00:00:00So Rugby World Cup's quarterfinals begin, and Scotland almost traditionally kick away
00:00:18from the forwards to begin this match.
00:00:21And Gavin Hastings, who may play a big part in the play from the Watsonians Club in Edinburgh,
00:00:27has a big kick to begin with, and that's one they usually start with, so that the opposition
00:00:31kick back to them.
00:00:32And that will be done by New Zealand's number 10, Grant Fox.
00:00:35Deflected by Gary Whetton onto the New Zealand side, there's the New Zealand captain, David
00:00:50Kirk.
00:00:51With the high ball, right under it and waiting, is Hastings.
00:00:57He's put it out on the full, so Hastings has had a steady start with the kick-off and the
00:01:03catch, but not good in the kicking department.
00:01:05No, he would have wished that he had kept that in, because you like always in that first
00:01:09few minutes to do everything dead right.
00:01:11And that will have upset him slightly, particularly with the pressure on in this game.
00:01:14So at the back four, Scotland number 7, as Finlay called away to the right, Scotland
00:01:17in the dark blue.
00:01:18And remember, playing in all white today.
00:01:25Sean Fitzpatrick throws, Kirk, Fox, he found Fox, this is Warwick-Taylor, late tackle,
00:01:30oh no, back of the line out it was.
00:01:33Ian Paxton, number 8, is penalised, the early penalty goes to New Zealand, and I think the
00:01:37replay may show a late tackle on David Kirk, but then it also looked as though there might
00:01:42have been one out on Grant Fox.
00:01:44Yes, it was certainly getting late on Grant Fox too.
00:01:52So this is big Ian Paxton, with him is big Ian Milne, and here is Grant Fox.
00:01:57That's the halfway line behind him.
00:02:06I would suggest that this is almost at the far range of Fox's kicking ability.
00:02:11It's just about three yards inside the Scottish half.
00:02:23Remember, Grant Fox is the man who has a set breathing pattern, a set rhythmical step back
00:02:28from the ball, any tension or tightness in his body, he shakes out through his fingers.
00:02:42So he was tight on that one, and Gavin Hastings in the game again with a fair catch down out
00:02:51from his goal line, so not a good beginning there for Fox, he was underneath that ball,
00:02:55it seemed to spin end-to-end hinting that he was underneath the ball, maybe teed it
00:03:00up a bit too high, and there's another wobbly one from Hastings heading back to the touchline.
00:03:05He's certainly not timing it well yet, there's a fair bit of pressure on him.
00:03:11Let's have a look into the grounds down to the New Zealand coach behind the hall,
00:03:14the non-playing New Zealand team members there.
00:03:19It's outside the 22.
00:03:22Well, that's a good take at the front from Steve McDowell.
00:03:26Shelford, corner flag coming up.
00:03:30And Alan Whetton, very close to scoring in the corner, what a good start for the All Blacks.
00:03:35Yes, that was quick thinking, and that's just the start they needed.
00:03:42No score in the match, but the first chance coming, perhaps, for the New Zealand team.
00:03:47Defected to Laidlaw.
00:03:53And Roy Laidlaw, the half-back, a veteran of 42 internationals, elected to kick from
00:03:58that very tight situation behind his own goal line.
00:04:01Scotland still hard up in defence.
00:04:12New Zealand have it, corner flag is up top, right in your picture.
00:04:18Coming for Kirk, Fox, Taylor.
00:04:24Kerwin, loose ball.
00:04:26Number 12 is John Rutherford, just really standing there.
00:04:31No, they got mixed up there a wee bit.
00:04:33No-one really knew quite what was on.
00:04:35And that again is tension.
00:04:37Scottish front row on this side.
00:04:39David Sowell.
00:04:42Ian Milne on the far side.
00:04:43Colin Deane's between them.
00:04:46Kirk running wide.
00:04:47To Gallagher, the running full-back.
00:04:50Again.
00:04:53Good position for New Zealand.
00:04:54John Drake coming away, but Scrum called.
00:04:58Maybe they lost it forward in there.
00:05:00Yes, that's what he suggested.
00:05:05The back to Gainsborough again on this front row as you can see.
00:05:10Shoving over the mark.
00:05:14Won't sit steady.
00:05:16And these front rows hate giving up.
00:05:18They're not giving up.
00:05:20They're not giving up.
00:05:22And they're not giving up.
00:05:24Won't sit steady.
00:05:26And these front rows hate giving away.
00:05:28Even a yard at this point.
00:05:30Particularly at this stage of the game too.
00:05:33It's John Drake on the near side against David Sowell.
00:05:36Now you can be penalised for charging in.
00:05:38But referee Burnett's just sorting it out.
00:05:40Fitzpatrick, the New Zealand hooker.
00:05:42McDowell on the far side.
00:05:48That's the word really.
00:05:50No concession in the front rows.
00:05:52And neither side will want to give away.
00:05:54Scotland have a very fine Scrum indeed.
00:05:56Wales felt it in the last Five Nations Championship.
00:06:01Six minutes gone.
00:06:03Scotland holding a big shove.
00:06:05Paxton caught by Kirk.
00:06:07Number six is Turnbull, the new man.
00:06:09And a defensive penalty.
00:06:11Hands in there.
00:06:13You can see that's the signal from referee Burnett.
00:06:17Yet I felt that the other Scottish player,
00:06:19the blindside flanker, should never have dived in there
00:06:21once he was on the ground.
00:06:23He's going to the one yard area as we say in this country.
00:06:39So this is what it's all about.
00:06:41Down to the last eight teams in Rugby's World Cup.
00:06:43New Zealand against Scotland.
00:06:45Live from Lancaster Park in Christchurch.
00:06:47There's Steve McDowell who got a good ball at the front early on.
00:06:49Murray Pearce behind.
00:06:51Then Drake bending over, Gary Whitton.
00:06:57New Zealand's side.
00:06:59Derek White is number four for Scotland.
00:07:01Fox to Warwick Taylor at halfway.
00:07:03Joe Stanley crashing back in the centre.
00:07:07Paxton, see the Scottish forwards were holding off there.
00:07:09Look at Shelford again.
00:07:15Blindside, Kirk.
00:07:17That was good play there by New Zealand.
00:07:19Particularly by Shelford.
00:07:21He's going in low.
00:07:23Actually the New Zealand forwards are driving in a lot lower
00:07:25than the Scots.
00:07:27It makes a big difference when you're trying to get forward
00:07:29like that.
00:07:31That's what provided the good ball.
00:07:33I thought it was a good option by Fox to chip over the top
00:07:35then too from that run.
00:07:37Well the injury is to Scotland's hooker,
00:07:39and that's what provided the good ball.
00:07:41I thought it was a good option by Fox to chip over the top
00:07:43then too from that run.
00:07:45It would have meant a lot of resistance at the end.
00:07:47Resistance at the end.
