00:26his 98th birth anniversary.
00:32And Russian Palestine assess the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the
00:37humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:50We begin with the news.
00:51On Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro signed a decree to create a National Cyber
00:56Security Council to deal with cyberattacks in the country.
01:00During the Defense and State Council that took place on the same day with members of
01:04the Military High Command and the Executive Cabinet, the head of state said that the measure
01:09seeks to warranty the liberation and protection of all the country's technological command
01:14systems.
01:15He added that all institutions, public and private, must be freed and vaccinated against
01:21cybernetic warfare.
01:22In the same session, Jorge Rodríguez, President of the National Assembly, said that the Parliament
01:28will discuss a package of reforms to regulate the use of social networks in the country,
01:33a measure that is also advancing in other nations of the world.
01:41The Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro stated that his government is a defender of the United
01:46Nations Charter.
01:49We are persevering defenders of the United Nations Charter and we believe in the United
01:53Nations system, but a United Nations system that upholds international law, international
01:59law, the right of the people, the right to peace, the right to independence, not interventionism.
02:07Also the Executive Vice President of Venezuela denounced that the acts of vandalism that
02:11took place in the country after the presidential elections were a consequence of the irresponsible
02:16calls of the opposition María Corina Machado and the former presidential candidate Edmundo
02:21González.
02:27The events that took place as a result of the irresponsible and violent call of the
02:31violent activist María Corina Machado and that of the former candidate Edmundo González
02:36Urrutia resulted in crimes against the constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and
02:41the violation of fundamental rights of Venezuelans, such as the right to life, the right to personal
02:46integrity, the right to property and the right to diversity, which constitutes, as stated
02:51by the Attorney General of the Republic, hate crimes that were also committed on July 29,
02:5731 and 2 of August in joint work with the Prosecutor's General Office.
03:02We have as a balance of lethal victims, fatalities, 22 people whose cases have been duly substantiated.
03:17In addition, the Attorney General of Venezuela pointed out the seriousness of the hate crimes
03:22committed against the people of Venezuela by persecuting and attacking citizens for
03:27their political orientation in favor of chavism.
03:36Not only the crime or instigation to a hate crime, but the hate crime that is the materialization
03:41of the murder occurs when a person attacks another person motivated exclusively by their
03:46membership or a particular social group. Are violent behaviors motivated by the prejudice
03:52towards the person by their sex, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, socioeconomic level,
03:59nationality, ideology or political affiliation, disability, sexual orientation? In the Venezuelan
04:04case, was strictly to persecute and seek to exterminate chavismo.
04:10We are going live to Caracas, Venezuela, at this moment where the National Assembly
04:15is holding an ordinary session.
04:18The electoral results of the Parliament proposed to approve a package of laws that accompany
04:25the actions of the National Executive and the ex-Prosecutor's Office to respect, to
04:32make the results of electoral respected and with the objective to defend the citizens
04:39in the country. It's disgusting and repulsive that when we see and we read the means of
04:44communication and the cables of the agencies, they say the protests resulting from the elections
04:52of the 28th of July, which have left 25 dead. The detail that is missing is that the 25
04:58deaths were actually our dead, that 25 dead were young men and women, militants of the
05:05Socialist Party of Unity of Venezuela, militants of the revolution. But they forget that it
05:11is our responsibility to say what is the truth and defend the truth. That is why I call you
05:21and suggest that we suspend the Parliamentary speeches and that we do not carry out these
05:28speeches until we have accomplished the sanction of these laws in which it is included, the
05:33law that we have already, the Deputy, you have said immediately we have to start the
05:40process to consult so that it is brought to the discussion here in the Parliament for
05:48the National Assembly of the Republic of Venezuela.
06:04Second point in the agenda.
06:10We are live to Venezuela, Caracas, as the National Assembly is holding an ordinary session.
06:15The President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, informed a group of regulations
06:21aimed at confronting the spread of hatred, terrorism and fascist expressions in the country.

06:50Fidel Castro Ruz on his 98th birth anniversary. In Cuba, citizens carried out different activities
06:57to honour Fidel Castro's work and legacy. Early in the morning, people from across the
07:02country gathered at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery to lay a wreath of flowers to the grave where
07:08Fidel's ashes rest. In other parts of the world, citizens also paid tribute to Fidel's
07:13actions in the fight for a more equal and peaceful world. In China, Fidel's contributions
07:18to biotechnology were acknowledged. The Union of Cuban Residents in Argentina highlighted
07:23the example of the historic leader of the revolution and have been carrying out different
07:28activities since Sunday to honour the day. Celebrations alike were also held in other
07:33areas such as Russia, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Vietnam and many others.
