DOST's advanced manufacturing center aims to boost the PH metal industry
Transcript
00:00Today's launching of a research and development center in the metals industry will tremendously
00:05boost the country's manufacturing sector with enhanced methods for application and a highly
00:10capable and competent workforce endowed with updated technological skills. A brainchild of
00:16a collaboration between the DOST, the United States Agency for Industrial Development, USAID,
00:23and the local United Laboratories, Inc. or Unilab. This venture has nothing but upsides
00:29for the formation of an upskilled local workforce and the establishment of a one-stop solution hub
00:35for additive concerns in manufacturing as our Rod Lagusad reports.
00:41A significant support for the country's manufacturing sector. It also includes the
00:46upskilling and reskilling of the workforce. This is in with the inauguration of the Advanced
00:51Manufacturing Center or AMCEN of the Metals Industry Research and Development of the
00:56Department of Science and Technology in Taguig City as an advanced manufacturing institute under
01:00the Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Development Alliance Program which is led by the United
01:05States Agency for International Development or USAID and the Unilab Foundation with a goal of
01:11enhancing manufacturing capabilities. According to Secretary Renato Salidum Jr., this will help
01:16Filipinos to feel the benefits this industry brings. We will make sure that our labor force
01:21is industry-ready by developing and implementing technology-based training courses,
01:28even the scholarships provided by the U.S. As a technology hub for additive manufacturing,
01:33AMCEN services and activities, particularly this partnership with the Unilab Foundation,
01:39are intended to help sustain the global competitiveness of the country. In 2022,
01:44the Philippines ranked 59 in the Global Innovation Index and last year it improved to 56.
01:50According to USAID, AMCEN aims to be a leading hub for additive manufacturing and prototyping,
01:55which aligned with its mission to develop a highly skilled workforce.
02:00In just two years, we established three advanced manufacturing institutes in the north, south,
02:07and the capital of the Philippines with another one launched in Visayas next month. This approach,
02:14done through collaboration with the government, industry, and academia,
02:19brings us significantly closer to achieving our shared goal. And this, to have a highly
02:24skilled and adaptable workforce. What the AMCEN will deliver us will be a new AMI that is to
02:33enhance the advanced manufacturing skills of the workforce. No doubt, enhanced skills will boost
02:40the competitiveness of various industries that drive our economy and ultimately improve the
02:47Filipino's quantity of life. It will also focus on materials research and development, prototyping,
02:53fabrication, and fostering collaborations and partnerships. AMCEN is expected to become a
02:58one-stop solution center for additive manufacturing concerns in the industry.
