00:00We start with quarterback decisions around the national football league
00:03We'll get to the Steelers in a moment
00:05But breaking news in the last few minutes live right here on the early line in foxborough
00:11Gerard mayo informed his team yesterday and made it public today
00:16That the veteran jacoby brissette has been named the starter for the pats week. Number one in
00:23Cincinnati a guy that entering training camp rookie head coach gerard mayo said was the most pro ready quarterback
00:30We have on the roster
00:31But then followed that up after the patriots pre-season finale on sunday night saying drake
00:36May has outplayed jacoby brissette so far throughout camp and pre-season contest
00:42But they go with the veteran presence
00:44Which we think is the right decision despite how this situation was handled up in new england the patriots named jacoby brissette
00:52They're starting quarterback
00:54And i'm gonna double down here on what ben just said the right decision was made for jacoby brissette to start
00:59Even though he's not the better quarterback
01:01Don't kill your young quarterback trying to get into bad habits by having a horrendous football team
01:06Let him play later in the season when everything all the pressure is away
01:09And it looks like you're just trying to get on to next year
01:11Having said that tell me you don't know how to be a head coach without telling me
01:15You don't know how to be a head coach. The reason I bring that up is
01:18Are we playing high school games?
01:20You come out yesterday and make it a basically a press release. I know who my starter is going to be
01:23I'm, just not going to tell anybody till tomorrow when I meet with stop the madness man
01:27Just like yeah, I understand that you've been elevated a head coach
01:30You were handpicked by the owner and all that but this is just amateur stuff here by a head coach
01:36Command the room when you make your decision pick the phone up call both of those quarterbacks then tell your team
01:43I'm, pretty sure like every company has like a a slack chat or an email chain or a text chain that says from the coach
01:50Moving forward here is our quarterback jacoby brissette meeting tomorrow 10 a.m
01:55Let's get this season started instead by telling the press I know but nobody else knows i'm going to sit it out 24 hours
02:02Then tell my team madness here in new england. Did they make the wrong pick as a head coach?
02:06That's going to play out on the field
02:07But I don't like a single thing that has came out of new england over the past six to eight months here
02:12Including naming gerard mayo the head coach at this point
02:16Yeah, so I believe in gerard mayo, but he does not necessarily have it figured out and how to deal with media attention
02:23On the patriots right now needs to learn
02:26From the guy that was there before who he both played and coached under
02:30Bill belichick just a little bit you have to have a clear line of direction
02:36At least in what you are telling the public and then what you are saying
02:39Inside the locker room jacoby brissette a veteran in the national football league has been around for eight seasons
02:46This is 15 in the last eight seasons. It is technically just his fifth team overall
02:52As he started his career in new england back in 2016
02:57As well, he is that veteran. He knows the lay of the land, I guess
03:03In foxborough, but more than anything this was the right call drs
03:07And we'll continue to dive into it in just a little bit because the patriots have the lowest win total
03:11In the national football league this year at only four and a half as you heard really well stated from george
03:17Palachi of nesson earlier this week everything else on the roster skill positions wide receivers the offensive line first and foremost
03:26Is a disaster you do not need to thrust drake may into that spot to have the finger pointed at him
03:33in the blame cast on him from the very start when really it's not his responsibility or
03:40Fault, so you send out jacoby brissette. Is he a sacrificial lamb?
03:44I don't think he would use those words
03:46But a little bit so and the pats have the second most difficult schedule in the national football league
03:51I'm, not entirely sure when we see drake may but I don't expect it to probably happen until week seven week eight
03:58Maybe even week nine. I think the patriots buy is really late this year week 13 or 14
04:04Yeah, and I know even back in the day
04:05They don't do this so much anymore ben
04:06But you can certainly have packages for drake may throughout the season to say all right when we're in the you know
04:11Certain set second quarter first series is yours. I know it sounds really college and high school-ish
04:16But at the same time there is no perfect time as we said the break in drake may unless we're all
04:20Reading the new england patriots wrong and they're going to start the season five and one with that schedule
04:24We're right about this. Let jacoby brissette take his lumps ease drake may into it
04:29There's no reason to rush him and that's really against the grain in today's nfl
04:32You draft a quarterback high up in the first round
04:34He is expected to start day number one, but this team is so bad that you're saying to yourself
04:39We don't want to ruin our young quarterback because our team is so what does that say for the owner?
