Frederick Carlson witnesses a glowing white ball crash on his ranch. Shortly after he and the rest of his family are brutally attacked by aliens that came from within the ball which turns out to be their space craft. Carlson and his oldest boy try to fight off the creatures only to find out that their weapons don't work against them. Based loosely on the real-life Kelly–Hopkinsville encounter.

00:00Ezekiel saw the wheel. This is the wheel he said he saw. These are unidentified flying objects that people say they are seeing now.
00:22Are they proof that we are being visited by civilizations from other stars? Or just what are they?
00:31The United States Air Force began an investigation of this high strangeness in a search for the truth.
00:38What you are about to see is part of that 20-year search.

01:33You're lucky people. In six months, these will be flying around the world nonstop.

01:41That stock you have will be worth millions.
01:45A stewardess. Stewardess.
01:48What's the trouble, Mrs. Jameson?
01:50Will you tell the pilot that we're being chased by a flying saucer?
01:54Look for yourself. See it down there?
01:57It's a flying saucer.
02:00♪♪
02:05You'll be a good boy now, Pat. We'll go riding in the morning.

02:49It has always been our contention, despite denials by the Air Force,
02:55that one day these extraterrestrial lifeforms will make themselves known to us.
03:01Excuse me, Professor Hollander,
03:03but I thought the thrust of your argument has been
03:06that they already have made themselves known to us.
03:09Only to a few select people.
03:11And why is that?
03:13The real truth is there are aliens out there.
03:18They are observing us.
03:21They are so far advanced that we could never comprehend them.
03:26And only when they are ready to reveal themselves to us
03:29will we know their intent, good or bad.
03:33The Air Force, for whatever the reasons,
03:36feel the general public cannot handle the concept of alien beings,
03:42that there would be widespread panic.
03:44And so they have done everything in their power to hide the truth.
03:50The Air Force formed Project Blue Book for three basic purposes.
04:01First, to determine that there was no threat to our national security.
04:06Second, to preclude technological surprise.
04:10And third, and probably most important,
04:13to prove the existence of UFOs.
04:18Yes, that's right.
04:20To prove their existence.
04:22Because as the professor is aware,
04:25a negative hypothesis cannot be proved.
04:29No one can prove that flying saucers do not exist.
04:33Only that they do.
04:36But so far, there's been no hard evidence to confirm their existence.
04:40What does it come down to, ladies and gentlemen?
04:43The bottom line.
04:45Just this.
04:47Each person must ask themselves,
04:51what will I accept in the way of evidence to make me believe?
04:57And only you can answer that question.
05:07You were very good tonight, Jake.
05:09Oh, thank you, Kenny.
05:10You always seem to do your homework, don't you?
05:13People want to believe, Jake.
05:15That's something you don't seem to understand.
05:17I understand.
05:19And I know you do, judging from your latest book sales.
05:22They've sold well.
05:24I can't deny that.
05:26My primary purpose always has been to seek the truth.
05:30Well, keep seeking, Kenny.
05:32And so will we.
05:57Well.
05:59Good afternoon.
06:00Must have been some affair last night.
06:02Yeah, very nice.
06:04And I'm not that late.
06:06I'm a late?
06:07No more than the boss.
06:08How do you feel?
06:09Green.
06:10That was some party.
06:11I enjoy mingling with the intellectual set.
06:14And I feel they enjoy me, too.
06:16There's a Mrs. Marshall waiting in your office for you.
06:19Do I know her?
06:21No, but she seemed to know you.
06:22And she looked upset.
06:27Mrs. Marshall?
06:28Yes.
06:29I'm Jake Gatlin.
06:30This is Sergeant Fitz.
06:31Hi.
06:32Would you like to sit down, please?
06:34Would you like a cup of coffee, ma'am?
06:36Oh, no.
06:39I'm not really sure that I should even be here.
06:43Is there some way we can help you?
06:44I don't know.
06:46You see, I was at the debate last night.
06:48I usually don't go to those kinds of things, but I needed information.
06:52What kind of information?
06:54On-flying saucers.
06:55I just don't know anything about them.
06:57Well, you're not alone.
06:59Well, it's very important that I know.
07:03Why is that, Mrs. Marshall?
07:04Because my husband has invested in a flying saucer factory.
07:10I'm not quite sure I follow you.
07:12He's taken out almost all our savings, $10,000,
07:16and bought stock in a company that's going to make flying saucers.
07:20What's the name of this company, ma'am?
07:22Advanced Aerodynamics Corporation.
07:25It's in Kansas City.
07:27What is it that you'd like us to do?
07:30I'm not sure.
07:32You see, Alex, that's my husband.
07:35He's always believed in UFOs.
07:38He belongs to several saucer clubs and attends all the meetings
07:42and gets all the literature.
07:45He would have gone with me last night, but he had to work.
