Local businesses in coastal towns say that high temperatures helps their profits, and a 32 degree heat certainly doesn't hurt their profits.

00:00While Northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland are getting thunderstorms,
00:04here in the South East we're being blessed with another flash of heat this month,
00:08with today pinned to be the hottest day of the year so far.
00:11This follows a trend of periods of high heat becoming more frequent in recent years.
00:16We kind of take the period between 1970 and 2000. We had three years in that whole period
00:22where we saw a temperature of 35 degrees being reached somewhere in the UK in a Pacific year.
00:282000 to 2024, we've already seen seven years. So that shows you the kind of increase in frequency
00:35of these hot bursts. And as I said, as we go into the next 50 to 100 years,
00:41that will probably increase further. So these hotspots, what we've got at the moment,
00:46certainly probably will become much more common.
00:48Temperatures are set to reach 32 degrees in Kent, along with a high humidity,
00:53prompting a yellow heat health alert.
00:55The Met Office also recommended keeping curtains closed during the hottest times of the day,
00:59between 11am and 3pm, as well as drinking lots of water.
01:04Well, even though I'm supposed to be the one telling you how to enjoy this nice summer weather,
01:07I think the people of Ramsgate might be a bit more used to it than me,
01:10and maybe a bit more qualified to tell you what you can get up to.
01:14Come to the beach. Yeah. And sun ourselves.
01:17Going to Wetherspoons. Fish and chips.
01:19And fish and chips.
01:20Uh, when it's hot, when the weather's decent, I actually go for a cycle ride.
01:24And now we're going for a little bike ride.
01:27While the beachgoers aren't the only ones enjoying the hot weather,
01:30business owners on the coastline are always hoping for the sun to come out in its fullest,
01:34meaning more people can get out and enjoy the weather,
01:37and hopefully look for something to keep them cool.
01:40It's weather dependent, but the sun comes out, business comes out.
01:45We sell the beach inflatables, buckets, spades, ice cream, slush.
01:50We do hot food as well. Toasties, paninis, a bit of everything.
01:54Here in the UK, it can only be classified as an official heat wave
01:58if it lasts at least three days and hits temperatures above our normal threshold,
02:02which would mean more than 25 degrees anywhere outside of London,
02:06which has a slightly higher threshold.
02:08A yellow heat health alert means those who are particularly vulnerable, such as the elderly,
02:12or those with underlying conditions,
02:14should take extra care when they are in the sun and to not overexert themselves.
02:18So if you're planning to enjoy this weather outside, make sure you stay nice and hydrated,
02:23and if you're selling ice creams, I'd stay open a little later than usual.
