Part 1 of 6 of the evocative TV drama from 1983. The unlikely friendship between Johnny Jarvis and Alan Lipton begins in their last year at a comprehensive in Hackney: Jarvis, the loveable clown with a surprising talent for welding, and Lipton, the apparently talentless reject, fantasising about the future and the father he has never met. At the end of the year, they have to confront the adult world.

Another old drama from 1983, this I managed to save from Mick's Nostalgia Channel when it was on Youtube last year. The 1980's have always fascinated me, and it certainly evokes an era here. I am uploading this because it is old, and also to see how long this remains up, but I won't be doing this regularly like I used to. These are only uploaded for people to enjoy or who remember stuff like this. And when they don't release certain shows that are only available on old video tapes (I'm thinking of my recently removed Heart of the Country from 1987) how are people supposed to see classics from years ago otherwise? Anyway, enjoy.

01:27That was the last time I saw Johnny Jarvis.
01:29A few years earlier, he'd been exactly the sort of kid I'd always wanted to be.
01:35In our last year at school, he looked as if he could do anything he wanted.
01:38Well, almost anything.

02:48People did laugh at me, quite a lot.
02:49Stop running.
02:50They laughed with Jonny.
02:51At the beginning of that year, I can remember thinking that something was worrying me.
03:02At the beginning of that year, I can remember thinking that something was worrying him.
03:09Jarvis!
03:11Now, these houses here, to buy one of these would cost you about £250, £300 a month.
03:17And to get a company to advance you a loan on one,
03:20you'd need to be earning about £10,000 a year.
03:24Now, how many of you think you could earn £10,000 a year?
03:27Jarvis?
03:29Sorry I'm late, sir.
03:30Could you earn £10,000 a year, Jarvis?
03:33Yes, sir.
03:34How do you think you'd do that, then?
03:36Work overtime, sir.
03:45It's three o'clock in the morning at Gatwick Airport.
03:48Freddie Laker must be a proud man.
03:50After a six-year battle...

04:03Mr Mason said we had to be prepared.
04:06For what?
04:08For after we leave.
04:09For what lies ahead.
04:11When the troubles begin.
04:12No, I'm going to be prepared, though, Dad.
04:16What are you going to do, then?
04:18You'll see.
04:20You should make more friends, Johnny.
04:24Who needs friends?
04:26We all need friends.
04:29It's going to be a great year, Mum.
04:32Don't do anything stupid, will you?
04:35Is your tea ready?
05:00Thanks very much.
05:07What do you want?
05:08Air cap.
05:10I didn't see that.

05:38completely and utterly and totally all off.
05:40I'll have a number one.

05:45Want to be like your mates, do you?
05:47No, I ain't got any mates.

07:19Look at this.
07:20Well, look.
07:21Looks like a baby's arsehole, doesn't it?
07:23Did you get that, Jarvis?
07:24What do you think?
07:25Oh, well, well, well.
07:26Look who's hard, eh?

07:56I'm a skinhead.
07:57Well, well, ain't that nice?
07:59My name's Jarvis.
08:00And my name is Stapleton.
08:01I'm going to be a welder.
08:03Well, well, well.

08:44Come on.
08:45Because you're a joke, Sophies.
08:46Some of you.
08:47All right, folks.
08:48All right.
08:49And that is safety.
08:50Look, I'm a skinhead myself.
08:51So?
08:52So I'm hard.
08:55Look, I can't share a bench with you anymore.
08:57Be aware of your goggles.
08:58Please.
08:59On the lathe.
09:00We live in the same place, don't we?
09:01On the mill.
09:02Look, it's embarrassing.
09:03I'm a welder.
09:04We live in the same place.
09:05All right.
09:06If you're so hard, why don't you use them, eh?
09:08Because I'm harder than them.
09:09That's why.
09:10Yeah.
09:11Yeah.
09:12I'm the hardest thing in the room.
09:14Yeah.
09:15Yeah.

09:21You will wear your goggles.
09:23All right, you can share.
09:25Just watch it, all right?
09:30Will you stop following me, Sophies?
09:32Lipton.
09:33Lipton, then.
09:34Whoever you are, stop following me.
09:37I've got enough problems.
09:39That's disinherited me.
09:41I mean, nobody likes skinheads, right?
