00:00Hey friends, welcome back to the channel.
00:21So if you are in the market for a Kindle, then we actually have four different options
00:25to choose from these days.
00:26We have the standard Kindles, we have the Kindle Paperwhite, we have the Kindle Paperwhite
00:30Signature and the slightly old school Kindle Oasis.
00:33We're going to be breaking down the pros and cons of each of these four different types
00:37of Kindle.
00:38And as usual, to save you time, there's going to be timestamps in the video description.
00:41And the upfront conclusion is that for most people, I would recommend the normal Kindle
00:44Paperwhite Edition.
00:46If you're on a very tight budget, then the standard cheap Kindle is pretty reasonable,
00:49although it does have a few inconveniences.
00:51And if you have extra money to burn, then the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition is
00:54pretty good.
00:55It's something I use personally, and there's basically no reason at all to get a Kindle
00:58Oasis.
00:59If that's what you wanted, then thank you for watching and have a great day.
01:01But if you want to learn more in this video, we're going to start by breaking down exactly
01:04why I think everyone should have a Kindle and why it's my favourite tech purchase of
01:07all time.
01:08And then for each of these four different types of Kindle, we are going to be breaking
01:10down the pros and cons and I'm going to be doing like a mini review of each one and sharing
01:13my thoughts and will ultimately land on why I personally use the Kindle Paperwhite Signature
01:17Edition.
01:18So let's start with part one.
01:19Why do I like the Kindle so much?
01:20The Kindle, as I've often said, is my single favourite tech purchase of all time.
01:24Kindle number one and AirPods number two.
01:26Those are two life-changing pieces of tech.
01:29The reason Kindle is life-changing is kind of threefold.
01:31Number one, it makes it super, super, super easy to read books.
01:34It takes all of the friction out of reading.
01:36I carry a Kindle with me wherever I go.
01:38I always have one in my bag and I always have a second one, being honest, on my bedside
01:41table because it just ensures that I'm able to read just before bed.
01:44Secondly, having a Kindle makes it super easy to buy books.
01:47Anytime someone recommends me a book, I will just immediately buy it on Kindle.
01:50It costs a few pounds.
01:51It's often cheaper than buying the physical book and it means I can access it immediately.
01:54And finally, having a Kindle makes it super easy to highlight books as well.
01:57So if you're interested in reading non-fiction, like a lot of what I read, then highlighting
02:00and taking notes on it is kind of a useful thing to do and a Kindle makes it super, super
02:03easy.
02:04So overall, yeah, the single one tech purchase that I think is absolutely life-changing for
02:07everyone that I think is an absolute no-brainer.
02:09So after all that preaching, let's talk about the normal Kindles.
02:11Now the cool thing about these is that it comes in white and black as well.
02:15The annoying thing about the other ones is that they don't come in white.
02:18I would have loved to see this, the Kindle Paperwhite or the Paperwhite Signature in
02:21a white colour.
02:22I would definitely bought that one because I prefer white colours.
02:24But basically you've got a choice of two for the normal Kindle and the normal Kindle cocks
02:27in at around 49 pounds or $49 and they often have sales to make it even cheaper than that.
02:31So this is by far the best value for money Kindle on the market.
02:35And as with all the Kindles, the reading experience is very good.
02:37There's no buttons on it other than the on button and you just touch the screen if you
02:40want to go forward or back any pages in your book.
02:43And it genuinely does sort of look like you're reading on paper.
02:45You've got these e-ink screens that don't feel like you're reading from a screen.
02:49And for 49 pounds or $49, however much this is, this is actually like really, really,
02:54really good.
02:55Like even if you're a student on a tight budget, like, you know, four meals out with friends
02:59would cost you around about 50 pounds, depending on where you go.
03:02And for the price tag of 49 pounds, if you're on a budget, this is genuinely really, really
03:05good.
03:06Like the amount of ROI, return on investment you get from having a Kindle, which then unlocks
03:09the ability to read more books more frictionlessly is such a no brainer.
03:14Even when you're a student, you know, four or five takeaways is worth about 50 quid.
03:18So if you don't have those four or five takeaways, suddenly you get a Kindle, your life will
03:21be completely magically transformed, I can guarantee it.
03:24But the standard Kindle editions do have a few inconveniences, which make them not my
03:28top recommendation.
03:29My top recommendation, like I said, is the Kindle Paperwhite.
03:32So what are those?
03:33Firstly, they charge with micro USB, like USB 2, rather than USB-C.
