00:00Joining me here, welcome to Headbangers Ball you guys, how are you doing?
00:07Good.
00:08Good.
00:09Fine.
00:10Wonderful.
00:11Feeling good.
00:12Good.
00:13Now there's a lot to talk about with Danzig, obviously the new album, new tour, and I've
00:17got to start at the beginning really, and my first question is you had a little bit
00:21of a drummer dilemma after the recording of the Four album, so could you explain why you
00:26parted company with Chuck Biscuit?
00:30It's pretty simple, Chuck had a lot of personal problems and just didn't want to remain in
00:36the band, eventually he quit the band, then he wanted to rejoin and we couldn't work out
00:44the problems we had with him also, and we just got another drummer, it was as simple
00:49as that.
00:50But he has been in the band since the beginning, back in 1988, the first line-up change for
00:55Danzig, so how unsettling was it, just even on the personal level, that he was a friend?
01:01Joey kind of stepped right in, just like we had planned, we all thought that we'd get
01:05somebody and we wouldn't break stride, and we pretty much did that, so there hasn't been
01:10much of an adjustment.
01:11Personally, we're still friends with Chuck, we still care about him and stuff, but he's
01:17just not in the band anymore.
01:19But we got lucky with Joey.
01:21This is Joey Castillo, who used to be in Sugar Tooth, right?
01:24Yeah, and before that he used to be in punk bands.
01:28Mino, Erie and I are both from punk history, so I get along with him really well.
01:34Yeah, I think he's a great guy.
01:36We have a lot in common.
01:38Most of the bands I hate, he hates, and most of the bands we like are pretty similar, so
01:45it's pretty easy, it couldn't be better, actually.
01:51And he's a nice guy, without slagging Chuck, he doesn't really have any personal problems,
01:59he's just a nice, normal, easy going guy.
02:02Well adjusted for a drummer, you know, it's very rare, I think we might have found one
02:05of the rare well adjusted ones.
02:07I don't know what it is with drummers, but bands just traditionally don't really have
02:11good luck with drummers.
02:13I think in Sam Hayne we went through two or three, in Misfits we had about seven.
02:19Everybody's got the same story about some drummer or something.
02:22Slayer's on about three or four now.
02:24Yeah, they've got a new drummer, I was just talking to them a few weeks ago actually.
02:27I mean, just going back to Chuck though, the thing about Chuck that I always felt was that
02:31he was a very flamboyant person, he had a lot of presence on stage.
02:37Were you at all concerned that you were going to lose that side of it?
02:41No, because actually people tell us Joey looks a lot better in the band.
02:46You fit right in.
02:47Yeah.
02:48OK, well we're going into the video for Mother very shortly and I'd just like to sort of
02:52backtrack a little bit before we start talking about the Four album.
02:56Obviously you wrote that song back in 1988 and...
03:00Six, 87, before the album came out.
03:04A lot of people think just when the album comes out that's when you wrote the song.
03:07No, you wrote it before.
03:09OK, but it's taken a number of years for that song to be a success, as it was for you,
03:15Off Thrall, Demon Sweat Live.
03:17So what factors do you think finally contributed to that song being a success?
03:21I've heard so many different things.
03:23Maybe this band just stayed together long enough for people to catch up.
03:29A lot of people are scared of us, so that doesn't help.
03:32So maybe this time around they weren't so scared or whatever it is, I have no idea.
03:38Do you think maybe that song was a little bit ahead of its time?
03:41I guess it could, you know.
03:43And of course you also had the fantastic live video to go with it as well,
03:47which I think drew a lot of attention to it.
03:49Yeah, that's a really funny story because I was recording all the shows,
03:54even when we were back in Europe at the time we did that interview,
03:57I was recording all the shows and filming them,
04:00and then I wanted to film Irvine on Halloween,
04:03and they didn't want us to do any of that filming,
04:06and it ended up being the video.
04:10Well it's a fantastic video and we're going to show it to you right now.
04:13This is Mother 90s style.
