00:00In this world, there is real evil, in the darkest shadows and in the most ordinary places.
00:15These are the true stories of the innocent and the unimaginable.
00:19When the Johnsons moved to a small town in New England, they disturbed the peace of a
00:25dormant presence.
00:28These souls inflict fear upon the living, shattering rational beliefs.
00:34With the help of a team of witches, an embattled family fights the unknown to take back their
00:39home and their sanity.
00:47Between the world we see and the things we fear, there are doors, and they are opened.
00:56Nightmares become reality.
01:04Nestled between the majestic Green Mountains and the fertile river valleys of southern
01:08Vermont lies the town of Chester, the birthplace of thousands of young soldiers whose lives
01:15were tragically cut short in the Civil War.
01:19Today, local legends chronicle centuries-old accounts of untimely deaths.
01:27And every now and then, the agonizing cries of these young souls can still be heard, echoing
01:35from beyond the grave.
01:46The year is 2005.
01:54Libby and Shawn Johnson, along with their two daughters, seven-year-old Grace and five-year-old
02:00Willa, search for the perfect home.
02:05Having moved from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, nearly a year ago, they believe that Chester,
02:09Vermont is a town of promise.
02:13We really liked the pace of life here in New England, and we thought living in a small
02:20rural town would be a nice place to raise our children.
02:22What do you think?
02:23Well, he needs a little imagination.
02:24I mean, this place could be great.
02:25The Johnsons have been living in a small two-bedroom apartment for over a year while looking for
02:30a place of their own.
02:33Hi, this is Shawn Johnson.
02:38I'm over at the house on School Street.
02:39You know, I was wondering if we could see it today.
02:56The house needed probably $200,000 worth of general construction to get it to be livable.
03:02Shawn was the eternal optimist and was so excited.
03:06It's got great bones.
03:07What?
03:08Look at that.
03:09The house.
03:10It's solid.
03:11It doesn't rock.
03:12I, on the other hand, was thinking, I could never live in this house.
03:16It needs so much work.
03:17I don't know about this, Shawn.
03:19She wanted to finish Prada.
03:22She didn't want to live through construction.
03:23Libby, we can do this.
03:27Shawn, who runs a car dealership from home, offers to oversee the renovations.
03:31I could look after the girls, too.
03:34Libby figures she can use this opportunity to go back to work, something she's always
03:38wanted to do.
03:45So we thought we'd give it a shot.
03:47Okay.
03:48Over the next few months, Shawn continues to assist with the construction and manage
04:06his business from the apartment, while Libby takes a job as a secretary at the local elementary
04:13school.
04:19Finally, after ten months of construction, the renovations are nearly complete.
04:28Hey, Freddie, how's it going?
04:32One afternoon, Libby checks on the workers during her lunch hour.
04:35That's okay.
04:36I just wanted to see how you guys were doing.
04:37Great.
04:38Moving on.
04:39Oh!
04:40This is incredible.
04:53She discovers dozens of old family photographs, letters and documents dating back to the Civil
04:59War.
05:00Yeah, you never know what you're going to find once you start tearing down these old
05:07walls.
05:08I want to keep these.
05:09Why don't you give me a...
05:10Let me know if you find any more of these, okay?
05:13Sure.
05:14Sure.
05:15No problem.
05:16I was very excited to find those documents, just to learn a little bit more about history
05:18and the people that lived here.
05:20It's just interesting to think about how people lived in New England with no hospitals and
05:25grocery stores and ATMs and cars.
05:30In March of 2006, the Johnsons finally move into their new home.
05:38The renovations are not completely finished, but Shawn and Libby can wait no longer.
05:43All right, get it while it's hot.
05:46My husband and I were so excited to be moving into the house.
05:49It would have been a year of blood, sweat, tears and lots of money trying to renovate
05:55this house.
05:56And for you...
05:57The kids, on the other hand, were not as excited.
06:04I don't like it here.
06:07It's big and scary.
06:09You're going to love this house.
06:11Okay, kiddo?
06:13Okay.
06:23The girls sleep with their parents while the floors in their room are refinished.
06:29Get away!
06:30Get away!
06:31Get away!
06:32It's all right, honey.
06:33Just wake up.
06:34It's okay, honey.
06:35Wake up.
06:36Grace!
06:37Wake up!
06:38It's okay.
06:39It's all right.
06:40There was someone coming after me.
