Drake Maye played just one series in the first preseason game. How is that helping the young QB develop?

00:00Yeah, I'm with you. I hated it. I wanted him. I sat here in in our studio yesterday
00:04Saying I want him to get four series
00:06I mean got one and even the one series
00:08There's what one first down then they had the screen pass than the swing pass
00:13So we really didn't get much only one real
00:16Downfield throw and that was the throw to Rager on the curl route which even that was what a 10 12 yard throw
00:21So we didn't really see a lot of him and you and I talked extensively yesterday
00:25Could we see those glimpses where hey, they're on to something here with this guy?
00:28And I think we did see some good things like in the limited time. He was in there. We saw good things
00:33I thought it was good decision-making pretty good accuracy overall that throw to Rager could have been a little bit better
00:38but I
00:39Wanted to see him for a second series and the third series and if he had come in for a fourth series
00:43Maybe to begin the second half instead. We got a lot of zappy
00:48I think was seven series worth of Bailey's happy then a lot of Joe Milton in the second half
00:52And I also thought Jacoby Brissett
00:54I would have liked a second series out of him just first year in this with van Pelt for a full year
00:59I know they've worked together before but first year as the starter with van Pelt as the coordinator kind of full-time working together
01:05First year back in New England as the starter new group of guys around him
01:09I would have liked to have seen two from Jacoby. I would have liked to seen four from May
01:12I think it's a clue how they feel about the joint practices coming up as well as you mean the joint practice. That's true
01:19There's only one
01:20Like when I look at okay may played one series my mind just kept why is the only playing one series why and there's really
01:26Only one theory may go I can come up with why he didn't play and it's got two parts part number one
01:33They have no trust in the second unit offensive line
01:36Absolutely, and Gerard Mayo even alluded to this in his post game press conference
01:39He said that guy needs to protect it and then of course he caught himself and he's like, well, you know
01:43We got to protect the other guys too, but that guy needs to be protected
01:45So they have no choice and if you noticed when they went with their second unit offensive line
01:50They kept the Darien low at left tackle so they don't even have confidence
01:53They have a second left tackle let alone a full second offensive line
01:57So I think that was the biggest reason and I think the other reason and I think some people believe this and some won't
02:03It tells me they're satisfied with where he is in his development whether we like it or not because I think if they were really
02:09Unsatisfied they would have kept that first unit all line in for another series and they would have kept him out there for another series
02:15So I think the biggest part was the old line, but the next biggest part of this they like where he's at right now
02:21How do you get that from what you saw last night because so first of all, I thought
02:27When I say they like it, I think they've seen him every day in practice make like what they've seen for me
02:31I mean for what I've seen in practice. I've seen some progress there and last night. I mean look there wasn't a lot there
02:38I thought what the what are the two most important things for a quarterback?
02:42Accuracy decision-making. I thought he made good decisions across the board
02:46I would disagree with those two by the way, but I will let please continue so accuracy and decision-maker
02:51I thought it
02:52Decision-making was good across the board like the decision to throw to Rager was the right decision that swing pass on the third down was
02:58the right decision
02:59Accuracy, the Rager pass was a little too high but in the rain
03:02I mean maybe Rager could have gone up and got that still would have liked a better throw his accuracy on the other albeit
03:08Short throws I thought was fine
03:09So at least you saw that he operated the offense like he knew what he was doing because we've talked a lot about hey
03:15Can this guy take an under center snap? Does he know how to get in and out of the huddle?
03:18He never did this at UNC. He did do all those things. I'll be it in limited action, but he at least did those things
03:24So that's where I look at it
03:26I say well, they only wanted to play him one series that first unit offensive line only played the two series
03:31So they must feel okay with where he's at. Yeah, I
03:37Personally don't really
03:39Get that point the first point I agree with very much. They clearly and this is no surprise
03:45They clearly have an issue with the depth at offensive line
03:48They've had an issue with who's going to be the starters on the offensive line for a couple seasons now a couple training camps
03:55At least so I'm not surprised by that
03:58I was surprised that they were limiting the play of the top players on the offensive line as
04:04They're slated today so much that they couldn't give Jacoby percent and Drake
04:10May a little bit more playing time that you didn't get and that much of the full
04:16experience of the actual New England Patriots as we expect them to be a month from now now part of that might have been because
04:22the
04:23Carolina Panthers were sitting over 30 players and it might be that they looked at the other side and they said what do we really?
04:30Have to gain here
04:32but I really think they had so much to gain by playing Drake May and I kind of disagree with
04:38Where you're saying that they're satisfied with his development?
04:41I actually think the biggest indicator of all of this is how incredibly precious
04:47They're acting with Drake May and how what a slow roll. They're putting him on
04:52I mean to me it screams Packers way
04:55It screams Jordan loves sitting for years
04:58And I'm not saying that that's what they're gonna do with Drake made this year
05:02but one thing I can
05:03Definitively say is there is a very very slim chance that he's gonna be playing in week one of of this season
05:10and I do think
05:12something that matters is
05:15The the way that it looks to fans last night
05:18So already you get out there because it's the preseason game because you have expectations of a bad team the weather sucks
05:26It I've never seen that place that empty like the it's just from the broadcast
05:31I wasn't there but from the broadcast the stands were just bare minimum of fans there
05:37It was right full it again. It's it's an exhibition and it's crappy and it's Thursday night
05:42There's plenty of reasons for it
05:44But there are people in the in this town who are who are saying that there are reports
05:50Indicating that Drake May is an effing camp
05:53That's what people in this town are saying and I don't think that that's accurate from the reports that I'm reading
05:59But when you only put him out there for one series
06:03Behind the starting line and it looks fine. Like you said like he looked fine. He looked comfortable enough
06:10He was basically walking and chewing gum at the same time, but he looked fine
06:14You're kind of adding fuel to that fire like whether you think that matters or not
06:20I'm not sure
06:21It's the best look for them and on top of that the way more
06:25Important thing is you only have one joint practice coming up with the Eagles next week
06:29And then you have two more preseason games and it just indicates to me. They're really not
06:35prioritizing the idea of getting Drake May
06:38Into a starting position early in the season like at this point
06:42I'm shocked if you see him in September and so I don't know how you feel about that to me
06:47It's just a little bit disappointing because I don't want to see him after work week 13
06:52I'd like to see him a little bit earlier than that
06:55I'd like to think that he's on some kind of schedule where they are challenging him and they're continuing to
07:01stack challenges and he's meeting them and going to the next level and what I saw last night is just
07:07They're being precious with them. They're trying to protect him and I'm simultaneously worried that that's sending the wrong message out there that like
07:15Wow, what a disaster and I don't think he is
