00:00The target of the Department of Tourism is to make the hotel industry better in the country.
00:04This has a big impact on the tourism sector.
00:07The DOT laid out how it can be improved.
00:10Rod Lagusan with the report. Rise and shine, Rod.
00:16The hotel industry is a big part of the tourism sector.
00:19That's why the Department of Tourism was established here.
00:22The DOT launched the Philippine Hotel Owners Association, Inc.,
00:27and the Philippine Hotel Industry Strategic Action Plan 2023-2028.
00:32According to Tourism Secretary Cristina Frasco,
00:34456,000 demand for accommodation rooms is expected in 2028.
00:40In addition, there is a need for simultaneous demand for this
00:43where investments will be of great help.
00:47Under the current CREATE law,
00:49there are incentives for those who already own
00:53tourism-related infrastructure investments.
00:55The DOT's attached agency,
00:58the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, or TIEZA, was appointed here.
01:02TIEZA is able to offer investment incentives that include
01:06a lower corporate income tax,
01:08exemptions on importation duties that are related to the tourism investment,
01:13as well as certain amnesty.
01:16The Department of Tourism is also involved in the development of a road
01:19towards tourist destinations.
01:21That is why the government continues to push for a fund for tourism infrastructure,
01:26especially since it is not included in the budget of the DPWH.
01:29I believe that we are making headway
01:33and I'm optimistic that with the help of both Houses of Congress,
01:42as well as our President's continued articulation
01:49that tourism is a priority.
01:51I think that all of us are aligned in a sense that we recognize
01:58that investing in tourism is investing in the Filipino people.
02:02According to the Accommodation Capacity Survey of the DOT,
02:05currently, there are more than 335,000 rooms in the country.
02:10The plan is for the industry to have a roadmap in the years to come.
02:18In other words, this roadmap obviously should not end in 2028.
02:23We have to always remember that we're not competing among ourselves.
02:30We have to look at what the competitors are offering
02:33and this is where benchmarking comes in.
02:37At the last sectoral meeting with the President,
02:39the DOT brought forward the request of POA
02:41for the reclassification of tourism-related investment.
02:44We presented this to the President and he received it quite positively.
02:49So we're hopeful that with the improvement in the tiering,
02:54that there will be a longer time for the income tax holiday
02:58for tourism-related investment.
03:01According to the DOT,
03:031.45 million people are working in the accommodation industry.
03:07Rod Laguzad, for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