03:38This is a bit of a nightmare because I don't have any other devices that charge with basic
03:41box standard micro USB.
03:43And so actually finding a cable to charge these is a non-trivial thing.
03:47And actually when I used to use the Kindle Oasis, which also really annoyingly has micro
03:50USB rather than USB-C, it would often like run out of battery, well, it wouldn't often
03:54run out of battery.
03:55It would run out of battery like every now and then, and I'd be like, ah, I really cannot
03:58find a cable to charge this.
03:59And it would mean that I wouldn't be able to get to sleep one night because I often read
04:02the Kindle before going to bed.
04:03And it really like negatively impacted my quality of life.
04:05The other annoying thing about the normal Kindle is that the resolution is about half
04:09of what it is on the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Oasis.
04:12So the more expensive Kindles have a resolution of 300 pixels per inch, whereas these normal
04:16Kindles have a resolution of 167 pixels per inch.
04:19If you're used to reading a normal Kindle, you probably won't notice this, but it's like
04:23if you're used to reading on a Kindle Paperwhite and high resolution screens, you can sort
04:26of more easily see the pixels.
04:28And it's just a little bit less of a nice reading experience if you compare them side
04:32by side.
04:33Although of course, if all you've seen is the budget Kindle, you're going to be completely
04:36satisfied with it.
04:37In terms of design, the screen size is very slightly smaller than the Kindle Paperwhite.
04:41This is not a huge deal.
04:42Like I find that this screen size completely fine as well.
04:45This one is also good.
04:46So screen size isn't a major factor for me.
04:47But the other annoying thing about these Kindles is that they don't have a warm light option.
04:51Now life is pretty good these days because all these Kindles do have a backlight.
04:54Whereas back in the day, the original Kindles of old never had a backlight.
04:57And so you'd have to like have the bedside lamp on while you're reading.
05:00Now they all have a light, but the standard ones only have a cool light, like a blue light,
05:04which apparently when you're trying to get to sleep at night is not very good because
05:07your eye responds to the blue light and it kind of keeps you awake because your eye thinks
05:10it's daytime.
05:11Something along those lines.
05:12The nice thing is that the Kindle Oasis and the Kindle Paperwhites do have a warm light.
05:16So you're getting yellow light rather than blue light.
05:19And theoretically that helps you sleep better at night.
05:21I've tried both.
05:23With my N equals one study, I haven't really noticed much of a difference in my ability
05:26to sleep with warm light versus cold light, but apparently the science says that warm
05:30light is better.
05:31So that's a big reason why the Kindle Paperwhite is my go-to rather than the normal Kindle.
05:35If you're on a budget and you can live with those drawbacks, then the normal Kindle is
05:37absolutely fantastic and you will absolutely, absolutely not regret buying it.
05:41And I can just a hundred percent recommend it with that reservation.
05:43All right, let's now talk about the Kindle Paperwhite.
05:46And as I said, this is the one that I recommend for most people.
05:48And this comes in at £104.
05:50The dollar price will be over here.
05:51And this is basically twice the price of the standard Kindle.
05:54So what features do you get for twice the price?
05:56Well, firstly, its design is slightly different.
05:58The screen is now flush with the, well, the device, whereas there is a bit of a, a sort
06:03of a ridge, a divot with like the normal Kindle.
06:06It's not a huge deal.
06:08It doesn't really make much difference to the reading experience, but the screen is
06:10very slightly bigger, which you might prefer.
06:11It does have a much better resolution.
06:13And that's one of my favourite things about it, that the text looks smoother than it does
06:16on the normal Kindle.
06:17And it has a warm light option, which means like me, if you were reading at nighttime
06:20in bed in the dark, then you don't need to worry about the blue light allegedly harming
06:23your eyes and stopping you from going to sleep.
06:24The light on this is slightly stronger as well, although I tend not to have it on maximum
06:28brightness because I read at the night time.
06:29And so I haven't really noticed much of a difference between the standard Kindle and
06:32the Paperwhite.
06:33But the other cool thing about the Paperwhite is that it is now waterproof.
06:35So that is one of the new features in the Kindle Paperwhite that wasn't there before,
06:38which is what justified the existence of the much more expensive Kindle Oasis.
06:42But now Paperwhite, Paperwhite Signature and Oasis are all waterproof.
06:45So that's nice if you want to read in the shower for whatever reason.
06:47So the question becomes, is it worth paying twice the price for the Kindle Paperwhite
06:51rather than the Kindle normal?
06:52I think it kind of depends on your budget.
