00:20to preview our game against Tottenham this weekend.
00:22We'll start off with Anton, Sky.
00:24Hiya.
00:27I think that's quite often the case,
00:29it's a bit of an off-field match to start with.
00:31That's why, first off...

00:33I'm surprised anything gets put up.
00:36Let's start, obviously, with the ownership situation.
00:39Jon Text has been having communications with
00:42Fahad Moshiri this week.
00:43I was wondering if you had received any updates
00:45about the transfer situation when he was here?
00:47No.
00:48Again, it's popular belief.
00:50I'm not always in the loop with them sort of talks
00:53about the total ownership of the club.
00:56I do know somewhat, but not in this case.
00:58I know he's around as possibly a buyer of the club,
01:01but not actually anywhere near me as such.
01:05How are you going to feel when someone touches you
01:07on the shoulder and says,
01:08Sean, you've finally got this issue?
01:10It only really affects what I do,
01:12is about the possible future of budgets and money, really.
01:16Because when you think about it,
01:18our job is still to stay tuned in to the fact
01:20we need to win football matches.
01:21I made sure that we saw through all the challenges
01:23of last year by sticking to that
01:25and encouraging the players and the staff to stick to that.
01:28Outside of that, it doesn't change that much
01:30until it comes usually, not always,
01:32but it might be a change of strategy, of course,
01:34but that usually, somewhere down the line,
01:36involves finance, usually.
01:38You mentioned budgets.
01:40We're getting towards the end of the transfer market.
01:43Do you expect a busy final week?
01:46No, I think it's unlikely.
01:48We've worked very hard in the market.
01:50We've brought in players who we think can develop
01:52into the Premier League.
01:54They're not all game-ready straight away,
01:57but we think they're good players
01:58and can grow into the club and to the Premier League.
02:01If you take Tim's de Neves,
02:03I think Tim's minutes were about, league-wise,
02:06I think he had about two games' worth of minutes last season.
02:09Jasper, about eight.
02:11Illy, like 17 or something.
02:13So there's a long way for them guys
02:15to get to full Premier League speed,
02:17but we believe they're very talented players.
02:19Jake's slightly different.
02:20He played a bit more.
02:21And then when you think of that
02:24and working very hard to get them deals done
02:27and losing players as well,
02:29then there's not much more wiggle room, I don't think.
02:32And if there is, then that's helpful.
02:34If there's not, then that's the way it is.
02:36I suppose the wiggle room increases
02:38as more senior, more big-name assets move on.
02:42Do you see that being unlikely?
02:44Not at the moment, unless I'm told any different
02:46according to the market, but not at the moment.
02:49I think the club seem pretty steadfast
02:51with the business we've done.
02:53The shift in the sands of football,
02:55who knows what happens?
02:56But generally, I think it's in a place
02:58where everyone said,
02:59right, OK, we are where we are, type of thing.
03:02Finally on that,
03:03Kieran Trippie is a name that's come up today.

03:06He's one of many names that's come up here.
03:08As if by magic, his name comes up
03:10when we haven't got a right pack about him.
03:12It's funny, though, isn't it?
03:13It works in the studio.
03:14No, it does work. It's incredible.
03:16How big is this game at this weekend?
03:18They're all big games.
03:19I've said it ever since I've been here,
03:20every game's a big game.
03:22People always laugh at me for saying that,
03:24but it is.
03:25It's Everton Football Club,
03:26regardless of any of the rules and reasons,
03:28all go out the window.
03:29I've learned that.
03:30It's about winning.
03:31It's about taking on the next challenge.
03:32It's about reacting on this occasion.
03:35The storyline changes very quickly,
03:37so we've got to correct it.
03:38It's a tough task,
03:39going down to a very strong Tottenham side.
03:41We know that.
03:42They've invested heavily.
03:43They had a good season last season.
03:44We're stretched, unfortunately.
03:45We're down to about 14
03:46recognised first-team players at the minute,
03:48so that's not perfect,
03:50but the challenge is right in front of us,
03:51as always.
03:55Talking about responding
03:57and the challenges you had to overcome last season,
03:59during that time,
04:00you spoke a lot about seeing the positives
04:02and appreciating what was building behind the scenes,
04:05even if the results weren't going your way,
04:07obviously, at the start of the weekend.
04:09Not the result you would have wanted,
04:11but what positives can you take from it
04:12and what do you want to build on?
04:15The positives are the sense
04:17it was a very thorough performance
04:19until two big mistakes cost us.
