00:00:00It definitely needs a lot of work.
00:00:02The Sunburst Inn will be closed for the next 100 days.
00:00:07I absolutely love it.
00:00:09I'm ready to check in.
00:00:10Yes!
00:00:11Since renovating the Sunburst Inn last year,
00:00:13we've been looking for the next hotel to fix up.
00:00:15The Salter Path Inn.
00:00:16This is unique, and there's a reason
00:00:19that these hotel owners reached out to us.
00:00:21Let's check it out.
00:00:21Show us around.
00:00:23The William and Garland Motel.
00:00:25This is like a coastal cottage vibe.
00:00:27Can we take a peek?
00:00:28But there's only one problem.
00:00:30We found two hotels in Salter Path, North Carolina.
00:00:37Right next to each other.
00:00:39We have 100 days.
00:00:40There's just no way we can do both.
00:00:42This is a lobby.
00:00:43This is small, guys.
00:00:45Do you guys give your guests helmets to get in here?
00:00:48We should.
00:00:49Watch your head, Brian.
00:00:51Both the hotels, they obviously need help.
00:00:53But it's like, who needs it the most?
00:00:57What if I took on one of the hotels
00:00:59and you did the other one?
00:01:01Is that crazy?
00:01:02You're kidding, right?
00:01:04We have a lot of talented friends
00:01:06that can come help out.
00:01:07So you want to turn this into a competition?
00:01:09I mean, do you know anybody more competitive than me?
00:01:11Yeah, me.
00:01:12Exactly.
00:01:13I say we go for it.
00:01:15So if we're going to do a big competition,
00:01:16we're going to need a big intro.
00:01:18Oh, I got it.
00:01:20You ready?
00:01:22What happens when you take HGTV's most winning couple.
00:01:26The winner of Rock the Block is Brian and Mika!
00:01:32Oh, my god.
00:01:34The winner of the Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge is.
00:01:37Brian and Mika!
00:01:39Split them up.
00:01:40I'm taking the William and Garland.
00:01:42I've got the Salterpath Inn.
00:01:45Give them new teammates for each space.
00:01:47We all just want to have fun.
00:01:48We're going to win, but you can have fun.
00:01:50I'm not scared.
00:01:51I'm not scared at all.
00:01:52$225,000 each.
00:01:55Can you guys smell that?
00:01:56It smells like victory.
00:01:57I work with family all the time.
00:01:59I know it can be the best and the worst.
00:02:01And 100 days.
00:02:02You trust your husband?
00:02:04That doesn't scare me, so the other team better watch out.
00:02:06To renovate two hotels.
00:02:08If we're going to win, we have to start immediately.
00:02:10To do the single and double rooms,
00:02:12we knock out that lobby.
00:02:13The kitchenette space.
00:02:14The outdoor space.
00:02:15Luxury suite.
00:02:16And then the final icing on the cake,
00:02:18that's going to be the exterior.
00:02:19So we can see who can create the biggest transformation
00:02:23and settle once and for all.
00:02:26Team Mika.
00:02:28Or team Brian.
00:02:30All right, ready?
00:02:31May the best hotel win.
00:02:32Oh, yeah.
00:02:33Oh, yeah.
00:02:34Oh, yeah.
00:02:35Oh, yeah.
00:02:36Oh, yeah.
00:02:37Oh, yeah.
00:02:38Oh, yeah.
00:02:39Oh, yeah.
00:02:40Oh, yeah.
00:02:41Oh, yeah.
00:02:42Oh, yeah.
00:02:43Oh, yeah.
00:02:44Oh, yeah.
00:02:45Oh, yeah.
00:02:46Oh, the sun is rising on day one of this competition.
00:02:49Oh, my gosh.
00:02:51OK, so we're going to be starting this off
00:02:52with the single and double rooms.
00:02:54And I think that's a crucial part
00:02:55of this renovation, for sure.
00:02:57I think it's a good place to start.
00:02:58We're kind of giving them a blueprint and kind of a roadmap
00:03:01to success for the future.
00:03:02Yeah.
00:03:03And let's face it.
00:03:04I mean, you and I really want to win.
00:03:05But the hotels are going to be the real winners.
00:03:07Yeah, I'm feeling good about who I have for this space.
00:03:10And I think you're going to be a little bit
00:03:11shocked and maybe intimidated.
00:03:13You might run into that ocean when you see
00:03:16my team walking down that beach.
00:03:18You are in big trouble.
00:03:19I'm not worried about it.
00:03:21Oh, my gosh.
00:03:23OK.
00:03:24I see who you brought.
00:03:26Look who I brought.
00:03:29Oh, all right.
00:03:29I'm beautiful.
00:03:32I've got it all.
00:03:35I'm beautiful.
00:03:37Oh.
00:03:38Oh, I love it.
00:03:39I got the heavy hitters.
00:03:42You ready?
00:03:43I'm ready.
00:03:44Are you ready?
00:03:45They don't know what they're going to have coming to them.
00:03:46I mean, seriously?
00:03:48My team, the king and queen of the hospitality business,
00:03:52Brian and Sarah Baumler.
00:03:54I want to win this for Brian, for sure.
00:03:56I would like to see Brian take the win because of us.
00:04:00Given the fact that we have a lot of experience
00:04:02with hotels and hospitality, design and construction,
00:04:05I think having that perspective early on in the game
00:04:09could really point Brian in the right direction
00:04:11to win this thing.
00:04:13I think we can provide Brian with some insight
00:04:15for all the little things from the functionality
00:04:17perspective of the hotel from an operation side as well.
00:04:21Because we want to make sure that when we leave,
00:04:23that there is a business that they can operate successfully.
00:04:26So we want to guide them in that way as well.
00:04:28I think part of the strategy for week one
00:04:30is picking the right people to start this off.
00:04:33And John and Christina know a little bit of something
00:04:35about how to renovate and transform a space.
00:04:38And I know they're going to set the tone for this competition.
00:04:41Brian and Sarah, they own a hotel.
00:04:43They've renovated a hotel.
00:04:45But I've stayed in so many hotels.
00:04:48I know what amenities I want.
00:04:49I know how much bed space I need.
00:04:52I know how I want the bathroom to feel.
00:04:54So I think I can bring that to this renovation.
00:04:58We are bringing our background in design and construction,
00:05:00understanding older houses, understanding
00:05:03the history of something, and balance the old and the new.
00:05:06So I really think our particular skill set is really going
00:05:09to help me go win this challenge.
00:05:11It's about kind of pairing up the right team
00:05:13for the right space.
00:05:15So John and Christina, I know you can fix up farmhouses.
00:05:18Have you ever fixed up a hotel?
00:05:20I have nothing to say to you, Brian.
00:05:22I know my team has.
00:05:23You know what?
00:05:24That doesn't matter.
00:05:25It's all design.
00:05:26Oh, oh, oh, stop right there.
00:05:28It's all about operations that can support the design.
00:05:32Your design means nothing.
00:05:34I mean, so I don't have that skill set.
00:05:36But we'll see where this goes.
00:05:37When we win, you'll say, good job, Christina.
00:05:40This is going to be an epic matchup.
00:05:41I cannot wait to see this.
00:05:43But we all just want to have fun.
00:05:45We're going to win, but you can have fun.
00:05:46Yeah, you just keep thinking that.
00:05:49These hotels have a ton of work to do.
00:05:52That's why we brought you out here first.
00:05:55I just hope you don't go home after you see the hotels.
00:05:57Old, beat up, dirty hotels don't scare us.
00:06:00We have 100 days with a budget of $225,000
00:06:03to give them a kickstart and really transform
00:06:06some of the key spaces.
00:06:07And we only have 15 days to complete each space.
00:06:10All right, so the judges of the competition
00:06:12is going to be a surprise.
00:06:14But the criteria we're being judged on
00:06:16are amenities, overall guest experience, design, hotel
00:06:20owners' requests, and room rate increase.
00:06:23We're starting it out with a single and double rooms.
00:06:25And I do think that that's going to kind of give us a template
00:06:27for the rest of the hotel.
00:06:29And the best part is that the winning team of each space
00:06:31wins $5,000 for the charity of their choice.
00:06:34And the overall winning team of the entire competition
00:06:36wins $50,000 to give to a local charity.
00:06:40Are you guys ready to see this?
00:06:41Yes!
00:06:42I mean, let's do it.
00:06:43Next time we see you, it'll be for judging.
00:06:45May the best team win.
00:06:46Good luck, guys.
00:06:46Good luck.
00:06:47You're going to need it.
00:06:48Oh, he better watch out.
00:06:49If you're in it to win it, don't
00:06:51just take what you're given.
00:06:53If you want it, then get it.
00:06:55Oh, yeah.
00:06:55Ooh, ooh, ooh.
00:06:58All right, so Brian and Sarah, welcome to the Salter Path Inn.
00:07:02Oh, look at that.
00:07:04My eye is drawn to the green garbage can.
00:07:07Yeah, and a fire pit.
00:07:08That's a pile of bricks, not a fire pit.
00:07:10It's bleak.
00:07:11It is.
00:07:12It's not inviting.
00:07:13Where's the pool? Where's the splash pad?