06:43She saw a person come into the room with strange-looking eyes and was coming toward her.
06:50Oh, it was just a dream, Gracie.
06:52Hey, you want to sleep in our bed tonight?
06:54Come on.
06:55I just thought it was, you know, her nerves from being in a new place.
07:00She just was scared.
07:06What?
07:27What was that?
07:28Did you...
07:29I thought...
07:30I heard the door shut.
07:31I heard a door slam.
07:36And then I heard another door slam.
07:57My ears are hearing the door slam, but I'm not seeing any door slamming.
08:01And I can't figure it out.

12:02And as soon as I opened up our bedroom door, the voices stopped.
12:24Well I must have left the TV set on.
12:28And then everything was quiet.
12:39I thought, well, maybe I was just dreaming that.
12:50The following morning...
12:51Grace, Willa, come on girls, you're going to be late for school.
13:07Hey, what's this?
13:08I don't know.
13:09Okay.
13:10Come on, zip up, get downstairs.
13:11Daddy's got breakfast waiting, okay?
13:12Okay.
13:14Go on.
13:15Love you.
13:16Scoot, love you too.
13:17Hey, sleepyhead.
13:18Rise and shine.
13:19Hey.
13:20Hey.
13:21Hey, what's this puzzle doing over here?
13:22I thought you hated puzzles.
13:23The fairies wanted to do it.
13:24What?
13:25There were two fairies here.
13:26Hey.
13:27Hey.
13:28Hey.
13:29Hey.
13:30Hey.
13:31Hey.
13:32Hey.
13:33Hey.
13:34Hey.
13:35Hey.
13:36Hey.
13:37Hey.
13:38Hey.
13:39Hey.
13:40Hey.
13:41Hey.
13:42Hey.
13:43Hey.
13:44Hey.
13:45Hey.
13:46We played all night.
13:47Well that sounds like a wonderful dream.
13:48It wasn't a dream.
13:49Okay.
13:50Well, what did these fairies look like?
13:51They had white dresses, white stockings and they had ribbons in their hair, too.
13:57Well, where do these fairies live?
14:04In a forest?
14:08too. Where do these fairies live?
14:23They live under a tree in their yard.
14:30Well that sounds wonderful honey. Libby is puzzled.
14:34Why don't you go brush your teeth and wash up get dressed okay?
14:37She can't remember Grace's dreams ever being so vivid
14:41and knows it's unlike her daughter to make up stories.
14:46Part of me really wanted to believe that she just had a very overactive imagination.
14:58In the days that follow Libby manages to forget about these strange incidents
15:03and settles into a normal routine.
15:10Grace, Will, are you in here?
15:14I could hear young children giggling. It made me feel really uncomfortable.
15:36I didn't really know what to think.
15:37Grace, Willa, are you guys up here?
16:07Were you girls just upstairs? No, we were right here.
16:26Grace, what is this? What is this a picture of?
16:29It's our house and that's the fire.
16:32Grace had drawn our house on fire. This was very alarming to me.
16:37Grace, honey, why would you draw a picture like this?
16:44I'm afraid you and daddy are gonna die in a fire.
16:50No honey, mommy and daddy aren't gonna die in a fire.
16:54The fairies mommy and daddy died in a fire.
16:58Grace, honey, that was just a dream. The fairies aren't real.
17:01But it wasn't a dream. They're real.
17:04It was interesting to me that she was so adamant that it wasn't a dream.
17:09I'm beginning to wonder maybe if there's something coming into play that isn't natural.
17:16We've had too many things happen in the house to just write them off as random events.
17:28Libby is beginning to believe that her house may be haunted.
17:34She hopes that history can shed some light on what has been happening.
17:49Hey, what are you doing up here? What's that?
17:52Stuff the workers found when they were up here renovating.
17:55I decided to try and figure out, you know, if these two fairies that Grace is talking about
18:00happen to be little girls that used to live here. If there was a fire in the house at some point.
18:06I'm sure you're overthinking this whole thing.
18:08There were many moments when Sean tried to talk me out of believing that something
18:13paranormal was happening. We both really wanted it to be something natural.
18:18But whatever it is, I think we should keep the whole thing quiet.
18:22Being the new people in town, I was concerned about airing too much.
18:27Look, I'm just trying to figure this out. I'm starting to think I'm going crazy.
18:31Okay, look, I'm going to take the girls for a walk. Do you want to come?
