00:00The magic lamp.
00:04Narrow-gauge engines work very hard.
00:10They puff and chuff all day up and down the hills.
00:19One day, the winding gear that carried coal trucks up and down the incline broke.
00:25The engines had to work extra hard,
00:29pulling heavy coal trucks up and down the long, steep track.
00:36Until, at the end of the day, they could ease their aching axles.
00:43That evening, Thomas puffed into the transfer yard.
00:47All the narrow-gauge engines were there.
00:50Thomas was delivering steel winches and wires to repair the broken incline.
00:56Listen, Thomas, hooted Rusty.
00:58Skarloey's telling us a story from the hills.
01:02Long, long ago, began Skarloey, there was an old engine called Proteus.
01:09His lamp was so bright you could see it for miles around.
01:15Proteus said it was a magic lamp.
01:20He promised that if any engine ever found a lamp, their wishes would come true.
01:26How would you know it was Proteus's lamp? asked Duncan.
01:31First, you feel a rush of wind whenever the lamp is near, Skarloey chuffed quietly.
01:38Then you hear a strange creaking sound.
01:42And finally, he added, you'll see it flicker.
01:47On and off, off and on.
01:50Peter Sam huffed loudly.
01:52I don't believe there's a magic lamp.
01:57Soon, all the steel winches and wires were loaded into Peter Sam's trucks.
02:02I have work to do, huffed Peter Sam.
02:05I'm a really useful engine, not a really silly one.
02:09The incline must be working by morning, so I won't be wasting my time looking for a silly magic lamp, he tooted proudly.
02:17And he steamed quickly away.
02:23The moon was bright.
02:25Peter Sam huffed and puffed.
02:28The magic lamp I know isn't true.
02:31It's just an old story and quite silly too.
02:36Peter Sam clickety clacked towards a junction.
02:41Suddenly, he felt a great rush of wind.
02:47His axles rattled and his couplings creaked.
02:50What's happening? Peter Sam whistled.
02:54He was so surprised, he puffed right past the junction.
03:00And up the wrong line away from the incline.
03:03Peter Sam still didn't believe Skarloey's story about proses as magic lamp.
03:09But then, he heard a creaking sound and his wheels began to wobble.
03:17Up ahead, a light flickered off and on, on and off.
03:23Then he saw it.
03:25It was just the fogman's lantern.
03:28It creaked and croaked as it swung outside his cabin.
03:32Peter Sam felt better.
03:35He chuffed past.
03:38Peter Sam was now even further away from the incline.
03:41The magic lamp I know isn't true.
03:44It's just an old story and quite silly too.
03:47He huffed quietly to himself.
03:50Then suddenly, there was another rush of wind.
03:54Then, a creaking sound.
03:57And finally, a flickering light.
04:00On and off, off and on.
04:04The wind, the creaking sound and the flickering light.
04:08Could it be Proteus' lamp, thought Peter Sam.
04:12Then he saw it.
04:15It wasn't Proteus' lamp.
04:17It was the light from a bonfire at the children's campsite.
04:20And it was the trees that were creaking in the wind.
04:24I knew that all along, sighed Peter Sam.
04:27But now, he chuffed on even more slowly.
04:31Peter Sam was now at the bottom of a steep hill.
04:35And now he was completely lost.
04:38He didn't know what to do.
04:40I wish I could find the incline.
04:42And I wish I could be safe at home in the sheds with the other engines.
04:46And I wish, Peter Sam puffed quietly,
04:50I wish I could find Proteus' lamp.
04:53Perhaps then my wishes would come true.
04:57Suddenly he felt a rush of wind whip around his wheels.
05:02Then he heard the strangest creaking, croaking sound.
05:07And then he saw a flickering light that flashed on and off, off and on.
05:13It came from the top of the hill.
05:16Peter Sam gasped.
05:18It must be Proteus' magic lamp.
05:21He knew he had to go up the hill and find it.
05:26The wind whirred and stirred.
05:29The sound became a whooshing and a wheeshing.
05:33And the light flickered brighter and brighter.
05:36Peter Sam puffed to the top of the hill.
05:40And there was Harold the Helicopter.
05:44His blades made a wind that whirred and stirred.
05:49The sound whooshed and wheeshed as the blades spun round.
05:53And Harold's bright light flickered on and off, off and on.
05:59Peter Sam was very surprised.
06:02Harold, he gasped.
06:04Hello, hummed Harold.
06:06I was dropping off some packages for the hill farms.
06:09What are you doing?
06:11I'm lost, Peter Sam said.
06:14And I'm going to be very late to deliver the winches and wires to the incline.
06:18No problem, old chap. I'll show you the way.
06:22And Harold took to the air.
06:25His strong light shone brightly and showed Peter Sam the right way to the incline.
06:39Later, on his way home, Peter Sam couldn't stop thinking about what had happened.
06:46Maybe, puffed Peter Sam quietly, you don't have to see the magic lamp for your wishes to come true.
06:54Maybe it's enough just to believe in it.