07:47Yes, ma'am.
07:48Go on.
07:49Well, at one of these meetings, he met Mr. Cochran.
07:53He's president of the Advanced Aerodynamics.
07:56Well, he told Alex that he obtained plans of a flying saucer from some aliens,
08:01and his company was going to manufacture them.
08:03And he was allowing a few people to get in on the ground floor.
08:08Mrs. Marshall, I think you should be telling this story to the FBI.
08:11Whatever for?
08:13Because this is the Air Force.
08:14We have no jurisdiction in civilian cases.
08:17I don't want anybody arrested.
08:20I guess that's what I wanted to find out.
08:24Do you think it's a sound investment?
08:27And is there such a company?
08:29My advice is go to the FBI
08:31or to the Securities Exchange Commission and file a complaint.
08:34A complaint?
08:36Oh, no, I could never do that.
08:41No.
08:43I'm sorry.
08:46I really shouldn't have bothered you.
08:50Yes, ma'am.
08:53Hope you guys have got your bags packed.
08:56Always.
08:57Twix just came in.
08:58Ops immediate.
08:59A flying saucer landed on a ranch just outside of Cheyenne,
09:03a place called Howard Crossing.
09:06The ranch house was attacked by a group of alien beings?
09:11Mr. Carlson, some people from the Air Force are here to see you.
09:14Oh, thank you.
09:15I'm glad to see you.
09:16I'm glad to see you too.
09:17I'm glad to see you too.
09:18I'm glad to see you too.
09:19I'm glad to see you too.
09:20I'm glad to see you too.
09:21I'm glad to see you too.
09:22I'm glad to see you too.
09:23I'm glad to see you too.
09:24I'm glad to see you too.
09:25I'm glad to see you too.
09:26I'm glad to see you too.
09:27I'm glad to see you too.
09:28I'm glad to see you too.
09:29I'm glad to see you too.
09:30I'm glad to see you too.
09:31I'm glad to see you too.
09:32I'm glad to see you too.
09:33I'm glad to see you too.
09:35Mr. Carlson, some people from the Air Force are here to see you.
09:36Hello, Mr. Carlson.
09:37I'm Jake Atlin.
09:38This is Sergeant Fitz.
09:39Hi, sir.
09:40We're with Project Blue Book.
09:41This is Sergeant Hammond, our radiation safety expert.
09:42Dr. Forrest, our staff psychologist.
09:43Oh, this is my wife.
09:44Hello.
09:45And my daughter.
09:50Hi.
09:51And my son.
09:54Major, you usually take this many of your people
09:55to check on a rocket engine
09:57And my son.
09:59Major, do you usually take this many of your people to check on a report?
10:04Yes, sir. Sometimes.
10:06Obviously, you don't believe one word we said.
10:10We try not to make value judgments.
10:13We're here to investigate and to gather enough evidence to substantiate your story.
10:17Substantiate?
10:19Let me tell you something, Major.
10:22I'm the fourth generation on this land.
10:24My great-grandfather built this ranch.
10:26He had to fight the Arapaho and the Cheyenne to do it.
10:30We're God-fearing people.
10:32We work hard. We go to church regularly.
10:35And we do not cheat.
10:37And above all, we do not lie.
10:40We'd like to hear your story, Mr. Carlson.
10:42Exactly as it happened.
10:44So your psychologist there can decide if we're crazy or not?
10:48That's not the reason I'm here.
10:50The Blue Book people employ me on occasion as a consultant.
10:53Sometimes I'm able to pick up on things that the average person can't hear.
10:56In my book, doctor, that comes down to the same thing.
11:00It really doesn't, Mr. Carlson.
11:02When people are subjected to traumatic experiences,
11:05the mind has a way of closing the door on events it doesn't want to deal with.
11:09Sometimes the right questions can help open that door.
11:12Oh.
11:14Martin, tell them.
11:16Yes, sir.
11:20Well, it was the night before last.
11:22I'd just gotten home from a revival meeting over at Howard Crossing.
11:26Jeannie, my sister, had gone out to the stable to check on her horse.
11:31As Jeannie was coming back to the house,
11:33she saw this white ball of light in the sky.
11:52Help!
11:55Help!
11:59Help!
12:23Hey, come outside, everybody.
12:25You won't believe what I just saw.
12:27Mom, please.
12:31Dad, Martin, I don't know what it is.
12:40It was a big ball of light.
12:42It came right overhead and landed behind those trees.
12:45Probably a shooting star.
12:47I think you're letting all those flying saucer reports go to your head, little sister.
12:51I think it's those acting lessons you were taking over college.
12:54Well, whatever it was is gone now.
13:05I've got some fresh pound cake.
13:07I'll go fix some coffee.
13:09Good.
13:21Good.
13:39What is it?
13:40There's something outside. I don't know what it is.
