00:00:30Check.
00:01:00School trip..
00:01:07School trip...
00:01:13School trip...
00:01:18School trip...
00:01:23We did it!
00:01:30We did it, young lady.
00:01:32Half second to spare.
00:01:33Full recovery, then three more.
00:01:34Proud of you, Brittany.
00:01:35Proud of you.
00:01:36Thanks, Coach.
00:01:37Hey.
00:01:38Hi.
00:01:39How are you?
00:01:40I'm good.
00:01:41I'm good.
00:01:42How are you?
00:01:43Good.
00:01:44I'm so glad to see you.
00:01:45Yeah, me too.
00:01:46Oh, Coach Michaels, this is my wife.
00:01:47Hi.
00:01:48How are you?
00:01:49I'm good.
00:01:50I'm good.
00:01:51How are you?
00:01:52Good.
00:01:53I'm good.
00:01:54I'm good.
00:01:55I'm good.
00:01:56This is my high school cross-country coach, Coach Donnelly.
00:01:57Ah, so you're the one that discovered Brittany.
00:01:58Well, I think that Brittany discovered herself.
00:02:00Jeffrey Michaels, pleasure to meet you.
00:02:02Courtney Smith Donnelly.
00:02:03Nice to meet you, too.
00:02:04And yes, she's the one.
00:02:05Her friends, Anna and Heidi, talked her into coming out for cross-country her senior year.
00:02:08Yeah, and Coach, I had never run before in my life, thought I was going to hate it, but
00:02:13I ended up making top seven.
00:02:14I saw she had some natural speed, so I encouraged her to go off her track.
00:02:18She begged me.
00:02:19I begged.
00:02:20I did.
00:02:21I begged.
00:02:22I'm sure glad you did.
00:02:23So, we ended up setting the record in the 800 meter at Orange Hills Academy and wound
00:02:26up as state champs.
00:02:27That's where I came on this scene.
00:02:28It's sure nice to meet your first coach.
00:02:29Thank you.
00:02:30Perhaps we can talk some more at the conference.
00:02:31Yeah, I'd love that.
00:02:32It starts tonight and goes all the way tomorrow.
00:02:33Is it just for high school coaches?
00:02:34No, actually, it's for middle school, high school, college, officials, administrators,
00:02:35all the Christian schools in the state.
00:02:36Just a way for everybody to get to know one another.
00:02:37Sounds like fun.
00:02:38Yeah, I think it should be.
00:02:39But, I don't know.
00:02:40I don't know.
00:02:41I don't know.
00:02:42I don't know.
00:02:43I don't know.
00:02:44I don't know.
00:02:45I don't know.
00:02:46I don't know.
00:02:47Just a way for everybody to get to know one another.
00:02:50Sounds like fun.
00:02:51Yeah, I think it should be.
00:02:52But, enough about me.
00:02:53Tell me about you.
00:02:54Well, I like my classes, the school.
00:02:59I have some great friends.
00:03:01I like track and I love my coach.
00:03:04Coach Michaels trains the distance runners and he's also the head coach.
00:03:08He seems very nice.
00:03:09He's the best.
00:03:11Oh, and I have a boyfriend.
00:03:13Oh?
00:03:14Yeah.
00:03:15His name is Chris.
00:03:17He's on the track team and he runs the 800.
00:03:20Okay.
00:03:21Okay.
00:03:22So, can you beat him?
00:03:29Hello, Doc.
00:03:32Dr. Harris?
00:03:34Have you ever thought about retiring?
00:03:37Yes.
00:03:38But, if I retire, I won't have anything to do.
00:03:40Do you play golf?
00:03:41No.
00:03:42Why not?
00:03:43Because golf is the most frustrating game ever invented.
00:03:46I can't argue with you there.
00:03:49You didn't answer my well.
00:03:51Something's not right with your heart, Jeff.
00:03:53You really should retire.
00:03:55Before it retires you.
00:03:57Like, in the ground, six feet under.
00:03:59Well, we don't want to go there just yet.
00:04:03What is it?
00:04:05It's probably too much stress.
00:04:07Look, you teach classes all day long.
00:04:11You coach cross country in the fall, indoor track in winter, outdoor track in spring.
00:04:16And you've been doing it like, what, 100 years?
00:04:18The stress is too much for you.
00:04:2027 years.
00:04:24I love coaching.
00:04:26Then the love of it is too much for you.
00:04:28You're going to need extensive rest until we can get this thing figured out.
00:04:33Jeff, you need it now.
00:04:46So what events do you coach in track?
00:04:48Oh, I don't actually coach track.
00:04:52You coach cross country, but you don't coach track.
00:04:54Right.
00:04:55You ever run track?
00:04:57No, again.
00:04:58Okay, when I was in high school, I played golf in the spring and you both, so.
00:05:02Golf.
00:05:03Golf is the most frustrating game ever invented.
00:05:05Sounds like you play.
00:05:07No.
00:05:08Not anymore.
00:05:09For the exact same reason I just stated.
00:05:12Must be a pretty good game.
00:05:14Must be a pretty good golfer if you didn't run track in high school.
00:05:18Orange Hills Academy, that's where you coach cross country, right?
00:05:21Right.
00:05:22It's about an hour from here.
00:05:23Yes, sir.
00:05:24Brittany's a junior. I can't believe we've never met before now.
00:05:27I know. I've been meaning to come out to watch her run and I'm going to make it out to meet this year.
00:05:31Good.
00:05:32I've got a home meet coming up this weekend.
00:05:34Yeah, I'm planning on being there, actually.
00:05:36She'll appreciate that.
00:05:37She's ranked second, you know.
00:05:39Brittany's ranked second in the conference?
00:05:41Conference?
00:05:42She's second in the nation.
00:05:44NCCA.
00:05:47I did not know that Brittany was ranked second in the nation.
00:05:50National Christian Collegiate Association.
00:05:52Not the NCAA.
00:05:54We don't get them confused.
00:05:58We're a Christian college. Small.
00:06:01NCCA is made up of many schools around the country like us.
00:06:04We're not going to get the elite athlete to come here, but now and again, God will bless me with a little gem.
00:06:09She never told me she was ranked that high.
00:06:12She ran a 2.098 her first race this year.
00:06:16Granted, the top girls in the NCAA are going to be faster, but any time a young lady runs under 2.10 in the 800, pretty good.
00:06:24Absolutely.
00:06:26Last year during the regionals, a girl tripped and fell and Brittany and some of the other runners went down with her.
00:06:32She didn't qualify for the national.
00:06:35This year, the goal is to get to the national, place in the top three, and stand on that podium.
00:06:40You must be doing a great job training her.
00:06:43Thanks.
00:06:45You gave her a strong endurance base.
00:06:48Her high school track coach did okay.
00:06:51She's under my watch now.
00:06:54I'm pretty old school.
00:06:57Actually, my doctor's saying that I'm just old.
00:07:02Hey.
00:07:03You ready?
00:07:04Yes, I am.
00:07:05Wait, what'd you say?
00:07:06I said I'm ready.
00:07:09I said I'm ready.
00:07:10Hi, Mackenzie. Did you hear that?
00:07:12Hey, hear what?
00:07:13This is the first time she's ever been ready when I came to pick her up.
00:07:16It is not.
00:07:17Yes, it is. You're never ready. You're always in there with the door closed, right, Mackenzie?
00:07:21Don't drag me into your family squabbles.
00:07:23Oh, I see. Two against one. I can't win with you two, huh?
00:07:27Make sure you have her home by 10.
00:07:29The movie doesn't get out until 10.15.
00:07:31Guess you'll have to miss the ending then.
00:07:34See ya, Mom.
00:07:35She's never been ready and you know it.
00:07:42Let's see what we're doing today.
00:07:45200 repeats, 16 of them. We just did this.
00:07:48Coach Simpson, we just did 200 repeats a couple days ago.
00:07:52Yeah, I know. I'm combining everybody today.
00:07:54Well, can the 400 girls do something different?
00:07:57Sure. You can do 20 of them. How's that?
00:08:01You know, Leah, you question almost every workout I give you.
00:08:04Sorry, Coach. It's just, we just did these.
00:08:07Well, I think you need them again.
00:08:09Our relay team has a lot of ground to gain if we want to qualify for the regional.
00:08:17I don't like her.
00:08:18Yeah, we can see that. She doesn't know what she's doing.
00:08:21Come on, Leah. She's a good coach and you know that.
00:08:25I'm not a fan.
00:08:27Mrs. Price, you wanted to see me?
00:08:29Yes, Coach Donnelly. Come in. Come in. Take a seat.
00:08:33Oh, how many times have I told you to call me Karen?
00:08:35I lost count. I'm a science teacher, not a math teacher.
00:08:38Oh, funny.
00:08:40So, how you doing?
00:08:41Good. Good. How are you?
00:08:43Well, normally, my job as assistant principal is about putting out fires,
00:08:47but today I have some good news to report.
00:08:51I got approval from the board.
00:08:53Oh, that'll be good.
00:08:54Every other private school in the States had golf for years
00:08:56and we're just now getting around to it,
00:08:58but we finally arrived.
00:09:01And I need a coach. That's where you come in.
00:09:04Now, I know you're a good golfer, so don't try to tell me you're not.
00:09:08I'd like to offer you the job first.
00:09:10The pay's about the same as you get for cross-country,
00:09:12so I know that's not really much incentive.
00:09:14But I'd like to offer you the job first.