00:07:49I won't occlude there that that situation would have made
00:07:51a big difference to Scotland's hooker and Captain Colin
00:07:53Kolindines.
00:07:55Already he is the most capped hooker from any country in
00:07:57rugby.
00:07:59With his
00:08:0152nd international today.
00:08:09No score in the match.
00:08:11Nine minutes of play.
00:08:15that's Patrick thrown wetten bobble ball comes a little bit of a lottery there and there was a
00:08:25knock on Scotland put in. It was interesting to note from that lineup just finished that
00:08:32the New Zealand backline was very deep to attack. Laidlaw Scotland still in defense the early
00:08:39moments territorially favor New Zealand Gavin Hastings. Well he's as big as a number eight
00:08:50forward isn't he at 15 stone and six foot two that's 96 kilometers kilograms and one meter 88
00:08:57Gavin Hastings. New Zealand is still very deep out of your picture here on the left the backs that is
00:09:08okay so they want to run it. No it's a high hoist for Hastings. Taylor who makes the specialty of
00:09:19being up under the kicks. Laidlaw behind the 22. Excellent play by Hastings. He's never took his eyes off
00:09:33the ball. So see the way those New Zealand backs are lining out a quick throw in no that's the
00:09:41thing that has got to be watched for from the New Zealanders. Scotland tend to take the quick
00:09:46kickoffs and the tricky kickoffs we have the lineup specialty of that Earl Curtin. Well it means
00:09:50that psychologically we're a bit worried about them in the lineup so we've gone for options and
00:09:54variations and so we should. On halfway Whetton number five that's Gary Whetton. It's untidy ball
00:10:03again. Tomes back to Wiley. That's Craig Green the New Zealand left winger. You hear the applause in the
00:10:14crowd he's one of the two Canterbury men today but it's coming for Roy Laidlaw. Keith Robertson
00:10:19tightness number 13. Robertson kicked wide and out on the ball. Yes they still maintain their ground
00:10:30and that's what Scotland were after there. It was a good win on that ruck for Scotland. It's rare that
00:10:36you see New Zealand take it in and lose it. So there he is at the front he often calls out to
00:10:42the opposition not going to hurry up and get it in. Soule against McDowell at the front behind
00:10:50them. The blonde man to the right is White.
00:11:04So does big Ian Milne. Here's the clearance kick for position from Grant Fox.
00:11:12Pearce is doing very well at the front of the line outs. He's not actually taking two hands but
00:11:19he's taking good deflections. That is number two back in the lineup. Here he is here with the sweat
00:11:25band. Eames or Paxton lost it onto the New Zealand side taken by Alan Whetton. Kirk to Sean Fitzpatrick.
00:11:42Good busting stuff from Sean Fitzpatrick and David Kirk. They're the club mates from Auckland from the
00:11:48University Club. He's rather surprised to get it there. He's just a wee bit high when he drove in.
00:11:57That was definitely a fair call. Whitton lay all over Paxton there.
00:12:27Whitton that's turned on the new man through. Oh he had a big chance to make good ground there.
00:12:45They didn't see that apparently lost forward. Yes Burnett didn't miss that knock forward by the Scots.
00:12:56No he hasn't. To give him his credit in June he's come back in the first knock along. Well played Burnett.
00:13:03Dave Burnett from Ireland. All the referees from the four home unions are being used for these
00:13:10quarterfinals. Still no score in this Rugby World Cup quarterfinal. Wayne Shelford off the back.
00:13:18Opposite number eight is Ian Paxton. It's there for Kirk. Kirwin closing on Hastings.
00:13:28So too is Taylor. He's under most high kicks when he's playing. Taylor is down number 12.
00:13:33Took a bump. Let's see what Roy Laidlaw can do. Now to Wiley. Keith Robertson. Tate is left out.
00:13:39Hastings is up and through. Deflected by Green near halfway. David Kirk
00:13:47and Wiley it is who comes across and puts it out.
00:13:57This is Doug Wiley who came into the Scottish team this year as a centre but he's got the
00:14:03enormous job because that number 10 jersey for Scotland has been in combination with John
00:14:08Rutherford's worn it with Roy Laidlaw 34 times and this is the first major game Scotland have
00:14:14contemplated without that tremendous combination of Roy Laidlaw and John Rutherford. Yes there's
00:14:19certainly been a marvellous force in European rugby and the Scots really will miss Rutherford.
00:14:24It's not that Wiley plays poorly. He plays well. Rutherford has just that extra bit of flair and
00:14:29bit of pace. It's interesting too that you notice that New Zealand scrum is going far better in this
00:14:36early period than I believe they were capable of. The tight five must be playing very well
00:14:41to be giving Scotland stick at this time of the game. Great effort. Warwick Taylor seemed to come
00:14:49down uncomfortably under that high kick but he is now restored it seems. Back foot in New Zealand
00:14:55put in no score in this match and 15 minutes of play. So it's a quick heel straight past Shelford
00:15:01to Kirk. Away to Fox. Taylor left out. Ruts rather sensibly. Gallagher up from fullback. That's
00:15:05halfway. Here's Taylor. It's down there. And that's against David Sowell. And David Sowell.
00:15:25I think might have been giving it a bit of the old scarper there.
00:15:28That's right. So now let's look at the situation, the discussion here between
00:15:35Kirk and Fox. And Fox will kick the goal again.
00:15:45That's the position for the second attempt of goal from Fox.
00:15:48Well this is the first close-up view we have of Grant Fox today. Incredible performance in the
00:15:59Rugby World Cup. He's averaging over 23 points per game. Equal the world record. He has this
00:16:06business of breathing. Certain number of breaths on the way back. Certain number of steps. Exactly
00:16:10the same each time. And then the shaking of the hands at the back. Just touching his shorts
00:16:15sometimes. Just to relieve the tension that might be tingling within him. Grant Fox second attempt
00:16:21at goal today. Now he's short for the second time. And Hastings makes the clearance.
00:16:40Well really they're right on the extent of his range aren't they? And he hasn't looked like
00:16:46hitting it right yet. No he's actually quite tense. He's not really striking the ball well. Even
00:16:51though they're going short. He's not really hitting them well yet. And maybe he's too frightened to
00:16:55hit it too hard anyhow. Because we know these Mitre balls don't carry as well when you punch them.
00:17:02Again short to McDowell at the front. Oh that one was nudged by
00:17:06David Kirk. And lost forward to chance for Scotland. And here is a surprise. Bernie
00:17:12McCargill down on the sideline. Warming up for New Zealand. Looks like Warwick Taylor
00:17:16could be in a bit of bother. He might have given the message that he might be in strife.
00:17:21Oh look at that on the far side. Now is it trouble?
00:17:38Well I think the Scottish team took exception. Well there you are see it's all mates really.
00:17:42David Soule number one helped Drake up. It looked like an all-in ball there for a minute.
00:17:47But really it was the New Zealanders I think annoying the Scots for pushing over the mark.