00:07:15Where's the gym?
00:07:16There's no amenities here.
00:07:17Yeah, there's nothing.
00:07:18This does need a bit of a tune-up.
00:07:20We want to make sure that when guests come,
00:07:22they're coming for more than just a day.
00:07:24They want to stay here for a week at a time.
00:07:26We need to give them stuff to do.
00:07:28You do.
00:07:29Brief history.
00:07:30So the hotel owners, Rock and Raj,
00:07:32they bought this hotel, and then it turned into a nightmare
00:07:35because a hurricane ripped through this town
00:07:38and ripped apart this hotel.
00:07:39We own the Salter Path Inn, uncle, nephew.
00:07:42So I came from India to pursue the American dream
00:07:45and a better education for me and my sisters.
00:07:48And when we came to this island, we
00:07:50knew this water is amazing.
00:07:52In 2017, we found out about a motel known as the Old Girl
00:07:56Motel.
00:07:57We parked the car, and I took Raj to the boardwalk.
00:07:59We looked at each other.
00:08:00The view itself sold us.
00:08:02We purchased a hotel, rooms unseen.
00:08:05Just the view itself was the selling point.
00:08:07That's right.
00:08:08Let's run into the water.
00:08:09Yeah, let's go.
00:08:11What a day.
00:08:12Nice weather, the ocean, great breeze.
00:08:15Pretty much have this beach to ourself.
00:08:162018, Hurricane Florence comes in.
00:08:19And it was devastating.
00:08:20We had so much water that flooded.
00:08:2285% of the rooms were damaged.
00:08:24We hired three different contractors.
00:08:26We spent about a million dollars,
00:08:28and we have done the best we can.
00:08:31We do need professional help.
00:08:32So when do you think I'm going to take over the hotel?
00:08:35Is that what you want to do?
00:08:36Yeah.
00:08:37All right.
00:08:38We're never going to sell this hotel.
00:08:40We're going to keep this as part of our legacy,
00:08:42as part of our family.
00:08:44Your two boys, my two boys, I mean,
00:08:46they're going to take it to the future.
00:08:47They've been dealt a bad hand, but it's time for us
00:08:51to kind of re-imagine the Salter Path Inn.
00:08:53And you two are the perfect people for that job.
00:08:55Let's go check in and check it out.
00:08:57Yeah.
00:08:57Let's go.
00:08:58Let's go.
00:08:59Let's go.
00:09:00Let's go.
00:09:01Let's go.
00:09:02Let's go.
00:09:02Let's go.
00:09:05John and Christina, I'm so happy that you
00:09:07agreed to help me out with this design.
00:09:08So welcome to William and Garland.
00:09:11This is a motel that's been around since the 1950s.
00:09:14Check it out.
00:09:15It's cute.
00:09:16It is cute.
00:09:17I like the throwback feel.
00:09:19Big Will, he built this in the 1950s.
00:09:21It started as a four-room fishing shack,
00:09:24and his granddaughter and husband will be taking over.
00:09:28The William and Garland Motel was started in 1954
00:09:31by my grandfather, Big William, and my great-grandfather,
00:09:35Garland.
00:09:37My grandfather and grandmother, Peggy,
00:09:38have been running the business.
00:09:40And it's finally time for them to retire and relax.
00:09:44We met in San Francisco during the pandemic.
00:09:47And right after we got married, Perry and I
00:09:49decided to quit our jobs and take over the motel business.
00:09:53We are expecting our first baby girl.
00:09:56And her name is going to be Sylvia.
00:09:58What generation are we up to with Sylvia?
00:10:00Fifth generation.
00:10:01Wow.
00:10:02Perry and I actually live on the property.
00:10:05Since we arrived, Perry and I took on the responsibilities
00:10:08of every job at the motel.
00:10:10He's got the worst of the whole deal right here.
00:10:13How so?
00:10:14Because I see him all the time doing something out there.
00:10:17We definitely need help with a lot of the aesthetics
00:10:20and updates for the business.
00:10:22So many of our guests have been coming to us for 20,
00:10:25even 30 years.
00:10:26And we want them to continue to feel welcome to come back.
00:10:30And we also want to market towards their children
00:10:33and future generations to come.
00:10:35How much retro are we going with?
00:10:37See, I think that's kind of the key to winning this competition
00:10:40is we want to, you know, honor the past,
00:10:42but also set them up for a very successful future.
00:10:45Yeah.
00:10:45Well, just me looking at this place,
00:10:48I wouldn't want to change it too much.
00:10:50Because this is the reason people stay here
00:10:53is for the nostalgia.
00:10:54And you know, you feel like you're stepping back in time.
00:10:58They have repeat visitors that come back here every year
00:11:00because they like the feeling and the culture
00:11:03that they have at the William and Garland.
00:11:04So we can't ruin that for them.
00:11:05No, we can't ruin it at all.
00:11:06We just want to enhance it for them a little bit.
00:11:08I think we can figure out something
00:11:11that freshens it up, but also keeps it the way it is now.
00:11:15In a short period of time, I don't know.
00:11:16Yeah, that's true.
00:11:17I mean, of course, we haven't seen inside the room yet.
00:11:20Can we?
00:11:20That is the key.
00:11:21That is the key.
00:11:22So let's go check out the room.
00:11:23All right.
00:11:24All right.
00:11:25All right.
00:11:26All right.
00:11:26All right.
00:11:27All right.
00:11:28All right.
00:11:29All right.
00:11:30All right.
00:11:31All right.
00:11:31So I'm going to show you the single room first.
00:11:34All right.
00:11:35Ladies first.
00:11:35Let's see what we're getting into.
00:11:38Whoa.
00:11:50All right.
00:11:51Ladies first.
00:11:51Let's see what we're getting into.
00:11:54Whoa.
00:11:55Welcome to the single suite.
00:11:58Not so sweet yet.
00:11:59You know what?
00:12:00I'll be honest.
00:12:01It's not horrible.
00:12:02It's got that motel off the highway.
00:12:04You're driving somewhere.
00:12:06You need somewhere to stay real quick.
00:12:07Even the layout doesn't really make sense to me.
00:12:09Like, having the fridge right here at the foot of the bed,
00:12:12it can be so much better.
00:12:14It doesn't scream coastal at all.
00:12:15Not at all.
00:12:16But we want it to.
00:12:17So Rock and Raj, the hotel owners,
00:12:19they love vacationing to Tulum, Mexico.
00:12:21So we really want to have that as an inspiration
00:12:24for the entire hotel.
00:12:26And luckily for these spaces, that's
00:12:27pretty much their only request.
00:12:29Are we going to experiment with all different colors?
00:12:31I would love to.
00:12:32They are not scared of color.
00:12:34I think we go wild in here.
00:12:35I'd love to do something creative with the headboard.
00:12:37I mean, that is so boring right there.
00:12:39OK.
00:12:40Definitely some statement lighting in here.
00:12:41We can make this room feel brand new.
00:12:44What if we did some type of built-in on this wall?
00:12:46Running wall to wall that basically
00:12:48looks like a floating shelf, but we make it more interactive.
00:12:52So it's a spot that you could sit to do your makeup,
00:12:55or it could be a desk spot and still having floor space.
00:12:58Underneath it.
00:12:59Underneath, so you could roll your suitcase under it.
00:13:01It's a good use of space, I do have to admit.
00:13:03And then you're going to have the bed.
00:13:04This one doesn't go down to the floor.
00:13:07Oh my gosh.
00:13:08There's a reason hotel beds should go to the floor.
00:13:11It costs you more from a housekeeping perspective
00:13:15to clean under there, because they
00:13:16have to vacuum under there, they have to sweep,
00:13:18they have to wash the floors, everything.
00:13:19So beds going all the way down.
00:13:22Take the bed to the floor, sconce on either side.
00:13:24And then what if we did beautiful fluting
00:13:27on the ceiling?
00:13:28And then we could even bring it down on either side
00:13:32over the nightstand.
00:13:33I like that.
00:13:34Can we bring some cold lighting system
00:13:37to the ceiling, because we want to showcase
00:13:39what we're doing here.
00:13:40I like that.
00:13:41Probably another LVP floor, warmer, clean it up.
00:13:44What's going on this wall?
00:13:45Dressers.
00:13:46Maybe we just go wider rather than deeper.
00:13:47Yeah.
00:13:48Look at this.
00:13:49We've got a mini split here, three feet down the same.
00:13:51If we push that up the top, you can
00:13:53put a whole wardrobe unit in there.
00:13:54I love that, because that, to me, is wasted space.
00:13:55It is.
00:13:57We could also move the fridge underneath all that.
00:14:00This bathroom is going to be an issue.
00:14:02Why?
00:14:02Have a look.
00:14:03Go look.
00:14:05Oh, boy.
00:14:06Yeah.
00:14:07So this is existing window.
00:14:09Like, this hasn't been replaced.
00:14:11At all.
00:14:12And we've got a lot of water damage that's happened.
00:14:14In the tub, does anyone really want to have
00:14:16a bath in this style of hotel?
00:14:19I think this whole bathroom comes out,
00:14:21lose the tub, stand-up shower.
00:14:23New window, new tile everywhere.