00:09:16The pay's about the same as you get for cross-country,
00:09:19so I know that's not really much incentive.
00:09:22But here's the agreement.
00:09:24Thank you so much.
00:09:25I'm honored and flattered and definitely interested.
00:09:30If it's okay with you,
00:09:31I'd like to talk it over with my husband first.
00:09:33Of course. Of course.
00:09:35Take your time.
00:09:36Take the agreement home.
00:09:37Talk it over.
00:09:38Like I said, we're in no hurry.
00:09:39It won't start until next spring.
00:09:41208.5.
00:09:42That's a PR.
00:09:43She bettered her own school record.
00:09:46I was hoping to break 209, and we did it.
00:09:47We did it.
00:09:49I'm very proud of you, young lady.
00:09:51Thanks, coach.
00:09:52That's a great time, Britt.
00:09:53Congratulations.
00:09:54Thanks.
00:09:55And, Coach Donnelly, thank you so much for coming.
00:09:56It really means a lot.
00:09:57I'm happy to be here.
00:09:58I want to thank you, too.
00:09:59I'm glad you could make it.
00:10:00I'm glad I got to meet you.
00:10:01Thank you.
00:10:02I'm glad you got to meet me.
00:10:03Thank you.
00:10:04Thank you.
00:10:05And I'm glad you got to meet me.
00:10:06I'm glad you got to meet me.
00:10:07I'm glad you got to meet me.
00:10:08I'm glad you got to meet me.
00:10:09Oh, I'm happy to be here. I wouldn't have wanted to miss it.
00:10:11Brittany!
00:10:13It's my dad.
00:10:14Go! Go!
00:10:18She's the best female 800 runner I've ever had.
00:10:21I'm really glad for her.
00:10:23Hey, would you mind if I asked a quick question about the race today?
00:10:26Sure, go ahead.
00:10:27I just noticed that she ran her first lap 4.2 seconds faster than her second.
00:10:31Do you think that if she evened out those splits, she could go even faster?
00:10:36I would agree with you, except it's the 800.
00:10:39The 800 is the most unique running event there is.
00:10:42I'm not sure I understand.
00:10:44You're on the 5K in cross-country, right?
00:10:46Right.
00:10:47That's pacing. This is an all-out endurance sprint.
00:10:50Check the world records and the distance events, they're basically all even splits.
00:10:55So I agree with you. This 800, it's different.
00:10:58Almost every world record in that event through the years has been positive splits.
00:11:03Well, she did win. And it was her best time.
00:11:06She did, and it was. And she ran great.
00:11:09Yes, she did. Hey, it was good to see you again.
00:11:12Thank you. Thanks for coming.
00:11:14Glad to be here.
00:11:15We appreciate it.
00:11:25Hey!
00:11:29What's up, guys?
00:11:30We are celebrating.
00:11:31Celebrating what?
00:11:32You got engaged.
00:11:33No, we're not even close.
00:11:35Chris!
00:11:36I mean, we're close. We are so close. Just not yet.
00:11:40We are celebrating a great athletic achievement.
00:11:42We know. Good job, Brittany.
00:11:44Yes, congratulations.
00:11:45You mean good job, Chris, and congratulations? I broke 155 today.
00:11:49Are you kidding? That's nothing. She broke 209 and beat her school record.
00:11:53You're just jealous.
00:11:54Jealous? Why would I be jealous? I beat her by 14 seconds.
00:11:58So my doc says I gotta take an extended rest.
00:12:02He says I gotta take it now.
00:12:04I told her the track season just started.
00:12:06And your assistants finished this out for you?
00:12:08They can keep doing what they're doing and run the team.
00:12:10My graduate assistant can help coordinate the distance runners' workouts,
00:12:14though he doesn't understand the different training I'm giving him.
00:12:17Can you write the workouts for him, then?
00:12:19I did that. I got an idea.
00:12:21What is it?
00:12:22The team is just average, with the exception of Brittany Ward.
00:12:25She's my only athlete that can get to national.
00:12:27She's got a real good chance of making the podium.
00:12:31I'd like to recommend we bring in another coach.
00:12:35All right. Do you have someone in mind?
00:12:37So, Coach Michaels is having trouble with his heart.
00:12:42And his doctor said that he has to stop coaching immediately.
00:12:45I'm sorry.
00:12:46It's okay.
00:12:47He's having trouble with his heart.
00:12:49And his doctor said that he has to stop coaching immediately.
00:12:52I'm sorry to hear that.
00:12:53I know. Me too.
00:12:55He doesn't have an assistant coach to help with the distance runners,
00:12:58and he asked me if I would help out.
00:13:02But, specifically, if I would coach Brittany.
00:13:05Okay, but how are you going to pull that off?
00:13:08He was thinking that I could drive over there three days a week,
00:13:11and on those days, practice could just start later to accommodate my drive.
00:13:14And it would pay, and the school would cover my expenses.
00:13:18He's got that approved by the athletic director.
00:13:21What do you think?
00:13:23I think it's totally up to you.
00:13:25What do you think?
00:13:29In here are all the workouts I've done with Brittany and the other runners so far this spring.
00:13:35And also what I have planned for each of them the rest of the season.
00:13:39Thank you.
00:13:41If you look at everybody's times, you see that Brittany is my only distance runner who can qualify for the regional.
00:13:47That's why I want your help.
00:13:49Even though you don't coach track, you've coached Brittany, and she respects you.
00:13:54I think that's a good fit.
00:13:56I appreciate that.
00:14:00You have any questions?
00:14:03Yes, sir.
00:14:05Coach, I'll leave everybody else the same.
00:14:08But I'd like the liberty to modify some of Brittany's workouts as we get into this, if that's okay with you.
00:14:15It's okay with me.
00:14:18I brought you on board because of what you've accomplished at Orange Hills.
00:14:21Also because of what Brittany told me.
00:14:24I trust you.
00:14:26Thank you.
00:14:28Keisha Thompson set the NCCA record last year in the 800.
00:14:33She ran a 2.046.
00:14:35She runs for Zion College.
00:14:37That's about three hours from here.
00:14:39About two hours from where you live.
00:14:41The regional meet is there this year.
00:14:43And also the national.
00:14:45National moves around to different parts of the country, but this year it's in our region.
00:14:49Zion has a very nice facility.
00:14:52The Henry Hall track and soccer complex.
00:14:55I know Mr. Hall.
00:14:57He's a legendary coach, but he's retired now.
00:15:00He's built a very strong program there.
00:15:02Coach, what do we have to do to qualify?
00:15:07For Brittany to qualify for the national, she has to place in the top four in the regional.
00:15:13She will be ranked second behind Keisha.
00:15:16We have six regions, so that means 24 runners will make it to the national.
00:15:20Gotcha.
00:15:22I've been coaching for 27 years.
00:15:25I've never had an 800-meter runner, male or female, make it to the podium.
00:15:29Male or female, make it to the podium.
00:15:33Brittany is our best chance.
00:15:36I'll do my best to help.
00:15:38Thank you.
00:15:40I've asked the distance runners and the coaches to stay after practice.
00:15:43Let's go meet them.
00:15:51Okay, everybody, listen up.
00:15:53Have your attention, please.
00:15:56This is Coach Donnelly.
00:15:58She coaches cross country at Orange Hills Academy.
00:16:01She was Brittany's coach when she went to school there.
00:16:04Let me introduce you to the staff.
00:16:06This is Coach Simpson.
00:16:08She used to run for me a few years ago.
00:16:10She coaches the sprints, the 400, and the hurdles.
00:16:14Coach Rogers, he's the male counterpart for the same events.
00:16:18He ran for me in the day, too.
00:16:19Coach Maxwell handles all field events, and he's our trainer.
00:16:27And then Jess is my graduate assistant, and he helps with the distance runners.
00:16:32And all of these beautiful young men and women are my distance runners.
00:16:36800 and up.
00:16:38Coach Donnelly is temporarily joining our staff.
00:16:41He's going to drive over here three days a week.
00:16:44And basically, she'll get here when you're done with your training.
00:16:47And she'll get here when you're done with your workouts.
00:16:50Brittany, I want you to wait and work with Coach Donnelly personally on those days.
00:16:55Now, some of you may be thinking that this is a step down,
00:16:59going from a college coach back to a high school coach.
00:17:02I would be thinking the same thing.
00:17:05But I can assure you that you're wrong.
00:17:09Coach Donnelly will have all of the workouts I have planned for you this season.
00:17:14Okay.
00:17:17I'm going to be taking an extended vacation.
00:17:21It doesn't mean I'm going to be relaxing on some beach.
00:17:26I'm going to be resting at home, so you can come and see me anytime.
00:17:31I love each and every one of you.
00:17:34I'm going to miss seeing you every day.
00:17:36Okay.
00:17:46God bless you.
00:17:48That's it. That's it.
00:17:57Hey, Coach.
00:17:59I just wanted to say thank you for everything that you've done for me.
00:18:03You're welcome.
00:18:04Listen, whatever Coach Donnelly tells you to do, you do it. Got it?
00:18:10Yes, sir.
00:18:12And I'm going to work really hard to make that podium this season.
00:18:15And if I do, then we did it.
00:18:18That's right. We did it.
00:18:21God bless you.
00:18:23What do you want, Chris?
00:18:25Coach, I just want to say thanks for everything.
00:18:29Hey.
00:18:31I couldn't help but overhear.
00:18:34What does we did it mean?
00:18:37Well, the first thing Coach Michaels told us as freshmen is whenever we run and accomplish something, it's not I did it, but we did it.