00:17:51Let's see what the two Irish referees here. Hilditch, Steve Hilditch on the right
00:17:55in discussion with Dave Burnett. Let's see what they come up with here.
00:18:05Colin Deane's looking anxious. This is the longest discussion I've seen over the flag
00:18:11being out on the World Cup. Let's have a look now. Kirk and Deane's from referee Burnett.
00:18:17Actually I thought it was just a flashpoint. I just think they pushed the Scottish scrum back.
00:18:24It was a good scrum for New Zealand and they fell over and they got upset.
00:18:27Okay he's going to introduce him to someone. He's just pointed to the man.
00:18:34And it's a penalty against the New Zealand team. Here it is and I think when the whistle went from
00:18:38the referee the New Zealand team pushed on. Now let's have a look in there and see if somebody
00:18:42got any problems. And then there was this bit of nudging and carrying on
00:18:47but it seemed to be a lot of arms and legs and limbs waving. Nothing really connecting.
00:18:53The penalty has been kicked up to this new set position
00:18:56in this quarterfinal and the first quarter of the match is nearly over.
00:19:03So Warwick Taylor. Now that is a sad sight. He came down very heavily underneath that high kick
00:19:08just two or three minutes ago and a very disappointed man. A disappointment for him
00:19:12and the New Zealand team and the big Canterbury crowd. One of the two Cantabrians in the team
00:19:17today. So at number 16 Bernie McCarhill will come on. So New Zealand doing pretty well in the early
00:19:30lineouts. They're hit by six to two and cleanly one lineout ball in the first quarter of the match.
00:19:37Jones gets to run for the first time really opening out.
00:19:44Referee Bennett says play on. Shelford. That's halfway. Kirk. The man was offside. The referee
00:19:54has had a scene. The Scotsman. I think it was Turnbull but he's allowed advantage to be played
00:19:59I think because the kick was so good. Yes he did. It was a good game. Good referee.
00:20:09So coming on for his second international is Auckland's Bernie McCarhill.
00:20:15He's 22 years of age from the Marist Club. Replaces Warwick Taylor.
00:20:29No score in this very tight test match.
00:20:37Finlay called it. Manly to New Zealand and this one is in a much more advantageous position you see.
00:20:44Third kicker goal coming up for Grant Fox. Much more comfortable angle.
00:21:02You can see how flat and smooth this turf at Lancaster Park is. It really is just like a bowling green.
00:21:21Fox now will just need the little dink shot this time with his kick.
00:22:02So it's cross on the Scottish side. Just a moment of contemplation there from their manager Bob Munro.
00:22:17And Hastings to restart.
00:22:32Big one from Gavin Hastings just landed inside the end goal area. Back he goes. Very big boot
00:22:42and that's an indication just how far he could kick the ball in a penalty goal attempt situation.
00:22:49But Earl Curtin it's been a very tight test match. We haven't seen any back play of any
00:22:52consequence at all. No we've seen the New Zealanders try to spin it but they've been
00:22:56really knocked over and they have done it.
00:23:12Kirk back to Fox.
00:23:18So that's pushed Grant Fox up to 76 points in test matches. Now this is just his fifth
00:23:22international. He's well on target to land a hundred in a very short time indeed. We just
00:23:28heard that Warwick Taylor is off with a badly bruised shin. And David Soule threw into Findlay
00:23:36called a number seven to Ian Paxton. Scotland in good position here. Soule again number one.
00:23:41Roy Lator loves to run the narrow side.
00:23:44The lineups are very untidy up until now and even though New Zealand's been winning most of them
00:23:49very very scrappy and it's making it hard ball for Kirk.
00:23:51And we tend to be too loose towards the back too which is unusual for New Zealand side.
00:23:59It's Patrick trying to wetten.
00:24:05Fox. McCarhill touches for the first time. That's his
00:24:09wiper's kick which has gone to land. Hastings who likes to bring the ball forward.
00:24:17John Gallagher the opposite fullback. Little left foot one up. Keith Robertson number 12. Got his kick away.
00:24:29Okay Bernie McCarthy does look like Warwick Taylor from a distance.
00:24:33Just a fraction taller and that's his kick back to the back.
00:24:36Watch what we call the nudging in this line out. Very interesting stage of the game in lineouts.
00:24:39One by Murray Pearce that time. Low and nicely picked up by Fox on the half volleyball.
00:24:47Watch what we call the nudging in this line-out, very interesting stage of the game in line-outs.
00:24:59Won by Murray Pearce that time, low and nicely picked up by Fox on the half-volley, here's
00:25:04Craig Green through on Hastings, beautifully taken down by Kirk, carried on by McDowell,
00:25:11that's the 22, laid back for Kirk, oh Fox knocked it on, his drop-kick attempt, they're
00:25:20going to play to the whistle, but the referee's gone back and awarded a penalty kick to the
00:25:24All Blacks, it must have been for the offside of the Scottish backs, and Fox will have an
00:25:31easy attempted goal, we may have to check and look at that one again, but the ball was
00:25:40coming back to Kirk after Fox, and it was nudged forward, but the referee was looking
00:25:44elsewhere, here it is again, let's see if we can see those Scottish backs, yes you see
00:25:59Wylie was right up ahead of the referee, and the referee had seen that, and the others
00:26:03too, so again we have to say good refereeing Earl Kirk, he's made an excellent fist of
00:26:13it, and it's been very difficult because it's been scrappy too in these first 20 minutes,
00:26:20so the injured player again is Colin Deans, one of the great rugby personalities of the
00:26:29Quake club, and he took a bump earlier on, and he won't want to leave the field, the
00:26:37man, that's the Scottish doctor checking him, and Deans OK, but that's interesting, there's
00:26:44obviously a check of whether he was feeling 100%, yes with the other, our hooker Fitzpatrick
00:26:52is not too well out, he seems to have a bit of blood splattered around as well, so it's
00:26:56tit for tat, there is Fitzpatrick number 2, you can't see it, but there's blood on
00:27:03his face, 24 minutes gone, so Fox's kick is over, and New Zealand now lead by 2, Fox
00:27:281-0. So there he is, from the borders of Scotland down by the English borders, from
00:27:49the Quake club where they really play rugby hard and tough, and it'll take a lot of knocks
00:27:55and beating around for, before Colin Deans leaves the field. As I say, no other hooker
00:28:02in the history of the game has played more international distance than this man, and
00:28:05he is one of the great men of Quake rugby, along with people like Jim Rennick who's been
00:28:09out here, he was the Scottish Caps record holder until Deans equalled it today. Laidlaw
00:28:19off the big bear, Ian Milne, he got tipped backwards, Laidlaw out to Wylie, Wylie nudges
00:28:25through, and that's a good kick by Doug Wylie, that's the Scottish management, Ian McEachin
00:28:32to the left and Derek Grant, the coaches of the Scottish team, and they'll be delighted,
00:28:36this is their best position so far. This is the first time they've been in a really attacking
00:28:40position. That's Patrick, number 4 is Peters, walk in again for David Kirk, getting a tough
00:28:55time from his line-out men. Sad sight, Warwick Taylor, getting dejected in the stand. I could
00:29:11hear Kirk yell then, it wasn't good enough, the skips, and it wasn't either, got to be
00:29:16a tidier ball than that from line-outs, otherwise New Zealand are going to be in this sort of
00:29:20trouble. Well that was a bit of a mess, and it'll be a new restart, and the applause I
00:29:39think is for New Zealand footy. Yes, I think it's relief. So Fox to the left, position
00:29:47cuts for the clearance, oh no, a penalty against the New Zealand front row for pulling at the
00:29:53position of the scrum, not letting it go down and settle properly, and here is a chance for
00:29:59Gavin Hastings now to come in to the ballgame. Well it's all stemming from line-outs, it really
00:30:07has to be a lot tighter, and that is New Zealand will have to be a lot tighter, particularly in
00:30:12the front ball, so as they control it more. Kirk was very unhappy with the two or three of those
00:30:16balls that had been played back to him. So there he is, the New Zealand captain, David Kirk, doesn't
00:30:28look too pleased at the moment. Here's Gavin Hastings, his goal-kicking style is quite simple,
00:30:42three steps back, two to the left, then one backwards before he comes in.