13:46You stay here. Come on, Martin.
13:51Come on.
14:21Come on.
14:51Come on.
15:21Come on.
15:38Turn off all the lights. Ginny, call the sheriff.
15:47It's dead.
15:51It's dead.
16:21It's dead.
16:35We waited for an hour.
16:37Then, when nothing else happened,
16:39I ran for one of our cars and went to get help.
16:43And all of you saw these figures, whatever they were?
16:45That's right.
16:47And, Ginny, you're the only one that saw the ball of light.
16:49Yes.
16:51Mr. Carlson, what was the nature of that revival meeting you attended?
16:55What a revival meeting is.
16:57A reaffirmation of your faith in God.
17:00We didn't discuss spacemen or flying saucers, if that's what you mean.
17:04Mr. Carlson, if it's all right with you,
17:06we'd like to check out the landing area,
17:08take some soil samples, and check on any physical evidence.
17:11You go right ahead. It's your job, I guess.
17:15I'll go with you. I'll show you the spot where it landed.
17:18All right.
17:20The doctor and I have a few more questions we'd like to ask you.
17:23Fire away?
17:24Do you think it's possible that the figures you saw could have been animals?
17:27No. No, I hit that thing with a full load of double-aught buck.
17:30If it had been an animal, I'd have killed it.
17:32And that face I saw in the window was no animal.
17:35At least, nothing I've ever seen before.
17:37It was dark out there.
17:39When you fired, you could have missed.
17:41It wasn't that dark. It was a full moon.
17:43Sometimes, under certain conditions,
17:45what we think we see is really something quite different.
17:48I said it before. I'll say it now.
17:50You don't believe there's not one word of it.
17:53Mr. Carlson, what I'm trying to do
17:55is point out that everything is not black and white.
17:58You take two people who witness an accident,
18:00both reasonably intelligent with all their faculties,
18:03yet the stories they tell can be diametrically opposed.
18:06Why?
18:07Because it's just possible that subconsciously
18:10they may have interjected circumstances that they wanted to see happen.
18:13Are you saying I wanted to see these things?
18:16There is a theory that belief in extraterrestrial life
18:19has a highly religious connotation,
18:22that it strengthens one's faith in a supreme being.
18:25In my opinion, Doctor, that is pure blasphemy.
18:29I know where you're headed, but you're wrong.
18:31If it was just my sister who saw this, or me,
18:33I'd say you're entitled to your doubts.
18:35But my parents have never believed in any UFOs or things from outer space.
18:39If my father says he saw space people, sir,
18:42you'd better believe him, because it's gospel.
18:52Sergeant Fitz, could I talk to you a minute?
18:55Yes, ma'am.
19:04I'm terribly upset about this whole thing.
19:07Yes, ma'am, I can understand.
19:09It's not for myself, really.
19:11It's my parents I'm worried about.
19:13I'm afraid of what people are going to say about them.
19:16Your dad doesn't impress me as the kind of man
19:18who'd let something like that bother him.
19:20You don't know him. His reputation is his life.
19:23Every rancher around here looks to him for leadership.
19:26Anything that would damage his credibility would hurt him terribly.
19:30I understand.
19:31Running a ranch is not all fun and games.
19:34In these last couple of years, we've had more than our share of problems.
19:37What kind of problems?
19:39The drought, labor disputes,
19:41the rising price of grain and the falling price of cattle,
19:44government regulations, you name it, we've had it.
19:47Last month, we even joined a tractor strike.
19:50You having financial troubles?
19:52My father's applied for a bank loan.
19:54It's only the second time in his life.
19:56He's borrowing a great deal of money,
19:58and if the loan doesn't go through, I don't know what will happen.
20:01And you feel with all this going on,
20:03the bankers might lose faith in your dad?
20:05That's why you people have got to prove our stories true.
20:10I got no reading on the counter beyond normal background.
20:13We'll wait for the lab report and the soil samples.
20:16As far as I could tell, there was no fuel residue.
20:18But the lab will have to confirm that, too.
20:20What do you think of the Carlsons, Doctor?
20:22They seem to be a normal, well-adjusted family.
20:25The father's a bit authoritarian, but no question he runs the show.
20:28Other than that, I noticed no deviant behavior.
20:31What about the daughter?
20:33Bright, impressionable, but hardly the hysterical type.
20:36You think this group is capable of making up a story
20:39and then sticking to it as a family?
20:41Possible. They have a deep sense of loyalty to each other.
20:44But then a question arises.
20:46Why would they do it?
20:48There's that bank loan.
20:50That's always a possibility.
20:52But I can't see Frederick Carlson involving himself in that kind of fabrication
20:55just to get money.
20:57No, I think it goes a lot deeper than that.
20:59Are you talking about religion?
21:01Sergeant Fitz.
21:03They had just come back from a revival meeting.