04:21Even the first goal was a mistake
04:23from not being in the right position on turnover,
04:26but the second two are hard,
04:28as a manager and as a group,
04:30to legislate for, quite obviously.
04:33We've lost a few bodies in pre-season,
04:35which has been unfortunate.
04:36They're searching for true fitness.
04:38We've got to get them fit,
04:39and we've lost more
04:40who might not be available for this weekend.
04:42That's just one-end things,
04:43but what we have learned
04:44is you've got to stay steadfast to the cause
04:46and what's right in front of you,
04:47and I think we've done that.
04:48We've shown signs of doing that
04:50during the whole of pre-season,
04:51because we've had more challenges,
04:52mainly with injuries,
04:53and obviously losing players
04:55and trying to shuffle the pack.
04:57It's the ongoing challenge
04:58of what is currently the life at Everton.
05:01There's been many easy rides since I've been here,
05:04and we start immediately
05:05and you're immediately back to square one
05:07wherever it says,
05:08right, you're not doing this,
05:09you're not doing that,
05:10and that's just life at Everton.
05:11That's the way it is.
05:12Without an away win in the calendar year,
05:14but a new season, a fresh start,
05:16how key to the success of the club this season
05:18will be changing that record early on?
05:21Yes, when I got here,
05:22it was changing the away record,
05:23then it was changing the home record,
05:24and now it's changing all the records.
05:25So, like I say,
05:26this is standard for what I've learned about the club.
05:30We have to make sure
05:32that we're addressing both markets,
05:34that being home and away.
05:36They're both important.
05:37We were very strong at home
05:38at the end of last season.
05:40We've got to make sure we provide that again.
05:43We didn't have a good start, obviously.
05:45Away games, you know,
05:47they're challenges everywhere you go,
05:48and you want to go to these places,
05:49particularly you'd class Tottenham
05:51currently in the top six,
05:52that's for sure,
05:53or most people would,
05:55and it's a big challenge,
05:57and we are thin in numbers,
05:59but we have to go down there
06:00and take on the game like we always do.
06:02You mentioned some of the updates in the team news.
06:04Gerard Brantway obviously played a huge role
06:07the last time you met Tottenham in the league.
06:10Where's he at with his recovery?
06:13Yeah, he's still a bit away.
06:14He's not close at the moment.
06:16A few of the lads are getting a bit closer.
06:18Seamus is a bit closer.
06:20Jimmy Garner's a bit closer,
06:21just coming back in training with the group.
06:23Taki's got a maybe situation,
06:25so we're going to have to look at that
06:26going into the next game.
06:27We obviously know the right-back situation
06:29with the suspension of Young as well.
06:32Yousef's a bit longer term as well.
06:34Paterson's a bit longer term as well.
06:36Still a challenge ongoing,
06:38and we haven't got much situation
06:41to correct it with financially,
06:42so we're just going to work with the players
06:44and hope their fitness gets back
06:47to being fully fit and then stay fit.
06:54You've said there that some of the newer players
06:56are not always game ready,
06:58but given the list of injuries you've just said there,
07:01and now Tarkovsky being a maybe,
07:03is there a fine line with the younger players
07:06or the ones that have come in
07:07with getting that experience and learning
07:09or just throwing them in?
07:11I just wondered when do you deem them ready,
07:13and is this a case now where they're major players?
07:15Yeah, it's a tough call.
07:16The throwing them in idea,
07:17it was never really throwing them in.
07:19Very rarely do managers literally do that.
07:21Last chance to loom,
07:23maybe if they've just got nothing else.
07:25But you try and get players when,
07:27to be fair to them,
07:28don't forget to give them a chance
07:29when you feel they're ready to deliver.
07:31Because you can detract from a player's start point
07:34if you put them in,
07:35it's too early and they're not ready.
07:37The game's more unforgiving now.
07:39It used to be 30 years ago,
07:41you put young players in,
07:42everyone accepted it.
07:43Now you put them in and they're,
07:44well, why did you put him in if he's not ready?
07:46So that's the challenge.
07:47And it's finding that balance.
07:49And I think some get,
07:51excuse me,
07:52you've heard me speak about two careers now.
07:54They often now have a career away from the main club,
07:57particularly Premier League clubs
07:58that have a career away from that
07:59come back to the Premier League club
08:00and then find their way.
08:02And if they haven't had that,
08:03it can be more difficult.
08:05Some players go straight in,
08:07you know,
08:08Dwight Minnili's now here.