07:41Venezuela joined the day of homage dedicated to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro. In an
07:46official statement, the Bolivarian nation celebrates with revolutionary fervor the 98th
07:52anniversary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, remembering his rebelliousness,
07:58thinking inspired by Martí's and Bolívar's ideas. The legacy of Commander Fidel Castro
08:03has transcended the history of our America and the world and today continues to be one
08:08of the main inspirations that allows us to move in the midst of the battles in favour
08:13of humanity with commitment and strength to defeat any difficulty. From Venezuela, we
08:19joined the sentiments of the Cuban people, its President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Army
08:23General Raúl Castro, certain that the socialist revolution undertaken by the immortal Commander-in-Chief
08:29Fidel will continue to be that beacon of dignity for all those who aspire to build a better,
08:36just and non-interfering world.
08:38In this context also, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America People's
08:47Strait Treaty commemorated Fidel Castro's legacy. In this regard, on social media it
08:52posted, the peoples of the ALBA-TCP commemorate the 98th anniversary of the birth of Commander
08:58Fidel Castro, historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, who travelled a long road to achieve
09:04the liberation of Cuba and defend the sovereignty of his country that was under the tyranny
09:09of the US Empire, Fidel beacon and reference for the peoples in their processes of struggle
09:15and liberation from capitalist oppression and the expansionist and predatory pretensions
09:20of imperialism.
09:24In the meantime, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on social media expressed that his nation
09:29awaited his 98th birthday last night in the sea of youth who shouted in chorus Fidel,
09:36Fidel, Fidel with the same passion of their parents and grandparents. This way, Canel
09:41stated that this is the name of the Cuban Revolution for all time, while he wished a
09:46happy birthday to Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro.
09:54The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution was an advocate of Latin American integration
09:58to confront imperialism. As faith to his view, we invite you to listen to a fragment
10:03of a speech by Fidel Castro during his visit to Caracas on January 23rd, 1959.
10:28We have to tighten more and more the ties of people to people. And to that I have come
10:37to Venezuela, to bring a message not of caste or group, but a message of people to people.
10:52In Argentina, the trade union Front of National Universities holds its second day of strike
10:57in demand of salary and labor improvements. President Javier Millet's policies affect
11:0260 national universities where nearly 190,000 professors work and 2 million youngsters study
11:09in a context of political and social crisis. Workers from all university unions and federations
11:15joined the protest to demand an adjustment in education at national level. The strike
11:20of universities responds to the situation that the sector is going through. After seven
11:25months of systematic adjustment and attacks by the Millet administration.
11:33On Monday, Uruguay headed the seventh meeting of the Mercosur-China dialogue mechanism to
11:38strengthen ties between nations. The meeting was held in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo
11:44with the objective of reaching a free trade agreement with China. For his part, Uruguay's
11:49deputy foreign minister Nicolás Albertoni presented investment proposals aimed at relaxing
11:54Mercosur's rules to open the bloc to the world amid its own expectations of trade openness.
12:08In the United States, the team of the democratic candidate Kamala Harris claimed that Elon
12:12Musk is using his ex-social media to control the country's democracy. Harris' campaign
12:18team denounced that billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk ruined X by allowing hate speech
12:24and disinformation to flood the platform. They further claimed that Musk is now using
12:29his fortune and broad scope to try to take over U.S. democracy. The billionaire held
12:34a live interview with former president Donald Trump on X, which was followed by over one
12:39million users.
12:48In Russia, President Vladimir Putin met with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas
13:05to join efforts for a ceasefire and to provide aid to Gaza. On the meeting, both leaders
13:10discussed the situation in the Middle East, and despite its special military operation
13:15in Ukraine, Russia is willing to support Palestine, thus the head of state affirmed that it cannot
13:20be dismissed. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that the United Nations failed
13:25to warranty the human rights of the Palestinians in the face of the situation of Israeli aggressions
13:30after the U.S. pressure. Putin further stressed that they will always advocate a peaceful
13:36solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
13:44First of all, of course, we are concerned about civilian losses. According to the UN,
13:50these are already 40,000 people, mostly women and children.