21:05Now, I don't know if any of you gentlemen
21:07have ever been to a good old-fashioned revival,
21:09but I want to tell you it can be an emotional experience.
21:12So, let's suppose the Carlsons come home from one of these meetings,
21:16the adrenaline is flowing, they're on their own natural high,
21:19the daughter sees something we don't know what.
21:21But you couple that with worldwide reports of flying saucers,
21:24religious fervor, and a full moon,
21:26and people's imagination can really start to work overtime.
21:29You think it was their imagination?
21:31You think it was their imagination?
21:33Only a possibility.
21:35But whatever they saw, or think they saw,
21:38as far as they're concerned, they're telling the truth.
21:42That was Mrs. Greta Marshall, flying saucer factory lady.
21:46Now she wants to file a formal complaint with the SEC.
21:49But she wants to talk to us again first.
21:51First thing when we return to the base.
21:53You better make it now.
21:55She's out in the lobby.
21:57I know you can help me. That's why I came all this way.
22:00The secretary told me it would be all right.
22:02What changed your mind, Mrs. Marshall?
22:04When Alex finally drew out all of our savings
22:07to invest in the rest of that stock,
22:10I didn't like it.
22:12But it was something he wanted to do.
22:14He had such faith in it.
22:16I didn't say anything.
22:19Well, that was yesterday.
22:21But last night, he said he talked to Mr. Cochran,
22:23and he has a chance to double his investment.
22:26Major, he wants to take a second mortgage out on our house,
22:30and I can't just sit by and let that happen.
22:33I used my grocery money to take the plane here,
22:36so I'm desperate.
22:38Can you tell us any more about it?
22:40After we made our original investment,
22:42we were invited to Kansas City to see the saucer factory.
22:49When we saw that flying saucer,
22:52I have to admit it was breathtaking.
22:57Quite a sight, isn't it, folks?
22:59It sure is.
23:00Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.
23:02You're lucky people.
23:04In six months, these will be flying around the world nonstop.
23:07Every airline, every country will be flooding us with orders.
23:10That stock you have will be worth millions.
23:14Mr. Cochran, how does it work?
23:16Anti-matter.
23:18Scientists have talked about it for years,
23:20but up until now, it's only been a theory.
23:22In other worlds, however,
23:24anti-matter is an everyday energy source.
23:27I don't understand.
23:30What is anti-matter?
23:32In layman's terms,
23:34it's simply a combination of elements
23:36which forms an anti-gravitational field.
23:39We have all the elements here on Earth,
23:41we've just never been able to whip up the formula.
23:44Could we go aboard, Mr. Corker?
23:46I'm afraid not. It's in a white room.
23:48Absolute sterile conditions must be maintained at all times.
23:52Well, what's our government's position?
23:55I imagine something like this could be used as a weapon.
23:58We are working in full cooperation with the government.
24:01Every saucer will be processed by a special agency.
24:04We're like subcontractors to the government.
24:09I guess I should have asked more questions.
24:12There was so much I didn't understand.
24:14And then thinking about it later,
24:16it just didn't seem logical
24:18that the government would exercise so little control
24:21over something as important as this.
24:24You want to file a complaint, Mrs. Marshall?
24:26Yes. Yes, now I do.
24:34Operator, would you please get me Gordon Sandler
24:36in the local FBI field office in Dayton, Ohio?
24:42I thought maybe you'd like to see this.
24:44We got it with our stock certificate.
24:47Is this what you saw at the factory?
24:49Yes, it is.
25:00Hello, Gordon. How are you?
25:02Fine, Jake. Yourself?
25:04What are you doing out in Wyoming? As if I couldn't guess.
25:07You guessed. I think I have something for you.
25:10Go ahead.
25:11Do you have any input on Advanced Aerodynamics Corporation?
25:15Some kind of stock promotion, I think.
25:17We've heard some rumbles.
25:18A man by the name of Daryl Cochran
25:20is selling stock in a flying saucer factory.
25:22I have a Mrs. Greta Marshall here with me.
25:25Her husband has invested heavily in this scheme
25:27and she wants to file a complaint.
25:29All right. How do you want to handle it?
25:31You want me to contact the field office out there?
25:33No, Mrs. Marshall lives in Dayton.
25:35Where is this factory located?
25:37Kansas City, Missouri.
25:39Are you willing to work with us on this one, Jake?
25:41We could use your expertise.
25:43Are you invoking posse comitatus?
25:45Right. You give us an assist, we'll handle everything else.
25:47Be a pleasure.
25:48You'll be working with Walter Hillman
25:49out of our Kansas City office.
25:51I'll make the arrangements.
25:52Right.
25:54Okay. Thanks, Gordon.
25:57Okay, Mrs. Marshall.
25:58You go to the local FBI office in Dayton.