00:14:25Great.
00:14:27Extend the countertop so that we have a spot
00:14:29to put a hairdryer or products.
00:14:31Right.
00:14:32Looking at this for the first time,
00:14:33I'm thinking it's going to be a heavy lift, for sure.
00:14:36But I think we can do it.
00:14:38I'm competitive, and I go all in.
00:14:43So I have a hard time pulling back.
00:14:44But this is not my hotel.
00:14:46This is Brian and Mika's showdown.
00:14:48They are battling it out.
00:14:49So I will be there to support Brian.
00:14:53But I have to remember, this is his game.
00:14:55All right, what do you say we go check out the double room?
00:14:57Let's do it.
00:14:58All right.
00:14:59Oh, oh, oh.
00:15:01OK.
00:15:03Welcome to room 16.
00:15:05Oh.
00:15:06Oh, yeah.
00:15:07Take a deep breath.
00:15:09This room really lets you know you have arrived.
00:15:13It's like the smell of damp snot.
00:15:15That's what it smells like.
00:15:16We have to work on the aroma in this room.
00:15:17Yeah.
00:15:19Hey, Brian, can we get a level on that light?
00:15:20Yeah, I'm just noticing.
00:15:21It's like, you know, did you want to read, or can I read?
00:15:25You could probably repurpose that somewhere.
00:15:28Oh, oh.
00:15:30Hey, we're not starting demo yet.
00:15:32Who invited the bomblers?
00:15:34All right, we'll keep that.
00:15:35These rooms are pretty much the exact same square footage,
00:15:38same layout.
00:15:39But I want it to feel completely different.
00:15:41So every time a guest comes back year after year,
00:15:43they get a different experience each room.
00:15:46This is the main bed wall.
00:15:47It's got to be.
00:15:48I want to draw their eye across.
00:15:50So what if we do some, like, scallop design back there?
00:15:54Almost like a fence.
00:15:55It could be like ocean waves.
00:15:57What if we did some hanging lighting?
00:15:59Why don't we mix it up, and we do
00:16:01a bigger pendant in the middle and two smaller
00:16:03sconces on either side?
00:16:04That'd be cool.
00:16:05The fridge and the microwave are already over there.
00:16:08We're doing the same thing here, cabinet.
00:16:09Yeah.
00:16:11Same equipment across here with the TV,
00:16:12standardize those kind of things.
00:16:13I like that.
00:16:14What about the bathroom?
00:16:15Oh, it's worse.
00:16:16Is it worse?
00:16:17It's definitely worse.
00:16:18Oh, it's worse.
00:16:19Oh, but look at all the water damage.
00:16:21And look at this, we got mold on the window.
00:16:23That explains the smell.
00:16:25And I don't know who thought drapery over a toilet
00:16:29was a good idea.
00:16:31Yeah, we're going to have to open this whole thing out,
00:16:33take the tub out, put ventilation in,
00:16:35new window, new tile.
00:16:36And we'll need to figure out some added storage
00:16:38and counter space here.
00:16:41So what's our budget?
00:16:42So I'm thinking of all the work we have to do in this room.
00:16:46I think $30,000 max is what we can spend, not per room.
00:16:49So $15,000 to each room.
00:16:52I don't want to overspend in this space
00:16:54because we have a lot of other spaces to touch.
00:16:56That's going to be tight.
00:16:57But limiting it to $15,000 a room, you can recoup that.
00:17:00You've got to look at this, like how many nights
00:17:02do we have to rent this room out until we recoup
00:17:03what we've spent on it?
00:17:05After that, it's all added to the bottom line.
00:17:07And the maintenance to upkeep that room.
00:17:08See, I'm so glad you're on my team.
00:17:09Like, this is the experience and expertise
00:17:12I need to beat Mika next door.
00:17:15I think we should empty these rooms out.
00:17:16Let the demo begin.
00:17:17Put your head on my pillow.
00:17:19I'm a king of the hill.
00:17:22It's up.
00:17:23Do not.
00:17:24Oh.
00:17:24Yeah.
00:17:26That smell.
00:17:28I'm a king of the hill.
00:17:33Sound of progress.
00:17:35There we go.
00:17:36Who needs a crowbar?
00:17:39You know what's crazy?
00:17:40The room already looks better.
00:17:42I'm a king of the hill.
00:17:48Let's go check out the room.
00:17:50Here we are.
00:17:51This is going to be the single room.
00:17:54Whoa.
00:17:54What?
00:18:01All right, you guys.
00:18:02Here we are.
00:18:03This is going to be the single room.
00:18:08Whoa.
00:18:09What?
00:18:10I swear it's almost my grandparents' floor.
00:18:12Ha ha.
00:18:13Listen, I want your candid feedback.
00:18:16We have to start with taking in what exists
00:18:19and what are we going to transform.
00:18:20All I'm going to say is nostalgic is good.
00:18:23Floor is bad.
00:18:24This is horrible.
00:18:25Um, wow.
00:18:26I hate that the paneling does not match.
00:18:28But I do love the paneling.
00:18:30I think it's very period appropriate.
00:18:32Yeah.
00:18:33This is the epitome of the history of William and Garland.
00:18:35So I'm thinking we need to incorporate some kind of wood
00:18:38handling in the new design.
00:18:40But I might, like, pay homage to it.
00:18:41Yeah, for sure.
00:18:42You know, part of the judging criteria
00:18:44is going to be based on following the wish list
00:18:47of the hotel owners, Amanda and Perry.
00:18:49There are some staple features that they
00:18:51want to see in this new design.
00:18:53However, I feel like part of me knows
00:18:55that when you think of a beach, it's lighter colors.
00:18:57It's light and airy.
00:18:58And I feel like William and Garland
00:19:00is the opposite of that.
00:19:01But I also feel like because it is different than anything
00:19:05I've ever seen, maybe that's how you set yourself
00:19:08apart from the competition.
00:19:10We have $35,000 for both rooms.
00:19:12We could save money on a lamp.
00:19:14OK.
00:19:15Oh, I do love the lamp.
00:19:16Because that lamp is awesome.
00:19:17I love the lamp.
00:19:19I do think that I want those moments of history
00:19:22throughout the room.
00:19:23But it feels, like, almost too dark in here.
00:19:26It feels too tight.
00:19:26Yeah.
00:19:28To make the room feel bigger and the ceilings feel taller,
00:19:29maybe we, like, break the room up with, like, paneling below.
00:19:32And then wallpaper is potentially above that.
00:19:34And that brings the eye up.
00:19:36And it helps us with our ceiling height.
00:19:38I really do think that would be a cool way to break it up.
00:19:40The headboard, I mean.
00:19:41I have a word for it.
00:19:43OK.
00:19:44Dumpster.
00:19:45All right, so no painting it, maybe kind of repurposing.
00:19:48On projects I work on that have small bedrooms,
00:19:50sometimes we integrate some of the furniture.
00:19:51OK.
00:19:53So you can do some sort of built-in headboard and nightstand.
00:19:55So the room will feel bigger.
00:19:56It'll be so much easier to clean.
00:19:57That's really smart.
00:19:59I think we need to go luxury vinyl,
00:20:00just out of sheer practicality.
00:20:02I think so.
00:20:04The setup over here, it doesn't make sense to me.
00:20:06Yeah, this is just a hot mess.
00:20:09I don't know that we have room for a closet anywhere.
00:20:11So we need to keep a dresser.
00:20:13Something that's not quite as bulky.
00:20:15That makes more sense.
00:20:16What about the bathroom?
00:20:17Let's take a peek in there.
00:20:18Oh.
00:20:23Very retro.
00:20:24I mean, it's extra tight.
00:20:26I think if we want to raise the nightly rate here,
00:20:29I think a bathroom is something that's very important.
00:20:32Yeah, you're right.
00:20:33This wall just feels so massive.
00:20:37The bathroom's small enough to begin with.
00:20:38So if this were to come down, it would be glass.
00:20:40That would be great.
00:20:42We're going to need new plumbing fixtures, new tile.
00:20:44And we need a new vanity.
00:20:46Shall we go check out the double room?
00:20:48The double room.
00:20:48All right.

00:20:54All right.

00:21:02This is our double room, so you figure up to four guests.

00:21:16This feels a little bit much to hang out in your hotel
00:21:18room facing the wall.
00:21:19A lot of wood paneling in this room, too, as you can see.
00:21:22What I do like is this common headboard moment.
00:21:24Yeah, it ties both these beds together.
00:21:27Big Will created this, and I think
00:21:29this might be a good starting point
00:21:32if we think it's going to work with a new design.
00:21:34So we're full on built-in beds, again,
00:21:36for cleanability and space saving.
00:21:38Yes.
00:21:39Built-in nightstands, and then we'll
00:21:40use that headboard detail from Big Willie wall
00:21:42to wall as well to cap it.
00:21:44I love that idea.
00:21:45And we can create a cool pop of color with the wallpaper
00:21:48and bringing back some of that wood paneling.
00:21:50I feel good about that.
00:21:51I actually like these chairs.
00:21:53I love the tufting on it.
00:21:54I love how vintage they are.
00:21:56Maybe we just freshen up the look and keep them.