00:18:46Athlete, coach, and the Lord together.
00:18:50He says to never leave the Lord out of anything that you do in your life.
00:18:54So his saying to remind us of that is we did it.
00:18:57That's really nice.
00:19:03Hi.
00:19:05So, what do you say we take a little road trip tomorrow morning?
00:19:10Yeah. What do you have in mind?
00:19:13A track meet.
00:19:15Track meet?
00:19:17Yes, Keisha Thompson has a home meet and I'd really like to watch her run.
00:19:20How far away?
00:19:22Two hours.
00:19:23Two hours?
00:19:26You know, I can't think of anything else I'd rather do on a Saturday morning with my wife.
00:19:47So, why all the way up?
00:19:48Okay, I want to be able to see the 100, 200, and 300 meter mark.
00:19:53Keisha's won the national championship in the 800 meter for three years in a row.
00:19:57Nobody in any of those races has even come in under 210.
00:20:00Meaning?
00:20:02She's had no competition.
00:20:04Okay, once the race starts, I'm going to click my watch on her 100 meter splits. Can you write down the times that you see?
00:20:09Sure.
00:20:11Thank you.
00:20:18Go Keisha! Go Keisha!
00:20:48Go Keisha!
00:20:49Go Keisha!
00:20:50Go Keisha!
00:20:51Go Keisha!
00:21:15So if, if Keisha's four seconds faster than Brittany, how does she ever expect to beat her?
00:21:21In all honesty, she can't. It's too much time to make up.
00:21:24So this was a wasted trip?
00:21:26No, I went in to find out how Keisha ran her race, and now we know she was that fast and then slows down.
00:21:31Well, it didn't look like she was doing much slowing down. I mean, she killed everybody.
00:21:35Her first lap was five and a half seconds faster than her second. And all the other girls slowed down too.
00:21:40Oh, I see.
00:21:42Alright, look at her splits. She gets a little slower every 100 meters. There's got to be a way to beat her.
00:21:47So we drove two hours to watch a two minute race?
00:21:52We drove two hours to watch a 206.3 minute race.
00:21:59Those are cute.
00:22:10Hey, Chris just came in.
00:22:13What's he doing here?
00:22:15Does he know we're here?
00:22:17No.
00:22:19Hey, let's sneak up on him.
00:22:30Hi, I'd like to pick up my shoes. We had to order them.
00:22:33Okay, I'll check.
00:22:35Oh, can I ask you something? Um, I'd like to get a gift for my girlfriend. I wonder if you had any ideas. She runs track for Bethany.
00:22:42Um, I'm not sure. Did you have anything in mind?
00:22:44Um, not really. Maybe a shirt she could wear in practice?
00:22:49Like a training shirt?
00:22:51Yeah, um, do you have a shirt with writing on it that says, I don't know, my boyfriend is the greatest, you know, something humble like that?
00:22:58I don't think we have anything like that.
00:23:01Okay, how about a shirt that says, my love for my boyfriend is 800 meters wide?
00:23:07No, wait, I got it. How about a shirt that says, why aren't you two spying on me?
00:23:15What?
00:23:17What are you up to?
00:23:19I didn't know you were coming in here tonight.
00:23:21Well, I didn't know you were coming. I got a message, my shoes came in.
00:23:23Ah, I see. Actually, she was going to get you something, right, Britt?
00:23:28Uh, yeah.
00:23:30Well, that sounds great. Don't let me stop you, ladies, then.
00:23:33Um, do you have a shirt that says, my girlfriend is the greatest, you know, something humble like that?
00:23:39Hey, whatcha doing?
00:23:42Watching some 800 meter finals from the Olympics and a couple other championships, trying to see how these people run.
00:23:48Picking up on anything?
00:23:50Yeah, Coach Michaels is right. Every single race has been won with positive splits, so the first lap is faster than the second.
00:23:58It's just not the best way to run.
00:24:00I mean, do you know anyone else who thinks the way that you think?
00:24:02Yes. Dave Waddle. He won the 1972 Olympics with even splits. He wasn't the favorite, but he outsmarted the competition.
00:24:10Sounds like you're kind of a runner.
00:24:15There's got to be a better way.
00:24:22Hi, Coach.
00:24:24Hey, Jess. How's it going?
00:24:26It is going. We just finished up 800 meter repeats.
00:24:28Everyone hit the pace that Coach Michaels had written for them, except for Chris.
00:24:31What happened with Chris?
00:24:33He ran them a lot slower than he was supposed to.
00:24:35Do you know why?
00:24:37I do not.
00:24:39Oh, hey, Coach. Coach Michaels left a small present for you on his desk. Be sure to grab it before you leave.
00:24:44A present?
00:24:46Yeah. You'll understand when you see it.
00:24:48Okay, thanks.
00:24:54Hey, Chris. What's up? Are you ready?
00:24:56Hey, Chris. What's up? Are you injured?
00:24:58Oh, you mean my repeats? No, I took it easy because I wanted to run with Brittany and push her along, if that's okay.
00:25:03Sure, that's okay. It's just that Brittany's not doing the workout the way you were supposed to, so...
00:25:08You're kidding.
00:25:10Okay. Brilliant move on my part.
00:25:13You know what? You can run with her. It'll work out.
00:25:18Hey, Coach. I'm all warmed up and ready to go.
00:25:20I'm all warmed up and ready to go.
00:25:22Okay, good. We're doing 800-meter repeats today and I want all of them at 236.
00:25:26236? That's pretty slow.
00:25:29Give me your first lap in 80 seconds, the second in 76.
00:25:33I've never run them like that before.
00:25:35Run them that way a few times and you'll see 236 isn't too slow.
00:25:39Okay, I want even pacing on both of these laps.
00:25:42You're going to have to do 100 meters in 20 seconds, 200 meters in 40 seconds, 300 meters in 60 seconds, 400 meters in 80 seconds.
00:25:51Sounds easy.
00:25:53Yeah, right.
00:25:55When you come through and you start your second lap, you're going to have to tell yourself to pick it up a step.
00:25:58Because then you've got to do 100 meters in 19 seconds.
00:26:01Tell myself to pick it up a step.
00:26:03Got it.
00:26:04Tell myself to pick it up a step.
00:26:06Got it.
00:26:08Coach, how many of these are we going to do?
00:26:1478, 79, 80. Good job. Right on pace. Pick it up a step.
00:26:23So how long have you two been dating?
00:26:25About two years. We started dating end of track season freshman year.
00:26:29And I've been letting her hang around me ever since.
00:26:32I've got to admit, Coach, that workout was different.
00:26:36Yeah, we usually do 800 meter repeats pretty hard.
00:26:39I don't see our running 800s at the pace we did help Brittany get any faster. It was too slow. It didn't make any sense.
00:26:45Well, Chris, if there's anything I've learned since becoming a Christian, it's that there's a lot of things in life that don't make sense.
00:26:52I can think of examples of this from running or Christianity.
00:26:57Alright, I'm all ears.
00:26:58Okay, alright. Running. Take today for example. Brittany ran slower.
00:27:02But look how many 800 meter repeats she was able to do and with limited rest in between.
00:27:07That's what makes the workout effective.
00:27:09She's building strength and endurance and over time, those are the things that make you faster.
00:27:13Okay, I'll buy that. I think.
00:27:17Okay. In Christianity, Jesus said,
00:27:20Whoever will save his life shall lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake shall save it.
00:27:27I've never really understood that verse. What does it mean?
00:27:31It means that in Christianity you win by losing.
00:27:35Win by losing? That doesn't make any sense.
00:27:39I think I get it. As Christians, we surrender our lives to gain His.
00:27:45And with running, you can get faster by training slower. So, win by losing.
00:27:52Yeah, you got it.
00:27:54And now you see why I've been letting her hang around me ever since.
00:28:16Morning, Sharon. I just got off the phone with Coach Michaels.
00:28:21And there's a real good chance that he will not be back in the fall.
00:28:25So, looks like we're going to need to start a search.
00:28:31I'm sorry, Sharon.
00:28:33It's okay.
00:28:35It's okay.
00:28:37It's okay.
00:28:39It's okay.
00:28:41It's okay.
00:28:43Coach Donnelly, you're here early today.
00:28:46Yeah, we're on spring break at Orange Hill, so I can actually get here when you guys do.
00:28:50Coach, I'm Leah.
00:28:52And I'm Tanya.
00:28:53I'm Candace.
00:28:54Nice to meet you guys.
00:28:56We run the 4x4, and we were wondering if you might have any advice on how we could get faster.
00:29:00Oh, well, I'm sure that your coach is doing everything she can to help you run your best.
00:29:04She is. But we see how you're working with Brittany, and it's different than what she normally does.
00:29:09So we were just wondering if maybe you had some advice.
00:29:13I'm sorry, I'm not your coach. You'll just have to ask Coach Simpson.
00:29:17Coach Simpson said it would be okay if we talked to you.
00:29:21Really?
00:29:22Yeah.
00:29:24Um, okay. What times are you guys running right now?
00:29:29My best 400 is 54.8.
00:29:31Janine's run a 58.
00:29:33I've run a 56.4.
00:29:3557.5.
00:29:36Do you remember what your 200 meter split was on that 54.8?
00:29:39I ran 26 seconds for my first 200.
00:29:42Okay, and you came back on almost 29?
00:29:44Right.
00:29:45Try going out at 27 and maintaining that. That'll get you down to 54.
