
03:28of what he and his running mate are saying, well, it's just plain weird.
03:32The Harris campaign says the former prosecutor has raised $200 million since President Joe
03:38Biden's endorsement and that 66% came from first time donors.
03:44New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, a Republican, expects the excitement around Harris' candidacy
03:50to wear off within 30 days.
03:53He advises the Trump-J.D. Vance ticket to stick to the policies instead of resorting to personal
03:59attacks.
04:00Stick to what's driving anxiety.
04:02People have anxiety right now because they can't pay their bills.
04:05They have anxiety because they don't feel safe in their homes or in their communities.
04:09Those are the things that will drive them to go make a vote for Trump in November.
04:14Maryland's Democratic Governor Wes Moore says he believes Harris' vision for the future
04:19will help her win over undecided voters in key swing states.
04:24I think what people are saying now is we can finally have a conversation about the choice
04:29that people have in this election, that people see that it's not just that democracy is on
04:35the line, it's also the fact that basic values of how we think about economic freedoms are
04:41on the line.
04:42Governor Harris is expected to announce her vice presidential pick before the Democratic
04:47National Convention scheduled for August in Chicago.
04:51Political science professor June Spigman, who also is a Rhode Island state legislator,
04:57says candidates usually choose running mates that can balance the ticket.
05:01Geographically is often the way it's done.
05:04She's from the West Coast, so let's choose someone from the Midwest who can bring votes
05:09that she might not otherwise get.
05:12Trump balanced the ticket with someone who was much younger than he was.
05:16Harris has a busy week ahead with a scheduled campaign stop in Atlanta, Georgia.
05:21The Trump ticket will also hold campaign events in Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona in the
05:28coming days, according to their website.