04:43What does that say for the general manager? What does that say for the head coach? That's embarrassing
04:48The patriots a nine and a half point underdog week number one on the road
04:52Against the bangles again by far the largest spread of the opening weekend of the nfl season then at home versus seattle
04:59A visit to the jets a visit to the niners. That's the first month home against miami home against houston
05:04London game against jacksonville home to end out
05:07October against the new york jets the first game that new england might be a field goal favorite or less
05:14Probably comes week number nine in nashville against the titans
05:17Could that be the first time we truly see drake may take the mantle for the patriots and get his first career?
05:25Start that's the quarterback situation at this moment in foxborough
05:29Now
05:30We go to pittsburgh where it also followed what we expected
05:34But the road to get here might have been a little bit shaky and bumpy the steelers yesterday officially naming russell wilson
05:41Their week one starting quarterback. He wins the job in the steel city over justin fields
05:46I'm, not saying this either is the wrong decision ben by any means like you basically did bring russell wilson in to be your starting quarterback
05:54Understandably, or you wouldn't have brought him in at all
05:55You also brought in justin fields as a chance to get a look see at a young quarterback
05:59That could actually be your franchise guy
06:01But I love when these releases come out because I ripped gerard mayo for the way
06:05He's handling the quarterback situation not for the start of himself
06:08But the way he brought the starter up and said i'm going to wait 24 48 hours, whatever it might be
06:13But now I look at mike tomlin. I don't have anything against mike tomlin
06:16He told you day number one justin fields never had a chance to start didn't matter what justin fields did or any situation?
06:23And russ missed a good chunk of training camp and yet was still going into scrimmages where he would be the starter
06:28Hobble out hand the football off and come back out as the starter so justin fields could go back in
06:33This isn't surprised by any means and again, we're not saying this is the wrong decision
06:37But mike tomlin told you day number one justin fields will not be our starter in the first game of the season
06:44Again, there were odds associated with the starting quarterback job in both
06:47New england jacoby brissett was a hefty favorite and russell wilson greater than a five dollar favorite entering the pre-season finale
06:55For the steelers last week in detroit where russ and justin fields both played in week number three
07:02Leading us to believe maybe the quarterback competition was still open to end out pre-season and training camp
07:09Although it's really been russell wilson all along. We'll look at what this means for the steelers in 2024
07:16It's year 18 under mike tomlin for the same find out next russell wilson has been named the starter in pittsburgh
07:24So now what does 2024 have in store?
07:27For the steelers year number 18 under mike tomlin
07:31We have said it numerous times and i'm sure you've heard it elsewhere that in all 17 years
07:36The steelers have never had a losing record under tomlin
07:39They've never won less than eight games in any individual season whether it was 16
07:45Or now 17 games a playoff team a season ago
07:49And a team that has been consistently successful drs despite an offense that has lagged behind the defensive side
07:56Of the football even with big ben ralphsberger under center in the final few years of his nfl career eight and a half
08:04The win total for pittsburgh this year the under has the hefty juice point
08:08uh plus eight one eight six
08:11Is the number for the pittsburgh steelers to make the postseason as they did a season ago?
08:16You saw the schedule on your screen
08:19And it is considered the most difficult schedule in the national football league
08:23So russell wilson is the starter in the steel city. What is your outlook for the steelers this year?
08:31It's not great
08:32And the reason I say that is if you took the steelers out of that division ben and put them again in a different
08:36Division you might be able to tangle and try to you know
08:39Win nine to ten games maybe even get into the playoffs by winning the division
08:43That's not going to happen
08:43The baltimore ravens are better if you get jamar chase under contract the cincinnati bangles are better as well
08:49And we'll see what happens with the cleveland browns
08:51We know they have a lot of talent
08:52But maybe they can't put it together with the running back injured to start the season and quite frankly
08:55The quarterback with a lot of question marks of a dead arm in camp. That's never a good look
09:00But let's focus on the pittsburgh steelers here
09:02What did I love about russell wilson through the first part of his career ben?