08:09When he was with me at the previous club,
08:10we put him straight in,
08:11straight out of the blue,
08:12didn't have a loan,
08:13just went straight in
08:14and he never really came out.
08:15That's few and far between now,
08:17I think.
08:18So it's a much more difficult kind of situation
08:21to make sure they get a chance to play
08:23and make sure they've got the strength around them,
08:25don't forget,
08:26that they can have that strength
08:27to build from and play.
08:28And therefore develop.
08:29You were at the Under-21s game
08:31at Trammere as well this week.
08:33Does that mean,
08:34you know,
08:35you just said there,
08:36last chance saluting,
08:37that you're very low on numbers.
08:38Are you looking to some of those younger players now
08:40to step up this weekend?
08:41Yeah,
08:42but it's not as simple as just saying step up.
08:43They all want to step up,
08:44but they've got to be ready.
08:45You know,
08:46they've got to be good enough for the challenge.
08:47The Premier League's a very unforgiving league
08:48and like I said,
08:49the players we've brought in,
08:50when you look at their minutes from last season,
08:52to throw them straight in the Premier League
08:53is very difficult.
08:54You know,
08:55some of them have hardly played
08:57during pre-season as well,
08:58don't forget.
08:59Tim's the exception.
09:00He was with us early,
09:01so he did virtually all of everything with us.
09:03So therefore,
09:04he's adapted,
09:05he's learned,
09:06he's got stronger as the season has gone on
09:07and he looks game ready
09:08by the way he's performing
09:09during pre-season and last week
09:10when I thought he played very well.
09:12Still got the nuts and bolts to learn
09:13because he's a very young player still,
09:15particularly in the Premier League
09:16in the sense of experience,
09:17but he's shown very strong signs.
09:19So,
09:20fast-tracking is a
09:21is a
09:22is a
09:23a risk and reward situation.
09:24But you want to fast-track players,
09:25ideally,
09:26when they're going into a very strong unit.
09:27At the minute,
09:28we are missing some very important players
09:30and they've proved to be very important players.
09:32Could you just give us an update on Dele Alli?
09:34I know you said you wanted to give him
09:35some behind-closed-doors games and
09:37Yeah, he's just not ready for that yet.
09:39That's all it is.
09:40Would he want to stay?
09:42Well, we haven't gone down that road
09:43because he's not ready to play yet.
09:44You have to be ready to play
09:45to know what your future holds.
09:47So he hasn't played in a long time.
09:49I just want to ask you as well,
09:50a lot was made about comments after the game
09:52about fans leaving early.
09:54Some took it as a criticism of Everton's fan base.
09:57I've never criticised the fans here.
09:59Ever since I've been here.
10:00I was just making a valid point
10:01of the obvious reality.
10:03You know, you're 2-0 down,
10:04you go 3-0 down,
10:05you've got 10 men in the Premier League.
10:06It's very difficult, that scenario,
10:08to get back from.
10:09So, you know, if you're a fan,
10:10you're going to go,
10:11well, I should have got off early.
10:13I wasn't criticising anyone.
10:14That's just a human thing,
10:15I would imagine.
10:16I don't go to many games in that respect,
10:18but I would imagine if you're a fan
10:19and you sit there and go,
10:20well, I don't think much is going to change
10:21in this scenario.

10:44If it becomes long-term,
10:45that's different,
10:46but we've just been unfortunate
10:47in the sense that Young
10:48has got suspended,
10:49Shame's got a short-term injury.
10:50Let's hope so.
10:51It's seemingly so.
10:52He's going well on his recovery now.
10:54So, you know,
10:55you're not just going to make
10:57a knee-jerk decision
10:58because of what might be one game.
11:00We're not sure,
11:01but it could be just this weekend.
11:03Well, we haven't got the finances
11:04to do that, obviously.
11:05It'd have to be something
11:06that we think can add to the group
11:07longer term,
11:08not just one game.
11:16No, I don't think the hope would change.
11:18I think looking at the last three seasons
11:20of this Football Club,
11:21every season is a hope season.
11:22It's not a guarantee.
11:23Everyone's looking at it going,
11:25we hope for a better season.
11:27We've lost players.
11:28We've tried to adjust the squad.
11:30We're working as hard as we can
11:32to stay competitive.
11:33So, it's not about hope.
11:34It's about keeping the edge
11:35to be competitive
11:36and see where it takes us.
11:37My marker has only been to progress,
11:40and that's what we're looking to do this season,
11:41just get a team that can progress,
11:42learn and improve.
11:51That's it.