09:43I mean, surely my old man doesn't.
09:45Why am I talking to you like this?
09:47Because you like me.
09:48Well, what gives you that idea?
09:49Somebody has to like me.
09:50Who says?
09:51They just don't.
09:53So why does it have to be me, eh?
09:55Because I've tried everyone else in the school.
09:57That's why.
09:59It will be dangerous to be seen with me, Lipton.
10:03Yeah?
10:08Look, stop following me.
10:10You might get hurt.
10:16You're like my new friend.
10:18You're so old.
10:19You're terrifying.
10:20I'm going down the safe ways.
10:22I'm going to find mummy.
10:24The safe ways.
10:26Oh, shut up.
10:27It could be you're from the store,
10:29and a little bit more and you're winning.
10:32I'll use this on you.
10:33I'll give it a rest, Jarvis.
10:34You can brush your teeth with that.
10:36No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
10:38I'll be back, Jarvis.
10:39Sir, give up, sir.
10:40Give up, sir.
10:41Sir, sir.
10:43Jarvis.
10:45That's all.
10:48What in Gosling do you think you're doing?
10:50Oh, please, sir.
10:51I think I've brought him in late.
10:53If I catch you doing anything like that again, young man,
10:55you'll be out of here, sharpish.
10:56The odd man.
10:57And that goes for you too, Manning.
11:01Sir.
11:06What's the matter with you, Jarvis?
11:07Nothing.
11:08There is?
11:09There isn't.
11:13I don't mean that bad.
11:14Oh, shut up.
11:17I don't know why you're carrying those books around with you.
11:21I'm taking O-levels.
11:22You're doing no such thing.
11:24I am. I'm taking eight O-levels, actually.
11:26Yeah? Where to?
11:29Look, I'm just really fed up with it.
11:31What?
11:32All of it.
11:35Don't let them get you down.
11:36Who?
11:37You know, them.
11:39Look, I've told you, I'm not one of them,
11:41and I won't be seen dead with one of them, right?
11:43Right.
11:44That's why you fed up me.
11:46You, Lipton, that's why.
11:48You got this year off to a really bad start,
11:50following me around with your books you can't even understand.
11:53Don't look for me round school no more, because you won't find me.
11:55I've had school, OK? I'm off.
11:57I'll be good.
11:58Right, so I'll stop.
12:00I'll be good.
12:01You go one stop on the road, do you?
12:03I don't want you following me around.
12:06See you, John.
12:08I mean it.
12:14We are the champions
12:17It wasn't just Johnny I wanted,
12:19it was his family too,
12:21especially his dad.
12:23Johnny's dad was a commissioner,
12:26a steady sort of dad,
12:28who could tell you off,
12:29but nice with it.
12:32We are the champions
12:35It's half eight, Johnny.
12:36Yeah.
12:37Aren't we late?
12:39Yeah.
12:40Well, that's so I didn't warn you.
12:42Yeah.
12:45Well, come on.
12:46I'm going on the bus.
12:48Yeah?
12:50Are you OK?
12:53Yeah, I'm OK.
12:56OK, then.
13:00OK.
13:02You brought me fame and fortune and everything I know
13:06I thank you all
13:36What happened to your friend Jarvis Lipton?
13:39He's off school, sir.
13:41Yeah, two weeks he's been off, sir.
13:43Yes.
13:44He's at home. He just sits there.
13:48Is this a medley of cut-out Lipton?
13:50Yes, sir.
13:52You're not very good with your hands, are you?
13:54No, sir.
13:55I'm not very good with my brain either, sir.
13:59Look, you tell your friend Jarvis to turn up at the start of the term,
14:03otherwise he won't finish his course.
14:05No way.
14:06Yes, sir. I'll tell him, sir.
14:08Good.
14:09Because, amazing as it may seem,
14:12your friend Jarvis is not unskillful.
14:15In fact, he's rather good.
14:17In fact, he's very, very good.
14:20Yes, sir.
14:22Sir, what do you think I should do with this?
14:25I should try and hide it if I were you, Lipton.
14:28Yes, sir.
14:29You tell him. After all, it's his life.
14:33Yes, sir.
14:37Jarvis!
14:40Jarvis, it's me, Lipton.
14:44You coming back to school this afternoon, Jarvis?
14:49Katherine reckons you're a genius, you know.