00:29:49Same with you guys, even out your splits.
00:29:51On the 400? You sure?
00:29:53Yeah, try it and see.
00:29:54Okay.
00:29:55In what order are you guys running your event in?
00:29:58I lead off, then Jenny, then Candace, and Leah anchors.
00:30:02Okay, so you're starting with your second fastest runner, handing off to your two slowest, and then finishing off with your fastest?
00:30:11Right. Coach likes to get a good start.
00:30:13Okay, well I would try starting with Jenny, handing off to Candace, then Tanya, then Leah.
00:30:18Why in that order?
00:30:20Because you want to get faster each time you hand off the baton.
00:30:23Oh, okay.
00:30:25Well, thanks. We'll try that.
00:30:32Hey, Coach.
00:30:33Hey.
00:30:43Coach Donnelly, do you have a moment?
00:30:45Sure.
00:30:47Um, look.
00:30:49We appreciate you helping Coach Michaels with his distance runners, but I don't need any help with mine.
00:30:56What are you talking about?
00:30:57Well, quite frankly, I don't appreciate you coming to my relay team, changing up their order, and then telling them to go out slower for even splits.
00:31:07It's a 400-meter run. It's not a 5K cross-country race.
00:31:11Coach Simpson, they—
00:31:13Plus, we don't need a high school coach coming in here and making it seem like we don't know how to train our athletes.
00:31:17That's very embarrassing.
00:31:20Do you understand?
00:31:23Yeah. Yeah, of course.
00:31:25Yeah, of course.
00:31:27Thank you.
00:31:42Why'd you do that today?
00:31:44Do what?
00:31:46Tell Coach Donnelly that Coach Simpson said it was okay.
00:31:48Because I don't like Coach Simpson?
00:31:50That doesn't make it all right, saying what you said.
00:31:52It's no big deal.
00:31:53Leah, come on, girl.
00:31:55Come on, girl, what?
00:31:57Tell the truth. Don't tell lies.
00:31:59I didn't lie.
00:32:01No? So what was it you said to Coach Donnelly?
00:32:04I didn't lie. I told you I don't like Coach Simpson, and that's the truth.
00:32:08So the gun sounds, and I decide to go right for the lead.
00:32:11And my reasoning is that both Strong and Wyckoff are in the race, and those guys are better than me.
00:32:14So I thought, let me grab the lead, and maybe I can hold them off.
00:32:17Wrong.
00:32:18I hit a wall after 500 meters and ended up finishing dead last. I should have been no worse than third.
00:32:25Yeah, well, Chris, that's what happens when you try and run somebody else's race.
00:32:30What do you mean?
00:32:32Well, I would know because I did the same thing.
00:32:34When I was 13, I played golf, and I entered into a youth tournament on my home course.
00:32:39Kids from all the surrounding counties came in. I was put in the top foursome and ranked number one.
00:32:43Go out on the first hole, three other girls go before me, and I'll hit great drives.
00:32:48So I start getting worried. I go out, and on my first shot, I drive it 20 yards.
00:32:53Yeah. I dub my next two shots and ended up with, like, a nine on the first hole.
00:32:58I lost that tournament by 12 strokes, even though I was ranked first.
00:33:02And I went back the next year when I was 14.
00:33:05I let it wire to wire and ended up winning by three strokes.
00:33:08The difference was that when I was 13, I was looking at everybody else and worried what they were doing.
00:33:15The next year, I focused on my game.
00:33:18So you gotta do that. Focus on your race. You do what you do best.
00:33:22You can't expect to win by running someone else's race.
00:33:25Well, I finished last, so I can attest to that.
00:33:29Alright, you guys, Jess has your workouts.
00:33:32Hey, Brittany, I'm not gonna be here Friday, so can you meet Saturday instead?
00:33:38Yeah, sure.
00:33:40Okay, good. We're gonna take a little drive and do a really important workout.
00:33:44Sounds good.
00:33:46I know you recognize this place.
00:33:48Yeah, it's where I ran the state cross-country meet.
00:33:50That's right. They've got something here that's hard to find.
00:33:53It wasn't a part of your course, but it is right next to it.
00:34:02Alright, that's 400 meters right there.
00:34:04You see where I marked 100 meters, 200, 300, and now 400 meters.
00:34:10Right.
00:34:12Alright, let's go back to the start and talk about how you're gonna run this thing.
00:34:19Now, what's special about this course is that it's slightly uphill the entire way.
00:34:24Each time you pass the flag, I need you to tell yourself to speed it up a little, okay?
00:34:28First 100 meters, run at about 20%.
00:34:31Your second, you're gonna pick it up to 40%.
00:34:32Third, ramp it up to 60% and finish your last one at 80%.
00:34:37You don't have to run all out, okay?
00:34:39The main thing is, each time you pass the flag, you have to tell yourself to pick it up a step, okay?
00:34:44Got it.
00:34:46I'm gonna go about halfway from there. I can get your 100, 200, and 300 splits.
00:34:49But when you run across at the 400, throw your arms up so I know you're done.
00:34:52You're gonna walk back to recover, and you're gonna go again.
00:34:55Got it. Coach, how many of these are we gonna do?
00:35:02Three.
00:35:18Alright, way to go, girl. Pick it up to 60%.
00:35:32Good job.
00:35:46Hello, this is John Duncan, the Athletic Director at Bethany University.
00:35:50Yes, sir. Karen Price, Assistant Principal, Orange Hills Academy.
00:35:54Well, it seems we have one of your coaches helping us out over here this spring.
00:35:57Yes, I heard. Coach Donnelly.
00:35:59Yeah, I'd like to ask you about her for a moment, if I may.
00:36:02Sure. How can I help?
00:36:04Well, I'd like to know if you could give her a recommendation.
00:36:07Can I recommend Coach Donnelly?
00:36:09Yes, ma'am.
00:36:11Oh, Mr. Duncan, I've been an administrator for 14 years in three different schools, both public and private.
00:36:17And Coach Donnelly is as fine as they come.
00:36:20Oh, that's high praise. I'm glad to hear that.
00:36:24May I ask what this is about?
00:36:26It looks like our cross-country coach is going on an extended leave, so we're starting to look for somebody to take his place.
00:36:33I see.
00:36:35I'm aware that Coach Donnelly has her master's degree.
00:36:37Yes, she does.
00:36:39Well, I appreciate the good word about her. Thank you for your time.
00:36:41Yes, sir.
00:36:43Goodbye.
00:36:45The green now drops back. Coming on a bit is Vorgo, our native on the outside.
00:36:50Now under the stretch, it's Secretariat. Secretariat on the outside to take the lead.
00:36:55Sham holding in second. It's Secretariat moving away. He has it by two-and-a-half.
00:37:00Sham, then on the outside, our native.
00:37:03At the wire, it's going to be Secretariat. He wins it by two-and-a-half.
00:37:14I just saw a perfect race.
00:37:16Your best time is 3.9 seconds behind Keisha's. Now, in an 800-meter race, that's a long way.
00:37:23Yeah, I know.
00:37:25So we've got two tasks. One, we've got to get you two to three seconds faster. Two, we've got to get Keisha one to two seconds slower.
00:37:32What?
00:37:34Our first task is to get you faster. We're going to change the way you run your race.
00:37:37You're not going to be going out fast and then slowing down in your second lap the way that you're used to.
00:37:41You're actually going to be doing the exact opposite.
00:37:44Secretariat is the horse that won the 1973 Kentucky Derby in record time.
00:37:48The race is a mile and a quarter long, and each quarter mile, he got faster than the one before.
00:37:54These are splits.
00:37:56The science behind running says you maximize your ability with a 51 to 49 percent split,
00:38:00meaning starting out slower and getting slightly faster as you go.
00:38:04It's exactly what Secretariat did. It's exactly what you're going to do.
00:38:08All right, I want you to run your first hundred meters in 16 seconds with three tenths of a second on either side.
00:38:15Now, it may take a few times to get the pacing down, so let's try a few. Start in lane two for me.
00:38:24Set.
00:38:38Set.
00:38:45All right, 15 seconds. Let's try it again.
00:39:0017 seconds. Try again.
00:39:0816.8.
00:39:1616.7.
00:39:2815.3.
00:39:31Coach, I can't do it. It's too hard.
00:39:39Brittany, do you remember the story in the Bible about the rich young ruler who asked Jesus what he had to do to have eternal life?
00:39:47Yeah.
00:39:49That story kind of asks the ultimate question, right? What do you have to do to have eternal life?
00:39:53And you'll remember in the story, it says that he asked Jesus, and Jesus told him.
00:39:59He didn't like the answer, so he walked away, and the Bible said that he was sorrowful.
00:40:04Think about that. Here is somebody asking how to have eternal life.
00:40:10He was standing there staring right at it, and he walked away.
00:40:15Why?
00:40:18Because he didn't want it bad enough.
00:40:22You want to try this again?
00:40:3415.5.
00:40:4216.5.
00:41:0016 seconds.
00:41:0317.
00:41:19I hate your favorite thing to do as of late.
00:41:22I know. I'm sorry.
00:41:24I found Keisha's championship race from two years ago and the one from last year, and she ran them both exactly the same way.
00:41:30There was nobody near her. They were easy wins.
00:41:33And she's the one you need to slow down.
00:41:35Right.
00:41:37You know, I've never heard of a runner intentionally slow down so that a slower one can beat her. Have you?
00:41:42No.
00:41:44So how do you intend on beating her then?
00:41:48I have an idea.