09:05It didn't matter who his offensive line was and the reason I say that is is most of the time
09:09If you can't step up in the pocket and deliver a pass
09:12You can't be a successful quarterback unless you're six foot five, right?
09:15Which we know russell wilson is not he was unbelievable in seattle because he could extend those plays
09:20And get the ball out to his wide receivers
09:22You're still asking him to be that second third fourth fifth year russell wilson now in pittsburgh
09:28And I don't think that's the case
09:29the reason I bring that up is let's you say russell wilson was in philadelphia playing behind a solid offensive line or
09:35Indianapolis, right? Hey, you know what? He's got more time in the pocket to make things happen
09:39You look at that pittsburgh steelers offensive line ben
09:41It's not very good and it's not a young russell wilson and you saw that already in the preseason when that pocket breaks down
09:48He's not as fast as he was in the past taking sacks here
09:51So that ball might come out even quicker and the plays can't develop which was his charm in seattle
09:56Where he could take the extra two seconds to get that wide receiver open. That's what i'm worried about
10:00So when you look at the steelers does justin fields actually fit this offense better not because he's a better passer per se
10:07But he can get out of the way and be mobile and say, you know
10:10What if my offensive line isn't good I can escape and make guys miss to extend plays and run the football myself
10:16That's my worry for the pittsburgh steelers. They have decent skill position players. They have a solid defense
10:21Mike tomlin is known for not losing seasons, right?
10:24And that's where we're gonna put our hang our hat on but the quite the frank fact is that's a tough division
10:29And my outlook is I don't think the steelers make the playoffs
10:33Very difficult division a very difficult slate for the steelers part of the hope
10:39Offensively in the steel city is arthur smith is the new oc
10:43Say what you want about him as a head coach for the falcons the last three years a 7 and 10 record
10:48In all three seasons at the helm in the atl but considered a bright offensive mind around the national football league matt
10:55Canada the former offensive coordinator dispatched
10:58Last year in the regular season. So now you have a new oc
11:02And an experienced quarterback in russell wilson
11:05It was a disastrous two-year tenure in denver based on what the expectation was in the mile high city
11:12But last year rust was pretty good
11:153070 yards and 15 starts that he made 26 touchdowns to only eight ints not necessarily
11:22Prolific he only threw for more than 250 yards three times in those 15 games more than 300 twice
11:30In the first three games of the year when denver was a disaster
11:34But the big difference is just what is his ceiling and peak at this stage of his career about to enter year number 13
11:42In the national football league a decade in seattle as the seahawks quarterback nine
11:48Pro bowl seasons in those 10 years, of course, not a pro bowler either of the past two seasons for the broncos
11:55We will have plenty more around the national football league in just a moment and we'll stay in the division
12:02As well in the afc north it is part of the reason that pittsburgh has the most difficult schedule
12:08In the national football league the team with the easiest schedule of the four teams that hail from the afc north is the cincinnati
12:16Bangles and we'll talk about the bangles outlook that starts week
12:20Number one next sunday is a nine and a half point favorite against new england
12:26Will jamar chase be out there for the bangles donnie? Give us a quick look and reaction. What do you think?
12:34Uh, no
12:36Oh
12:37We'll find out why up next the jamar chase situation in cincinnati
12:42It has by far been donnie right side's favorite topic of this national football league off season
12:47Into training camp into the pre-season weeks and now
12:51Just over a week out from the regular season beginning in cincinnati
12:56Of course, we are one week away from the season opener of the 2024 nfl campaign in arrowhead a place
13:03The chiefs have hosted the bangles in the afc title game two of the previous three seasons
13:10Could the bangles get back there that of course is now the expectation if joe burrow is fully healthy in cincinnati
13:16But will he have his top target an lsu teammate in jamar chase earlier this week bangles head coach
13:24Zach taylor dealing with a fluid situation and jamar chase's status on the practice field throughout camp and now as they get ready
13:31For week number one said that jamar chase would be out there all week long at practice
13:35No
13:36Big deal and then taylor yesterday as chase showed up late to practice and only in street clothes
13:43Rocking the sunglasses said candidly afterward. Hey, maybe I put my foot in my mouth a little bit here
13:50This is a day-to-day
13:52Situation. So what does today hold what does tomorrow hold and most importantly donnie?