13:56The United Nations claims Israel continues to block crucial humanitarian aid missions
14:01to Gaza. According to the multilateral organization, Israel has denied access to the Palestinian
14:06enclave to more than one-third of the aid missions since the beginning of August. The
14:11United Nations Security Council calls Tel Aviv's decisions a continuing cycle of deprivation
14:16and distress for the Palestinian population devastated by the genocidal operation. According
14:22to the latest report of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian
14:26Affairs, 198 people were killed and 430 injured in Israeli attacks in less than 72 hours and
14:34adds that the blockade of coordinated aid undermines efforts to address urgent humanitarian
14:40needs.

17:039th, the organisation has been carrying out rescue works. According to figures from the
17:08Italian immigration authorities, 421 migrants had reached the island of Lampedusa in just
17:1424 hours as of Friday. In the midst of this new wave of migration, Open Arms has been
17:20involved in six operations, including the distribution of hydration and life jackets
17:25to migrants who have managed to reach the island in precarious boats. In one of the
17:30rescue missions, they saved the lives of 55 people from Tunisia, including children and
17:36babies in high-risk conditions.
17:38A resident of Mahamatpur went to court to file criminal charges against the former Prime
17:48Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, for the wave of violence on the riots. The Prime
17:53Minister resigned and left the country while violence and tensions rised on the streets.
17:57Therefore, a citizen resorted to justice to denounce the murder of an owner of a grocery
18:03store with whom he has a family relationship. The victim was killed by an armed attack.
18:08Besides, Prime Minister Hasina, the Secretary General of the Awami League Party, the former
18:14Home Minister and the Inspector General of Police are further being accused. This is
18:19the first case opened before the Bangladesh judiciary against the former Prime Minister
18:24who moved to India on August 5th this year.
18:32Never, never fails to deliver.
18:43On Monday evening, five-time Olympic champion Mijain Lopez highlighted athletes committed
18:48to the Cuban people and commemoration of Fidel Castro's birth anniversary.
18:54And with our Inder President's permission, I told him I wasn't willing to read a communiqué,
19:03as I want to say from the bottom of my heart what I feel for my country, for my people
19:07who loves me.
19:14We are already at home, all the athletes who went with a unique mission that of fighting
19:19for our medals to reaffirm we are the best in the world.
19:24And we are happy to get here and represent our people, today, tomorrow and ever.
19:31I won my fifth medal, I am retiring, but I will work on our continuity, so that all our
19:36Cuban athletes continue fighting for victory and continue giving joy to our Cuban people.
19:40So I ask for a round of applause on behalf of the birth anniversary of our undefeated
19:44commander-in-chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
19:53The 18th Ibarra International Film Festival in Cuba concluded with a screening of more
20:03than 80 films, consolidating itself as a fundamental event for artistic creation.
20:11A new edition of this event, which celebrates cinema, ended successfully in the province
20:17of Alguin, where the festival was held since August 6, with the slogan Filma el Oriente.
20:23The days served as a stage where not only cinema was highlighted as the only art, but
20:28also music, theater, literature and visual expressions were combined.
20:37It has been very important to have achieved a factory award, a satisfaction of those who
20:43have participated in this because the quality of the projects has been very important.
20:47The results of this award that the juries are making, the justice of this enormous diversity
20:52of awards, to have consolidated cinema in construction, I think this festival has been
20:57characterized by the level and quantity of theoretical forums on space, technology forums
21:03and debates.
21:04It has been an impressive thing and a very complete festival with all the artistic manifestations.
21:11We are really very satisfied with the results.
21:15The Ibarra International Film Festival featured films from 25 countries, which presented works
21:20classified in different categories, including 11 fiction feature films, 22 documentary shorts
21:26and 15 animated pieces.
21:28In addition to the invited nations, the festival was attended by Argentina, Venezuela, Austria,
21:33the United States, Iran, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, among others.
21:41There were works of various types, fiction, documentary, short and long films.
21:46We were very pleased with the diversity of countries that were competing, of course Cuba,
21:51some co-productions with Spain and Italy, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil.
21:56There was a diversity that is always important because this diversity implies an interest
22:01in the festival in those countries.
22:04I believe that this has been the edition with the highest level in terms of film screening,
22:10in the films that have participated, but above all in the theoretical events.
22:15The theoretical events have been very important and I believe that they will continue to nourish
22:21Cuban cinema.
22:22In reality, at the moment that Cuban cinema is going through, this space is much needed.
22:28One aspect to highlight is that this year the festival was focused on promoting the
22:32development of cinema in the eastern region of Cuba.
22:35So they paid attention not only to Holguín, but also the provinces of Camagüey, Las Tunas,
22:40Granma, Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba.
22:48We have come to the end of this year's Brief, but you can find this and many other stories
