00:00Nightly greetings, one and all.
00:05William Theo here, homegrown, and happy to be bringing you PTV News Now.
00:10Atop tonight's News Leaderboard, we kick off with the President going into huddle with
00:14disaster response agencies of the government to remind them of ensuring timely weather
00:19alerts and advisories for incoming storms and hurricanes.
00:23His order to surrogates was unmistakably clear.
00:27New warnings and advisories early to help the public prepare.
00:31And the President does not want the country and his government to be caught flat-footed
00:36when La Niña finally hits sooner than later.
00:39Tropical cyclone Gemi, aka Typhoon Karina's passage across the northern tip of Luzon,
00:45drew and turbocharged the southwest monsoon, which dumped sustained torrential rains that
00:50left much of the NCR underwater.
00:53Roadways turning into rivers, waste-to-neck deep floodwaters, automobiles bogged down
00:58amid rising floodwaters, and residents across the megacity retreating to their houses'
01:03rooftops to stay dry and safe, and tens of thousands of motorists and commuters who lost
01:09their rides and have no means to commute due to heavily flooded streets and roadways.
01:14As a result, the megacity, or the National Capital Region, was placed under and declared
01:19a state of calamity of the scope and severity of the floodwaters.
01:25Meanwhile it is said that at least 8 million Venezuelans took their chances to leave Venezuela
01:30when strongman Nicolas Maduro won the presidency and took over the reins of government.
01:36Results of the latest polls over the weekend have poured in and show Maduro allegedly won
01:41the elections, which many groups question and international leaders have cast doubt
02:46Maduro received 70% of the votes in this election and Nicolas Maduro received 30% of
02:51the votes.
02:52Machado says her results are based on tallies the opposition campaign received from representatives
02:58stationed at about 40% of ballot boxes.
03:02The claims of election irregularity have drawn attention from the international community,
03:08including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who expressed his concerns about the validity
03:15of the results Monday during his visit to Tokyo.
03:20It's critical that every vote be counted fairly and transparently, that election officials
03:26immediately share information with the opposition and independent observers without delay, and
03:32that the electoral authorities publish the detailed tabulation of votes.
03:36In a letter, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic
03:43and Uruguay shared their profound concern about the vote and requested an urgent meeting
03:49before the Organization of American States.
03:53But one analyst says internal, not external pressures may be needed to affect change.
04:00I think change, if it happens, is going to have to come within Venezuela rather than
04:05from abroad.
04:06And, you know, I don't think this is over just yet.
04:10Maduro doesn't rule alone.
04:12Both he and key figures in his inner circle know that he's not going to be able to govern
04:16a country in flames.
04:18On Monday, Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab accused Machado and other opposition
04:26members of attempting to hack of the country's electoral system.
04:31No evidence has been provided.
04:33I think we're going to see greater and greater repression in the next few days in Venezuela.
04:39So far, we've already seen attacks against Maria Corina's campaign and threats against
04:45her person in recent months.
04:47And I think the government's likely to escalate that.
04:50On Monday, Panama's President, Jose Raul Molino, announced a break with Venezuela.
04:57The Panamanian government announced the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel from Venezuela and
05:06the suspension of diplomatic relations until a complete review of the minutes and the computer
05:12system of the vote count is carried out.
05:15Bolivia, Honduras, China, Cuba, Iran and Russia have recognized Maduro's victory.
05:26But Ramsey notes that other nations in the region are less complacent towards the president.
05:33We're seeing governments in Latin America start to recognize that this is not a left
05:37right issue.
05:38This is about democracy or dictatorship.
05:41Ramsey says the protests in Venezuela now are just a drop in the bucket compared to
05:47what's to come.
05:48Celia Mendoza, VOA News, State Department.
05:55At this point, let's turn to PTV's Baguio City TV station for what's cooking in the
06:00Cordilleras right now.
06:02Audrey.
06:03In the Philippines, the government is working to help the former rebels in the Cordilleras
06:11who are part of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, or ECLIPSEPOD
06:162022-2023.
06:17The 6.4 million pesos that the rebels received from the government, including 15,000 pesos
06:29in immediate assistance, 50,000 pesos in livelihood assistance, 21,000 pesos in reintegration
06:35assistance, firearms remuneration, and double the amount of turnover in arms.
06:41According to the DILG, the ECLIPSEPOD is being monitored by the LGU by the former rebels
06:47who are part of the group.
06:49The local government is working to incentivize the rebels to give their information to the
06:59provincial government.
07:00At the same time, the operation of the Cordillera Police is still ongoing, where 16 million
07:07pesos of illegal drugs were confiscated at the expense of four drug personalities.
07:13According to the Procar, eight operations were initiated by the police, including the
07:21marijuana eradication operation, which was carried out under a search warrant.
07:26As a result, 16.4 million pesos of illegal drugs were confiscated, including one street-level
07:34drug personality.
07:35In Benguet, the Benguet Police Provincial Office received 200,000 marijuana plants.
07:43In Madbagu City, two drug personalities were arrested and 20,000 pesos were confiscated.
07:53According to the Procar, the police are working to prevent illegal drug activities.