06:54If you're on a tight budget where that £50 or $50 makes a large difference to your life,
06:58then don't worry about it.
06:59Just get the normal Kindle and you'll be completely fine with it.
07:02It's just a very slight inconvenience to have that annoying micro USB charger, but hey,
07:07it's not a huge deal.
07:08Whereas if your budget is such that that £50, $50 doesn't really make much of a difference
07:11to your life, then I think you will want to upgrade to the Kindle Paperwhite for the reasons
07:15of the warm light, the slightly bigger screen and the higher resolution.
07:17And the fact that apparently the battery for this is 40% like longer lasting than the battery
07:22for the standard Kindle, which kind of makes sense because this is smaller than this and
07:25battery size kind of depends on the size of the device.
07:27But to be honest, Kindles have such a long battery life anyway and you charge them like
07:31maybe every couple of weeks that it doesn't really make much of a difference to your day-to-day
07:34use.
07:35So that's the Kindle Paperwhite.
07:36Let's now talk about the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, which is basically exactly
07:40the same to the point where I literally cannot even tell the difference between the two devices
07:45other than by looking at like the serial number on the back being like, okay, this is the
07:48signature and this is the normal one.
07:49But Amazon is charging an extra £75 or like $90 or something for the Kindle Paperwhite
07:54Signature.
07:55So what do you get for that?
07:56Well, basically you only get three things.
07:57Number one, you get upgraded storage.
07:58So the normal Kindle Paperwhite has 8GB by default, whereas the Signature has 32GB by
08:03default.
08:04That is honestly not a huge deal, unless you read comic books or you listen to audiobooks
08:08on the Kindle, which is a bit weird because you can just listen to audiobooks on your
08:10phone.
08:11Like you're very unlikely to ever come close to the limitations of even 8GB.
08:14And so upgrading from 8GB to 32GB doesn't really make much of a difference, at least
08:17for me.
08:18Secondly, the Signature has an auto-adjusting front light.
08:20To be honest, I have never noticed this and only realised that was a thing when I looked
08:23at the specification list in preparing this video, having used both the normal Paperwhite
08:27and the Paperwhite Signature, because I just have never noticed that the light automatically
08:31adjusts because it's not a thing that you notice and it's not that hard manually adjusting
08:36the light if you need to.
08:38To be honest, I've only adjusted the light on the normal Paperwhite just once, which
08:40was the first time I got it, and now I've got it set to the level that I want when I'm
08:44reading in bed.
08:45And if I'm feeling a bit like, oh, I want the light to be a bit brighter, I'll just
08:48adjust the light manually.
08:49It's not very hard.
08:50But the third difference between the Paperwhite and the Paperwhite Signature, and the reason
08:53why I got the Signature, is because the Signature now has wireless charging.
08:57Yes, if you want, you can buy the extra wireless charging device for the Kindle, which is actually
09:02weirdly not made by Amazon, but made by Anker, but this is apparently like a somewhat first
09:06party wireless charger.
09:07I can't remember how much this was, I think it was like £30 or £40, we'll put the price
09:10down here.
09:11And the cool thing about this is you plug it into a wall and then your Kindle Paperwhite
09:14Signature can charge wirelessly.
09:17This is actually kind of useful for me because I always forget to charge my Kindle and there's
09:20been a few days in my life over the last year where the Kindle has run out of battery
09:24and I've thought, oh, I wish the Kindle hadn't run out of battery.
09:27The nice thing about the wireless charger means is that in the morning I can just stick
09:30the Kindle on the wireless charger and I know my Kindle is never ever going to run out of
09:33battery because now it's on the wireless charger and that's its home on my bedside table.
09:37Plus it's just kind of nice to have a wireless charger and it makes the bedside table look
09:40good.
09:41So for that reason, I was personally happy to pay an extra £75 for the Kindle Paperwhite
09:45Signature and an extra like £30, £40 for the wireless charger, just kind of for that
09:49very mild convenience and very mild aesthetic preference.
09:52This is why I'd probably only recommend the Signature if you're in that position where
09:55you're a massive tech nerd and you don't really care about how much money you spend on tech
09:58because you can call it business expense or something like that.
10:01Because like, to be honest, spending an extra twice as much just for the benefit of wireless
10:04charging probably isn't really worth it, especially considering the Paperwhites charge with USB-C
10:09and we all have USB-C cables lying around absolutely everywhere these days.
10:12So you can always very easily charge it with your laptop charger or your phone charger
10:15or whatever.