00:41:55The last two years we ran together every day in practice.
00:41:57Now I hardly see you.
00:41:59Coach only said you can come to my practices.
00:42:02Yeah, but I gotta run with the guys.
00:42:05I don't know why Coach Michaels brought her on anyway.
00:42:08You could just run with us.
00:42:10I'm just saying.
00:42:14What's wrong?
00:42:16Nothing.
00:42:18I just don't understand why you get your own personal trainer.
00:42:21It's like we don't matter.
00:42:23That's not true and you know it.
00:42:24Oh, how come I don't get my own personal trainer then?
00:42:27I'll tell you why.
00:42:29Because I'm not going to regionals or nationals. That's why.
00:42:33Chris, Coach Donnelly is my high school cross country coach.
00:42:37She's the one who convinced me to go out for track in the first place.
00:42:40I wasn't going to.
00:42:44If I didn't have track, I wouldn't have you.
00:42:51Yeah.
00:42:54That was hard.
00:42:56Really? I thought the test was easy. I bet I aced it.
00:42:58Yeah, right.
00:43:00No, really. I bet I got every question right.
00:43:02How'd you know all that?
00:43:04I studied.
00:43:06There's no way you knew all of that.
00:43:08Okay, look. She gave the same test yesterday.
00:43:10So?
00:43:12So one of my friends snubbed a picture.
00:43:14You cheated?
00:43:16No. I had advanced information.
00:43:1832.1. Good job. I want five in a row just like that.
00:43:21Five?
00:43:23Yeah. Make sure they're all within four-tenths of a second on either side.
00:43:25You've got to get the pacing down.
00:43:27Coach, I can't run five 200s in a row at 32 seconds.
00:43:31Yes, you can. And we're going to stay here until you do.
00:43:3633. Try again.
00:43:4032.9. Half a second off.
00:43:4832.2. Great job. Four in a row. One more.
00:43:51Coach, I can't. I'm too tired.
00:43:54Yes, you can.
00:43:56No. I can't. There's too many.
00:43:59Brittany, this is exactly how you're going to feel in the final 200 meters at Nationals.
00:44:03You're going to be this tired.
00:44:05So what are you going to do? Are you going to stop?
00:44:07No.
00:44:09You're going to stop?
00:44:11No.
00:44:13You're going to stop?
00:44:15No.
00:44:17You're going to keep going?
00:44:43What was my time?
00:44:45Most athletes would have given up a half hour ago.
00:44:48Did I get it?
00:44:50Most athletes would have quit.
00:44:52What was my time?
00:44:5431.9.
00:44:57There's an inner satisfaction that comes when you work hard, when you don't give up, and when you give it your best.
00:45:03And I'm really proud of you. Good job.
00:45:05Thanks.
00:45:07All right. Take tomorrow off. I'm not going to see you Friday, but I want you to get a workout in, okay?
00:45:10I want you to do 10 100 meters in a row at 16 seconds. You've got to get the pacing down.
00:45:16Okay.
00:45:18Have Chris time you. Text me when you've done it.
00:45:20All right.
00:45:22Hey, you did it.
00:45:24We did it.
00:45:26Hey.
00:45:28Hey. So I got a call from the athletic director at Bethany this afternoon, and they're looking for somebody to coach cross-country this fall.
00:45:35And they need a distance coach for track in the spring. They've got a science position available.
00:45:40You're serious.
00:45:42Yeah. And he asked me if I was interested.
00:45:45Just like that?
00:45:47Just like that.
00:45:49So what did you tell him?
00:45:51Well, I told him I had to talk to you about it first.
00:45:53Wow. I just didn't expect it.
00:45:56Yeah.
00:45:58Okay. So what do you think?
00:45:59Well, my first thought was that Coach Michaels is either retiring or that his condition's more serious than he's letting on.
00:46:08And I'm flattered. I just, I don't know, Michael. I don't know.
00:46:14My girlfriend, she's trained to run like a horse. We're all practicing to run, and she's learning to gallop.
00:46:19Can you stop?
00:46:21I'm just kidding.
00:46:23Well, that's not funny.
00:46:25You know that horse set a record in 1973 that still stands today?
00:46:29Can't think of a runner that's done that.
00:46:46Hey.
00:46:48Hey.
00:46:50You okay?
00:46:52Yeah.
00:46:54I just hate it when he makes fun of me.
00:46:59He does that a lot.
00:47:04When I was a freshman in college, I dated a guy that made jokes about me like that, and I hated it, too.
00:47:11We were together for six months before we split up.
00:47:15And when I was a sophomore, I started dating Michael.
00:47:18And he's never made fun of me or embarrassed me, not once.
00:47:24I'm really glad I'm married to Michael.
00:47:31Why does he do that?
00:47:33He's jealous. And joking like that is his way of covering up his own insecurity and hurt.
00:47:41Britt, he may say that he loves you.
00:47:44I just think he probably has a little bit to learn about what real love and commitment are all about.
00:47:49What makes you say that?
00:47:51Well, the Bible says love isn't envious.
00:47:55So, you should be happy for somebody's success and not jealous of it when you really love them.
00:48:03Well, I guess that's true.
00:48:05And not jealous of it when you really love them.
00:48:10Well, then how will I know when he really loves me?
00:48:19You'll know.
00:48:22We can start whenever you're ready, okay?
00:48:32Not tonight. I just got in and I have a lot of homework.
00:48:36No, I don't want you to help me study.
00:48:42Look, I just need to get a shower and get to work, okay?
00:48:47Um, no. No, I'm just going to eat something here.
00:48:56I just don't feel like talking right now, okay?
00:49:01I need to go.
00:49:05Chris, I need to go.
00:49:11Bye.
00:49:21You're going to run your first 200 meters in 32 seconds, the second in 31.5, the third in 31, and your final 200 meters in 30 seconds.
00:49:29You do that, you run a 2 of 4.5.
00:49:32That would beat her record by a tenth of a second.
00:49:33Yeah, but I'm not trying to beat her record. I'm just trying to give you a chance to win the race.
00:49:38Today we're going to work on your first 400 meters, so let's go to work.
00:49:49Would you like something to drink?
00:49:51I'm okay. Thank you so much. I was just going to stop by for a minute.
00:49:54Okay. Thank you.
00:49:56Hey, Coach Darling. Forgive me for not getting up. Please come on in and sit down.
00:50:03I thought I might stop by to give you an update on how Brittany was doing. But first, how are you doing?
00:50:09Well, not doing too good. Doc says I'm going to need surgery.
00:50:15I'm sorry.
00:50:17Me too.
00:50:21So how are things going?
00:50:23Brittany's doing well. We're working on strength right now with some hill workouts. She's learning pacing.
00:50:28It's not easy, but you know she's a hard worker. I think the combination of things that we're doing is going to give her a good chance.
00:50:36Give her a good chance?
00:50:39To beat Keisha.
00:50:42Nobody's expecting a miracle. I just wanted to make the podium.
00:50:48I do too, sir. I'm just aiming for that top spot.
00:50:53I just wanted to stop by for a minute. I still got to make the long trip home, but we'll be praying for you.
00:51:01And I'm not just saying that. My husband and I, we have been praying for you.
00:51:06Thank you.
00:51:12Thank you very much.
00:51:14Hey, Coach. Mind if I ask you? You've been a Christian long?
00:51:19Yes, sir. Since I was a junior in high school.
00:51:23You take Christianity very seriously, don't you?
00:51:26Yes, sir. I do.
00:51:29Do you ever think about death?
00:51:33Occasionally.
00:51:35I've been thinking about it quite a bit lately.
00:51:37And even though I'm a Christian, death is something I'm not looking forward to.
00:51:45I understand.
00:51:47What do you believe, Coach?
00:51:51What do I believe?
00:51:53About life and death.
00:51:57God.
00:51:59Life and death?
00:52:01Yes.
00:52:02What do you believe about life and death?
00:52:06God.
00:52:10Well, I believe that the God of the Bible created me.
00:52:15And I was born a sinner.
00:52:18And that means one day I'll die.
00:52:23I also believe that Jesus is God.
00:52:27That he came to earth.
00:52:29He died on the cross for our sins.
00:52:33He rose and he's seated at the right hand of the Father and he'll return one day.
00:52:39I believe that faith in Christ is the only way to go to heaven.
00:52:46I believe that there's nothing, nothing more important than following him in this life.
00:52:54That is very well said, young lady.
00:52:59Thank you.
00:53:02Thanks for coming by.
00:53:04I hope you get better, sir.
00:53:06Thank you for helping with Brittany.
00:53:08You're welcome.
00:53:15Coach.
00:53:18I think she can beat her.
00:53:30Can I ask you a question?
00:53:33You just did.
00:53:36Still not talking to Chris?
00:53:40I'm taking a break from Chris.
00:53:43Why?
00:53:45Why do you ask?
00:53:47Because he keeps asking me what's wrong.
00:53:51I told him we needed a break from each other.
00:53:54Yeah, but he doesn't know why.
00:53:59That's for him to figure out.
00:54:09133.8. Okay, good job.
00:54:12It's half a second faster than you want to be, but you still got something left, right?
00:54:15Yeah.
00:54:17Good. This is where those hill workouts are going to come in handy.
00:54:19I know you might not like doing them, but the final 200 meters of the race, you're going to be glad you did.
00:54:23Okay.
00:54:25Take a full recovery. We're going to go again, 600 meters and 134.5 this time.
