There was ‘huge enthusiasm’ for the start of the Ekka today with 40-thousand people streaming through the gates. 10,000 animals and 21,000 thousand competition entries from giant vegetables to perfectly iced cakes; all gathered for the 145th annual Royal Queensland Show.

00:00Thousands pouring through the gates for Queensland's biggest show of the year.
00:07Everything from dagwood dogs to daggy dogs on full display.
00:12But, as usual, the animal nursery proved a show favourite.
00:17You see a lot of people are a bit nervous at the start when they first come in, particularly little kids.
00:21Then they realise how friendly these guys are and they go, oh wow, that's just unreal.
00:25And they're just loving it. And they spend ages in here.
00:28Some people spend hours, some people spend ten minutes. It's what you want to do.
00:31For 12-year-old Archie Head, this year's ecker is a family affair.
00:36As a fifth-generational woodchopper, he's competing alongside his dad.
00:41The bigger you get, the bigger the axe you get and the stronger you are.
00:45It's pretty fun, just going out there, having a crack.
00:49And it's not an ecker without the ecker staple.
00:52But these desserts are desserts with a cause.
00:56It's not just about the ice cream, it's about where the money goes.
00:59So all profits from the Ecker Strawberry Sundae Stores sold through the Common Good Support Research and Programs at the Prince Charles Hospital.
01:06Well, this year's show is all about being ecker.
01:10From discounted tickets and for still seekers like me, cheaper rides!
01:18Gloomy weather couldn't keep showgoers at bay.
01:21My dad is the biggest ecker fanatic.
01:24He comes from the bush and so he comes here every year and we go see all the animals, it's fun.
01:28It's nice, relaxing, as I said, easy to get around and the temperature's good.
01:33And you can never put a dampener on the real priorities.
01:37What are you most excited to do?
01:39Look what I got in my show bag.