26:00You see Gordon Sandler.
26:02He'll help you file a complaint
26:03and you take your stock certificate with you.
26:05Gordon Sandler.
26:06Yes, ma'am.
26:07Now, do you think that Mr. Sandler
26:08can get us our money back?
26:10I don't know, but he'll sure keep you from losing any more.
26:12Oh, thank you.
26:13You're welcome.
26:14Bye.
26:15Goodbye.
26:16Bye.
26:18I've seen this someplace, but I can't remember where.
26:21I got the same feeling, Major.
26:25Wonder if I might turn the beds down.
26:27Be all right?
26:28What's that?
26:29If I might turn the beds down.
26:30If so, I can get off early.
26:32It's okay. Go ahead.
26:33Thanks.
26:34I want to watch the late, late movie on TV.
26:36Wait a minute. That's where it is.
26:37Movies.
26:38I've seen this in a movie.
26:39Right. An old one.
26:40It was on the Lace Show last week.
26:43I got it.
26:44The Day the Earth Trembled.
26:45Let's get on the phone and find the studio that made the film
26:48and see if they still own the saucer.
26:50And if they don't, maybe we know who does.
26:52You'll love the picture.
26:54The spaceship lands right in the middle of Central Park
26:56and then this tall man comes up.
26:58Yes, ma'am. We saw it.
26:59Oh, are you interested in flying saucers, too?
27:02How much do you know about them?
27:04Well, not a whole lot, ma'am.
27:12And you believe the Carlson story.
27:14Is that right?
27:15No reason not to.
27:16I've known Fred Carlson all my life.
27:18Never seen him lie or even exaggerate.
27:21If he says it happened, I'll believe him.
27:23Yes, sir.
27:24I saw a UFO myself last week.
27:26A little past midnight.
27:27Big silvery-looking thing.
27:29Followed my car for half a mile, then...
27:31whoosh!
27:32Just took off.
27:33They're all around us, you know.
27:35No doubt about that.
27:36Sheriff, what about animals not native to this area?
27:39Does anyone own any kind of exotic pets?
27:43No, not that I can think of.
27:47Oh, now, wait a minute.
27:49I just remembered.
27:51A couple of months ago,
27:53a small traveling circus come through here.
27:55Two of their chimpanzees escaped.
27:57You know, monkeys.
27:58We looked for them for days.
28:00Never could find them.
28:01You trying to say that's what Carlson saw?
28:03I don't know it's possible.
28:05Well, thanks for your time, Sheriff.
28:07One more question, Sheriff.
28:08What about the Carlson's financial condition?
28:10Oh, not good, not bad,
28:11like most of the ranchers around here.
28:13Last couple of years, been pretty rough.
28:15You might talk to Arnold Porter.
28:16He'd know more about that.
28:18Yes, sir.
28:19Who's Arnold Porter?
28:20He's president of the bank.
28:22Handles all of Carlson's business affairs.
28:25Thanks again.
28:27Can I give you boys a little friendly advice?
28:30Sure.
28:31We all like the Carlson's.
28:33They're good, upstanding people.
28:35We wouldn't want to see anybody coming around
28:37trying to make problems for them.
28:39No, sir.
28:40Neither would we.
29:01Mr. Porter?
29:02Yes.
29:03Oh, you're Major Gatlin.
29:05You're Sergeant Fitz.
29:07Sit down, if you please.
29:10Sheriff Liggett called me.
29:12I understand you're interested in the financial condition
29:14of the Carlson family.
29:16Yes, sir, we are.
29:17We understand ranchers are having problems,
29:19not just here, but all over the country.
29:21Yes, you could say that about farming all the time.
29:24But as far as the Carlson's are concerned,
29:26they have a very large ranch.
29:28They could sell off a few hundred acres
29:30without hardly missing it.
29:32Why would they want to sell?
29:34I didn't say they would.
29:35I said they could.
29:37Major, set your mind at ease.
29:39This bank has loaned Mr. Carlson money before,
29:42but we were never concerned in the least about a payback.
30:07Yes, Lord Farnsworth,
30:08we have the 10,000 shares of stock
30:10set aside in your corporate name.
30:12Yes, sir, that'll be fine.
30:15Oh, by the way, how's the weather in London?
30:18Well, it always is this time of year, isn't it?
30:21Nice talking to you, sir.
30:23I'll see you next week in Paris.
30:25Goodbye, sir.
30:26Goodbye.
30:27Goodbye.
30:28Goodbye.
30:29Goodbye.
30:30Goodbye.
30:31Goodbye.
30:32Goodbye.
30:33Goodbye.
30:34Goodbye.
30:35Goodbye, sir.
30:38Can I help you?
30:39Yes, sir, I hope so.
30:41I'm looking for Mr. Daryl Cochran.
30:47What do you want with him?
30:49My name's Bill Thomas.