00:54:29Yeah, I think I've only got a couple jumpers that are going to the regionals this year.
00:54:33That's about it.
00:54:35Show workout today, Brittany?
00:54:37Yeah, just three 600s, but all at race pace.
00:54:40You got your first crack at Keisha coming up in the regionals.
00:54:43Think you can catch her?
00:54:45I don't know.
00:54:46She's pretty far ahead of me.
00:54:48We'll be pulling for you.
00:54:50Thanks.
00:54:52I hear you've been working the hills.
00:54:54Yeah, Coach Donnelly's pretty big on that.
00:54:56Good for you. Help build some strength.
00:54:58She's trying to get me a couple of seconds faster.
00:55:00That would still leave a couple of seconds to gain, though, wouldn't it?
00:55:04Well, yeah, but Coach Donnelly said she's going to try and slow Keisha down.
00:55:09Wait, what was that?
00:55:11She's going to try and slow Keisha down.
00:55:12I don't know how or what she means by that.
00:55:18Well, see ya.
00:55:20Bye, Brittany.
00:55:22Bye.
00:55:25Slow down a runner?
00:55:28Beats me.
00:55:43Okay.
00:55:48See ya.
00:55:51See ya, guys.
00:55:53See ya, Jess.
00:56:00Coach Donnelly, we were just talking with Brittany and she mentioned you had a plan to slow down a runner?
00:56:06I've been around track a long time and never heard a coach say they could do something like that.
00:56:10Especially somebody like Keisha Thompson.
00:56:12You do know she's a three-time champ?
00:56:14I'm well aware of her success, yes.
00:56:16I saw Keisha run the final last year.
00:56:19She'd have to trip and fall before anybody would have a chance to beat her.
00:56:22Is that what you have in mind?
00:56:24No.
00:56:26Okay. Well, I didn't know because I've been to some high school meets and stranger things have happened.
00:56:32Well, I can assure you the thought never crossed my mind.
00:56:36Please, don't do anything to disgrace the name of this school.
00:56:42Okay.
00:56:48Slow down a runner?
00:56:50What's Keisha gonna do?
00:56:52Run right up to the finish line, stop just before crossing and go,
00:56:55Come on, Brittany, it's all yours.
00:57:05No, she hasn't said anything yet, but I don't believe for a moment she's going to turn it down.
00:57:09She'll get to coach at the college level, teach a couple of entry-level courses and her pay will double?
00:57:15Well, maybe not double, but it'll surely go up.
00:57:19You could always match funds with some of your principal's salary and keep her here.
00:57:24Oh, here's the clincher.
00:57:26Her husband's an accountant and their firm has two offices.
00:57:29Guess where the other one is?
00:57:33We're going to need to look for a new science teacher, a new cross-country coach and a golf coach.
00:57:39Donnelly is not going to be here in the fall.
00:57:42Yeah, I'll be sorry to see her go too.
00:57:49Nice job, ladies.
00:57:55How's it going?
00:57:57It's not.
00:57:59Got one meet left to qualify for regionals.
00:58:01My relay team has a lot of time to make up if we want to get in.
00:58:04How much?
00:58:06A little over three seconds.
00:58:07Yeah, right now I've got Leah going in the Open 400, but she's my only runner.
00:58:12Relay team's a long shot.
00:58:14Can Leah make the national?
00:58:16No, no, not a chance. At least she's going to regional.
00:58:19I can't seem to get these girls to go any faster or put together four good legs.
00:58:23Well, why don't you try a couple of different things then?
00:58:26Oh, grad assistant has some advice. That should be good.
00:58:30Have you considered having your girls go out slower the first 200 so that they can come back faster?
00:58:34Even splits for a 400 meter run?
00:58:37Yeah, something like that. And change up the order of who leads off.
00:58:41Start with your slowest runner and always hand off to a faster runner.
00:58:44You sound just like that high school coach.
00:58:46That's where he got it from.
00:58:48What did she do? Talk to everybody about my relay team?
00:58:50She didn't talk to me.
00:58:52Well, how do you know what you just said then?
00:58:54Your girls went up to her and asked her if she had any advice for them.
00:58:57Wait, what? My girls asked her?
00:59:00Yeah.
00:59:02How do you know that?
00:59:04Because it happened.
00:59:06Wait, so they asked for her advice on what exactly?
00:59:09How they could get faster.
00:59:11And Coach Donnelly told them?
00:59:13Not at first.
00:59:15What do you mean, not at first? Explain.
00:59:17She won't answer the phone. When I see her on campus, she says she doesn't want to talk.
00:59:20What's going on?
00:59:22I don't know.
00:59:24But you're her roommate. You must know something.
00:59:26Well, I'm sorry, I don't.
00:59:28Something happened I don't know about.
00:59:30Could be.
00:59:31I never knew how much I really cared for her.
00:59:34Well, you should tell her that.
00:59:36How? She won't talk to me.
01:00:02Coach Donnelly, can I talk to you for a minute?
01:00:05Sure.
01:00:08Is everything okay?
01:00:12When we talked to you a while ago about our relay team,
01:00:17Leah told you that Coach Simpson said it was okay, but Coach Simpson didn't know anything about it.
01:00:23And I've felt guilty ever since.
01:00:26And I wanted to come to you sooner, but...
01:00:27I'm sorry.
01:00:29Thank you for telling me.
01:00:31Coach, Leah... Leah's not doing so good.
01:00:34What do you mean?
01:00:36Well, she lies.
01:00:38She cheats in school, and she doesn't seem to have any conviction about anything.
01:00:43And I'm scared that she's not a real Christian.
01:00:48Why'd she come to school here, then?
01:00:50She has a partial scholarship, and her father went to college.
01:00:53Why'd she come to school here, then?
01:00:55She has a partial scholarship, and her father went here.
01:00:58He's a pastor.
01:01:02And you're not sure she's a believer?
01:01:05She's heard it her whole life, but I'm not sure she's ever really heard it.
01:01:10I see.
01:01:12I'm sorry that we lied to you, and I went along with it.
01:01:16But I'm a Christian, Coach. I struggle with things, but I'm a Christian.
01:01:20Leah's my friend. She just needs help.
01:01:26Well, Tonya, thank you for coming to me.
01:01:33So, we can transition over to the new office whenever we're ready.
01:01:39It's totally up to us.
01:01:41Wow, that's good to know.
01:01:43Yeah. Seems like everything's falling into place.
01:01:46Yeah, it really does.
01:01:47So? The decision's all yours.
01:01:50No. The decision's ours.
01:01:53No. It doesn't matter to me either way. I can stay here or go there.
01:01:58I mean, this decision's all up to you, Ms. Courtney Smith.
01:02:09Hey, Jess. How'd it go today?
01:02:11It didn't. No one ran.
01:02:13How come?
01:02:15We don't run when it's raining hard.
01:02:17Is Brittany here?
01:02:19Yeah, she's in there.
01:02:26Coach, I didn't think you'd be coming today.
01:02:29You do know they run track meets in the rain, right?
01:02:31Well, yeah, but it's raining pretty hard. Coach Michaels doesn't make us practice when it rains.
01:02:47Yeah.
01:02:55Yeah, I don't know if you made a sense of that.
01:02:59Hey, Coach. Does your high school team run in the rain like that?
01:03:03Yeah. As long as it's not lightning, we run.
01:03:06But why?
01:03:08Because we're runners and that's what we do. I mean, nationals could be in the rain.
01:03:12It was boring. That's ridiculous. Why would you run in the rain?
01:03:15Do you really want to know?
01:03:17Sure.
01:03:19Seriously, Chris, do you really want to know?
01:03:22Yeah. Sure.
01:03:27Can I ask you, are your parents together or divorced?
01:03:31They're together.
01:03:33Anybody else here have parents that are divorced? Raise your hand.
01:03:38Yeah. Mine too.
01:03:41Anybody here with their hand up wish that never would have happened?
01:03:48Look, chances are you're all going to get married someday.
01:03:52You'll pledge to make a commitment for life and there will come a day in your marriage that you experience rain.
01:03:59You're going to have a really big decision to make.
01:04:02You can choose to do the easy thing like our parents did and get divorced.
01:04:08Or you could choose to stay together in the rain.
01:04:12Chris, it's really easy to run when the weather's nice.
01:04:16It's easy to follow the Lord when everything's good.
01:04:19What about when it's not?
01:04:21It's not fun to run in the rain.
01:04:24And it's not easy to follow the Lord when nothing's going right and you're wondering where God is.
01:04:31But regardless of the conditions, you still run.
01:04:36And regardless of the circumstances, you still follow.
01:04:40That's why we run in the rain.
01:04:45Brittany, good job today. I'll see you next week.
01:05:15I'll see you next week.
01:05:45I'll see you next week.
01:06:16Where are you going?
01:06:18To see Chris.
01:06:33Okay, your surgery is scheduled for Saturday the 18th.
01:06:36Here's some information for you.
01:06:38I want you to come in a couple days early so plan on being here on the 16th.
01:06:41Saturday is the day of the national.
01:06:42Saturday is the day of the national.
01:06:45What time is the surgery?
01:06:46Two o'clock.
01:06:48One of my runners should be in the 800 meter final then.
01:06:53They're going to run her race at 2.30. I want you to listen to it over the phone.
01:06:56Sorry, coach.
01:06:58Can't you push it to another day or time?
01:07:00Jeff, the line waiting to get the table at this hospital is 800 meters long.
01:07:06I'd rather listen to the race.