14:55It's your life, Jarvis.
14:57My life.
15:11He didn't show up the rest of that term.
15:13When he wasn't there for school after Christmas,
15:16I decided to do something apparently.
15:18You're useless, Manny.
15:20What?
15:21Useless.
15:22Oh, don't bother.
15:23You think you're hard, don't you, cos you give my mate a hard time.
15:26You know Manny, Jarvis is my mate.
15:28Bollocks.
15:29You're ruining his life.
15:30Look, don't be stupid, right?
15:32I'm coming looking for you, Manny.
15:34Oh, yeah?
15:36I'm going to do Manny.
15:38Look, you couldn't do a bunny rabbit, Lipton.
15:41What are you doing, my arse?
15:43Nobody messes my mate about.
15:46Wednesday night, nine o'clock...
15:48Move, move, move!
15:49All right!
15:50Wednesday night, nine o'clock, cemetery, by the church.
15:53I'll be there.
15:54Good.
15:55Yeah.
15:56Can you make it eight?
15:57My mum likes me in by nine.
16:00Kick him!
16:01Kick him!
16:02Help him!
16:20I've heard a bloke rave from school about you today.
16:25What, you got a tongue?
16:27What is it, eh?
16:29Nothing.
16:30It can't be nothing, can it?
16:33Don't fancy it.
16:35Fancy what?
16:36Screw any of it.
16:38It's not a question of what you fancy, is it?
16:41You're going to be out on the streets in a few months,
16:43and what you want is some qualifications,
16:45cos they're not giving jobs away today.
16:47Well, hadn't you noticed, eh?
16:49Eh?
16:50I just don't fancy it!
16:56SHE SIGHS
17:12More chips, lovey?
17:16Time.
17:17Ketchup, lovey?
17:18Time.
17:19More peas, lovey?
17:22You want more peas, lovey?
17:25Don't call me lovey, Mum.
17:27Why ever not, angel?
17:29Cos I don't like it.
17:31What do I call you, lovey, if I don't call you lovey?
17:34I don't care much, Mum.
17:39What do your friends call you?
17:41Lipton.
17:42I can't call you Lipton.
17:44That's your name.
17:46I know it is, stupid.
17:49Just call me Alan.
17:51All right, lovey.
17:52I'm going out.
17:54Where to?
17:55Just out.
17:56Where?
17:57I'll be back before you go to work.
17:58Dad...
17:59Oh, leave off, can't you?
18:05I'm sorry, Mum.
18:07It's all right.
18:09I don't mean to.
18:11You're all I've got.
18:13Right.
18:15I'll see you.
18:17Bye.
18:23Quite frankly, my thoughts weren't really on Johnny Jarvis
18:26as I made my way down the cemetery that evening.
18:29If I was thinking about anything, it was,
18:32should I have made a will?
18:34And how did you go on about doing it?
18:37And then, pretty soon,
18:40I stopped thinking about anything, really.
18:48Where's this mate of yours, then, eh?
18:50He's busy.
18:52What are we supposed to have done to him, then, eh?
18:54Psychological.
18:55It was psychological, what you'd done to Jarvis.
18:59Don't bother, OK?
19:01Chicken?
19:03What's the point?
19:04Let's get started.
19:08No.
19:09Let's get started!
19:12No.
19:13Let's get started!
19:35Enough.
19:37By no means.
19:42Enough.
19:43No.
19:47Enough, right?
19:57Look, what is it with you and this Jarvis, eh?
20:00What's with this Jarvis of yours?
20:02I don't like what you've done to him.
20:06Go on.
20:08Now I've done it to the both of you, right?
20:12Good.
20:22Come on.
20:23This ain't a lot of fun.
20:30When you tell Jarvis
20:32when you tell Jarvis
20:34there's more where that come from, right?!
21:03What are you, a bus?
21:05No, money.
21:07Money?
21:08Yeah, money.
21:11You don't know how to look at a state?
21:13Yeah.
21:14I'll sort him out.
21:15Oh, don't be stupid, Jarvis.
21:17You don't know where he is and you couldn't sort out a bus ticket.
21:21Listen, squirt...
21:22Oh, don't you start.
21:23I've had that lot jumping up and down on me for the last ten minutes.
21:26I don't need you at all.
21:28Christ, you're all the same, you skinheads.
