NIA begins sale of P29/kg rice in Q.C.
Transcript
00:00By far, it was the biggest sale to hit Quezon City this year, and both young and old, to
00:05include the weak and wanting, were not disappointed by the huge savings in their pockets after
00:11their buys.
00:12Our Claisel Pardilla narrates a 29 peso rice sale in 10 kilo bags or sacks that kicked
00:19off today, which consumers hailed and sought for more.
00:25The National Litigation Administration has begun selling rice today at 29 pesos per kilogram
00:31in Quezon City.
00:33This is under the agency's contract growing program.
00:36Florida, who arrived at the NIA office soaked from the downpour, was among the many beneficiaries
00:43of this initiative.
00:44I bought rice because I wanted to buy cheap rice.
00:45I couldn't afford to buy expensive rice because the price of rice is getting lower.
00:54NIA sold over 50,000 kilos of rice to elderly, persons with disabilities, solo parents and
01:02beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program residing in Barangays Piñahan, Central
01:09and Pag-asa in Quezon City.
01:11The rice sold in 10 kilo sacks is priced at 290 pesos per sack.
01:17This pricing provides substantial savings for consumers considering that well-milled
01:23rice typically costs between 47 to 55 pesos per kilogram in local markets.
01:30As a result, buyers are enjoying savings ranging from 180 to 280 pesos per sack.
01:38What I buy in the market is 56 pesos per kilo.
01:42Now, I bought 29 pesos.
01:44A lot of people bought it.
01:46It helped me a lot because I have two students.
01:50This program is not only to provide cheap rice but also to help our farmers.
02:00The NIA is offering new harvest rights from the irrigators associations which are provided
02:06with free seeds, fertilizers and financial assistance through contract farming.
02:12This is an agreement between the irrigators associations.
02:16We will pay around 30,000 pesos and 20,000 pesos in cash.
02:24Our farmers will return 5 tons of rice to the NIA.
02:29The NIA is buying 20 pesos per kilogram of rice.
02:33Our main effort is to raise the level to zero.
02:40We can earn because we don't have to pay any more.
02:44There are only 40,000 farmers participating in the contract growing program.
02:49Some farmers' groups doubt whether the rice supply could sustain for the long haul.
02:54It is clear that if rice is subsidized, the price of rice will be low.
03:01The national government should do something to ensure that the budget is put in place.
03:08Unlike now, 20,000 pesos is limited.
03:17In reality, we can't subsidize everything.
03:20But the government is giving a lot to our farmers.
03:28The budget of the National Rice Program is different.
03:33Our president wants it to be sustainable.
03:36The government wants to capacitate the farmers.
04:06Khaley Zalpardilla, for the new and better Philippines.