01:07:08And I would rather not have to perform this surgery.
01:07:12Can we do it in the morning?
01:07:14I play golf on Saturday mornings.
01:07:17Didn't I tell you golf is the most frustrating game ever invented?
01:07:20You better hope I have a good round so I don't take my frustration out on you.
01:07:37Hey.
01:07:39May I speak with you a moment?
01:07:42Sure.
01:07:45I owe you a little apology.
01:07:49There's been a misunderstanding.
01:07:51I'm sorry for the way I spoke to you before.
01:07:54I thought you had approached my girls and given them advice on how to run.
01:07:58I did not know that they approached you and told you I said it was alright to share your thoughts.
01:08:04They were wrong to say that.
01:08:06I apologize for my hasty response.
01:08:08No apology necessary.
01:08:12Leah and I have had a little tension all year.
01:08:16I understand. I have been there before.
01:08:20Thanks.
01:08:22Yeah.
01:08:25They missed qualifying for regionals by nine-tenths of a second.
01:08:29They all tried to run even splits and each ran their best time.
01:08:32And I like the idea of getting faster each time you hand off the baton.
01:08:37All four girls are back next year and they're pretty pumped.
01:08:40That's great. I'm really happy for you guys.
01:08:45Good luck with Brittany in the regional.
01:08:47Thanks.
01:09:03Hey.
01:09:05Hey.
01:09:07Hardly anybody around. Did you just finish your workout?
01:09:10Yeah.
01:09:12Ready for the regional?
01:09:14Yeah, I guess, but I don't stand a chance at nationals.
01:09:17Sure you do.
01:09:19No, I don't.
01:09:21The only girls that don't stand a chance at nationals are the ones that didn't qualify.
01:09:26I ranked seventh out of eight and only the top four get in.
01:09:28Okay, but what if three of those girls got disqualified? What if they cheated?
01:09:33Cheated?
01:09:35Yeah, you know, steroids, doping.
01:09:38It wouldn't surprise me if some of them are.
01:09:40Or what if some of their coaches submitted faster times than they actually ran?
01:09:47That'd be wrong.
01:09:49The cheating or the lying?
01:09:53Both.
01:09:55Yeah.
01:09:57Yeah.
01:09:59That reminds me, in my class I have this thing that I say to my students before every test.
01:10:04I say, get it wrong before you cheat.
01:10:07You know, that way you can feel good about yourself.
01:10:11Sleep at night.
01:10:13It's my only rule.
01:10:15Get it wrong before you cheat.
01:10:17That's a good rule.
01:10:19Yeah.
01:10:26What year are you?
01:10:28Junior.
01:10:36Bethany University and Orange Hills Academy where I teach, they exist for the same purpose.
01:10:41That's to teach people about Christ.
01:10:45We've all lied. We've all cheated.
01:10:48I know I have it in my life.
01:10:51That's why we need Christ.
01:10:52When I was a junior in high school, this girl told me that Jesus died for all my sins.
01:11:01She led me to Christ.
01:11:23Coach, do you have a minute?
01:11:26Sure.
01:11:31Leah, you okay?
01:11:34Coach, I owe you an apology.
01:11:38You and like half of the people on campus.
01:11:53Brittany.
01:11:58I'm so nervous.
01:12:00I understand.
01:12:02You're not going to run your race today the way we've been training for it.
01:12:06What?
01:12:08Keisha's going to go out for the lead.
01:12:10And I want you to go with her.
01:12:12Stay right on her shoulder for 600 meters and then slow down and make sure you finish in the top four.
01:12:17Okay.
01:12:18Stay right on her shoulder for 600 meters and then slow down and make sure you finish in the top four.
01:12:22Wait, why do you want me to do that?
01:12:24Stay with Keisha for 600 meters. Slow down. Make sure you finish in the top four.
01:12:28I'll see you at the end of the race.
01:12:30Coach.
01:12:31Hey, you win by losing, right?
01:12:38Ladies, move up to the line.
01:12:41Get after it, Brittany. You can get her.
01:12:43Good luck, Brittany!
01:12:45Let's go, Brittany!
01:12:46All right, Jasmine!
01:12:50Let's go, Brittany!
01:12:51Come on, Brittany!
01:12:53Come on, Keisha!
01:12:54Come on, Keisha!
01:12:55Come on, Keith!
01:12:57Runners set.
01:13:16Come on, Keisha!
01:13:47Stay with her, Brittany! Stay with her! You're right there! Keep it up! Keep it up!
01:13:51Looking good, Keisha! Looking good!
01:13:53Good job, Keisha!
01:13:54Great job, Brittany! Stay with her! Go, Brittany!
01:13:56Good job! Go, Brittany!
01:14:09Where'd the girl in blue come from?
01:14:11I was just thinking the same thing.
01:14:17What's wrong with her?
01:14:19What is she doing?
01:14:20Why is she slowing down? Is she hurt?
01:14:28Come on, Brittany!
01:14:35Come on, Brittany!
01:14:37Come on, Brittany!
01:14:39Come on, Brittany!
01:14:41Come on, Brittany!
01:14:43Come on, Brittany!
01:14:45Come on, Brittany! Stay with her!
01:14:56You gotta be top four, Brittany!
01:14:58Come on! Go, Brittany!
01:14:59Push through!
01:15:15Coach Dunn, any idea why that runner pulled up?
01:15:19Why? Are you afraid somebody might beat your girl?
01:15:22No, I'm just wondering why she slowed down. I mean, she looked great up to that point.
01:15:25I mean, you know how these coaches are. They tell their runners to start out with the leader and try to stay with them.
01:15:29Well, she did. For about 600 meters.
01:15:32Yeah, but Michaels is her coach and I've never seen him coach a runner like that.
01:15:36No, Michaels ain't coaching. He had to take some time off having some heart trouble.
01:15:40Oh, wow. I'm sorry to hear that.
01:15:42I'm sorry to hear that. So who's coaching her?
01:15:45Some high school coach. I can't remember her name, but I've seen her at some of the cross-country meets when I've been recruiting.
01:15:50Something doesn't seem right.
01:15:52What do you mean?
01:15:53Well, I mean, she deliberately slowed down.
01:15:55Well, if you're worried, and you shouldn't be, in two weeks when you run the national, just tell Keisha not to go out so fast.
01:16:02And to stay with her. And then, in the last 100 meters, Keisha kicks it in and blows her away.
01:16:08You got nothing to worry about.
01:16:09You got nothing to worry about.
01:16:11Brittany, why did you slow down?
01:16:14Coach told me to.
01:16:15Why did you have her slow down? She was right with her.
01:16:17Dad, the goal wasn't to try and beat her today.
01:16:20But that's the way she needs to run. Just go out and stay with her. See if you can beat her in the end.
01:16:24Brittany can't win if she runs that way.
01:16:26But she was right with her for 600 meters. If she gets a little more training in, she might be able to.
01:16:31I'm sorry, sir. It doesn't quite work that way.
01:16:33Okay, Coach. If. And this is a big if. Brittany can run a 2.06. How does Keisha Thompson run a 2.06?
01:16:41If Keisha goes out slower than she normally does, then Brittany has a chance.
01:16:44Wait. I don't understand. Please explain.
01:16:47Keisha usually goes out in 60 seconds. Finishes the second lap in 65. So, if she goes out slower than she used to, then Brittany has a chance.
01:16:54How do you figure?
01:16:55Because Keisha's body is used to going out fast and then slowing down. And if she goes out at a slower pace, it's gonna do the same thing.
01:17:01What?
01:17:02If Keisha goes out slower, it's gonna be easy for her to maintain that pace.
01:17:05Yeah. And then she'll just turn on the jets and blow Brittany away down the stretch.
01:17:09I'm sorry. I mean no disrespect, you guys. I really don't. But I think that you're mistaken.
01:17:14Keisha's body isn't used to that. She hasn't trained that way. She's gonna go out. She's gonna slow down like she always does.
01:17:20And she's not gonna be able to turn on the jets like you guys think.
01:17:23Coach Donnelly, I appreciate all you've done for Brittany. I really do. But I have to agree with the coaches here.
01:17:29Brittany needs to do what she just did. Go out hard after Keisha and try to hang on and see if she can beat her in the end.
01:17:35What makes you think her coach is stupid enough to slow her down?
01:17:38Yeah. Why would he ever do that?
01:17:40Brittany can't win by running Keisha's race. She needs to run the way that we've been training.
01:17:44You did a great job today, Brittany.
01:17:46Okay. See you Tuesday.
01:17:49Excuse me.
01:17:54Brittany, what did she tell you to do?
01:17:56Stay with Keisha for 600 meters and finish in the top four.
01:17:59Why'd she slow you down?
01:18:01I don't know. She didn't say.
01:18:06Doesn't make any sense.
01:18:08Wait till Michael hears about this.
01:18:27Hey.
01:18:46Hey, Jess.
01:18:47Hey, Coach. The lineup for the heats came in today. Keisha's in heat one, Brittany heat two.
01:18:51Okay. What are the top qualifying times in Britt's race?
01:18:54One of the girls has run a 2.11.8. Two are over 2.12 and the other's 2.13 and above.
01:18:59Okay. Thanks.
01:19:03So what time is your race Saturday?
01:19:052.30. But I run a qualifying heat before it on Wednesday.
01:19:09I thought you already qualified.
01:19:11That was the regional to get into the national. So there are 24 runners that made it to the national meet.
01:19:16So on Wednesday there are three heats. The top two for beach heat plus the next two best times make it to the final which is on Saturday.