00:30:59Well, it was in off, but it's in, and over, and Scotland are on the board, New Zealand 6, Scotland 3, it's all penalties.
00:31:19Remember this is knockout rugby, miss and you're out, lose and these All Blacks are headed home.
00:31:28Win and they're on to the semi-finals in Brisbane next weekend.
00:31:35And it's a very close Rugby International so far, Scottish forwards have done rather well in the last few minutes.
00:31:44Fox kicks out after nearly half an hour of play, taken in by Derek Turnbull, the new cap also from the Hoyt Club.
00:31:59There is Turnbull, a logical progression for him up into the Scottish Internationals, he's been Scottish B and Scotland on tour.
00:32:10Derek Turnbull now making his international debut. Royal Adelaide, back to Gavin Hastings.
00:32:18That was a good New Zealand scrum again, there's plenty of pressure on.
00:32:37David Kirkwood will be hoping for cleaner ball from these line-outs, that one's gone on the Scottish side, Royal Adelaide.
00:32:48Referee back at the line-out.
00:32:53They crossed the line of touch before, or during the throw-blows, he went back to actually jumping for the ball, so that is a penalty for New Zealand, and another chance for Fox to make it out to the six-point gap again.
00:33:04I actually think the Scottish have gone in with a plan that they're not really going to jump for the ball most of the time.
00:33:10They seem to be dead-set on racing through the line-out and disrupting the New Zealand ball behind the line-out, which isn't a bad move.
00:33:17They've obviously thought that that's one way of upsetting New Zealand, but at the same time, some of them are obviously getting offside, Keith, and then they're being pinged for it by Burnett.
00:33:25Well, of course, Scotland had problems with their line-up and the Five Nations in the line-out, because they, in one stage, played five No. 8 forwards in the line-out, because they lacked a really big man.
00:33:36Toomes wasn't playing in that series.
00:33:38So, Grant Fox now trying to make it 9-3 to New Zealand.
00:33:44Hastings began away to that far side where most of the game has been played, and he's found the line almost back up where the penalty was taken.
00:34:12So, let's look at this line-out again and see about Earl Curtin's theory. The New Zealand backs are lined up as though they want to run.
00:34:18Yes, they're very deep. You can't quite see them. Here we are now. Look how deep they are. I think that's far too deep from a line-out.
00:34:24Conceding too much ground, too far away from the advantage line.
00:34:27Oh, Finlay called it through. Knocked it forward. McCarhill. Advantage may apply. Bernie McCarhill. Craig Green. Alan Whetton. That's the corner flag.
00:34:45A great run there by Bernie McCarhill. Advantage applied, and he was looking just like McGinty as he raced through there.
00:34:58That's the famous racehorse his father owned, and what a run by McCarhill. Nearly set up New Zealand's first try.
00:35:04Corner flag is in the background. Laidlaw back to Hastings. And he's just eased it out to about 10 metres short of the goal line.
00:35:24Where will New Zealand throw this ball? I don't reckon they'll risk the end of the line-out. I think they'll throw it short and try and drive over.
00:35:35So Fitzpatrick has many variations on his throws.
00:35:43They threw it for Alan Whetton, but it was snaffled by Ian Paxton. That's him number 8.
00:35:51Watching for the referee's signal, but there wasn't one. A line-out infringement in there.
00:36:04So he is a difficult customer, Ian Paxton. That's him there towards the back. In front of him, number 5, is Alan Toombs. In front of him is Derek White.
00:36:17Sorry, Turnbull's in front of Toombs. They're mixing the line-out up. They're playing the big bear towards the back.
00:36:23And I guess that's sensible tactics. A little curtain to mix it around.
00:36:29He says it gets hard to find out who you're actually marking.
00:36:33But Paxton's going well at the end of the line-out. He's going to be a thorn in New Zealand's side.
00:36:37Because every time we get deep down into their territory, you need that ball from the end of the line-out to score tries, basically.
00:36:46Wade Law.
00:36:49Sean Scrum has done well. He wheeled it away. Well, nearly did.
00:36:54But Watson, who's kicked the ball a lot in defensive situations, has pushed it outside the 22 this time.
00:37:15Well, you can see again how deep the New Zealand back line is. They're coming back almost 45, 50 yards.
00:37:24Michael Jones up to the 22. Let's see where it is. It's there for Kirk. Now, are they running?
00:37:29Makaho left out. Joe Stanley running back into the minefield, inside the 22.
00:37:34Laid up again for Kirk on the narrow side. Shelford.
00:37:39Scottish players win in over the top, including one after the referee awarded the penalty.
00:37:48This is what they're tending to do. They're diving into what we call the one-yard area.
00:37:52But by Joe's, it was a marvellous tackle by Calder on Buck Shelford when he moved round on that blindside.
00:37:59They've got big hearts, these Scots. They bowl anything that moves.
00:38:03There is Finlay Calder. We talked about brothers in rugby the other day.
00:38:08Here's another man whose twin brother played 27 internationals for Scotland on the open side flank.
00:38:14And Finlay Calder was playing on the same club team on the blind side.
00:38:17Finally, the selectors rang him and said, we want you on the open side.
00:38:20So Finlay Calder came in, replaced his twin brother on the Scottish team.
00:38:25That's been bothering Sean Fitzpatrick these last few minutes.
00:38:32Courts go up to the grandstand there because we have a reserve hooker sitting in the grandstand for New Zealand.
00:39:02So near halftime, here is Grant Fox.
00:39:33Well, the points keep coming from Grant Fox.
00:39:46So Dalton in the stand looking at the condition of the man on the field, I guess.