13:58What does sunday september 8th hold for jamar chase in the bangles in their season opener against new england?
14:05This is a big problem for the bangles because again
14:07If anybody has played a sport before you don't just want to get parachuted in a couple days before the game actually starts like, okay
14:13I'm here. I know the playbook. We know that works out. You need those reps. You need those contested catches
14:18You need to be around the boys
14:19You got to be all in in those team meetings for a good preparation process to have a great season now
14:24Let's remove that from the equation
14:25What have we known all the way through if there was a precedent across the nfl that no matter what happens the owners stick together
14:31And you are not going to get a new contract until you're at least in your final year of playing with that guaranteed money
14:37I would understand the situation
14:39But mike brown that ownership group are so far removed about the reality of the nfl and even saw yesterday
14:44Say what you want don't understand it here
14:46You know, let's just say the private equity money coming in all the owners like yeah
14:49We love that mike brown's like no
14:51I don't love that the only dissenting voter which lets you know a little bit about that
14:54Organization and how in tune with the rest of the nfl they actually are
14:58If you remember a couple years ago when the nfl was in those strike process
15:01It's always the smaller market teams like mike brown who always get yelled at from the other teams
15:05And if i'm again, i'm just setting the stage here to try to prove my point
15:08There was a time ago where the stadium itself was named after his father and he thought that was important
15:14But that was sort of holding up the process on kim saying we don't have revenue streams
15:18Like let's just say the dallas cowboys do and I remember jerry jones at one of those owners meeting goings
15:22You give me the rights to your stadium. I will sell it and make you 30 million dollars a year
15:27You're not being honest with what your revenue streams are actually up here
15:31So now we're taking a look at setting the stage where the running excuse me
15:34The wide receiver wants his money every single player around him outside of right now
15:39Brandon ayuku, by the way
15:41Is going to make like three or four times as much as jamar chase if they both play the season under the same contracts
15:46That's not fair and it doesn't make sense
15:48If you are telling yourself that jamar chase is one of the best wide outs in football
15:52And we're going to be a better team because he's here. Why is he not signed yet?
15:56It doesn't make any sense and you can extend that out two years
16:00Then the extension kicks in you can have chase not holding out again for at least another five years and playing under a price point
16:07Now that's going to be way cheaper ben than what that price point is going to be next year and get a happy
16:13Dedicated wide receiver. So let's just play devil's advocate quickly
16:16Let's just say he doesn't get signed you expect the season jamar
16:19Chase is going to give him every single thing he can to get in that lineup
16:23And the reason I bring this up is and i'm not blaming
16:26you know
16:27Lamar jackson at this point, but do you remember lamar jackson?
16:30Hey, I got a little bit of a knee injury that guy sat out like seven or eight weeks because why?
16:34He wasn't invested with the franchise and wasn't sure the franchise loved him back pay the guy
16:40He will be a hundred percent all in week number one
16:43But instead we're going to play this charade from mike brown in that organization embarrassing cincinnati
16:49And maybe since he could afford jamar chase not being there week one again a nine and a half point home favorite against the patriots
16:56It is the largest spread of week one. We say that more tongue-in-cheek
16:59You want your guys out there from the very start of the season?
17:03I am optimistic about cincinnati with the return of a fully healthy joe burrow who really had an entire training camp and pre-season
17:11Not dealing with a lingering injury for the first time in his nfl
17:15Career, but again what makes zero fiscal sense?