18:33No, no, you go ahead. I've got some errands to run.
18:36Okay.
18:52Libby takes the old photographs and documents to the Chester Historical Society.
18:58Now, it says here that that old house was used as a barracks during a civil war.
19:04I was actually wondering if there was any record of any fire.
19:07Unfortunately, Libby doesn't receive the answer she's looking for.
19:12The director finds no evidence of a fire on her property.
19:15I've seen any evidence of a fire.
19:18What about these photographs? Do any of these people look familiar?
19:22Let me take a look. Yeah.
19:26Look at that. There seems to be something stuck here.
19:31Let's see.
19:37He tells Libby that this is an early 20th century photograph of Chester's civil war veterans.
19:42Picture of the 50th anniversary of the Gettysburg battle.
19:47Who are the girls?
19:52Well, I don't know, but they certainly don't seem to belong there.
19:57It's strange because these girls match to a tee
20:00a description of the fairies that Grace kept talking about that would go into her bedroom.
20:18Libby remains calm for her family.
20:21Can you give me a kiss goodnight?
20:23Yes, come here.
20:33Hey, honey, can I show you something for a second?
20:36Just pop over there.
20:42I want you to do something for me, OK?
20:45I'm going to show you this picture.
20:47And I want you to tell me if you see anybody in it that you recognize.
20:52The fairies.
20:54I was not surprised that Grace said that.
20:57I just knew that those little girls who were in the photograph had something to do with the house.
21:05Hey, Grace, come on. Why don't you go upstairs and get ready for bed, huh?
21:10I'll be right up in a minute.
21:16There is an explanation.
21:18She's just a child.
21:21Well, you heard the girls giggling in the middle of the night.
21:24That was a dream.
21:28Sean cannot come to terms with the fact that the house could be haunted.
21:33I couldn't explain it.
21:36So therefore, I was a little conflicted on what it could be.
21:40All these things were happening.
21:41They were pointing to something other than the fairies.
21:44Pointing to something other than normal.
21:47She's been playing Ring Around the Rosie with two little fairies who happen to look exactly like the little girls in this picture.
21:52I never taught her that song.
21:54Maybe she picked it up at school.
21:55No, I talked to her teacher.
21:56She said they never sing it there.
21:59I mean, did you know that that song is about the plague?
22:02It's a song about death, Sean.
22:04She is obsessed with death.
22:06Ashes to ashes, we all fall down.
22:08What do you want to do?
22:09Move?
22:11No.
22:12No, of course not.
22:13We've put more money into the house than it even cost to buy.
22:17I'm sorry.
22:18So it just wasn't an option to sell the house.
22:20I just don't know what to do.
22:21Grace wasn't afraid.
22:23It wasn't so scary at that point that I felt that we were in danger.
22:34Sean, when you heard the door slamming, did it wake you up?
22:36Libby begins a record of her experiences.
22:39When you heard the door slamming, were you awake or did it wake you up?
22:43I don't know.
22:46Sean?
22:49I was asleep.
22:50It woke me up.
22:51Okay, well, what about when you heard the girls giggling?
22:54I wrote down the time, the weather, what was going on in our family,
22:58if anyone was sick, if there was any kind of unusual tension or stress.
23:02I really wanted to make it as scientific as possible.
23:06Sean!
23:07Jeez, Libby, come on.
23:08Can I just watch the game?
23:1362.
23:15They play their first game ever as they lose 11 to 4.
23:19Did you leave the window open upstairs?
23:21No, I did not.
23:43I felt like I was being watched and like there was a presence in the room.
24:13Are you okay?
24:31No, I'm not okay.
24:32There is something in this house.
24:34It's not alive.
24:35It's not like you and me.
24:37It moved as fast as I've ever seen anything move.
24:43You know it as well as I do and you're gonna have to face it.
24:48I saw something, a black figure.
24:52I was at the window and I felt something behind me and I turned around and I saw this black thing
25:01standing in front of me.
25:04It darted under the bed but it was right there.
25:09I saw it.
25:10It's real.
25:13It's real.
25:20Libby no longer believes the ghosts are harmless
25:23and searches the internet for a way to remove the spirits.
25:28When I just thought, you know, why is this happening?
25:31Should we really believe in this?
25:34She learned she can remove the spirits by smudging the house with sage.
25:38Smudging is a Native American ritual where sage is burned to cleanse a space of negative energy.