00:21:58The kitchenette here is taking up a lot of this room.
00:22:02They said the kitchenette is not a necessity,
00:22:04and I think storage is.
00:22:07We don't have a closet in here.
00:22:09So maybe if we open this up, we can
00:22:11create some kind of built-in closet storage,
00:22:13because we have four people in here.
00:22:14We definitely need a mini fridge.
00:22:16I agree with that.

00:27:14and they're not going to cost us a lot of money in the future.
00:27:18Yeah.
00:27:25A lot of work is happening at the William & Garland.
00:27:28Right now, we've got drywall going in from the walls
00:27:31that we removed in the bathroom, opening up the shower,
00:27:33reconfigured the plumbing a little bit,
00:27:35and we've also got new vinyl flooring going in,
00:27:37which is going to be easy to maintain, low maintenance,
00:27:40easy to keep clean, and more practical than the existing
00:27:43floor they had in the rooms.
00:27:45I don't want to come in here and try
00:27:46to make William & Garland something it's not.
00:27:48We should embrace the history, and we're
00:27:50doing that by repurposing the headboard in the double room
00:27:53and bringing back some of that wood paneling in both rooms.
00:27:56The single room was basically 100% wood panel.
00:28:01Mm-hmm, too much wood panel.
00:28:02It was a lot, so I kind of think this is a good compromise.
00:28:04We're using paneling, but we're bringing in color.
00:28:07Right, it's good.
00:28:08It'll feel really earthy.
00:28:10Every paint color makes you feel something different.
00:28:11This is kind of relaxing.
00:28:12No, I like that it's a color you can really build on.
00:28:16They had this paneling that was really important.
00:28:18Big Will put it up himself.
00:28:19We want to honor that, but we don't want to repeat it.
00:28:22We don't want to put it back the same way it was before.
00:28:24So we made a decision to do kind of a wainscoting
00:28:27around the single room so that we could kind of throw back
00:28:30to that, but not do it just the same it was,
00:28:32to modernize it a bit.
00:28:34We're painting the green so Amanda and Perry
00:28:36can make some more green.
00:28:37So these are headboards that Big Will put up,
00:28:41and we're going to refinish them and put
00:28:43them right back in the room.
00:28:45With us, we're always looking for materials to reuse.
00:28:49It just brings an element to the space
00:28:51that gives it that cozy, historical feel.
00:28:56This is actually going to save money,
00:28:57but it's also bringing some of this history
00:28:59back into the room.
00:29:01And I think Amanda is going to be really happy as well.
00:29:04Thankfully, we were able to fix the leak
00:29:06in the double room bathroom.
00:29:08Good news is it was only a $250 piece
00:29:10to fix the P-trap, which will keep us in our $30,000 budget.
00:29:14Today, we're adding a waterproofing membrane
00:29:16to the new stand-up shower to prevent mold and mildew
00:29:19down the road.
00:29:20This LVP is going to look so good.
00:29:23They brighten up the entire space.
00:29:25It's going to look like a real bathroom.
00:29:27It's going to look like a real bathroom.
00:29:28It's going to look like a real bathroom.
00:29:30It's going to look like a real bathroom.
00:29:32It's going to brighten up the entire space.
00:29:33I mean, this double room is kind of small.
00:29:36These floors are going to lighten it up
00:29:37and make it feel actually bigger than it is.
00:29:39It's going to be very easy to keep clean
00:29:40with everybody coming from the beach.
00:29:42So low maintenance, high durability.
00:29:46And it looks incredible.
00:29:50Okay, perfect.
00:29:51Yeah.
00:29:52You don't have to go all the way.
00:29:54Just match your pattern there.
00:29:56You are a fabulous apprentice, Brian.
00:30:00All right, boom.
00:30:01Let's cut it and I'll do the next one.
00:30:05For the double room,
00:30:06we're going to run the headboard wall to wall.
00:30:08Again, we want the room to feel as big,
00:30:10as open, as airy as we can.
00:30:13I think the ease of this to have two double beds in there,
00:30:15if you needed to swap it out
00:30:17and do one king bed in there in the future,
00:30:19you could do that.
00:30:20I also think the detail on the scallop edge
00:30:22will be whimsical and fun.
00:30:25All right, that's looking good.
00:30:31All right.
00:30:37Our vision is starting to come to life.
00:30:39We're installing the crown molding,
00:30:40which gives the space a nice traditional vibe.
00:30:43It also frames out the beautiful wallpaper
00:30:45that we're installing on the walls.
00:30:47It's going to tie in perfectly.
00:30:48So in the bathroom, I mean,
00:30:49we're taking a little bit of a risk
00:30:51with this checkerboard tile,
00:30:52but I feel like the bathrooms in this hotel,
00:30:54they have to be memorable.
00:30:56It's the one opportunity you have
00:30:58to really make an impact on guests.
00:31:00It's bold, it's beautiful.
00:31:02You won't forget it.
00:31:04I love repetition.
00:31:05So I love the idea of a similar wallpaper
00:31:07in the two spaces,
00:31:08but differentiating with color.
00:31:10I think that'll help them sell the spaces later.
00:31:12One of the spaces is going with kind of the rust tones.
00:31:15We're trying to give it that 70s nostalgic retro vibe.
00:31:18And I think the color palette will do that really well.
00:31:20You know, on the other wallpaper
00:31:21with kind of a blue backdrop,
00:31:23I think that speaks to the ocean a little bit.
00:31:25It still gives us the same feel we're after,
00:31:28but it differentiates the two spaces.
00:31:31The furniture in the single room
00:31:31was way too large to scale.
00:31:33So Christina's going to upholster a headboard
00:31:36that'll be built into the wall.
00:31:37It's gonna make much more sense.
00:31:39The room felt like a cave before.
00:31:41Like the room was all wood.
00:31:43Like it was just way too heavy in there.
00:31:45So it feels like you want softening for acoustics.
00:31:47You feel like you want softening
00:31:48so it just envelops you a bit more.
00:31:50So I think this will be a nice unifying moment at the back.
00:31:52It'll also make the space feel much bigger
00:31:55because the bed won't be pushing out.
00:31:56So I think this is a really affordable way
00:31:58to unify the space,
00:31:59help with acoustics and, you know,
00:32:01just make it feel more luxurious.
00:32:05I'm really glad that we went with the floating nightstand.
00:32:09I think it's just going to be easy to clean under them.
00:32:12You're not going to have the four legs
00:32:13and you've got a vacuum around.
00:32:15And I just think it's going to really modernize
00:32:18this space a lot more.
00:32:19You're so handy, my friend.
00:32:21What do you think?
00:32:22Oh my gosh.
00:32:23I love the look of that wood.
00:32:25I'm going to add some drawers in here.
00:32:27So you have the space inside in a drawer
00:32:29and you also have the surface area on top.
00:32:31Oh my gosh.
00:32:32This is a beauty.
00:32:34I can't wait to see Brian cry when he moves.
00:32:36I love it!
00:32:38Yes!
00:32:42How do you lug this stuff around all the time?
00:32:44This is heavy.
00:32:44It smells good around here.
00:32:46Hey!
00:32:46Are y'all smelling that?
00:32:47Because I smell like barbecue.
00:32:48I thought a little bit,
00:32:49but I didn't know if somebody just ordered lunch.
00:32:51I'm wondering if Brian has like an outdoor grill
00:32:53or something going on over there.
00:32:55Can we take a little stroll?
00:32:56Since they want to come over here and drop off mattresses,
00:32:59we should go see what they got to eat.
00:33:00All right, y'all want to go see what they're doing?
00:33:02Walk?
00:33:02Gotta keep it on low.
00:33:03Yes.
00:33:04I got it!
00:33:10It is barbecue.
00:33:11Wait, wait.
00:33:12No, wait.
00:33:13Tree, tree, tree, tree.
00:33:13Go, go, go.
00:33:14I feel like the crew's going to work harder
00:33:16now that we're feeding them with barbecue, right?
00:33:18I think so, too.
00:33:19Hold on, we're clear.
00:33:19Go.
00:33:22Oh my God.
00:33:24Watch out, there they come.
00:33:27Does it appear that they have more workers
00:33:28over here than we do?
00:33:29I think so, yeah.
00:33:31Do you see someone?
00:33:32Oh, Sarah, Sarah just looked.
00:33:34That's your wife.
00:33:35Wait, she's pointing.
00:33:37That's your wife!
00:33:38Hold on, hold on, are you serious?
00:33:43Coming up.
00:33:44Who's going to be judging?
00:33:45I know, this is so strange.
00:33:46We're not only revealing the spaces to the judges,
00:33:49but we're also revealing the judges to you.
00:33:51Oh my gosh!
00:33:52Oh!
00:33:54That's your wife!
00:33:55Hold on, hold on, are you serious?
00:33:57We're busted.
00:33:58Uh-oh, here they come.
00:33:59Hey, this is for our crew only.
00:34:02Wait a second.
00:34:03No, no, no.
00:34:04Time out.
00:34:04Chris, do not serve that.
00:34:05Wait, wait, wait.
00:34:06They're not welcome here.
00:34:07We should serve a couple of our workers
00:34:08because I definitely lost some of my crew.
