Red Sox lose to Astros. Is this series make or break?
Transcript
00:00In late August, one in which you have entered three plus games out of the wildcard, Curtis and others.
00:08Would it be a good thing to not be walked off by the opponent?
00:12That is my question for you this morning.
00:14Would that be a good thing in a series that you must win if you want to remain relevant when it comes to that third and final wildcard?
00:22Is that, would that be a good thing?
00:24Generally speaking, it's frowned upon.
00:27And I would also add that if your goal is the third and final wildcard, it might behoove you to set bigger goals so that if you fail, you're still a playoff team.
00:40The Red Sox, since the break, how many games have they led and then lost?
00:47It's so frustrating because they do this same thing where they pull you back in.
00:55They struggled right after the all-star break and then we're like, okay, put a fork in them.
01:02And then suddenly they win a couple series.
01:05It's like, okay, they might be back in it.
01:08And then you look at like this series.
01:11I hate to be dramatic, but if you do not find a way to win this series, like forget about it.
01:20Let it go, man.
01:21Let it go, right?
01:22Just got to let it go.
01:23I think when you look at the Red Sox, I mean, the expectations were coming into the season, not very high.
01:30They're doing better than we expected, but it seems like in the sailing community, there is no more wind left at sea.
01:39Does it matter to you though, that the Astros are a pretty good team this season?
01:43No, it doesn't matter.
01:44It's coming at a wrong point of the season because you need the Red Sox to prove something, but they're not a nothing burger when it comes to team.
01:53The Astros?
01:54No, the Red Sox.
01:55No, the Astros.
01:56No, but that's the issue.
01:58It's like fake pubes.
02:01It's like you've been, it's false advertising.
02:05Jackson just woke up.
02:07Morning, Jackson.
02:09By the way, Shyam is off today.
02:10Jackson, your one and only focus is operating the board this morning.
02:15You got that right.
02:16I'm assuming that you have a lead.
02:18I do have a lead, yes.
02:19Okay, that's fine.
02:20We will get to your lead.
02:21Are you filing any kind of a live on the scene report like you did yesterday from the Topless protest?
02:27No, there's no breaking news that I need to cover at the moment, but if there is some, I will be there.
02:33We are glad to have you.
02:34Shyam enjoying a couple well-deserved flex days on old Cape Cod.
02:40And I have to commend you, Greg.
02:41Yes.
02:42In order to get Shyam back where he was by Thanksgiving, I saw you send six bar pizzas to his room.
02:48But that's the problem is like you can hang around and be relevant when it comes to that third wild card spot and you're only beating teams that are meh.
02:59They are who we thought they are.
03:01Coming back down to earth, man.
03:03And I think the expectations of, you know, what you're expecting now moving forward.
03:09I, you know, they're going to they're going to keep you kind of like they're going to be like white noise in the background elevator music when they put you on hold.
03:21You'll hear it.
03:22You really won't pay attention, but you'll keep your eye on it.
03:25But did you expect anything more?
03:29I did.
03:30Because I thought that going into the deadline, you locked down Alex Cora for three years and you did you did some addition.
03:39It wasn't the splashy addition that some wanted.
03:43But my expectation was that it was a baseball team full of young guys with a lot of passion and desire to to be in it in September.
03:58So I mean, they're in it.
04:00They're not.
04:01They're not in it.
04:02Like, I mean, they're in it if they win this series, I guess.
04:05Then fine.
04:06So you got to win four games.
04:08You got to win the next three down there against the Astros.
04:11Well, I mean, when I say they're in it, thoughts and prayers on getting that done.
04:15Right. When I say they're in it, they're going to they're going to be right there till the end of the season where you're going to be keeping your eye on them.
04:22I don't think so.
04:23I mean, I think they're going to fall out of it so bad where they get like a back there three.
04:28They were. Curtis, correct me if I'm wrong.
04:30Three and a half out of that final wildcard heading into this series last night.
04:36Right now, according to the ESPN model, I think it's fangraphs.
04:40Their odds are their percent chance of making the playoffs is under twenty nine.
04:43Well, I'm not saying they're going to make the playoffs, but they're going to stay close enough within striking distance that she'll go, OK, if they can maybe hit a run.
04:52If they go five hundred between this series and Arizona, I think people are still interested.
04:57I think they do. I think people have just kind of said, yeah, they are what they are.
05:01Everybody's starting to come back down to earth. The expectations.
05:05What about Lucas Sims, the guy that was brought in by Breslow?
05:08Obviously, we don't watch a lot of Reds bullpen action, but he's pitched eleven innings, allowed six earned runs and cost you a couple of games.
05:14Yeah. If you win the two games he cost you, you're sixty seven and fifty seven and you're two games out.
05:21And he won you one. Right. One week ago. Right.
05:25So and other than that, he has been he is the reason that some would refer to he and and his ilk as the blow pen for the Boston Red Sox.
05:35I think they have twelve blown saves since the All-Star break.
05:39And yesterday you have two to run leads. You gag both.
05:42And I'm sorry, Wiggy, the the core of the core defense is there because we now believe in him long term.
05:49He's here for three more years. He's invested. But if Cora didn't have the extension, wouldn't we be talking about another post deadline swoon?
05:57Yes. Yep. And it's amazing. It has nothing to do with the deadline.
06:00But that's why the ownership group, I think, feels like they threw you a bone on Alex Cora.
06:07And so who cares what happens when it comes to the season?
06:10Not three years in a row. I think they I think they feel like they did you a solid and that you're going to you're going to stare at that shiny object.
06:18And you're not going to pay attention to what's going on on the diamond.
06:22Yeah, but they did everything. I think they did everything for the team.
06:26They went out, they got players granted one big, big name players.
06:30We didn't make a big move, but I didn't say it wasn't a big move, but they made moves.
06:33This is three years in a row. Let's stop defending the Alex Cora and the players.
06:39This is three years in a row.
06:42You defend the ownership group because that's what you know.
06:45No, I defend them if they make moves because everybody wants to.
06:50Anytime there's an issue on the field or with the Red Sox, everybody instantly wants to blame ownership.
06:57This is three years in a row. Give me a significant move that they made.
07:01Well, I didn't say a significant move. There you go. You move the goalposts.
07:05I'm not moving any kind of goalposts. And also could use a baseball appropriate reference.
07:10You're bringing the fences in.
07:14I moved the rubber.
07:16Yeah, your strike zone is changing.