25:45It sounded a little far out but at this point I was feeling really like, well, what can it hurt?
25:54It's gotta help.
25:57That day Libby finds a local store that sells sage.
26:01Excuse me.
26:03Can I help you?
26:05Can I help you?
26:06I was actually wondering if you have any sage.
26:09I was a little bit embarrassed by the whole sage smudging idea.
26:13It's just not something I would normally try.
26:15Okay, did you want a bag or did you want smudge sticks?
26:19Smudge sticks.
26:20Two, actually.
26:24They're gonna be five dollars a piece.
26:35That afternoon, Sean keeps the girls occupied so Libby can perform the smudging.
26:40Don't stay on the sidewalk, all right?
26:42Don't get too far ahead of me.
26:44You sure you want me to stay with you?
26:46No, I'll be all right.
26:47You go ahead.
26:48Okay.
26:48All right.
26:49All right.
26:50Hey!
26:51Come on, girls.
27:04We mean you no harm.
27:10Please leave this house in peace.
27:11I walked around the house with burning sage and said a little wish in every single room.
27:24Please leave this house in peace.
27:35After the smudging, things returned to normal for several weeks.
27:42Libby is relieved that the spirits have finally left.
27:47Then one night, Grace suddenly falls ill.
27:51What's up, kiddo?
27:52She doesn't feel so hot.
27:55Oh, what's the matter?
27:57She has an upset stomach.
27:59Do you want to sleep with mommy tonight, sweetheart?
28:01I decided to have her sleep in my bedroom with me.
28:06Me too.
28:07I want to sleep in your bed too.
28:10All right.
28:11All right.
28:13I guess I'm sleeping in Grace's bed tonight.
28:21I want to sit next to mom.
28:23No, I want to sit next to mom.
28:24Okay, I'll get in the middle.
28:26Both of you.
28:26Good night, dad.
28:27Good night.
28:27Good night, Willa.
28:28Good night, Grace.
28:31Where is she?
28:59She's not here.
29:01Where is Grace?
29:05The sheets got really tight, like they were holding me down.
29:09Who are you?
29:12She's not here.
29:13She's sick.
29:13I tried to get up, and I couldn't move.
29:17Where is Grace?
29:20Get away!
29:22Leave us alone!
29:23Leave!
29:24Please, leave us alone!
29:25Get away!
29:28Leave us alone!
29:31Get away!
29:50Please!
29:52Sean, I heard you shouting.
29:53Are you all right?
29:57There's something in this house.
29:59Sean was finally starting to come around
30:02and not be completely in denial that something was happening.
30:22I think they're here.
30:26Libby contacts ISIS investigations.
30:28A team that specializes in helping people who are experiencing paranormal activity.
30:33I hope we're doing the right thing.
30:36What are you looking at?
30:41Okay.
30:41Hey, who wants to get some ice cream?
30:44Okay, come on.
30:45Leave that.
30:45You're doing good.
30:46We'll come back to it.
30:47As a safety precaution, Sean takes the girls out of the house during the investigation.
30:52The members of the ISIS team are all followers of Wicca,
30:55a new religion of life and nature which finds its roots in ancient ways.
31:03Patricia Gardner is the co-founder and director of the group.
31:07Wiccan is another word for witchcraft.
31:10Everything that we do is geared to the protection of the earth
31:14and the creatures that live on it.
31:16Hello.
31:17Hello.
31:17Hello.
31:17Hello.
31:18Hello.
31:18Hello.
31:18Hello.
31:19Hello.
31:19Hello.
31:19Hello.
31:19Hello.
31:19Hello.
31:19Hello.
31:20Hello.
31:20Hello.
31:20Hello.
31:20Hello.
31:20Hello.
31:20Hello.
31:20Hello.
31:21Hello.
31:21Hello.
31:22You must be Libby.
31:23I'm Patricia.
31:24Thank you so much for coming.
31:27Along with Angela Kaufman, co-director Dana Winters,
31:31and Justin Staley, each member is a gifted psychic.
31:45What are they doing?
31:47It looks like they've sensed something.
31:49It was a little startling to me that the first thing they did was to
31:52head over to this tree that I had never even mentioned before.
32:10Angela feels a peculiar sensation coming from the tree.
32:14I notice a very strong, abnormally warm feeling coming from it,
32:19and it seemed to be a center of activity.