00:34:09They'd rather work at the winning hotel.
00:34:11Oh!
00:34:13Team, are we going to share?
00:34:15Sharing is caring.
00:34:16Don't ask him.
00:34:17As winners, we'll be kind and we'll share.
00:34:19I am the sharing-est sharer that they'll ever share.
00:34:21I am the sharing-est sharer that they'll ever share.
00:34:23Really?
00:34:24I think we should share with John and Mika.
00:34:26Oh!
00:34:28Okay, I'll tell you what.
00:34:29So you guys have time for picnics over here.
00:34:31I'll be nice, I'll be nice.
00:34:33Is he going to cut that in threes?
00:34:35Wow, that is, that's so generous.
00:34:38You know what, Brian?
00:34:39You have to remember that at the end of this,
00:34:41we live together.
00:34:42Give me that!
00:34:45There you go, you guys are full.
00:34:46See ya.
00:34:47See ya.
00:34:48Thanks for coming to our barbecue.
00:34:49You guys are holding up the line.
00:34:50Guys, come on, come on.
00:34:52Sorry.
00:34:53Enjoy!
00:34:54I gotta go finish my lunch.
00:34:55All right, guys, get back to work.
00:34:57Ha ha ha!
00:35:03All right, so here's the wardrobe we're working on.
00:35:05So 42 inches wide.
00:35:0642.
00:35:0724 inches deep.
00:35:08Two sides we're going to do open shelving.
00:35:10We'll build that enclosure for the refrigerator.
00:35:12Yep, put some bars in there, hang some clothes.
00:35:14It's going to be much better storage
00:35:15than what they used to have.
00:35:17All right, so 42, 24.
00:35:1842, 24!
00:35:19Sounds like a football play.
00:35:20Hut!
00:35:21Cut, yeah.
00:35:2242, 24, cut!
00:35:25One element we're going for for this entire hotel
00:35:28is luxury, and let's face it,
00:35:30right now they feel like shoe boxes.
00:35:31So we're adding crown molding in the double room
00:35:34and fluted wood in the single room
00:35:35to really give it that luxury feel.
00:35:37The interesting thing, too, when you're in a hotel,
00:35:39you're there for a few nights.
00:35:41So why not have fun with something
00:35:42that you may not do in your own home?
00:35:44You wouldn't want to stare at it every single day.
00:35:46But everyone comes on vacation,
00:35:48they take photos of these fun spaces,
00:35:50and this is a fun room.
00:35:52We're taking a big risk with the tile choices
00:35:55in both bathrooms.
00:35:57Rock and Raj really love cobalt blue,
00:35:59so we're going to do that in the stand-up shower
00:36:01for the double room,
00:36:02and go with the sunset yellow for the single bathroom.
00:36:06It's almost going to be like waking up with the sunrise
00:36:10and going to bed with the sunset.
00:36:13Nice!
00:36:20So two more days, and we're getting judged
00:36:22on what we are doing with the single and double room,
00:36:25and I really feel like we have
00:36:27to make sure everything is perfect.
00:36:29So today we're painting the ceilings
00:36:31because in a place like this where you have low ceilings
00:36:33and you're going to have to look at them anyway,
00:36:35you might as well dress them up.
00:36:36Are you good on your side?
00:36:37Yeah, hold on.
00:36:38Feeling pretty good about this.
00:36:40It looks amazing, right?
00:36:41The green below, anchoring it down
00:36:43and like seeing the color above,
00:36:45I think it's going to be a lot of fun.
00:36:47I will say this wallpaper is definitely fun.
00:36:50It's got a lot of rich colors,
00:36:51so I'm actually glad that we are not doing the entire wall.
00:36:54Very heavy.
00:36:55It would be too heavy, right?
00:36:56So I think that the paneling here
00:36:58is just going to kind of break that up,
00:37:00plus give it some texture, that's always fun.
00:37:02We're still recreating the paneling
00:37:04in a very tasteful kind of way.
00:37:06But I love to break it up
00:37:07and add some tambour to this feature wall
00:37:09because it's got a nice,
00:37:10it's got a nice,
00:37:11it's got a nice,
00:37:12it's got a nice,
00:37:13it's got a nice,
00:37:14it's got a nice,
00:37:14it's got a nice,
00:37:15it's got a nice,
00:37:16it's got a nice shape and texture to it.
00:37:18In combination with that really cool headboard
00:37:21that we salvaged from the original room,
00:37:23that's going to dress it up.
00:37:26I do feel like that is such a nice accent
00:37:29between the tambour and the wallpaper.
00:37:31Well, I think the way that there's this reading,
00:37:32I didn't even notice before,
00:37:34like this slight reading in this.
00:37:35That's what I'm noticing.
00:37:36I like how they repeat each other that way.
00:37:38It's funny how we had to change a lot of things
00:37:40in this room,
00:37:41but the headboard was like,
00:37:42no, no, no, no, I still fit.
00:37:43That sentimental value of like these touches
00:37:45that Amanda and Perry will feel familiar right away
00:37:48when they walk in.
00:37:49It's so true to the brand.
00:37:50It's so true to the origination of William and Garland.
00:37:53I mean, Amanda's grandpa, Big Will, built this.
00:37:55And it fits with the new design aesthetic.
00:37:57So I think it was just meant to be.
00:37:58Yes.
00:37:59This Rita Tambor is where it's at.
00:38:01What you know about that, Brian?
00:38:02Yeah.
00:38:03Whoa.
00:38:24All right.
00:38:26That's the thing of beauty.
00:38:28Hey, Brian, Sarah, I got to show
00:38:30you guys something beautiful.
00:38:31Oh, that built-in does look beautiful.
00:38:33You ready?
00:38:34I'm ready.
00:38:35Oh!
00:38:36Yes, you can see yourselves.
00:38:37I'm looking at your reflection.
00:38:39You're going to scare the hotel guests away, Brian.
00:38:40This is so much better.
00:38:42Look at all the storage we gained.
00:38:43It's a great spot.
00:38:44Well, it's more functional.
00:38:46You always had this wasted space that wasn't used at all,
00:38:48but now we have hanging, a spot for your luggage, wine fridge,
00:38:52extra display there for minibar, right?
00:38:54So you'd set up anything there.
00:38:55You still have a mirror.
00:38:56It swivels so you can hang something on the back of it.
00:38:59For a hotel, this is exactly what you need.
00:39:01So I'm really curious to know what Mika's doing over
00:39:04at her hotel with John and Christina.
00:39:06I mean, the advantage that Mika's hotel has
00:39:09is it's been in that family for generations.
00:39:12So people know it.
00:39:12They love it.
00:39:13They come back.
00:39:14The Salter Path Inn, these guys are basically
00:39:16making a fresh start with this hotel,
00:39:18and they're not known yet.
00:39:19I mean, with the hurricane, all the destruction
00:39:21that they've had.
00:39:22So it really gives us a lot of freedom in our design.
00:39:25Maybe we should ask the mirror.
00:39:26Mirror, mirror on the wall, which
00:39:29team is going to win it all?
00:39:30Ah, there they are.
00:39:33There's the winner.
00:39:34All right.
00:39:35Let's go.
00:39:36All right.
00:39:37Now for the rest of it.
00:39:38The hotel owners really don't want
00:39:39these rooms to feel cluttered.
00:39:41So we're going to get really creative to maximize
00:39:43every square inch in these rooms.
00:39:45And we're doing that by creating multifunctional furniture
00:39:48like this desk in the single room.
00:39:50I love it.
00:39:51I love it.
00:39:51I think from all of the traveling that Brian and I do,
00:39:54we look for different zones in the room.
00:39:57I don't want to sit on the bed all the time.
00:39:59So if I can have an area to work, have a bite to eat,
00:40:01or use as a vanity station, we are
00:40:03checking multiple boxes for the end user
00:40:06and for the guest experience.
00:40:11Can I do my makeup here?
00:40:13Desk.
00:40:13Oh, hello.
00:40:14Built in.
00:40:15Hold on.
00:40:16Let me just.
00:40:17Hold it, hold it.
00:40:17Uh-oh.
00:40:18Woo.
00:40:19That one fits beautifully.
00:40:20Mine ain't fitting.
00:40:23What's going on?
00:40:25Ah.
00:40:26We have a little gap against the wall
00:40:28as well as down by the baseboard.
00:40:31Yeah, no bueno.
00:40:44Ah, so close, but still yet so far from this being perfect.
00:40:49We have a little gap against the wall
00:40:51and also down here at the baseboard.
00:40:52So in order to install this nightstand correctly,
00:40:56we have to uninstall it again and basically notch
00:41:00out the wainscoting.
00:41:01So it's flush against the wall.
00:41:03So much work.
00:41:04I hate doing stuff twice.
00:41:05We don't have a choice.
00:41:06All right, I'm looking flush against the wall,
00:41:08flush against the baseboard.
00:41:10There we go.
00:41:11This nightstand looks so much better now.
00:41:13This gap is closed.
00:41:14These actually turned out very well.
00:41:16I'm happy with this.
00:41:17Look at this.
00:41:18Small space, totally functional vanity area.
00:41:22Adding power.
00:41:23Get a hairdryer going.
