00:00Hi guys, my name's Jack Marshall, I'm a journalist with the Lancashire Pulse newspaper and welcome
00:08back to our latest video in the LPE's review series.
00:12Now so far we've covered plenty of places across Preston, we've covered everything from
00:16absolute local classics like our hubs No Promises, which we did last week, to places which are
00:24a bit more kind of like classic takeaway burger joints, believe we went to Summer Club Burger,
00:28hope for that, that was good, we've been to kind of your fancy and newer place which
00:31just opened up in the town centre like Boo, which is kind of, or Ohanas, which are kind
00:36of like sit-down burger restaurants rather than just, you know, your classic burger joints.
00:41So we've tried a bit of a wide spectrum so far, but what we're missing is, I mean, the
00:47go-to, not the go-to, but the kind of pre-eminent burger joint, the ubiquitous burger joint of
00:54the planet Earth, which is obviously McDonald's.
00:56Now people will be howling comparing the stuff that our hubs No Promises produces to the
01:02stuff that McDonald's produces, but it's a burger joint and it's in Preston, so it's
01:06going to be on our list of places to try.
01:07So I'm heading down to McDonald's, let's see how I get on and then, yeah, we'll see how
01:12it compares.
01:13I've got, I mean, I've not got massive hopes because we all know what Mac is like, we've
01:16all had Mac before, probably not going to blow my socks off, but let's compare it on
01:21the criteria we've got so far for our other places and see how it stacks up.
01:24Cheers.
01:35Right guys, so, picked up a Maccy's, went for a classic Big Mac, tried it, and yeah,
01:41I mean, there's not much else to say than it's a pretty underwhelming burger.
01:46I mean, when you're absolutely gagging for a bit of salt and protein and just kind of
01:53like roughage, when you're a bit hungover, it'll do the job, but when you're comparing
01:58it, when you actually like delve into what it is as food and compare it to other burgers,
02:03like the kind of places you can go to in Preston, there's some seriously good places in the
02:07city these days.
02:08So when you're actually breaking it down, you look at the criteria, now it's scoring
02:10across the board.
02:11Pretty underwhelming.
02:12Pretty underwhelming.
02:13Anyway, we'll go through each point, starting out with the meat.
02:16The meat in Maccy's, I mean, pretty thin, kind of tastes of beef, but I'm emphasising
02:25the fact that it tastes of beef.
02:28It's not like beefy.
02:29I don't know how to explain it.
02:30It's got that classic Maccy's beef burger taste, which is kind of like, is that beef
02:34flavouring?
02:35I don't know.
02:36It's an opinion.
02:37It's one of those things, so you're not quite sure where you land on that.
02:41It's not got classic mince-y beef burger bite-y, it's juicy, it's got the pepper, salt,
02:46that kind of stuff.
02:48The meats are, I feel like I'm being generous, the meats are two out of five, they're just,
02:53that's it.
02:54It's a little paperweight of a patty and you get a couple of them on a big Mac and that's
02:58it.
02:59There's not much else to say.
03:00We've all had a Maccy's beef burger, so you know what I'm talking about.
03:05So yeah, on to the moisture of the burger, this is a one out of five.
03:09It's almost like it was so, the parts weren't, it wasn't like a whole burger, it's like all
03:14the constituent parts just kind of fall apart.
03:16There's a bit of melted cheese in there, there's a bit of burger sauce, the burger sauce is
03:18okay.
03:19That, I'm giving a Mac, because Maccy's burger sauce is alright, aside from that, it just
03:25kind of falls apart.
03:26It's not got moisture, because it's not like a whole thing, it's like each constituent
03:29part is its own thing and they don't kind of form a whole, which is a burger and moist
03:33and delectable and tasty.
03:36I'm just liking that kind of thing, but again, we're going back to it, it's Maccy's, what
03:39do you expect?
03:40Extras.
03:41Now I'm actually going to give them a three for the extras, because, now I know this is
03:46kind of bad, but I quite like Maccy's lettuce and I don't know if it's because they put
03:51sugar in it or something, Christ knows, but I quite actually like it, I think it's got
03:54quite a nice taste to it and I like the burger sauce as well.
03:57I don't mind, you know, if you're having a dirty burger with a bit of classic melted
04:01American cheese, I don't mind that, that's all fine, but yeah, I'm giving it a three
04:05because I do feel I'm being a bit generous, but yeah, I didn't hate the extras, they
04:11also have pickles and I do rate that for Maccy's, people who take the pickles off, have a long
04:14hard look in the mirror, that's genuinely one of the best parts of the burger, because
04:17it's just a cut through flavour and that makes a big difference when you're having a pretty
04:21average burger, so yeah, I'm giving them a three, being generous, whatever.
04:25Vibe in the restaurant.
04:26It's just not really a vibe, is it?
04:27It's a Maccy's vibe, it's a zero, it's just a place to go in and just be given food and
04:33get out as quickly as you can, yeah, it's always busy, it's always a bit hectic, it's
04:37always a bit shouty, it's always a bit Maccy's, it's just what it is, I'm not being, I'm not,
04:41like I'm digging them out, this is just what they are, they're a highly successful business
04:44because they get people in and get people out, but in terms of like a restaurant vibe,
04:48if you compare that to some places I've been to, All Hopes No Promises, Boo, Ohana's, just
04:54places where it's like welcoming, it's like chic and nice, that's not what Maccy's is,
04:58so that's not what they're looking to do, so the low score, they're not bothered about
05:03that, they don't prioritise that, so yeah, it's a zero for the vibe, but whatever, just
05:07have the plight, that's fine.
05:09Value.
05:10Now, this burger, just the big Mac on its own is ÂŁ4.49, which is a little expensive
05:16really for what it is.
05:17It's not that big a burger, it's not that filling a meal, it's pretty, well, exceptionally
05:21cheap to produce for them, I'm giving them a two out of five for value because I don't
05:26think there's that much value there, like, this burger doesn't blow anyone away and you're
05:33not getting much change from a fiver, I just think like a Boots meal deal is cheaper, and
05:38you just get more food, and I think it's better, and you get a drink.
05:44I don't know, I'm not convinced by that, I feel like a big Mac should be about three quid
05:49less, ÂŁ2.50, it's just not, yeah, I didn't think it was value for money particularly
05:55at all.
05:56In my mind, Macca's is like one of those cheap fast food places, but as is the case with
06:00a lot of places at the minute, I do feel like price is just creeping up, and I don't know,
06:05I don't think that's very good value at all.
06:07I'm not saying I was surprised because I know the price of a Macca's, obviously, like, it's
06:10one of those things we should just get every now and again, but yeah, I don't think the
06:13value was there at all.
06:14So overall, we do get, I mean, it's the lowest score we've given in any LPE so far, it's
06:18an eight out of 25.
06:20I do feel I'm being a bit generous with the extra score of three out of five.
06:24So yeah, that's our review for Macca's.
06:26Everyone's had a Macca's, let me know what you think, let me know if your big Mac's your
06:29favourite burger in Preston, if you're one of those people, if you absolutely love it,
06:32if you think it's trash and you'll never eat there ever again.
06:34If you have to have a Macca's, if it's just like a craving marketing thing where you see
06:37the Golden Arches and that's it, you've got to have one, that's fair enough as well.
06:40Let us know your opinions in the comments below, let me know what you think.
06:43But yeah, thanks for watching.