32:25Let's go inside.
32:26We'll explain everything.
32:28Okay.
32:40Angela, a psychic sketch artist, uses art to recreate images in her mind's eye.
32:49What I'm trying to do is to use myself as an instrument
32:53to mirror what's going on in the room.
32:55There was a lot of spiritual activity going on in the house.
33:00I did get a couple of specific impressions,
33:05one being this figure in a Civil War uniform.
33:25The final sketch is uncanny.
33:29It's the perfect illustration of the two girls from the photograph found in the attic.
33:37I got the sense that two little girls' spirits were kind of mischievous.
33:41They were just looking for someone to communicate with.
33:47Angela feels the impact of several spirits.
33:51The left part of my head starts to hurt.
33:53My first thought was that something is present in the room and it doesn't like us,
33:58and it's trying to make us feel uncomfortable.
34:04This is my daughter's room.
34:09Patricia and Dana immediately pick up on the presence of the two little girls.
34:14We assumed that it was the girls playing with the cat
34:18to let us know that they were in the room with us.
34:22That's so odd. That toy has been broken for months.
34:34I don't know what's going on in the room, but I feel like I'm in a haunted house.
34:44Lebi hopes that Patricia can reveal why the spirits are haunting her house.
34:49These are interesting.
34:52This was the one, though, that held the most interest to me.
34:55This is the one I was telling you about, the one with the two little girls.
35:02This is amazing.
35:08Patricia runs her hands over the images on the photograph.
35:11These are the little girls.
35:13As her fingers pass over the two girls, she senses a change in temperature.
35:23The warm feeling I'm sensing means that they're still earthbound.
35:29Who are they? What do they want with my daughter?
35:33Patricia believes the girls once lived in the house and don't know how to cross over.
35:38Oh, but the presence of a fire remains a mystery.
35:46There are others. So many others.
35:57Did you do a lot of renovations?
35:59Patricia believes that renovations must have awakened the dormant spirits in the house.
36:03We basically started from the bones and rebuilt it.
36:08When you renovate things, even if something's been asleep for a hundred years,
36:13that's the best way I know of to wake it up.
36:15Because they want to know what you're doing to their property.
36:18Because in their minds, it still belongs to them.
36:20We need to perform a ceremony, which will help some of the spirits here move on to another plane.
36:28Okay. What do we need to do?
36:31We'll perform what we call a magic circle and then a crossing ceremony.
36:37So
36:57the Wiccans begin the crossing over ceremony by casting a magic circle.
37:02A magic circle is what witches use to protect themselves before rituals.
37:07Ye gods of the watchtowers of the east.
37:13In Wicca, guardians known as watchtowers
37:17are called upon to protect the four directions of the circle.
37:21We call upon you to protect the sacred space.
37:26Ye gods of the watchtowers of the west, we call upon you to protect the sacred space.
37:33Ye lords of the watchtowers of the depth.
37:36During the ritual, incense is offered to the guardians in exchange for their protection.
37:44Now protected by the magic circle, they begin the crossing over ceremony.
37:50We open a doorway so that the spirits can cross over to where they are supposed to be.
37:57For some of them, you pick up on their sadness or their fear.
39:03I think they've gone.
39:09Afterwards, the feeling of calm and peace envelops everyone in the room.
39:15Most of them have left.
39:17That's it.
39:18Patricia tells Libby she believes that most of the spirits have moved through the open door
39:23to the west, to a place called the Summerlands, a Wiccan version of the afterlife.
39:40Things have returned to normal for the Johnson family.
39:44But they will never forget how their lives were touched by the supernatural.
39:49This whole experience absolutely changed the way I think about things.
39:55I do believe in a soul now, which was a huge revelation for me.
40:00I think it's really been sort of a gift to our family.
40:18Recently, the Johnson's removed the old tree in the backyard to make room for an addition.
40:49Libby, come here.
40:54You might want to take a look at this.
40:56Truce.
40:59What is it?
41:02Looks like there was a fire here.
41:05He found an old brick foundation that had been all burned out.
41:11There's even burnt clothes in the ground.
41:13Black ash, charcoal covered wooden beams and burned clothing
41:18indicates the presence of a devastating fire long ago.
41:22Grace was right.
41:30There really was a fire.
41:43No human remains were ever found beneath the tree.
41:54And whether or not anyone actually died in the fire may remain a mystery forever.