00:41:25Do your makeup.
00:41:26It's a great use of the space.
00:41:27Multifunctional.
00:41:29I love how these drawers turned out.
00:41:30I know.
00:41:31The color in this wood is great.
00:41:33It doesn't feel like it competes with yellow.
00:41:35It still feels soft, and it's going
00:41:36to just disappear in a good way.
00:41:38Speaking about soft, you ready to get the bed in?
00:41:40I thought you were talking about me.
00:41:42Well, that too.
00:41:43Let's get the bed.
00:41:44Hey, let's get the bed frame.
00:41:45When you think about owning and operating a hotel,
00:41:49the idea of building things in and creating
00:41:53sturdy, well-made from day one, I think, is important.
00:41:56As hotel owners, you don't want to be having to change
00:41:59things year after year.
00:42:00You don't want to be making that investment.
00:42:03No.
00:42:03Oh.
00:42:05Is there room for one more in the bed?
00:42:07There's always room.
00:42:07Hey.
00:42:09I love how you can't see under the bed.
00:42:10I know that was huge for you.
00:42:12Yes.
00:42:12We brought in the tambour at the corners.
00:42:14That's so that nobody stabs their foot
00:42:16in the middle of the night.
00:42:17It doesn't feel so tight in here,
00:42:19but this bed's starting to feel a little bit tight.
00:42:22So, yeah.
00:42:34I think this looks great.
00:42:35How are you feeling about the straightness?
00:42:36I feel like it's pretty good, girl.
00:42:39So for the single and double rooms,
00:42:40we had to allocate some of the budget
00:42:42to reconfiguring the plumbing to make
00:42:45the bathroom space functional.
00:42:47So cool, and I love, like, turn it on over here,
00:42:49water over there, the little niche over here.
00:42:51I mean, you can make a bathroom as pretty as you want,
00:42:53but if it's not functional, what's the point?
00:42:56So I do feel like it's money well spent.
00:42:58Everybody against the wall?
00:43:01Look how nice that is.
00:43:02So pretty, right?
00:43:03All I can think of is you can vacuum underneath it.
00:43:06That's so smart.
00:43:07Amanda and Perry will appreciate how easy it'll
00:43:09be to turn the room over.
00:43:1124 hours left before the judges arrive.
00:43:14Man, we need every single minute.
00:43:17We really have to finish the built-in wardrobe,
00:43:20because you got to think, if you have four people in here,
00:43:22they're going to need storage to keep their things.
00:43:24OK, John, I need to match up what you got going on,
00:43:26because I love that tone.
00:43:28Yeah, it looks good.
00:43:29This is like a nice, mellow brown
00:43:31that will still let this jump out,
00:43:33but it won't compete with it.
00:43:35It'll live well together.
00:43:36I hope me and Brian live well together in this competition.
00:43:38We are going to beat Brian.
00:43:40Yes!
00:43:45Are these the last of the pieces?
00:43:47Yes, the headboards are coming in.
00:43:49They are.
00:43:50Very nice.
00:43:51I love how the headboard continues the entire width.
00:43:54Well, we want this room to look even bigger,
00:43:57especially when we have to put two beds in here.
00:43:59I love how the scallops play with the tambour.
00:44:02And I love how it maximizes the space, too,
00:44:04because they hug that corner.
00:44:06Streamlining a room, I think, is very important.
00:44:08It would be great to go into these rooms
00:44:10and do something completely unique and different.
00:44:12But if you have a 24-unit hotel
00:44:14and guests usually check out at 11,
00:44:16you have guests coming in by 3,
00:44:18you have four hours max to turn over an entire hotel.
00:44:21So we're trying to make sure
00:44:23that we're providing these hotel owners
00:44:25with options that are actually feasible.
00:44:28Areas like the bed frames,
00:44:30all of the bases of our beds are exactly the same.
00:44:32The flooring is consistent.
00:44:34So you try and find those key areas
00:44:37where you can save time and money operationally.
00:44:43This polyurethane is going to make this white oak pop.
00:44:47And I know Mika is a perfectionist over at her hotel,
00:44:49so we got to make sure everything in this room looks perfect.
00:44:53Who is coming to judge? Is there more than one judge?
00:44:56I've been sworn to secrecy. I can't tell you.
00:44:58Can you at least tell me? I want to tell you, but I can't.
00:45:00Is it one judge, two judge?
00:45:03No, I don't want to give it away.
00:45:04Whoever it's going to be, I know they're going to spend
00:45:06a lot of time over here staring in this mirror.
00:45:08I'm feeling confident. I think we're looking good.
00:45:10All right. We know we're looking good.
00:45:26We are repurposing these chairs.
00:45:28It's one of the first things we saw when we toured the rooms.
00:45:30They had a cool kind of crushed velvet on it,
00:45:32but the color palette wasn't quite right.
00:45:34So we've started reupholstering them.
00:45:35So I think they're going to be great.
00:45:37This is the worst part of the room.
00:45:39This is the worst part about doing some of these competitions.
00:45:42You don't have the time that we are used to.
00:45:44So I feel like we've been getting so much done,
00:45:46but I also still feel, like, frantic
00:45:48that the judges are coming.
00:45:50Yeah. It's crunch time.
00:45:52The judges will be hearing four songs.
00:45:54Come on! We got four songs.
00:45:58Last touch is because our first guests
00:46:01are almost ready to check in.
00:46:03I think we got this in the bag.
00:46:04Mika doesn't have a chance.
00:46:06Jonathan and Christina?
00:46:07You're very confident today. I love it.
00:46:09I just... I was paid to say that.
00:46:10Brian paid me to say that. He did.
00:46:12Good luck, Mika.
00:46:14Come on, come on. We got to go. We got to go.
00:46:16We have, like, less than ten minutes.
00:46:17Ten minutes? Yeah.
00:46:18Yep, yep, yep, yep.
00:46:19So Jim's in the front.
00:46:25We got to go. They're coming.
00:46:32Hustle, hustle, hustle.
00:46:33All right, you guys. Okay.
00:46:35I cannot believe we pulled this off.
00:46:37I think it looks amazing. I know.
00:46:39It's time for the win.
00:46:52Who's going to be judging?
00:46:53I know. This is so strange.
00:46:54I feel like we're not only revealing the spaces to judges,
00:46:57but we're also revealing the judges to you.
00:46:59Yeah.
00:47:00You said judges.
00:47:01Oh, judges too.
00:47:02You just said two judges.
00:47:03So there's two.
00:47:05I've said too much.
00:47:10The judges understand and appreciate
00:47:12the work that goes into this.
00:47:14And they also have experience with competition
00:47:17against family members.
00:47:20Oh, my gosh!
00:47:22There they are.
00:47:24We're in trouble.
00:47:35Oh, my God.
00:47:36Oh, my God.
00:47:38Oh, God.
00:47:39Oh, my goodness.
00:47:40Oh, yeah.
00:47:41Yeah.
00:47:42Oh!
00:47:43Oh!
00:47:47How's it going?
00:47:48Double trouble has arrived.
00:47:50We are very, very grateful that we got not one, but both.
00:47:54As siblings, it's the original rivalry.
00:47:56Yeah.
00:47:57We're like, we could bring an interesting perspective.
00:47:59I work with family all the time.
00:48:00I know it can be the best and the worst.
00:48:02What do you think's harder,
00:48:03brother versus brother or husband versus wife?
00:48:06Well, we don't have to sleep in the same bed
00:48:08at the end of the night.
00:48:09So I think you have it worse than we do.
00:48:11We've dug in a little bit.
00:48:12We've seen the before videos and pictures.
00:48:14Brian, you spent $30,000.
00:48:16Mika, you spent $35,000.
00:48:18So we're going to be looking for that extra spend.
00:48:20Was it allocated the right way?
00:48:22We're judging you on the hotel owner's requests, amenities,
00:48:26guest experience, and then on top of that,
00:48:28it's aesthetic, design.
00:48:30Let me ask somebody who also has very fine, expensive taste.
00:48:33Sarah, how the hell are you doing this?
00:48:36I don't understand how you're going to do rooms for $30,000.
00:48:38I'm picking up quarters off the side of the room.
00:48:41Speaking of quarters,
00:48:42I'm going to flip to see which units we look at first.
00:48:46Okay.
00:48:47All right, Mika, heads or tails?
00:48:49Definitely tails.
00:48:50Oh, boy.
00:48:53Heads it is!
00:48:56We got to go, we got to go.
00:48:57Go, go, go, go, go.
00:49:05Hello.
00:49:06Oh!
00:49:07Our first guests have checked in.
00:49:13Oh, my gosh, guys.
00:49:14First impression is a good one.
00:49:16They wanted family-friendly, bright, fun.
00:49:19Beach, fun, something different.
00:49:21Your choice for color is actually really, really beautiful.
00:49:24Well, there are a lot of ways to go yellow.
00:49:26This was a good one because it can go the wrong way.
00:49:30Well, we have some more yellow,
00:49:32and hopefully it doesn't go the wrong way.
00:49:34Okay, okay.
00:49:35So check this out.
00:49:37Oh!
00:49:40It's kind of like either.