21:30Look, I've told you, I'm not a skinhead.
21:32No? Well, what's that doing then?
21:34It's growing.
21:35Well, it ain't growing fast enough for me, all right?
21:39Lipton!
21:42I'll see you around.
21:44Lipton!
21:48Lipton!
21:50Lipton!
21:59All right, Jarvis?
22:00How you going, all right?
22:01Come back if you are.
22:02That's it.
22:03Do your track a little, Jarvis.
22:04All right, all right.
22:05Well, do you where you've been then?
22:06Busy.
22:08Hello.
22:10Hello.
22:12Want to come round my house?
22:14OK.
22:16Can only make Wednesday.
22:18Why?
22:19Who's working you over the rest of the week?
22:26Now, say we were an apprentice, right?
22:28Say we were apprentices.
22:30Electricians or something.
22:32Now, with the common market, you can just go.
22:35You just turn up with your passport, and there you are.
22:38Travel, you see.
22:40Well, take Aachen, Germany.
22:42Bomb down the motorway here, double back here, and you're in Stuttgart.
22:45Then you're right for the Alps.
22:47Christ, imagine the Alps, Carter.
22:49Phenomenal.
22:51And then on the other side of the Alps, you've got Italy, which is even better.
22:54Why?
22:55Hot. Wine.
22:57Oh, I see.
22:58You see, you've got to make something of yourself, Jarvis.
23:01That's the thing.
23:02Yeah.
23:03Yeah, you've got to work and work and make something of yourself.
23:06Yeah.
23:07You more manager or what?
23:09I admire you, Jarvis.
23:11Yeah?
23:12Why's that, then?
23:14I don't know.
23:18What are all these books?
23:20Oh, maths, physics, geology, history.
23:24Where did you get them?
23:25I borrowed them.
23:27From the library.
23:28And what do you do with them?
23:30Put them on the shelves.
23:32I'm going to read them.
23:34You're mad.
23:37So tell me, why'd you hit Manning?
23:40He was bothering me.
23:42Yeah?
23:43You've got to work and work and make something of yourself, Jarvis.
23:47If you say so, boss.
23:51Tea, lovey?
23:52Please!
23:53Oh, sorry, lovey. He hates that.
23:56Two teas, precious?
23:57Two teas, Alan!
24:02Who's that?
24:03Oh, it's my dad.
24:06He was killed in the war. Second World War.
24:09He was a parachutist. I never knew him.
24:14Lipton?
24:19When was you born?
24:201961.
24:22And when was the Second World War, Lipton?
24:25Oh, leave off.
24:27No, is it? Is it really your dad? Really?
24:29No, I bought it in a shop.
24:36Who's your old man in Manning?
24:38Alan.
24:40Who with?
24:41My old lady.
24:42Get away.
24:43Well, she ain't my old lady, really.
24:46In fact, she's a coloured person.
24:48Imagine that, eh? My old man shakes up with one of them.
24:52Surprising.
24:53What do they do together?
24:55They drink.
24:57You know who pisses me off?
24:59Who?
25:00Lipton and Turner. They really piss me off.
25:03Yeah?
25:04Yeah.
25:05And someone who really pisses me off...
25:07Who's that, then?
25:08Jarvis.
25:09He's a nutter.
25:10No, he's worse than a nutcase.
25:12He's popular.
25:15Yes.
25:17You could plunge the surface there, you see.
25:20Yeah, yeah, you could.
25:22What's he here for?
25:23Oh, he likes to watch.
25:25Well, fair enough.
25:28Yes.
25:29You've done a lot of work on this.
25:31And in your own time, too.
25:33I think it's going to be very nice.
25:35Can I take it home again?
25:36Surely.
25:37I think it's a good design.
25:39I opt.
25:40You were the smudge, were you?
25:43Look, I'll get some more paper from my cupboard.
25:46You carry on. I'm not going out for lunch yet.
25:48Fair enough.
26:00What are you going to do with your living, Jarvis?
26:02Make ashtrays?
26:04Out!
26:09Out!
26:25Oi!
26:26What on earth do you think you're doing?
26:28Nothing.
26:29And what do you mean by that?
26:31Nothing.
26:32What's your name?
26:33Manning.
26:34Sir?
26:35Sir.
26:36I remember you.
26:37Do you?
