Russia’s FSB releases Evan Gershkovich in prisoner swap

Evan Gershkovich, the American journalist convicted of espionage in a show trial, has been freed in one of the most dramatic US-Russian prisoner swaps since the end of the Cold War.

The Wall Street Journal reporter, 32, and 15 other western citizens and dual citizens held in Russia and a series of Russian political prisoners have been exchanged for eight people who are returning to Russia, including Vadim Krasikov, 58, an FSB hitman who was convicted of assassinating a Kremlin enemy in Berlin, and several Russians held in prison in the US.

The swap, which involved 24 people, took place after months of behind-the-scenes negotiation between Moscow and Washington.