00:39:51Sean Fitzpatrick, they've been looking at that cut. Doesn't look too bad.
00:39:55It's underneath the eye, you see.
00:40:02I'll bet you he's just itching to get back onto the field.
00:40:1538 minutes of play. New Zealand leading by six points again.
00:40:19In a match where there's only been penalty goals so far.
00:40:22Kirk.
00:40:25Now John Kirwan, he's been a bit unemployed out on the right wing.
00:40:29He's been a bit unemployed out on the right wing and so has his opposite number.
00:40:34Ivan Tukalo, Matt Duncan on the other side. The wing has hardly been in the ball game.
00:40:42Derek White, Andy and Paxton.
00:40:45Jones running for the middle.
00:40:48Finlay Calder, there it is for Laidlaw.
00:40:50Back to Wiley.
00:40:51Wiley with the drop kick.
00:40:54Not a bad little snap by Doug Wiley but it's just wide.
00:40:59He's well balanced and he timed it and just pushed the wee bit to the right.
00:41:15So this is kicked down to Ivan Tukalo and he gets to handle the ball for the first time in the international.
00:41:19Here he is, Ivan Tukalo.
00:41:21Getting up speed, coming to halfway.
00:41:23Got away from Michael Jones.
00:41:25Knocked down this time by Gary Whetton.
00:41:27The big bear picks it up, Ian Milne.
00:41:30Scotland driving through.
00:41:33Laidlaw, swing it right.
00:41:35Wiley, Robertson.
00:41:37Knocked down by McCarhill.
00:41:44Well the Scots certainly had five on three there.
00:41:48But again McCarhill got him very quickly to knock that ball down.
00:41:52And Robertson delayed slightly as he tried to swing his hips to get it away.
00:41:56And it was a fatal in effect.
00:42:07Well there was a line-up where New Zealand didn't jump Earl Curtin.
00:42:11Exactly.
00:42:18Right on half time the line-up throw is going to be taken again with the Scottish throw.
00:42:28Picked up by Michael Jones.
00:42:29Oh lovely hand-off of Wiley.
00:42:31That's the goal line ahead.
00:42:32Kirk, away to Fox.
00:42:34To McCarhill, to Stanley.
00:42:36Gallagher left out Kerwin.
00:42:41Referee has brought them back.
00:42:43That's no try.
00:42:48That's no try.
00:42:49Referee has awarded a penalty to Scotland.
00:42:51John Kerwin was in in the corner.
00:42:54Well it was actually because they pushed the ball behind John Gallagher
00:42:57who came in inside Kerwin.
00:42:59And therefore according to Mr Burnett
00:43:02that's shepherding or crossing behind the player.
00:43:05They've been quite consistent in that in the tournament.
00:43:08Fair call I think.
00:43:11Let's look at it again.
00:43:13It came out and Gallagher was coming in as extra man.
00:43:16He's left out and yes he obstructed number 13 tight in defence.
00:43:20Kerwin went in to score the try
00:43:22but it was not awarded.
00:43:23Half time.
00:43:24New Zealand in the lead at Lancaster Park.
00:43:30Referee Burnett of Ireland
00:43:32who stopped the try for New Zealand just a minute before half time
00:43:36when he ruled that John Gallagher was up and shepherding.
00:43:40Begins the second half.
00:43:42Three Fox penalty goals to one for Gavin Hastings for Scotland.
00:43:47You can forget about the win.
00:43:48There is no win in Christchurch today.
00:43:49So no one gets the advantage in the second half.
00:44:00Laidlaw on the blind side to Wylie.
00:44:03That's for Gallagher coming forward.
00:44:05Oh no they won't let it bounce.
00:44:06That's the halfway line.
00:44:08Oh it's bounced an awfully long way back.
00:44:10It bounced 15 metres back to Jones.
00:44:14To Kerwin.
00:44:22Well Earl Curtin that ball bounced about 15 to 20 metres back on New Zealand's side.
00:44:26It's absolutely hard underneath that half inch of moving sort of soil.
00:44:32It is really rock hard underneath there.
00:44:34I walked on it earlier on and that's why it bounced so high.
00:44:40A lucky break gives New Zealand a chance to be on attack again.
00:44:44Paxton away to Finlay Calder.
00:44:46But that's intercepted by Wayne Shelford.
00:44:52New Zealand is screwing the scrum.
00:44:53Notice how they're trying to turn it round to the left.
00:44:56The Scottish scrum moves round to the left on an axis.
00:45:02David Kirk New Zealand's captain.
00:45:04Ahead 9-3 in front of us.
00:45:06Makaha.
00:45:08Joe Stanley trying to kick it through.
00:45:10Paxton is there.
00:45:11He had a very good first half Paxton.
00:45:14Laidlaw.
00:45:15Wylie.
00:45:19He doesn't look very natural on the left foot.
00:45:23Oh it nearly went up to Ivan Tukalo.
00:45:32This is Ivan Tukalo a quick throw in though.
00:45:35Shelford.
00:45:37He's done that a few times today.
00:45:38Making that initial burst.
00:45:40Why the fox?
00:45:41Now the big truss kick.
00:45:44Hastings in good position.
00:45:47The man with him is Matt Duncan who's hardly had anything to do.
00:45:50The two fullbacks collide near halfway.
00:45:55Well this is getting exciting now.
00:45:57Scotland are obviously trying to run it out.
00:45:58They realise they have to.
00:46:00Back to a two man line up.
00:46:02This is Matt Duncan the winger who's had very little to do in the match
00:46:05in the first 40 minutes.
00:46:09Shortened line up called by Colin Deans for Scotland.
00:46:15Alan Weckham and Paxton.
00:46:16That's one that Weckham got.
00:46:17Look at Paxton go through to disrupt.
00:46:29Just think about the strain that these men are under.
00:46:31Representing the rugby honour of their countries.
00:46:33And the penalty has been awarded.
00:46:34John Drake doesn't believe it.
00:46:38I think he changed his tune there.
00:46:40I think he was going to give it to New Zealand by the look of Dave Burnett.
00:46:43He went round and then gave it to Scotland.
00:46:45He obviously didn't like what one of the New Zealanders did there on the floor.
00:46:49But these players are under enormous pressure.
00:46:51Playing for the rugby pride of their two nations.
00:46:53Two teams with long and traditional rivalries against each other.
00:46:57And when the pressure is on.
00:46:59Quarter finals and the first ever rugby world cup.
00:47:03It could be that tempers jump a little quickly.
00:47:08This is Ian Paxton.
00:47:09Who today incidentally is setting a new Scottish record for number 8 in internationals.
00:47:16And he has played an outstanding first half.
00:47:19Yes I think he's been the key to the Scottish pack.
00:47:21He's getting to the loose ball.
00:47:23And he's also denying New Zealand what we call good fastball off the back of the line up.
00:47:27Because he's really competing with Alan Weckham.
00:47:29And I should say basically beating him.
00:47:33He's got a beautiful name.
