Prophet Jacob guides the Israelites to pray to the One and Only God. God annunciates to him about the next prophet, who will be from his own generation. One night, his son, Joseph, dreams about the sun, the moon and eleven stars which kneel in front of him. He tells Jacob, who advises him not to tell his brothers about the dream. Prophet Joseph is dear to Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. For centuries, the story of his life has been told over and over in many different ways and in many different languages. This is the Iranian version of a very beloved story.

00:00Hello, Father.
00:09Hello, Father.
00:10Hello, sons.
00:16You're worshiping God in private?
00:19Father, will you pray for us, too?
00:23I am always praying for you, my sons.
00:28What are you doing here?
00:30You know that I do not do anything else today.
00:34We want to ask permission to take Joseph to the plains.
00:39Why is that?
00:42Why do you want to take Joseph to the plains?
00:47There is no particular reason.
00:49We just wanted to take Joseph to the plains
00:52so that he could play
00:54and we can teach him the ways of shepherding.
00:58Now is Joseph's childhood and playing time.
01:01When he grows up more, then he can go to the plains with you.
01:08We promise to take good care of him.
01:10Yes, Father, we promise.
01:12It's too soon.
01:14Later, later.
01:40I should have known you were incapable of doing such a simple task.
01:45If you were so capable, why didn't you do it?
01:52We are the sons of a prophet.
02:08I knew killing Joseph was the only option,
02:11and Levi's suggestion was useless.
02:14Father will never be separated from Joseph.
02:18You obviously can't kill Joseph in front of Father, can you?
02:23First, we must separate Joseph from Father,
02:27and then think of a plan.
02:35I think I have an idea.
02:42There is only one person who can convince Father to let Joseph come with us,
02:47and that person is Joseph himself.
02:52We will tempt Joseph by talking of the joys of playing on the plains,
02:58and if he wants to come with us brothers,
03:01then Father will surely not object.
03:06Yes, that's good.
03:09We'll try.
03:31Do you really want to stay home all the time and play with Benjamin and Dina?
03:41Well, yes, I love playing with Benjamin and Dina.
03:45Of course, I love playing with Benjamin and Dina as well.
03:49But it's much more fun playing in the mountains and the plains.
03:55Why don't you move the herd?
03:59We're waiting for our brothers.
04:07Aren't you going to the pasture today?
04:10We were just about to leave, but we want permission to take Joseph along as well.
04:17Why don't you let Joseph come and play with us?
04:20He can help us and play a little bit as well.
04:24The plains are so beautiful and full of plants.
04:28Have you ever eaten raspberries?
04:31No. How does it taste?
04:33Beautiful! They're so tasty. I love them.
04:36Have you ever seen sprouting springs and flowing streams?
04:40As Joseph lacks a mother, I have promised to take care of him upon his mother's request.
04:49Besides, parents must look after their little children more than their grown ones.
04:56People taunt us with asking,
04:58does your father not trust you to take Joseph with you to the plains?
05:04Why don't you let them take him today, just to stop the people talking?
05:09Because he's a child and I'm used to having him here.
05:13Although going to the plains and working would be constructive,
05:17it's still too soon for him to run after the herd.
05:21Father, we were younger than Joseph when we went to the plains.
05:25You didn't go alone.
05:27I'll take Joseph to the plains gradually and teach him.
05:31I agree he must learn, but it's too soon for him yet.
05:36We can teach him how to work with the sheep.
05:40And because we're his brothers, we would be kind.
05:44I would like nothing more than for Joseph to grow up and gain experience.
05:48But he's only a child and he is attached to me and being in this house.
05:54As soon as you left, he'd be asking to return because he missed me.
05:59We would keep him playing and busy so that he wouldn't even miss the house.
06:03He would have so much fun playing in the stream.
06:07All brothers should play together and wrestle and swim and have fun together.
06:12And we would eat, we would have hot milk and roasted meat.
06:20I don't think father trusts us.
06:23It's not you I don't trust.
06:26It's the wolves on the plains.
06:29I fear you may become distracted by the herd and perhaps not even notice the wolves.
06:35I saw wolves chasing a child in my dream.
06:38That's a lame excuse, father.
06:40You watched us kill that other wolf.
06:43We're ten strong young men capable of killing a wolf.
06:47Do you think us so weak we can't protect our brother?
06:50Even against a single wolf?
06:56Please, father, will you send me to the plains with my brothers?
07:04You are still too young, my son.
07:06Play with children your own age.
07:10But I am growing up and I would like to play with my elder brothers.
07:15Please allow me to go with them.
07:17Look, father, Joseph wants to come with us.
07:21Yes, father, please let Joseph come with us.
07:25Please, father, allow me to go to the plains with my brothers.
07:31Father, please.
07:46Very well, then.
07:53Thank you, father.
07:55We appreciate it.
07:59All right, Joseph, we better leave.
08:02Let's go.
08:04Wait.
08:08I must get Joseph ready.
08:11I must get Joseph ready.
08:15No problem.
08:16Come on, my son.
08:24Look after Joseph.
08:26He is not used to the hardships you are.
08:28Don't worry, mother, we won't let him suffer any hardships.
08:41Don't go far from your brothers and look after yourself, my son.
08:48Put on this cape.
08:53It's too big for me.
08:56Put it on and you'll find it fits.
09:00This cape will fit whoever deserves to wear it.
09:05Let's try it on.
09:18Father, it fits me.
09:23This cape came from paradise, from my grandfather.
09:27And prophet Abraham gave it to my father, Isaac.
09:33Isaac gave it to me, and now I give it to you.
09:39Take good care of this cape and don't be separated from it.
09:46It will keep you safe everywhere you go.
09:50I can't show it to anybody.
09:52May God keep you safe against all heavenly and earthly dangers.
10:06Stay with your brothers everywhere and don't be separated from this cape.
10:13Stay with your brothers everywhere and do as they tell you.
10:18Let's go, son.
10:23Here comes Joseph.
10:25Let's go.
10:27Let's go.
10:31I'll see you to the edge of town.
10:33No problem.
10:35Let's go.
10:37Don't worry.
10:39Let's go.
10:41Don't worry, father. We'll have a good day with Joseph.
11:09Let's go.
11:40Your brothers will look after you.
11:44Tell them if you need anything.
11:46They'll help you.
11:48Take care, my son.
11:50I've put in food and water for Joseph.
11:53Don't let him go hungry.
11:55Don't worry.
11:56Levi.
12:00Joseph is in your care.
12:02Let nothing bad happen to him.
12:06I'll do my best.
12:08But if you're so worried, you shouldn't let him come.
12:14I understand.
12:16Take him.
12:19But do look after him.
12:21On behalf of my brothers and myself,
12:24I assure you we'll return Joseph happy and laughing to you at sunset.
12:30Let's go, Joseph.
12:32Let's go.
12:35Joseph.
12:39Move the herd.
12:42Let's go, Joseph.
13:06Don't worry.
13:08His brothers will look after Joseph.
13:35Let's go.
14:05Let's go.
14:35Let's go.
15:05What are you doing, Judah?
15:07You hurt my knee.
15:10What kind of game is this?