30:50I'm only going to be in Kansas City a couple days,
30:53and I'd like to talk to Mr. Cochran.
30:55How interesting.
30:56Why?
30:57Well, I was talking to Alex and Greta Marshall
30:59before I left home,
31:01and they told me about your plans.
31:03I gotta tell you, I'm excited about this.
31:05Excited about what?
31:07The factory, the flying saucers.
31:09You're a friend of the Marshalls?
31:10Sure am.
31:11Alex and I belong to a great many saucer clubs.
31:14We subscribe to all the literature.
31:16Alex just told me about this,
31:18and I want to get in on it.
31:20Well, Mr...
31:21What did you say your name was?
31:22Bill Thomas.
31:23Well, Mr. Thomas,
31:25we have what you might call a closed corporation right now.
31:28We're oversubscribed.
31:30Oh, well, I'm sorry to hear that.
31:32You see, Alex is having trouble with his wife,
31:34and if I could go back to Dayton
31:36and give her some assurance...
31:38Besides, I really won't in.
31:40I have the money.
31:42I see.
31:44Well, Mr. Thomas,
31:45would you happen to have the Marshalls' phone number?
31:48Yes, sir.
31:49They live on Bradford Avenue in Dayton, Ohio.
31:52The number is 555-3712.
31:58And I'd still like to say hello to Mr. Cochran.
32:00He's busy dialing the phone.
32:02He'll talk to you in a minute.
32:10And Cochran bought it?
32:12Yes, sir, after he phoned Marshall.
32:14We were a little concerned.
32:16We had to have a long talk with Alex Marshall to set this up.
32:19He's positive he's in on a moneymaker,
32:21so the only reason he'd go along
32:23is to make liars out of all of us.
32:25I'm supposed to be there first thing tomorrow morning
32:27with the money, cash.
32:29I don't have the stock certificates ready.
32:31And since I'm leaving town,
32:33I'll get to see the saucer right away.
32:36We'll need $10,000.
32:38No sweat.
32:39Ron, handle it.
32:41Mark bills, small denominations.
32:44We'll have the office staked out.
32:46You'll be wired when you go in there.
32:50We'll be able to hear everything that goes on.
32:52And we'll be right on Cochran's doorstep, Sergeant.
32:55Ron, what are we rolling on this job?
32:58A repair truck.
32:59Okay, that's it.
33:01Yes, sir, I understand.
33:03Cochran's got a record.
33:04Goes back a long way.
33:06How much do you think he's pulled in on this scheme?
33:08Our intelligence says he's suckered maybe 300, 400 people.
33:12At $10,000 a crack,
33:14you're looking at better than $3 million.
33:18It's always hard for me to believe
33:20there's so many gullible people.
33:22I don't see why.
33:24You're one, aren't you, Mr. Thomas?
33:28Yeah.
33:52You read okay?
33:55If so, hit your foot brake.
33:59Okay.
34:12Roll tape, Bob.
34:23Good morning, Mr. Thomas. Right on time.
34:25Yes, sir.
34:28I have all the papers filled out
34:30and your stock certificate ready.
34:34You did bring the money.
34:36Yes, sir. It's right here.
34:42Phyllis, would you put this in the safe?
34:48Would you sign this, please, Mr. Thomas?
34:50Yes, sir.
34:55Here's your stock, Mr. Thomas.
34:57Congratulations.
34:58Thank you, Mr. Cochran.
35:00When can I see the saucer?
35:01Right now. Come with me.
35:07Federal Bureau of Investigation.
35:09Dale Cochran?
35:11That's right.
35:12We have a warrant for your arrest.
35:14On what charge?
35:16Stock fraud, misrepresentation.
35:19I'll read you your rights.
35:20Save it.
35:21I know I'm...
35:23I'm entitled to an attorney,
35:24everything I say you can use and on and on.
35:27Let's go see your flying saucer.
35:31May I have the money, please?
35:51Very impressive.
35:54Let's all go take a closer look.
35:56No, you can't go in there.
35:57It's a white room. It's sterile.
35:59You better close that door.
36:03We talked to the motion picture studio
36:05where you purchased this saucer, among other things.
36:08They auctioned off this particular piece some time ago.
36:11If that thing gets off the ground, you're home free.
36:14I'm going to prison for that.
36:37Oh, yes, sir. Come in.
36:39Hello, Mrs. Carlson.
36:44Well, Kenny, I didn't expect to see you here.
36:48Why not?
36:49Our organization gets these reports almost as fast as you do.
36:53You didn't want to waste any time capitalizing on this one, right?
36:56That has a very bad connotation, Jake.
36:59Mr. Carlson, we came back to discuss our laboratory findings with you.
37:03Good.
37:04I'm sure we'd all be interested to hear what the Air Force has discovered.
37:08All our reports are negative, sir.