00:47:34Ian Angus McLeod Paxton.
00:47:37Played here in the 1983 tour with the Lions.
00:47:41Played all four tests.
00:47:42Played here in 81 with the Scottish team.
00:47:44I think he's a far better player now than he was when he was here with the Lions.
00:47:52But back to the business at hand.
00:47:54New Zealand lead by 9 to 3.
00:47:57But Gavin Hastings has landed one goal from one attempt.
00:48:03This is a big kick for Hastings.
00:48:04Because it's his first 10 minutes that we all talk about.
00:48:07The psychological 10 minutes after half time.
00:48:10Where if you're down you must score.
00:48:16He's got a reputation for kicking a big goal too.
00:48:18He's scored 18 points on his test debut.
00:48:20He had a shocking beginning in that game.
00:48:22He came out, kicked off and kicked it out on the pull.
00:48:24But then he's kicked those six penalties.
00:48:27Won the game for Scotland 18 to 17.
00:48:30Two steps across to the left.
00:48:31And then he steps one backwards before coming in.
00:48:44Well he tried a bit hard in that one.
00:48:46And New Zealand still holding that six point advantage.
00:48:57Fox taking the long one.
00:49:01Taken down there by Albon Tukalo right halfway.
00:49:07Trying to give it to Tait.
00:49:08Joe Stanley into Alan Witten.
00:49:10Not many New Zealanders in the picture.
00:49:12But carried on by Stanley.
00:49:15Driving like Shelford.
00:49:17And here's Alan Witten again.
00:49:20It's the Shelford and Stanley show at the moment.
00:49:22Now Kirk.
00:49:23Kirwin.
00:49:26Jones.
00:49:29Pearce.
00:49:30Ah, but it'll be a knock on.
00:49:31It's OK when it's bobbling about in your hands.
00:49:33But as soon as it bounces to someone else's, that's the knock on.
00:49:38Oh yes, they're really driving in there.
00:49:40And that was marvellous driving by Jones and Witten.
00:49:42And that's the New Zealand back row getting into action.
00:49:45Ploughing through them is the word.
00:49:51Swung by New Zealand.
00:49:53I think it's New Zealand who was snappled at Kirk, I think.
00:49:57Let's see who gets up under that.
00:49:59Because I think that was taken by New Zealand's captain under there.
00:50:04No, credit where it's due.
00:50:06Big Buck Shelford has taken it in.
00:50:08And won New Zealand the loose end.
00:50:16Right.
00:50:18Control.
00:50:19Bond.
00:50:20Shelford.
00:50:21All lost forward by John Gallagher.
00:50:27John Kirwin.
00:50:29Expecting the short pass.
00:50:30But it's not going well out there in centres, is it, Kirk?
00:50:33Well, look, it's a credit to the Scots.
00:50:35The Scots are really packing the blind side.
00:50:37They've obviously heard and done their homework.
00:50:39And they're trying to stop New Zealand on that blind.
00:50:41And they're hanging off Rex.
00:50:42They're prepared to go down to the ground.
00:50:44So as it leaves or releases players,
00:50:46to sit on the blind to stop Kirwin and Gallagher using that right hand side.
00:51:00The scrum is down.
00:51:02And New Zealand are penalised in the front row.
00:51:11Well, the referee has to make a decision.
00:51:12If he believes the two props, and there they are, McDowell and Drake.
00:51:15If he believes they've taken it down, then he must penalise them.
00:51:18It's very definitely a penalisable offence.
00:51:23The only point is, it's rather unusual for a side to take the scrum down there on the tap.
00:51:28There's no point in it, basically.
00:51:29It's always a debate, isn't it, when you have the put-in yourself.
00:51:33And that one was a Scottish put-in, but New Zealand were attacking.
00:51:36Here's Sean Fitzpatrick.
00:51:43Pearce.
00:51:44Ellen Whitney round the front.
00:51:49Well, that was great yelling.
00:51:50You could hear that Scottish accent saying,
00:51:52The referee heard it.
00:52:22Let's see if it goes there.
00:52:27It's gone and skipped to the halfway position in the line,
00:52:30and Fox makes the fence.
00:52:32I think New Zealand might be reluctant to throw it too many times
00:52:34down to Ellen Whitney if Paxton's in this kind of form.
00:52:37Well, when you're on the fence, it just makes it slightly more risky, that's all,
00:52:43when you're in your own half.
00:52:47There's the big one, pitched in the midfield.
00:52:48Taken live nicely by Finlay Calder.
00:52:52Now Scotland into this set-up, but it's gone to Kirk, to Fox.
00:52:58Gallagher chasing hard, and there's the New Zealand full-back,
00:53:02sending in a 45-meter kick.
00:53:05John Gallagher from Wellington.
00:53:14Nine minutes of playing time in the second half.
00:53:17New Zealand leading by nine to three,
00:53:19but they will be feeling extremely anxious,
00:53:22because we're, as I don't think you need reminding,
00:53:25in knockout phase now in Rugby's World Cup.
00:53:31John Kirwan.
00:53:35Hastings, you'll have to play it out from there.
00:53:41There is absolutely no risk rugby being played here,
00:53:44if in doubt, kick it out.
00:53:46Yes, exactly.
00:53:48But still there's some marvellous battles going on,
00:53:51little mini-battles, one might call them,
00:53:53the line-out in particular.
00:54:00Ten minutes of play, second half.
00:54:03That's a good one, secured by Wayne Shelford.
00:54:09New Zealand taking it through, there's a little struggle there,
00:54:11Paxton was involved, but it's cleared now to Stanley.
00:54:16Gallagher up.
00:54:17Michael Jones off Gallagher.
00:54:19Craig Green, 22 metres line.
00:54:22The big Canterbury back giving the shot for Green.
00:54:35Well, underneath all this, Craig Green will get up,
00:54:38and that was a strong burst by him.
00:54:42Yes, you notice he was trying to stay on his feet,
00:54:44and that's vital with the modern rule.
00:54:49Kirk.
00:54:50Ten metres out.
00:54:51Jones, there's the goal line looming ahead for the All Blacks.
00:54:56Drake.
00:54:58He'll get there.
00:54:59No, he's just shot.
00:55:02Kirk again.
00:55:04But this time, it's a try for New Zealand,
00:55:07and it's Alan Whetton again, I think.
00:55:15That's a try in every Rugby World Cup match
00:55:18for No. 6, Alan Whetton.
00:55:20You can see him there in support of this charge.
00:55:22And then it was John Drake, No. 3, who went very close.
00:55:26He barrels his way up towards the goal line,
00:55:28gets caught by one boot and thrown down.
00:55:31And then, Kirk, a wobbly one out to Alan Whetton,
00:55:34and he powered through.
00:55:39Well, this was good rucking.
00:55:41Well, this was good rucking.
00:55:43I thought New Zealand almost lost it here,
00:55:45where they went in and tried to pick it up with their hands
00:55:47and still blowing it away.