26:38I do.
26:40Well, never mind.
26:41In two weeks' time, there'll only be one term left.
26:44Not surprised you bother to stay, really.
26:47So am I, mate.
26:48So am I.
26:52Oi!
26:53Oi!
27:21Oi!
27:23Yeah?
27:24How's your sister?
27:26Eh?
27:27Or is it your cousin?
27:29What do you want about her?
27:31Come here.
27:32What do you want?
27:33Over here!
27:42It's gone on long enough.
27:44What has?
27:45You have.
27:46What do you want about her?
27:47Your sister.
27:48Or is it your cousin?
27:49Look, Manning, I don't know what you...
27:51I don't know what I'm on about, you cheeky black bastard.
27:57Take it out!
28:09Get back!
28:10Get back!
28:12You?
28:13Yeah, me.
28:14He just went into me, sir.
28:15Shut up!
28:16He just started in on me.
28:17Did you, Manning?
28:18So what if I did?
28:19Why?
28:20Come with me.
28:21No way!
28:22Come here!
28:23Piss off!
28:24Manning!
28:25So long, you stupid sod!
28:26This is my last appearance!
28:27Manning!
28:30Why?
28:31I don't know, sir.
28:32I don't know.
28:45Can you ever take it off?
28:47I'm proud of this uniform.
28:49They have other sorts of commissionaires.
28:51How do you mean?
28:52Well, I mean, like, are you a sergeant?
28:54What are you on about?
28:56No, what I mean is, do you tell people what to do?
28:59Is that why you wear a uniform?
29:00People tell me what to do, son.
29:02I stand at that desk and people tell me what to do.
29:05I've obeyed orders to the letter.
29:06Yeah?
29:07Yeah.
29:08You knuckled down to it, son.
29:09I did.
29:10Well, I'm lucky, Dad.
29:12Yeah, well, you be lucky then, son, while you can.
29:19Um, this is still...
29:205C.
29:22Yes.
29:23Um, did I see you last year?
29:25No.
29:26No?
29:28And you'll be taking CSEs in...?
29:31English, metalwork, market engineering.
29:34Yes.
29:35And what sort of thing had you in mind?
29:37Um, Turner.
29:39How do you mean?
29:40What sort of job had you in mind?
29:43I hadn't thought.
29:44No.
29:46Well, I shouldn't have thought clerical work.
29:48What?
29:49Um, a bank, say.
29:51Oh, yeah.
29:53I wouldn't mind a bank.
29:55Ah, yes, but I think, um...
29:58What?
29:59Well, you'd need O-levels.
30:01I should never have mentioned a bank.
30:03Yeah.
30:04It was just an example.
30:06I see.
30:08Well, what then?
30:09Well, had you any ideas?
30:12Not a factory?
30:13No.
30:15I don't know.
30:18You sure I wouldn't get into a bank?
30:20Quite sure.
30:22I think I would have fancied a bank.
30:24Well, I'm afraid a bank is out.
30:27Um, absolutely out.
30:29I'll be quite frank with you.
30:31The job situation in this borough is, um...
30:34Bad, right?
30:35I'm afraid so.
30:37There's a vacancy on, um, this list at Denham's.
30:41What's that, pecking or something?
30:43Uh, I imagine so, yes.
30:45No.
30:46No?
30:47No.
30:56Well, OK then.
31:10Right.
31:11I'll be an astronaut.
31:18You coming to the cuts thing?
31:20Yeah.
31:23Do you know how many geography books it takes
31:25to make a Pershing missile?
31:27No.
31:283,700,829.
31:32Hmm.
31:34Hmm.
31:36Why do we do it?
31:38We love it.
31:39That's why we do it.
31:41Well, I don't know.
31:43Why do we do it?
31:45We love it.
31:46That's why we do it.
31:48They move on, we stay here, right?
31:50We like that.
31:52Those are CSE projects.
31:54English.
31:55Any good?
31:56Apart from a few.
31:57Jarvis.
31:58And Lipton.
32:00He's a bright lad, that Jarvis.
32:02Not syntax-wise.
32:04He's good with his hands.
32:05Is he?
32:06You surprise me.
32:07There are no rules about these things.
32:10He's got a job too.
32:12Engineering factory.
32:13He just went out and fixed it all on his own.
32:16All on his own.