00:49:41So depending on the day, it's almost like a sunset or a sunrise.
00:49:46It's inviting.
00:49:47It's not dark, even though it's a pretty heavy ceiling.
00:49:50It actually draws you in and draws the eye up.
00:49:52The woodwork for me is what really sells it
00:49:55because you have this built-in feature all along the wall here.
00:49:58The white oak looks really nice with the yellow tone.
00:50:00And these are very functional, so we have the nightstand on one side,
00:50:03and on the other side, we've done it a little bit larger
00:50:05and done a built-in vanity.
00:50:09Okay, useless, guys.
00:50:11I can see my chest.
00:50:13If I need to do my chest makeup, I'm good.
00:50:15But this is a great use of space, low-profile desk,
00:50:18so it's making more function out of a small space.
00:50:20I don't know if you guys thought about this,
00:50:22but one thing I've always thought in a hotel when I go in a hotel
00:50:25is people move things around or whatever,
00:50:27and then it must be chaos for the cleaners when they come back.
00:50:30So we put this together, and we kept impressing on Brian.
00:50:33Being in the hospitality industry
00:50:35is ease of maintenance and turning over the room.
00:50:37Yes.
00:50:38These are built-in, so the bed frame,
00:50:40no space underneath for hidden dirt and all that kind of stuff.
00:50:42Oh, amazing.
00:50:43They can come in and reset this room really quickly.
00:50:45It feels fresh.
00:50:47Even right down to the light fixtures, it feels fun.
00:50:49It feels current.
00:50:50Beautiful.
00:50:51Yeah, it does.
00:50:52This is what we want.
00:50:53Totally.
00:50:54What is happening back here?
00:50:55This looks amazing.
00:50:56You guys are going to love this.
00:50:57What is happening?
00:50:58Oh, it's a mirror.
00:50:59So this was just wasted space before, just a fridge, right?
00:51:01Absolutely.
00:51:02I like that you pull that same color through in here,
00:51:04and really great use of space here for more storage.
00:51:06This bathroom is nice.
00:51:08I love that tile.
00:51:09Nice.
00:51:10Bright and beautiful.
00:51:16And it has that retro flair, which I love.
00:51:18How do you like those fixtures?
00:51:20Oh, wow. I like it.
00:51:21You keep playing this theme of making it feel fresh and poppy.
00:51:26The way you tie the tile into the vanity is actually quite nice.
00:51:29I like the color tone.
00:51:30And also, it does look really good with the yellow.
00:51:32You've done a great job.
00:51:33I mean, you're setting them up for success.
00:51:35Very little money created this beautiful aesthetic.
00:51:37I would stay here.
00:51:38I've got to give it to you guys.
00:51:39Tonally, you've got the colors bang on.
00:51:42It looks great. Nailed it.
00:51:43Awesome.
00:51:44I want to see the double.
00:51:45Awesome.
00:51:46Let's go.
00:51:51Here we are.
00:51:52Oh, I like how you switched it up with the headboards, too.
00:51:54Yeah.
00:51:57Okay, I thought you guys did a good job with the yellow in the other room,
00:52:00but I think I like this even better.
00:52:02That room is smaller, but you have more millwork in that room.
00:52:05So, was that more expensive than this room?
00:52:07Not as a whole, because you have double beds.
00:52:09Okay, so what's behind the scallop?
00:52:11Oh, let me show you.
00:52:13Check it out.
00:52:16Little nightlight.
00:52:17It's also a good place for my beer.
00:52:19There you go.
00:52:20There you go.
00:52:21It feels very modern, and I love a dentil mode.
00:52:24I like that you didn't cheap out and just go for a tiny little crown or no crown.
00:52:27I like that you have something substantial.
00:52:29So, you'll see the pops of the blue, the pink, and the sort of beautiful orange-y color.
00:52:33Even in the light fixtures, those are their signature colors.
00:52:36I feel like you guys are really getting the color right.
00:52:39I like that they're very different, but you know it's the same hotel.
00:52:42You haven't had the optical experience of the bathroom yet.
00:52:45You've got to check that out.
00:52:47Oh, whoa, guys.
00:52:51This is like a video game.
00:52:54I'm not as into this bathroom as I was into the other bathroom.
00:52:58I really like the other one.
00:53:00This one is a little trippy for me.
00:53:08I'm not as into this bathroom as I was into the other bathroom.
00:53:12It's sort of a retro throwback, but I don't see this bathroom with this room.
00:53:16They feel like two different rooms.
00:53:18Would your hope just to go a little bold and almost like shocking in a good way?
00:53:22You're going to see cobalt blue throughout the hotel.
00:53:25They love this color, and if you notice with the nightstands and the built-in out here,
00:53:29we also did the exact same color, so we tied the two spaces together.
00:53:33I actually really love the built-ins here.
00:53:35The natural tone looks really nice here.
00:53:37Same idea as the other room except for the natural tone.
00:53:39Creating that dressing space.
00:53:40I love the added function.
00:53:41This is a great transformation.
00:53:42Thanks.
00:53:43I'm just excited to see how Mika measures up, so we will see you later.
00:53:49There you go.
00:53:50It's over.
00:53:54We are as prepared as we can be.
00:53:57Hello.
00:53:58Are you ready?
00:53:59Oh my gosh.
00:54:00Hello there.
00:54:02Paneling done the right way.
00:54:06It's definitely got a unique vibe.
00:54:08With William and Garland being around since 1954,
00:54:10the wood paneling was something actually that really meant a lot to them.
00:54:15So we wanted to incorporate some of the paneling, but just not overwhelm.
00:54:18So even like adding the color paneling, just breaking it up so it's not too dark, right?
00:54:23Because there's not a ton of natural light.
00:54:24Well, the wainscoting is a nice way to break it up,
00:54:27and then bringing the paper in adds a really unique vibe to it.
00:54:31You would think that this room might feel dark and heavy because you have a lot of darker tones,
00:54:35but in reality it doesn't.
00:54:36The color of the ceiling just draws your eye up.
00:54:38That is the right kind of wood paneling compared to what was here before.
00:54:41Is that a padded headboard?
00:54:42Yeah.
00:54:43It's interesting how you did this. I like that.
00:54:44You're not wasting space in a small room.
00:54:46The floating side tables is nice for cleanup as well.
00:54:49Super easy to get in.
00:54:50Is it the same?
00:54:51Yeah, we're looking for the same thing.
00:54:53Oh no.
00:54:54Harder to clean under a bed.
00:54:55Well, we do have the easy clean floors.
00:54:57That's true.
00:54:58This feels sophisticated and inviting at the same time,
00:55:02so I really do like the colors and the choices of your fabrics in here as well.
00:55:05I'm looking at this tile in the bathroom.
00:55:07Are you seeing the pattern tile?
00:55:09And I really want to go look at it.
00:55:10Ooh, go check it out.
00:55:11Oh, whoa.
00:55:16Ooh, I love.
00:55:17Really elegant.
00:55:18The blue is interesting though.
00:55:20Why that blue?
00:55:21One of the things I remember about the hotels I stay in is the bathrooms.
00:55:25I feel like it'll be memorable to guests.
00:55:27I would say as an independent room, it stands out a little bold in the wrong way for me.
00:55:31Okay.
00:55:32But everything else is great.
00:55:33I love the color tone of the cabinets.
00:55:35Again, there's a moody feel to it.
00:55:36This room feels very cool.
00:55:38It feels like you'll come in here, and you're like, oh, yeah.
00:55:41This is like a boutique hotel right on the ocean.
00:55:44I think it's going to get a really great response from anybody.
00:55:47I love that.
00:55:48All right, let's check out the dining room.
00:55:50All right, let's do it.
00:55:57Ooh.
00:55:59More of that same comfortable, inviting, warm tone.
00:56:03This room actually has some original William and Garland pieces in it.
00:56:11So we repurposed the headboards that were originally here.
00:56:15We cut them down, sanded them, put some stain on them.
00:56:18It was really important to the owners that those stayed.
00:56:22It's a way to nod to the past without overdoing it.
00:56:25I think this looks like a cool feature.
00:56:27It feels original.
00:56:28The colors that you have, like the paper that you have here,
00:56:31works really well with the wood tones.
00:56:33These are the original chairs?
00:56:34Yeah.
00:56:35Ooh.
00:56:36Boy, that's not the original fabric, right?
00:56:38I learned how to reupholster.
00:56:39Well done.
00:56:40And also reusing the lamp.
00:56:42I think it's adorable.
00:56:43There's a way to repurpose and reuse that actually makes it feel cool in the space.
00:56:48Where you would hang up wardrobe, there was literally no storage in here.
00:56:51So we had to create storage in here.
00:56:53That looks like a ton of storage.
00:56:54Yeah.
00:56:55Talk about custom.
00:56:56Custom wardrobe.
00:56:57Floor to ceiling.
00:56:58Floor to ceiling.
00:56:59I love that tons of storage.
00:57:00On top of that, this is just a cool historic shelf.
00:57:04It almost creates like a third room here.
00:57:06Because it is separated from the main area.
00:57:08So this does have more of a bar feel.
00:57:10If it was just over there, it would just feel like maybe some storage.