00:55:48But you watch this man.
00:55:49Look how low he gets there.
00:55:51Beautiful body position to dive in for a try.
00:55:56John Drake carried it on.
00:55:57You see how he gets caught by just one leg.
00:55:59By sole is opposite number.
00:56:02And down it goes.
00:56:03Kirk was interfered with by Matt Duncan.
00:56:07The pass was on the ground,
00:56:09and then Whetton crashed through.
00:56:15So there is an injury.
00:56:16This is Ian Baxton.
00:56:26Baxton having more attention to cut on the top of his head.
00:56:39So that's a fantastic record.
00:56:41Four tries in four consecutive internationals
00:56:43for number six, Alan Whetton.
00:56:45This is a young man who was dropped from the All Blacks
00:56:48just nine months ago.
00:56:50He couldn't get in the New Zealand team to tour France.
00:56:53There were many Aucklanders who said that was wrong,
00:56:55and Alan Whetton has proved them to be correct in 1987.
00:57:02Some anxiety for the Scots.
00:57:04They've conceded a try.
00:57:05Their outstanding number eight has taken a blow on the head.
00:57:10It's really a tribute to the Scottish tackling, too,
00:57:13that they've contained Jones.
00:57:15He's making ground all the time,
00:57:17but by Jones, in the end, they do bring him down.
00:57:40WHISTLE BLOWS
00:57:43WHISTLE BLOWS
00:57:44CHEERING
00:57:50The extra points now give New Zealand a 12-point advantage
00:57:53over Scotland.
00:57:5912 minutes gone, second half, and we may now see this man,
00:58:02Michael Jones, come into the game more
00:58:04in those surging driving runs.
00:58:10So New Zealand scored the first try in the match,
00:58:13converted by Fox.
00:58:15Again, Hastings kicks deep,
00:58:17and here is Grant Fox with 11 points in the match so far.
00:58:23Some anxious faces, Ian McEachin and Derek Grant.
00:58:29Kick to Gavin Hastings.
00:58:32Brings it forward. He can do this very well.
00:58:34Big kick, but it's gone too far.
00:58:37John Gallagher.
00:58:39That's bread-and-butter stuff from a full-back.
00:58:42That's the one I call room service earlier.
00:58:44You don't have to go far to get it.
00:58:52So Scotland are desperate now.
00:58:5412 points behind.
00:58:55The time took away the long ball in the midfield.
00:58:58That's Derek Turnbull,
00:58:59but he took it from a knock on by another player.
00:59:04That is Turnbull.
00:59:05His first test today, 25 years of age.
00:59:10See Ellen Tate, number 13.
00:59:12He's hardly had the ball at all in set play.
00:59:15Kirk.
00:59:18Gallagher again with the push off the touchline.
00:59:23Yes, that was classic blindside play.
00:59:25Plenty of room on the right.
00:59:26That is the blindside,
00:59:28and easy for the half-back to run that way.
00:59:3414 minutes gone, second half.
00:59:36New Zealand 12 points ahead
00:59:39and playing with a lot more coolness and confidence.
00:59:42Pressure on Hastings.
00:59:50Well, he's really so different to Andy Irvine,
00:59:52the last Scottish full-back that came to New Zealand.
00:59:55Irvine was a will-o'-the-wisp type of player,
00:59:57an outstanding full-back, of course,
00:59:59but this man is a big, solid full-back, isn't he?
01:00:02Gavin Hastings.
01:00:11New Zealand playing with a 12-point cushion.
01:00:15Turnbull has done rather well in his debut.
01:00:17Laidlaw, Wylie, Keith Robertson,
01:00:20Tate left out, Hastings up and through.
01:00:27Kerwin coming over.
01:00:28Up.
01:00:31And good play by Kerwin.
01:00:35Covered nicely into the corner.
01:00:37Made no mistakes,
01:00:39no nonsense, just ran it over the touchline
01:00:41and backed his team to get out of this tight situation.
01:00:47This becomes a crucial line-out, Earl Curtin.
01:00:49Scotland ball in.
01:00:51Well, yes, he's got to throw up for Paxton, I'd say.
01:00:53That's where he's winning most of his balls.
01:00:55Long ball towards the back of the line-out.
01:01:01Paxton has secured it.
01:01:02Finlay called a number seven.
01:01:03It's there for Laidlaw.
01:01:04He's good on the blind side.
01:01:06He's gone instead to the open side.
01:01:08Robertson.
01:01:11Turnbull.
01:01:18So they've worked themselves into a more central position this time,
01:01:21the Scots, for again, the Scottish foot.
01:01:23And they can go left and right.
01:01:24You see the posts are handy.
01:01:29Just have got to go for a big scrub.
01:01:35Called up.
01:01:36Laidlaw.
01:01:38Hastings.
01:01:39Duncan.
01:01:41Shelford away.
01:01:43Oh, a gymnastic throw by Buck Shelford.
01:01:53Robertson.
01:02:00Well, Kirk was very unhappy there because the Scottish forwards were hanging on to him.
01:02:04And he quite rightly, quite rightly had a pull away to stop them hanging on to his arms.
01:02:12He was trying to get the ball away.
01:02:18Alan Weckham is the man down.
01:02:21High injury.
01:02:24Over again.
01:02:26But let's look at that again.
01:02:27Look at number eight in the centre of your picture.
01:02:29He does a forward roll over Duncan's tackle.
01:02:31Something very gymnastic.
01:02:33Over go the legs.
01:02:36Meantime, back in the foreground,
01:02:37Alan Weckham had been in a collision with Matt Duncan.
01:02:43He's got a minute.
01:02:49He's involved.
01:02:54Come on Adrian, it's a scrum.
01:02:57It's a scrum.
01:03:04So this is going to be a big scrum.
01:03:06And listen to that crowd here at Lancaster Park.
01:03:08All blacks they're chanting.
01:03:19Shelford in control.
01:03:20This is what he's good at.
01:03:22Hard driving from the base of the scrum.
01:03:27Offside play.
01:03:29Yes, you notice there are only three spotted forwards really down on that.
01:03:32And the other four were all fringing.
01:03:44New Zealand leading by 15 points to three.
01:03:47They have scored the only try in the match.
01:03:53Right at the top there you see the television sets watching this coverage.
01:03:57The press men of the world here in big numbers today
01:04:00watching this Rugby World Cup.
01:04:02The first of the big quarter finals.
01:04:05Shelford again.
01:04:08Fitzpatrick.
01:04:11He pushed off Colin Deans like he wasn't there.
01:04:14Kirk, Fox, McCahill, Stanley.
01:04:19Wiley and Robertson were the tacklers.
01:04:22Well, the bank and I saw a hand in there.
01:04:24And I think the referee might have seen something else.
01:04:27But there was a hand in there.
01:04:29But it's a midfield penalty chance for New Zealand.
01:04:32I saw David Kirk helping him here with a guest juror as well to say look at that ref.