01:19:23Okay. So eight runners total in the final.
01:19:25Right.
01:19:26I see.
01:19:27Well, we're all planning to be there.
01:19:29Thanks.
01:19:30Are you nervous?
01:19:31Nope.
01:19:32No?
01:19:33No.
01:19:34You are too.
01:19:35I am not.
01:19:36Don't get overconfident now.
01:19:38I'm not doing that. I never do that. I have respect for my opponents. They just can't beat me.
01:19:44What about the girl from Bethany?
01:19:46What about her?
01:19:47Is she in your heat?
01:19:48No, but it doesn't matter. Look. See this side of me?
01:19:51Yeah.
01:19:52That's the only side any runner is going to see of me at the end of a race.
01:19:57Okay. So you won your heat today, but you can't run a 210 and expect to win in the final.
01:20:01I know, but I didn't run my hardest. I told you that.
01:20:04But I haven't seen you run hard since Coach Donnelly took over. I mean, you ran a faster time than Coach Michaels.
01:20:08Well, Coach Donnelly has a race strategy and there's been no reason to use it yet. But we will on Saturday.
01:20:14That doesn't...
01:20:17I was going to say something negative and I caught myself. I'm becoming a new man.
01:20:21Race strategy. Coach Donnelly. On Saturday. Got it.
01:20:28Hey, Brittany.
01:20:30Yeah?
01:20:33Hope it works.
01:20:36Thanks.
01:20:40Brittany ran a 209.8 earlier in the season, and then two weeks later, a 208.5. Since then, nothing faster.
01:20:48And Keisha ran a 204.9 at regional, just three-tenths of a second off her record.
01:20:53It's not even close.
01:20:55That girl looked good for 600 meters. I mean, she was right there.
01:20:58It's an 800-meter race, not 600.
01:21:02You worried about her?
01:21:03No, sir. Even if she stayed with me, she wasn't going to beat me down the stretch.
01:21:08Look, Coach. We've got two options here. Either Keisha runs like Keisha runs, or we let Brittany take the lead and Keisha gets her in the end.
01:21:18Hey, Coach.
01:21:19I saw your car.
01:21:20Hey.
01:21:21You didn't have to come in today. All I did was run easy.
01:21:23I know. I wanted to. I felt like it was important.
01:21:26The other coaches said they're coming to watch my race.
01:21:29That's great.
01:21:31Not sure what they're expecting to see.
01:21:33Keisha's going to make history, right? Only four-time winner at any event.
01:21:38That's what everyone's expecting to see. Except me.
01:21:42And that's why I'm here today.
01:21:43And it would really help if you felt the same way.
01:21:47Coach, I've run a 2.08. She's run a 2.04. I'm not even close.
01:21:55Brittany, running isn't just physical. It's also mental. You have to believe you can do this.
01:22:03It's easy to say.
01:22:05Do you remember the story?
01:22:07Yeah.
01:22:09It's easy to say.
01:22:11Do you remember the story in the Bible about the blind man Bartimaeus?
01:22:16He was begging on the side of the road when he heard Jesus was coming.
01:22:19He said, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
01:22:23And Jesus called for him, and Bartimaeus cast aside his garment.
01:22:28And Jesus asked him what he wanted.
01:22:31He said that he wanted to see.
01:22:34Jesus said, your faith has made you whole.
01:22:36And he immediately received his sight.
01:22:39Jesus said that his faith made him whole, but what faith was he talking about?
01:22:45A lot of people don't know that in those days, blind people wore a special garment so that other people would know that they were blind.
01:22:52So when Bartimaeus cast it aside, it was his way of saying, I'm not even going to need this anymore.
01:22:57That's the faith.
01:22:59He believed that Jesus was going to heal him before he was even healed.
01:23:02And I believe you can be Keisha.
01:23:05I really do.
01:23:07But you've got to believe it too.
01:23:11Brittany was right with Keisha for 600 meters in the regional.
01:23:15And Coach Donnelly told her to pull back.
01:23:17Why'd she do that?
01:23:19We don't know.
01:23:21Brittany?
01:23:22I don't know.
01:23:23I just did what she told me.
01:23:26And then, yesterday in her heat at the national qualifier,
01:23:29Coach Donnelly told Brittany to stay with the leaders and then win it at the end.
01:23:34Which she did.
01:23:36I ran a 210.3.
01:23:40You run faster than that.
01:23:43Yeah.
01:23:45Coach Michaels, we're not here to complain about Coach Donnelly, but perhaps you can give us some clear direction.
01:23:52I saw the regional race, and for 600 meters,
01:23:56I saw the regional race, and for 600 meters, Brittany was right with Keisha.
01:24:01She looks great.
01:24:02Yeah, she did.
01:24:04And I think it's the only way to run the final and have a chance.
01:24:07It certainly can't be what Coach Donnelly is hoping for.
01:24:10Which is what?
01:24:14That Keisha will go out slower in the final.
01:24:17Now think about that.
01:24:19The 800-meter champion for the past three years.
01:24:22Nobody even close to her.
01:24:23And Coach Donnelly thinks Keisha's coach is going to slow her down for the final.
01:24:28Why does she think that?
01:24:30No idea.
01:24:32Brittany?
01:24:34I don't know, sir.
01:24:36We came here tonight to ask if you could override Coach Donnelly and make the decision for how Brittany should run her race.
01:24:45I see.
01:24:47Coach Michaels, if Coach Donnelly had never come on the scene,
01:24:51wouldn't you advise Brittany to go out with Keisha and try and stay with her?
01:24:57Coach, wouldn't you?
01:25:01As a former 800-meter runner and a finalist in the NCAA, yes, I would.
01:25:09Would you gentlemen please excuse us? I want to talk to Brittany alone.
01:25:17I told you we could get them to make a change.
01:25:22Hey, listen.
01:25:24I'm still the head coach of this team.
01:25:26I coach you distance runners.
01:25:28We've been together now three years.
01:25:31You and I have accomplished a lot.
01:25:34So I'm going to tell you how you're going to run your race at the National,
01:25:38and I want you to do exactly as I'm going to say.
01:25:41You understand, young lady?
01:25:43Yes, sir.
01:25:44Please give me your word as a Christian that you'll do exactly as I tell you.
01:25:50I will.
01:25:53I want you to run your race exactly as Coach Donnelly says.
01:26:02Yes, sir.
01:26:14Let's go.
01:26:28You warmed up?
01:26:30Yeah, I'm ready.
01:26:32Okay, good. This is what we've been working towards.
01:26:35All the training, all the effort, all the pacing.
01:26:38Yep.
01:26:39This goes the way I hoped, and you should be in the lead at 100 meters with Keisha right behind you.
01:26:45Let's hope her coach took the bait.
01:26:48What does that mean?
01:26:50Do you remember the story I told you from the golf match when I was like 13?
01:26:54Yeah.
01:26:56Do you remember what I said I did wrong?
01:26:58You worried about the other players.
01:27:00Right. And that's exactly what we tried to do to Keisha.
01:27:04We want her to run our race today instead of hers.
01:27:07And having you run with her for 600 meters and slowing down, that was to get into her head.
01:27:14Let's hope it worked.
01:27:17What if Keisha goes up fast like she always does?
01:27:20It doesn't matter. Run the race the way you've been training.
01:27:23But if she goes up with you, that's what we want.
01:27:26Remember, it's not always the fastest runner that wins.
01:27:29It's the one that crosses the finish line first.
01:27:32I've never been so nervous in my life.
01:27:35Hey, you've run this pace for 600 meters in practice, so you know you can get that far.
01:27:42The hill workouts that we've been doing and Bartimaeus, they'll get you the rest of the way.
01:27:50If I had to place a bet on the race today, I'd put my money on Secretariat.
01:28:02Never been a four-time winner in any event. I bet Keisha breaks her record by at least a second.
01:28:07What's her record?
01:28:09204.6.
01:28:11204.6? OK.
01:28:19I don't think our high school coach knows how good Keisha really is.
01:28:24Well, she'll find out in a few minutes. 800's about to start.
01:28:31Go, Keisha!
01:28:42Ladies, take your lanes.
01:28:49Let's go, Keisha!
01:28:57Let's go, Brittany!
01:29:02Good luck, Brittany!
01:29:06Runners, set!
01:29:31Go, Brittany!
01:30:02Go, Brittany!
01:30:15You got this!
01:30:17You got this!
01:30:19Let's go, Brittany!
01:30:31Go, Brittany!
01:31:02Go now, Keisha!
01:31:04Go now!
01:31:31Go now!
01:31:51Hi.
01:31:52Hi.
01:31:53How's Coach Michael doing?
01:31:54How's he doing?
01:31:55He's doing fine, but he's pretty heavily sedated, so he won't be awake for a few more hours.
01:32:01Can we see him?
01:32:02I'm sorry, but no visitors.
01:32:08You guys wait here for a minute.
01:32:25Hey.
01:32:26She said that you could go back there, but just for a minute.
01:32:30OK.
01:32:31Thanks.
01:32:54To be successful as a runner, it takes hard work, discipline, and proper training.
01:33:18And sometimes in order to win, you have to be willing to lose.
01:33:22The same is true in life.
01:33:24Hard work, discipline, and proper training always pay off.
01:33:27But the most important thing in this life is to be willing to lose.
01:33:31Jesus said it best.
01:33:33Whoever will save his life shall lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake shall save it.
01:33:55I love you.