32:19It's a great secret, he tells me.
32:32Alan?
32:34Alan, love?
32:37Alan, cup of tea?
32:41What you been doing?
32:42Nothing.
32:43Alan?
32:45Don't go in there.
32:46Why not?
32:47My lamp's in there.
32:49Oh, lovely.
32:50It ain't lovely.
32:52I'm sure it's lovely.
32:56Alan?
33:00It's horrible.
33:06Well, just look at it.
33:09What did you say it was?
33:11It's a lamp.
33:13Fell off of a lorry, did it?
33:15Erm, what's this?
33:17It's my drawing.
33:19I see.
33:20You're supposed to design it, see?
33:22Yeah.
33:23Well, that's the idea.
33:25Well, it's lovely.
33:26No, it isn't.
33:27Well, never...
33:28What's the matter, lovey?
33:31Stop it, can't ya?
33:34Well, it's not that important.
33:36It is, though, innit?
33:38I've got my exam at the end of the term.
33:40What sort of a mark am I gonna get with a thing like this, eh?
33:43Well, you might get some credit for trying.
33:46I'm fed up with trying.
33:48All I do is try, innit?
33:54Well, you was always more one for reading.
33:57Well, how come they don't reckon me on English either, eh?
34:00Or maths or geography or any of them things?
34:03How come every time I open a book, my eyes go funny?
34:08How come I'm so stupid?
34:10I don't know.
34:12You must have got it from your dad.
34:14Stop it!
34:15Look, don't cry, please.
34:17I can't stand that.
34:19How come you never tell me where he went?
34:22Lovey!
34:23How come?
34:24All I ever got from you was stupid answers.
34:28I'll find him one day, though.
34:30He'll tell me how to do this.
34:32I bet he was, Andy.
34:34Oh, no, he wasn't, Alan.
34:36He was as much use as a budgery guy, your dad.
34:40Well, maybe he thought the same about you, eh?
34:42Maybe that's why he left.
34:44Do you mind why he left or where he went?
34:47But, Mum!
34:49All I want to know is where this leaves me.
34:51Where's this leave me, eh?
34:53That is your affair, Alan.
34:55Entirely your affair.
35:03Now, I don't want to add anything to what the headmaster has been telling you
35:07about the difficulties you may face when you leave here.
35:10Now, all I'd like to say to all you fifth-year leavers is this.
35:14More than skills, more than attainments,
35:17it seems to me that you take from a school
35:20something I'd call a life.
35:22A life that's more than a career,
35:24a life that's more than a career,
35:26a life that's more than a career,
35:28a life that's more than a career,
35:30it seems to me that you take from a school
35:32something I'd call a way of looking at the world,
35:35a way of dealing with others.
35:37Call it what you like.
35:39Decency, plain dealing, compassion,
35:41in your dealings with others.
35:43Now, what I'd like you to take from your time at Bella Glen
35:46is a willingness to behave well towards others.
35:49And in finding out what is the correct course for you,
35:52and there'll be as many choices as there are individuals in the fifth year,
35:56to be truthful to yourselves.
35:59I wish you all the very best of luck.
36:02CHEERING
36:13Yeah!
36:28Hello, hello, hello.
36:30What do you want, Manning? You, Turner.
36:33Get lost.
36:35No teachers out here, Turner. No-one to run to.
36:38Who's running? You will be. Oh, yeah?
36:40Certainly.
36:42Didn't you know, Turner?
36:44Out here, it's one long punch-up.
36:47Get lost.
37:00BELL RINGS
37:24Hello, lovey.
37:26Kiss for Mummy.
37:31Are you OK?
37:33I'm all right.
37:34Where's your friend tonight, then?
37:36Which friend?
37:37Jenny Jarvis.
37:39Oh, yeah, it rang out so much.
37:41What's he doing, then?
37:43Dunno. Up to something.
37:47They go down the disco.
37:51Your benefit stops next week, lovey.
37:53Yeah?
37:55When you're 16, I... I don't get benefit.
37:59I know.
38:03There's a lot of things I should have told you.
38:05Such as?
38:07I should...
38:10..let her come for you.
38:12Yeah.
38:13When you're down. Yeah? Where is it?
38:17I threw it out. You what?
38:19I threw it out. Oh, for Christ's sake, stop messing me about.
