00:00When I teach about developing willpower, I tell people there are three ways to develop willpower.
00:10So three ways to develop willpower. Finish what you begin, do a little bit better than you think you can,
00:14and do a little bit more than you think you can. All of those three things require effort, and that's developing willpower.
00:20It's very easy to start a project, but it's quite difficult to finish a project.
00:23Halfway through the project we go, whose idea was this? You know, there's so much work, let's start something new.
00:29So every time you finish what you begin, it requires willpower.
00:32So the practical way to bring this into your life is to look at your average day and ask yourself,
00:38what are the repetitive things that you do every day?
00:41And the way I phrase it is, what are the non-negotiable, reoccurring events in your life?
00:47Every day I go to sleep. It's a non-negotiable, reoccurring event.
00:51And hopefully I wake up. So before I sleep, I floss, I brush my teeth, put my pyjamas on, I go to sleep.
00:57When I wake up in the morning, you finish what you begin.
01:00So how do I finish the process of sleep when I wake up in the morning? I make the bed.
01:03When I make the bed in the morning, I'm finishing the process of sleep.
01:06And it takes effort to make the bed.
01:08Then it says, the second rule is, do a little bit more than you think you can.
01:12The third one is, do it better than you think you can.
01:14So every day I make the bed, I pull the sheet, I fluff the pillows, I put them nicely.
01:18Some days I double fold the comforter like they do at the W Hotel.
01:22Some days I fold it at an angle like they do at the Four Seasons.
01:26But every day I make the bed.
01:28And the process of making the bed at the morning is me finishing what I'm beginning,
01:32which is me developing willpower.
01:35I have time to make breakfast. I have time to eat breakfast.
01:39I have time to wash the breakfast dish.
01:42Most people after eating, throw it in the sink and go, I'm late, I have to go.
01:45I'll wash it later.
01:47Finish what you begin. It requires willpower.
01:51So every time you finish what you begin throughout the day, you're developing willpower.
01:55Why do you develop willpower?
01:57You develop willpower so you can control where your awareness goes in your mind.
02:01The ball of light, right, for those of you who have done the course.
02:04You develop willpower. I define willpower as a mental muscle.
02:07If I can draw biceps around my mind, right, muscles, that would be my willpower.
02:12And every time my awareness drifts away, I use my willpower to bring my awareness back.
02:16I develop willpower to control where my awareness is going.
02:20I control where my awareness is going to control where my energy is flowing.
02:26I control where my energy is flowing to control what is manifesting in my life.
02:30That is why I make the bed in the morning.
02:33Now most people come up to me and say, Dandapani, I've been making my bed every single day for a year.
02:38I say congratulations.
02:40Then I ask them, why are you making the bed?
02:4299.99% of the people look at me and say, I make their bed in the morning
02:47because it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
02:50I'm starting the day with a win.
02:52And you know what I think to myself that moment?
02:55That I'm a horrible teacher.
02:57Because I didn't tell you to make the bed in the morning to feel a sense of accomplishment
03:02or to start your day with a win.
03:04Why did I tell you to make the bed in the morning?
03:06To finish what you begin.
03:08Why are you finishing what you begin?
03:09To develop willpower.
03:10Why are you developing willpower?
03:12To control where your awareness goes.
03:14Why are you controlling where your awareness goes?
03:16To control where your energy is flowing.
03:17Why are you controlling where your energy is flowing?
03:19So that you can control what's manifesting in your life.
03:22That's why you develop willpower.
03:24That's why you finish everything that you start throughout the day.
03:28And your whole day then becomes a ritual.
03:30And part of what we're creating in the app is to create rituals in the morning.
03:33So morning it'd be like, make your bed, wash your breakfast dish.
03:36Afternoon would be another ritual.
03:38Evening would be another ritual.
03:39Night would be another ritual.
03:41By the time the end of the day comes,
03:43you spent at least half an hour, 45 minutes, one hour developing willpower.
03:48After six months, what will you have?
03:50Willpower, right?
