00:00Agreements between political parties and their election candidates must be treated with extreme
00:07caution by the courts.
00:09Former Law Minister Zayed Ibrahim criticised such agreements, referring to the High Court's
00:14order issued to former PKL Vice President Zureyda Kamaruddin last year, which required
00:19her to pay RM10 million in damages for breaching a party bond she signed more than six years
00:24ago.
00:25He said the decision has emboldened parties like UMNO, which has demanded RM100 million
00:30from its former Ramdya Assemblyman Jailani Khamis after his move to pass.
00:35Zayed said he would not be surprised if political parties stipulate higher figures in their
00:39agreements with candidates in the next general election in 2027.
00:44The former MP added that the anti-hopping law already serves as a deterrent and given
00:48that candidates work hard for their parties, it should be sufficient that their seats be
00:52forfeited if they switch parties.