00:57:13The one thing I would say, though, is I'm not a fan of the wood on wood on wood.
00:57:17It's too much.
00:57:18But I would say that this bathroom is stunning, though.
00:57:21That tile is gorgeous.
00:57:23I like that you mixed it up a little bit from what you had next door.
00:57:27And even the faucet, I like that with this color tone in here.
00:57:30I think it looks great.
00:57:31You guys did swap the plumbing over?
00:57:33Yeah.
00:57:34That's one of my favorite things in a shower is when you don't have to be under the shower to turn it on.
00:57:38Yeah.
00:57:39There's just like a simple classiness to this bathroom.
00:57:41This is not only night and day different and better from what it was before.
00:57:45Like Jonathan Night Day and different?
00:57:47It's a beautiful space.
00:57:49We have some work to do because this is comparing apples to oranges.
00:57:51Oh, man.
00:57:52So great job.
00:57:53Thanks for your time.
00:57:54And we will see you shortly.
00:57:55All right, guys.
00:57:56See you in a bit.
00:57:57All right.
00:57:58OK.
00:57:59The apples to oranges comment, I don't know what that means.
00:58:04I think both have a lot of pros.
00:58:06There are some choices I would have made differently, but they're both winners.
00:58:09I mean, I think either hotel owner is going to be blown away by what they're getting here.
00:58:14If you, Drew Scott, were going online, you're finding a hotel here, you book one,
00:58:19which of these rooms would you want to stay in?
00:58:22Hey, guys.
00:58:23Hey!
00:58:24Who's nervous?
00:58:25Tim.
00:58:26Yeah, you're not making things easy for us.
00:58:28Let's go.
00:58:31OK, sure.
00:58:32Yeah.
00:58:33I'm all nervous.
00:58:34I'm excited.
00:58:35OK, I can't wait.
00:58:36I'm all nervous.
00:58:37I can't wait.
00:58:38I can't wait.
00:58:42Here we go.
00:58:43Hey, guys.
00:58:44Hey!
00:58:45Who's nervous?
00:58:46Tim.
00:58:47Yeah.
00:58:48You're not making things easy for us.
00:58:49Oh, man.
00:58:50Mika's nervous.
00:58:51Yeah, Mika.
00:58:52Is she nervous?
00:58:53You guys must be exhausted because of the amount of work that you put in, but at the
00:58:58end of the day, it's worth it because you've really done something incredible with both
00:59:02of these spaces.
00:59:03Yeah.
00:59:04They are so different.
00:59:06When you walk into Team Brian's, it's so bright and it's so spacious.
00:59:11It feels way bigger because it is so bright.
00:59:15The woodwork, the yellow tones, the natural wood tones, it just draws you into the space.
00:59:19It makes the single look bigger.
00:59:21I like your built-in desk that you have.
00:59:23Looking at your double, a lot of the millwork is awesome.
00:59:26Your scalp detail is beautiful.
00:59:28We know Brian is obsessed with lights.
00:59:30You did some great lighting details.
00:59:31Thank you for hanging this before I came over here today.
00:59:34You're also thinking of function when somebody's having to clean the space.
00:59:37Under the beds, I think, was the best part.
00:59:39Taking that all the way down, it's like that room is literally ready for hospitality.
00:59:44Even your closet space, to create some function like you did that wasn't there before, great.
00:59:50There were some misses.
00:59:51I feel like that tile in the double, it didn't make sense to me.
00:59:55It didn't feel like this area or that specific property.
00:59:59Didn't get the Tulum thing, especially in the single.
01:00:01I saw it more when we went to the double and I got what you were saying.
01:00:05Over to this side.
01:00:06Yeah.
01:00:07Mika, you are dark and moody.
01:00:09At first, I was worried that it felt too dark because that can make a space feel small,
01:00:14but when you walk in immediately, your eyes caught by all these different textures and
01:00:18patterns and it is dark and moody, then it just sort of washed over me.
01:00:22These vibes were really sophisticated and interesting and I wanted to spend more time
01:00:26in that space.
01:00:27It was almost like it was transporting us back into when this space was first created.
01:00:31Awesome.
01:00:32The wallpaper was amazing.
01:00:33The wood detail, the paneling, everything was done the right amount and it was gorgeous.
01:00:37Something that really stood out to us was the fact that you repurposed so many things
01:00:40from the original room, from the headboard detail, the lamps, the reupholstered chairs.
01:00:45I think the returning customers are going to remember that stuff and recognize it and
01:00:50appreciate it, but the new customers as well will see the beauty and the value in it.
01:00:54That was pretty great.
01:00:55The tough thing with your single is that you had no storage.
01:00:58No closet and no desk at all.
01:01:01The closet that you put in for the double, awesome.
01:01:04You even found a way to incorporate a bar, which is like a whole other room, which is
01:01:07pretty cool, but it was wood on wood on wood, so it's too much.
01:01:10Yeah.
01:01:11What we were trying to look at too is you spent more money, so we're trying to see where
01:01:14that is.
01:01:15The tiny, tiny bathrooms that you were working with and how unfunctional they were to try
01:01:18and open things up to make them more inviting, I understand where the additional money went.
01:01:22When we tally everything up, remember, it's a tally of the hotel owner's preferences,
01:01:27the amenities.
01:01:28Looking at the guest experience and also looking at the aesthetic and design.
01:01:31When we tallied it all up, we did come to a clear winner.
01:01:35So the winner of the single and double room is Team ...
01:01:53The winner of the single and double room is Team Mika.
01:02:03Come on.
01:02:04Come on.
01:02:05Y'all got it.
01:02:06Okay.
01:02:07I did not expect that, you guys.
01:02:08Okay.
01:02:09Okay.
01:02:10Okay.
01:02:11Okay.
01:02:12Okay.
01:02:13Okay.
01:02:14Okay.
01:02:15Okay.
01:02:16Okay.
01:02:17Okay.
01:02:18Okay.
01:02:19Okay.
01:02:20Okay.
01:02:21Okay.
01:02:22So you guys have $5,000 towards the charity of your choice, which is?
01:02:26Cape Ann Animal Aid in our area.
01:02:28It's an animal rescue.
01:02:29Amazing.
01:02:30All right.
01:02:31I'm going to be super excited.
01:02:32$5,000 will go a long way.
01:02:33I love that.
01:02:34Congrats, guys.
01:02:35That's awesome, you guys.
01:02:36And this is just the start.
01:02:37There's a lot more competition ahead.
01:02:38There's a lot more that's going to go to charity.
01:02:39And there's also going to be one winner among the two of you.
01:02:42And that ultimate winner will also be determined by who increases the room rates the most.
01:02:47It's a business after all, right?
01:02:48It is a business.
01:02:49Absolutely.
01:02:50You're right.
01:02:51I feel like the single and double room is kind of the template for the rest of the space.
01:02:54So if we would have got that wrong, we would have been in trouble.
01:02:56So does that mean we're in trouble?
01:02:57You might be.
01:02:58Oh, no.
01:02:59All right.
01:03:00This is a marathon.
01:03:01I mean, they won this sprint, but I have a game plan for my hotel that I'll be standing
01:03:07in the winner's circle at the end.
01:03:08I see it.
01:03:09This season on 100 Day Hotel Challenge.
01:03:17This is going to be an epic showdown.
01:03:19May the best team win.
01:03:21I hate to play dirty, but whatever it takes to win.
01:03:24Oh, my gosh.
01:03:25What?
01:03:26Let's do it.
01:03:27Oh.
01:03:28Whoa.
01:03:29This is the key moment.
01:03:30What could go wrong?
01:03:31Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:03:32Wow.
01:03:33Is that a good wow?
01:03:34No.
01:03:35I don't think this is going to fit.
01:03:36Mika.
01:03:37Let me ask you a question.
01:03:38Do you ever consider therapy?
01:03:39Three, two, one.
01:03:40Oh, my God.
01:03:41The sun is setting on day 100.
01:03:42And we're going to go to bed.
01:03:43The sun is setting on day 100.
01:03:44And we still don't have a sign.
01:03:45I wake up, I can fix that.
01:03:46I'll just stand out like this.
01:03:47Welcome.
01:03:48Welcome.
01:03:49I feel like he's trying to tap some tricks.
01:03:50I'm going to find out where our appliances are.
01:03:51Uh-oh.
01:03:52We're stuck somewhere.
01:03:53Something's wrong.
01:03:54Looks like something chewed through it, like little mice holes.
01:03:55I do Rinos, not Ronins, honey.
01:03:56Have you guys heard any rumors about how judgey we are?
01:03:57I see my biggest defeat.
01:03:58I see my biggest defeat.
01:03:59I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:00I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:01I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:02I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:03I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:04I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:05I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:06I see my biggest defeat.
01:04:07It's two Rinnos, not rodents, honey.
01:04:08Have you guys heard any rumors about how judgy we are?
01:04:11Ah!
01:04:12I see my biggest pet peeve in a small space.
01:04:14Don't tell people how to use a space.
01:04:16You got to just give them the options.
01:04:17The winner of the 100-day hotel challenge is.
01:04:22After all this is said and done,
01:04:23I might need a break from working with you.
01:04:25Not going to lie.
