JJ McCarthy to Undergo Knee Surgery on Meniscus Injury

00:00JJ McCarthy has a torn meniscus that he suffered at some point in the preseason
00:08debut against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday afternoon. The timetable is a
00:14little bit precarious as well as JJ McCarthy will undergo surgery this week
00:20and while on the operating table the surgeons will determine if it needs to
00:25be a full repair which would sideline JJ McCarthy for the entirety of this
00:30rookie season probably prolonging his debut until 2025 or if it is just a
00:36simple trimming of the torn meniscus which would allow JJ McCarthy it appears
00:42to return at some point in 2024. Yeah and it look it's not do or die as we said
00:48for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 but you would like to gauge this season it's
00:53not really a wins and losses typically when you have a rookie quarterback as we
00:56state so many times at the end of the year you realize oh I think we got our
00:59franchise quarterback played well down the stretch picked up a couple wins yes
01:02we didn't make the playoffs but the bigger picture is we got our guy you're
01:06not gonna have that now it sort of feels like the Indianapolis Colts Ben right
01:09you watched last year with how talented Anthony Richardson is he's starting this
01:13year but he didn't get very many games last year so the jury is still out
01:16whether or not you think he can be your franchise guy you're hoping he looks the
01:20part and certainly can play that part we get that same vibes because bringing
01:23Sam Darnold from day number one never made sense to me not in the fact he
01:27didn't think he was gonna start you have free agency in the draft I understand
01:30how it works out but once McCarthy gets to camp and you draft him high in the
01:33first round he's your franchise guy and if he's in somewhat the same ballpark as
01:37Sam Darnold you would like to see him start week number one now there are
01:41different ways to bring along young quarterbacks we've seen it so many times
01:44and some teams don't have the luxury of having a very good backup quarterback
01:47that's been around the block and some people might even say Don what do you
01:50talk about Sam Darnold he's a capable guy in a good offense with a very good
01:54offensive coordinator he should be fine week number one but it's just a shame
01:58because you look forward to those young franchise guys getting their feet wet
02:01even if it's like okay you're not gonna start the season we might bring into a
02:04package to win the game just to get you ready because it's five six and seven
02:07maybe that's the landing target for the young guy but he played so well in that
02:11preseason game we were actually thinking game number two in the preseason might
02:15be another showcase for JJ McCarthy it's just a shame the way it went down
02:19hopefully it's not the long-term one it's the short-term one because even as
02:23you say that he might not start the week eight nine or ten at this point if it is
02:27the short-term injury but at least he's taking reps in practice he's around the
02:31team he's engaged he's working out if you go on to the IR what people don't
02:35know about the NFL sometimes Ben you can't practice with the team so the
02:38hey throw him in the IR by week four be practicing he's not allowed to practice
02:41at that point you hope it's not the long-term scenario for the maturation
02:44process of the young quarterback