38:22What have you done with it?
38:24You've gone looking for it.
38:26Where is it?
38:28That's what I go looking for it for.
38:30You see to you, eh?
38:32He give you nothing.
38:34He took everything I had from me.
38:36One piece at a time.
38:40Oh, I'm sorry, lovey.
38:42I made a bit to drink.
38:44I've got it! I'm going out!
38:46Alan! Alan!
38:58ALAN WHISTLES
39:21Dear Alan, I'm at this address for a few days.
39:24Come and stay free of charge.
39:26All the best, your father.
39:35Hello, then. Hi, mate.
39:37Your mum said you was out here. Yeah? Yeah.
39:40I ain't seen you. No.
39:42You been hiding?
39:45No, I got a job.
39:49You never told me. No.
39:52Why not?
39:54I didn't like to.
39:56Why? Because I ain't right.
39:59Right.
40:03I've been for eight interviews. Yeah?
40:05Yeah.
40:07Reports don't help.
40:09I'm satisfactory.
40:11But these days, there ain't enough to be satisfactory.
40:14No.
40:16Where are you going, then?
40:18Engineering. Small place.
40:20Good money? Yeah, it's all right.
40:23Well, well done, then.
40:26Yeah.
40:28You won't need me around now.
40:30Why not? Oh, you'll have money, won't you?
40:32You'll be off to pubs and discos and that.
40:34No, I won't.
40:36Most of me old lady.
40:39You never was much of a loony, was you, Jarvis?
40:42You'll go just the way your old man.
40:47Well done, anyway.
40:49We'll see each other. Sure.
40:52Oh, you'll get fixed up, won't you?
40:54Make something of myself, right?
40:56That's it.
40:58I'll see you around, maybe.
41:00You could have told me. I wouldn't have burst into bleeding tears.
41:04Lipton!
41:06Lipton!
41:08Who's too stuck-up to talk now, eh?
41:11Isn't me, is it?
41:13I thought we was mates now.
41:16What difference does...
41:23Suddenly, I had something much more important to think about
41:27than Johnny's friendship.
41:39I thought I was off on the greatest adventure of my life,
41:43to find my dad.
41:46I should have looked over my shoulder that day.
41:49I should have looked over my shoulder that day.
41:52I might have dodged a lot of trouble.
41:57But I was only 16.
42:00I was in love with the idea of having a father at last.
42:20Hello, son.
42:22Hello.
42:24You must be Alan.
42:26I'm 16.
42:28Come in. Right.
42:38Sorry about the mess.
42:40Oh, it's OK.
42:42There's a woman supposed to come and clean, but does she clean?
42:47No, she doesn't.
42:49Right.
42:51You OK, then?
42:53Never better, never better.
42:55You all right there?
42:57Oh, I'm OK, thanks, yeah.
42:59Yeah.
43:01You've got a lot to talk about.
43:03Yeah.
43:05Has she, er...
43:07said anything?
43:09The first hard news I got was when I got the letter.
43:13Yeah. Yeah, yeah, just like your mother.
43:18Is that a car?
43:20I don't know.
43:22Have a look for us, would you?
43:24Just peek through the curtains in the front.
43:26What?
43:28Yeah, the curtains.
43:38All clear?
43:40All clear?
43:42Well, there's a car with two geezers in it.
43:44Hey.
43:46Yeah.
43:48What?
43:50Listen, I've got to nip out for a moment.
43:52What? Yeah, just for a moment.
43:54Oh. Er, if they ring the bell...
43:56What? They're by way of being business partners of mine, but...
43:59But what?
44:01I've got a liquidity problem just at the moment.
44:03Stall them, would you?
44:06Nice seeing you again.
44:08What do you mean, again?
44:38Hello?
44:40Well, what do you know, Arthur?
44:42A genuine Londoner.
44:44What do you want?
44:46You'll find out.
44:52You just do what the colonel says, eh?
44:54So.
44:56You're Alan Lipton.
44:58That's it.
45:00Just like his father, wouldn't you say?
45:03And what do you want with him?
45:05If you see him, you tell him it's OK.
45:08I can wait for the money.
45:10Right, I'll do that.
45:12Good boy.
45:14But what do you know, Arthur?
45:16Me and Jakey have got a new channel of communication.
45:35OK.
46:05OK.
46:35OK.