37:10No signs of radiation.
37:12No indication of a landing, such as depressions in the ground, fuel residue, or burn marks.
37:18No broken bushes or limbs of trees.
37:21No unidentified footprints.
37:24Exactly what I told you they'd say.
37:25In other words, the Air Force is calling me and my family liars.
37:30No, sir.
37:31We're just saying that we can't corroborate a sighting or an encounter without hard physical
37:36evidence.
37:37Well, Sergeant, do you believe we're capable of making up such a story?
37:40No, ma'am.
37:41Without evidence, there's nothing we can do.
37:43You say there's no evidence, huh?
37:46What about that?
37:47You think we shot out that window just for the exercise?
37:50That's evidence of a shotgun blast, but it doesn't tell us what you were firing at.
37:55Major, the other night, my father and I saw those things.
38:01We saw these creatures coming at us.
38:04They were like nothing I've ever seen in my life.
38:08We shot at them, but it didn't affect them.
38:13I can't tell you what they were, but they sure weren't from this Earth.
38:19Every night, we live in fear.
38:22I don't know what they wanted from us, but they could come back.
38:26And I don't know why the Air Force chooses the position it does, but as far as I am concerned,
38:31we have only two alternatives.
38:34We're either telling the truth, or we're lying.
38:36There's a third.
38:37Maybe you didn't see what you think you saw.
38:41Would you like to explain that?
38:42Yes, sir.
38:43Take that ball of light that Jeannie saw.
38:46It could be what we call a parasolene, or a moondog, a precise reflection of the moon.
38:51As for creatures, we learned a couple of chimpanzees escaped from a circus that came through here
38:56not too long ago.
38:57Moondogs, chimpanzees, come on, Gatlin.
39:01Do you really expect us to buy that?
39:03And what are you buying, Kenny?
39:05There's a lot of money to be made from this, where you're concerned.
39:09Don't listen to them.
39:10This is typical Air Force strategy.
39:12They'll stop at nothing to cover up a story.
39:14They can't solve it, they put a lid on it.
39:17I can live with ridicule, and I can live with the fact that a lot of people won't believe
39:21my story, but what I cannot live with is the thought that I could be considered a liar,
39:26a man who lied just to make a dollar.
39:28But that's not the case, Mr. Carlson.
39:31Well, you know that, and I know it, but what the major said makes sense.
39:34There are going to be a lot of people who think it.
39:38I'm sorry, Professor, but our deal is off.
39:41You're being very foolish.
39:42Rest your case with the public.
39:44Let them decide.
39:45Then you tell them.
39:47My family and I, we are out of it.
39:51I spent a lifetime in this community building a reputation for decency and for honesty,
39:56and I won't have it destroyed for the sake of making money.
40:00But, Major, what happened to us did happen, and that can never change.
40:07You know, I really am whipped, sir.
40:30Why don't you ask the stewardess for a pillow, grab a little sleep?
40:34You've got time.
40:35No, sir.
40:36Can't sleep on a plane.
40:38Never could, even before I joined up.
40:40You're probably overtired now.
40:42Yes, sir.
40:43Next chance I get, I'm going into an 18-hour coma.
40:47Pardon me, Major.
40:51The captain would like to see you up front.
40:53Sure.
40:54Now's your chance.
40:57Grab that pillow.
40:58Like I said, sir, never could sleep on an aircraft, not even fly on a mission.
41:05This is Captain Gordon, this is First Officer Frank King, Flight Engineer John Davis, Major
41:27Gatlin.
41:28How are you, Major?
41:29Hi.
41:30Well, I'll leave you flyboys to your war stories.
41:31John, you want to go on air so I can make a little talk with the Air Force?
41:35Coffee, Major?
41:36Yes.
41:37Flight, please.
41:38Three coffee.
41:39Yeah.
41:40Good to have you aboard, Major.
41:41Appreciate the up-front view, Captain.
41:42I see you fly command.
41:44Not much anymore.
41:45Fly desk most of the time.
41:47Where do you fly?
41:48When do you fly?
41:49These days?
41:50T-39s, F-5s, T-33s.
41:54Respectable aircraft, all.
41:56Me and Joe Carver, Philadelphia.
41:58Nice name, nice city.
42:01And where are you from, Sergeant?
42:02Six miles South Carolina.
42:03Northern part of the state.
42:04Sounds like a small town.
42:06But big in heart.
42:08You staying over in Salt Lake?
42:10No.
42:11Two-hour turnaround and back to Reno.
42:13Gee, it's too bad.
42:14Oh?
42:15Why?
42:16Your ribbons, I see you have a green and white with a silver bar.
42:18Why were you driving in Southeast Asia?
42:21F-105 squadron.
42:22Mm, Thunder Chiefs, huh?
42:23You light off the back burner in one of those birds and you're long gone.