10:16But yeah, for that reason, I have a wireless charger on my bedstand and I have the Kindle
10:19Paperwhite Signature, but that is not a recommendation that I would give for most people.
10:23My recommendation is still, for most people, the normal Kindle Paperwhite is the way forward
10:27unless you're on a budget, in which case the standard Kindle will completely do.
10:30So these are the new Kindles, the normal ones, the Paperwhite and the Paperwhite Signature,
10:34but there is the old Kindle Oasis.
10:36It's a bit of a different design.
10:38You can get it in different colours.
10:39I think this is like the gold one.
10:41This is quite expensive.
10:42I think it's about £230.
10:43We'll put the prices down here.
10:45And this used to be a reasonable option because it had a warm light and it was waterproof.
10:49But now, the standard Kindle Paperwhite also has a warm light and is also waterproof.
10:53So unless you really, really vibe with the physical design of the Oasis and the physical
10:57buttons, it's not really something that I would recommend.
11:00Personally, I used this for about a year and I actually genuinely prefer the Paperwhite.
11:04I don't really like the design of this.
11:06It's not like easier to hold or easier to read.
11:08I guess, you know, you can kind of hold it like this where, you know, your thumb isn't
11:12really covering the device.
11:14But to be honest, you figure out like it's not that hard holding one of these devices.
11:18So basically, I would really say that there's no reason at all to get one of these old
11:23Kindle Oasis.
11:24Oasis.
11:25Oasis is.
11:26Oasis is.
11:27Whatever.
11:28Maybe that will change when Amazon upgrades these.
11:29But I can't imagine the Kindle Paperwhite being anything other than the recommendation
11:31for most people.
11:32Oh, and the other really annoying thing about the Oasis is that it's all micro USB.
11:35It's not even USB-C. So it's actually genuinely hard to charge the Kindle Oasis.
11:38So basically, there's no need to get one of these.
11:40I'm not going to throw it because I want to give it to one of my team members or one of
11:42my friends because it's still a Kindle at the end of the day and it was like £230.
11:45But yeah, basically, we can throw this in the trash because it's a bit pointless.
11:48Now at this point, you might be wondering what the hell I'm doing with all these five
11:51different Kindles.
11:52I'm going to keep two of them for myself, but these three, I'm going to be giving away
11:55to various team members because now I've got a team of people that helps me out on this
11:58YouTube channel and all the various courses and stuff that we do as a business.
12:01And in fact, completely coincidentally, one of the tools that really helps us work together
12:05as a team, as a business, is an app called Loom, who are very kindly sponsoring this
12:08video.
12:09To be honest, you've probably heard of Loom already.
12:10It's a fantastic screen recording app that works across all platforms, mobile platforms,
12:15desktop platforms, Mac, Windows, the whole shebang.
12:17And it's by far the easiest way I've ever found to record screencasts.
12:20So we use those for team members, for documentation, for onboarding, for me showing someone how
12:25I do something on the computer so that they can then do the thing and I can delegate it
12:27to them.
12:28We also use Loom a lot for a part-time YouTuber academy.
12:30So we use it to show students how to do stuff in editing software, how to use our various
12:34courses platform.
12:35And we also use it to give feedback on their videos.
12:37And the cool thing about that is that you can literally just open a Loom recording,
12:39watch someone's video and directly talk the feedback as you're going through.
12:43And in fact, I've started using Loom to give video feedback to some of our editors on these
12:46videos as well, rather than having to type things out on like a Google doc, for example.
12:50Loom is used by over 14 million people from all around the world.
12:53And because Loom have partnered with us on this video, if you go to loom.com forward
12:56slash Ali, or you hit the link in the video description, that'll give you a free 14 day
13:00trial to the Loom business plan.
13:02That's a plan that we pay for as a team and that we have been for the last year or so.
13:05And it gives you unlimited creator seats, unlimited videos, unlimited recording length.
13:09And it even lets you get rid of your filter words like ums and ahs and that annoying stuff
13:13with a single click.
13:14Thank you Loom for sponsoring the video and for being a tool that we've been using for
13:16over a year now.
13:17And if you enjoyed this video, you might like to check out this video over here, which talks
13:20about my tips for how I read lots and lots of books, of which getting a Kindle is just
13:23one of them, but there's eight or nine different tips in that video that might really help.
13:26So thank you so much for watching.
13:27Do hit the subscribe button if you aren't already, and I'll see you hopefully in the
13:30next video.
13:31Bye bye.