17:18If you are mike brown and you are a little bit on the cheaper side
17:23Shall we say then look at the financial numbers and do not tell us at the very end of the off season
17:29With your team reporting for training camp that contract conversations happen during the off season
17:35So now the time is done like you just fast forward through the previous four or five months since the end
17:42Of february and it goes without saying one of the reasons donnie that jaylen wattle who was also a first round pick alongside chase
17:50In 2021 was paid this off season with a large contract extension
17:55That has him as the highest paid wide receiver not among the five guys in the 30 million
18:01Dollar club and you might be saying jaylen wattle's not quite that level of a wide receiver
18:07Although very talented in south florida is because you average out
18:11What seems like a lucrative deal over the final two years of his rookie contract and make it more franchise friendly
18:18That's what I do not understand
18:20Why cincinnati has played this game with jamar chase you could have paid him 35 million dollars
18:26Which is a lot it would match justin jefferson for the highest ever
18:30Contract the richest ever contract of a non-quarterback in nfl history
18:35But had the words he matches justin jefferson as the richest wide receiver ever and not next off season saying well now
18:42We got to reset the market once again. None of it makes sense. I'm optimistic about the bangles
18:48I don't feel good about this situation with their best offensive player outside the quarterback room other notable
18:56additions and maneuvers
18:58Yesterday dalvin cook a notable signing based on name and pedigree
19:03Not necessarily what he's going to add this year in dallas
19:06but the cowboys do sign and the chiefs making a couple of moves adding some ajp right and
19:12Snatching up bailey zappy off waiver wires
19:15I saw a great tweet yesterday that andy reid's gonna put bailey zappy in there to start week number 18
19:20For casey and then trade him for a fourth round pick that very next off season the 49ers signed terrence marshall
19:27Jr. A wide receiver that played with justin jefferson and jamar chase at lsu a second round draft pick now a few years ago
19:36Alan robinson makes his way to detroit and this was an interesting situation
19:41Yesterday lewis seen for a first round pick a safety out of georgia for minnesota
19:47He was released by the vikings. He was on waiver wires
19:50He cleared it seemed as though he was going to sign with the new york jets psych. He's not going to forum park
19:56He's going up to orchard park in western. New york. He's now signing with the buffalo bills
20:02Yeah used to be a little bit more exciting this cut down day
20:04But as you see like the notable signings here
20:07Nobody really is going to have an impact whatsoever on the outcome of those teams here
20:10You might bolster some of the depth but it used to be some of the bigger names got released and oh my goodness
20:14Where are they actually going to go and by the way, just a quick closing point there on jamar chase
20:19I always hear this too
20:20Well, if you're an organization ben
20:21You can't set the precedent for guys having a couple years left on their contract because everybody will do it
20:26Do you not understand how this world works go back to the 1990s jimmy johnson and the dallas cowboys?
20:31He told you flat out emmet smith sleeps in a meeting. That's very important
20:35He gently wakes him up and gives him a cup of coffee the third string running back sleeps during that same meeting
20:40He gets cut immediately and shown the door jamar
20:43Chase is a top five wide receiver in the nfl if he wants more money you pay him more money
20:47Your third string tight end is not going to hold out with two years left on his rookie contract because he knows he can't do
20:53It and he's not as a significant part of the team as jamar chase would be don't give me the precedent nonsense
20:59If you have a great player pay him as soon as you can save the money keep him happy
21:03You'll be a better football team because of it not penny pinching like the brown family is doing now
21:09They have a trio of wide receivers along with that quarterback that could be sensational ben over the next five years
21:15T. Higgins will be gone next year at this apparent rate jamar. Chase will be gone as well. Congratulations cincinnati. You saved the money on your payroll
21:22Greatness deserves a precedent being set and that is jamar chase per day
21:28Sewell remember it was the conversation in the draft with the bangles draft a big o lineman out of oregon to protect joe burrow or
21:35Reunite him with his former lsu teammate and with all the offensive line woes
21:40They drafted jamar chase in front of sewell who oh, by the way
21:45Was given a large contract extension to make him the highest paid o lineman in the nfl before christian derrisaw got that money
21:52From minnesota, but again pay your guys when the time is, right?