42:26Speed of light, man.
42:27They're swift.
42:28You're mostly GDO now, huh?
42:30Foreign Technology Division.
42:31Back in Ohio.
42:32Ooh, right, Patterson Field.
42:34Home of the UFO, huh?
42:35Is that it?
42:36That's it.
42:37Well, I thought since we were going to Salt Lake,
42:39we might amble over to the Mormon Tabernacle.
42:41You know, listen to the choir, something like that.
42:44Something like that?
42:45Yeah, they really come on.
42:47Over 200 voices strong.
42:49They also have one of the biggest pipe organs in the world.
42:52Is that right?
42:54You know, I guess I've logged over 20,000 hours
42:56and I've never seen anything yet that I couldn't explain.
42:59Good for you.
43:00But I guess they keep you people hopping, huh?
43:02Enter America, Flight 574, Salt Lake Center.
43:05Over.
43:06Salt Lake, this is 574.
43:08Go ahead.
43:09574, Salt Lake.
43:11You'll be cleared for descent after passage Bonneville Omni.
43:14Report out of flight level 370.
43:16Over.
43:17Salt Lake, 574.
43:18Will do.
43:19We estimate Bonneville fix in nine minutes.
43:23Roger, 574.
43:24Oh, yeah.
43:25And the tabernacle itself?
43:27It was built by Brigham Young.
43:29It was constructed back in the 1800s.
43:31And the way the doors are designed,
43:33they all swing out for quick exit in case of fire.
43:36You know so much about it.
43:38I really feel like I've been there.
43:40You do?
43:41I sure do.
43:43Now I won't have to go, will I?
43:45I better go sit with the major.
43:59He gets airsick, you know.
44:01Look, there it is again.
44:15It's a real flying saucer.
44:17Oh, just look at it.
44:20It must be at least 200 feet long.
44:33We should be where the Bonneville flat's about now.
44:36Lake beds.
44:37They had weather up here about a week ago, memory serves.
44:40Those lake beds are usually dry.
44:42But since it rained, it only takes a couple of inches to make the mirror.
44:46Stewardess.
44:47Stewardess.
44:48What's the trouble, Mrs. Jameson?
44:50Will you tell the pilot that we're being chased by a flying saucer?
44:54Look for yourself.
44:55See it down there?
44:57It's a flying saucer.
45:00It keeps getting closer and then zooming away.
45:07Excuse me, Mrs. Jameson.
45:09That isn't a flying saucer, ma'am.
45:11Why, look at it.
45:13Don't tell me, young man.
45:14Have you ever seen one?
45:16No, ma'am, but I believe I can explain what you're seeing there.
45:19You don't have to explain to me.
45:20I have perfect eyesight.
45:22It's a flying saucer if I ever saw one, and I am now.
45:26No, ma'am, what you're seeing there is a reflection of the moon.
45:29The moon?
45:30Well, how can that be?
45:32The moon's not down there.
45:34There is no airplane that flies above the moon.
45:37If you look up as high as you can, you'll see the real moon.
45:41See it up there?
45:42It's a full moon, and its reflection is being picked up off the water in the lakebeds below.
45:49Really?
45:50Well, then why does it get larger and then smaller?
45:52Those clouds below the airplane, you see them?
45:54Here it comes.
45:56The saucer's getting bigger now.
45:58Those are called high cirrus clouds, Mrs. Jameson.
46:01They're composed mostly of ice crystals,
46:03making them highly reflective and equally distortive.
46:06When we pass over the clouds, the reflection appears larger.
46:09When we hit a break in the cloud cover, the reflection grows smaller,
46:12giving the effect of coming closer to us and then moving away.
46:15Is that clear, Mrs. Jameson?
46:17About like mud.
46:20May I, Major?
46:23You see, ma'am, those clouds?
46:26It's like holding a magnifying glass over the reflection.
46:29Then taking it away, it gets smaller, right?
46:32Wrong.
46:33Take a look out there now.
46:34It's gone.
46:35See?
46:36Now we'll never know.
46:45The stewardess.
46:48They're from the Air Force.
46:50They always lie about flying saucers.
47:06Yes?
47:08There's a Mr. Alex Marshall to see you.
47:10Send Mr. Marshall in.
47:12Probably wants to thank us for saving his house.
47:15Major Gatlin?
47:17I'm Major Gatlin. This is Sergeant Fitz.
47:19I could have made a fortune on that stock if you hadn't butted in.
47:22Mr. Marshall, the whole thing was a fake.
47:24The flying saucer was nothing but a piece of motion picture hardware, a phony.
47:28How would you know that?
47:30Did you give him a chance to show you if it would fly?
47:32I'll tell you what I'm gonna do.
47:34I'm gonna get myself a lawyer, and I'm gonna sue.
47:37Why can't you Air Force people mind your own business?