01:04:39Stanley should have moved that ball for all intents and purposes.
01:04:43It was the chance of a classic move.
01:04:46Gallagher was up outside.
01:04:47And there was a two on one situation out there.
01:04:50And he chopped back inside.
01:04:58How many were outside? I didn't quite see that.
01:05:00Was there two?
01:05:01He had Gallagher and he also had Kerwin.
01:05:03And that normally is good night nurse.
01:05:05It's good night nurse.
01:05:07So this could just about be the nail in the coffin for Scotland's chances.
01:05:13If this kick from Fox goes in.
01:05:36Well Fox keeps putting them over.
01:05:5014 points for the Aucklander.
01:05:5218 points to three New Zealand lead.
01:05:59So now let's see how Scotland will react from that setback.
01:06:04Colin Deans.
01:06:05A man such a desperately keen rugby man who really loves the scent of victory.
01:06:10Well it's a quick kick off by Scotland.
01:06:12They've tried them in just about every game for the last year or so.
01:06:19And the indication there that Scotland trying anything for victory.
01:06:22Craig Green kicking ahead.
01:06:24Gallagher chasing through.
01:06:25Paxton going back.
01:06:28That's too close. Loose ball.
01:06:32Gary Whetton.
01:06:33He lost it fourth.
01:06:42Yes he just lost it.
01:06:45It was hard luck.
01:06:46I think he's a wee bit sore too.
01:06:47And that wouldn't help him coordinate those muscles and arms and legs and head to actually pick it up in time.
01:06:59Alan Whetton on the flank.
01:07:01Marking him on the other side is number seven Finlay Calder.
01:07:06But New Zealand all of a sudden are looking good.
01:07:09And scrumming well.
01:07:12Which is something I thought before the game Scotland would have an advantage.
01:07:16And it's great to see.
01:07:19Dowell on the near side.
01:07:20Drake on the far side in the second half.
01:07:23Ian Milne number three for Scotland.
01:07:25David Sowell on the far side.
01:07:27He's gone down.
01:07:29And it's a penalty to New Zealand.
01:07:31Referee Burnett has said Scotland took it down and you can see how close the posts are.
01:07:45Well there are the two props number one and number three.
01:07:49And they'll be disappointed in Colin Deans as well.
01:07:53Just almost consoling his players.
01:07:56As they go back.
01:07:59Yes well they got away with the penalty sort of ten minutes before and I suppose it's worth another go.
01:08:06But Dave Burnett must have thought about that too.
01:08:08I can't see any point on the tacking side taking scrum down.
01:08:26It's a penalty for Scotland.
01:08:56No mistake by Grant Fox.
01:08:59The points keep coming off the Aucklanders.
01:09:01But New Zealand 21 Scotland 3.
01:09:06He began the day with 73 points in international.
01:09:08He's up to 90.
01:09:09He could nudge 100 points today.
01:09:12Well Scotland will have to be awfully brave now.
01:09:14The anthem will have to come to the fore.
01:09:16Because I think that New Zealand is starting to get on top in the loose two.
01:09:20And now that the scrum is superior.
01:09:22That is the New Zealand scrum.
01:09:23I can't see Scotland getting too much ball.
01:09:25Unless it's fluky airy fairy stuff.
01:09:30The short one this time.
01:09:31Another good kick off and my word Paxton was nearly through and away.
01:09:36But it's there for Kirk.
01:09:37New Zealand are getting a stream of possession.
01:09:39Now to send the Scots back.
01:09:41Hastings.
01:09:44Caught by Jones.
01:09:46He didn't immediately release.
01:09:50But the indications were there that he was going to try to run.
01:09:53So Scotland are absolutely desperate now.
01:09:57And it's going to be another shot at goal from Grant Fox.
01:10:09Well momentarily there were some in the crowd who disagreed with Fox's decision.
01:10:13Or the decision to kick for goal.
01:10:15Might I say more than some kick.
01:10:17It's quite a rabble.
01:10:19Just look at that.
01:10:20Hastings was attempting to run when Jones caught him.
01:10:22He took it down.
01:10:23The ball was down.
01:10:24He never attempted to release.
01:10:25Well he did.
01:10:26But not quickly enough for referee Burnett.
01:10:31The words in the law say immediately.
01:10:33Well the word is immediate.
01:10:34And it wasn't immediate.
01:10:49Just close from Fox.
01:10:50No change to the score.
01:10:5121-3.
01:11:19So Scotland now trying to regain some composure.
01:11:23They'll be shocked and shattered by what's happened to them in the second half.
01:11:3015 minutes left for their World Cup chances.
01:11:33Taken in by Alan Whetton.
01:11:41Driven on by the All Blacks.
01:11:43Kirk.
01:11:44Narrow side.
01:11:45Gallagher in.
01:11:47Nudged ahead by Kirk.
01:11:53Yes, Gallagher just couldn't quite free that.
01:11:55You can notice on the right.
01:11:59Took a low shot.
01:12:00Kerwin out.
01:12:01Good play by the Scotland.
01:12:06Kerwin was ahead of the ball I think when that was kicked.
01:12:08I'm sorry.
01:12:13Some injury.
01:12:17Chance to consider what we're seeing this afternoon.
01:12:19Now Kirk from New Zealand.
01:12:20Only one try.
01:12:21But an emphatic performance now by the All Blacks.
01:12:24Exactly.
01:12:25They're playing with a lot more vim and a lot tighter.
01:12:28But then that might be also because the Scots are suddenly feeling psychologically that they've let this game slip.
01:12:35It was 9-3 at half time.
01:12:37It's now 21-3 to New Zealand.
01:12:42Although it'd be fair to say that I don't think the Scots have really threatened in the second half.
01:12:47The line-outs favour New Zealand by 20-11.
01:12:56Beautifully taken by Shelford.
01:13:04Another penalty for the All Blacks.
01:13:06The actual penalty count may look a lot for New Zealand because they have a lot of shots at goal.
01:13:13Here's the Canterbury crowd giving the raspberry to the New Zealand kicker Grant Fox.
01:13:19But in fact the penalty count is 12 to New Zealand and 10 to Scotland.
01:13:24So it's fairly close.
01:13:25Well, other than the fact that New Zealand have had most of them down close to the goals.
01:13:29But that's been the story of the game anyhow.
01:13:31They've curatorially dominated the game.
01:13:35You know, he's scored 20 points in each of the Rugby World Cup matches so far, Grant Fox.
01:13:40He began with 22, then 26, then 22.
01:13:42He's got 17 so far.
01:13:46Incredible.
01:13:47Some of those unkind pundits, I think, who've considered some of the games haven't really been tests,
01:13:53will have to say that this certainly has.
01:13:55When he gets up to 20 in this, I hope they give him due credit.
01:13:58When he gets up to 20 in this, I hope they give him due credit.
01:14:22And that is 20 points in four consecutive Rugby World Cup matches for Grant Fox.
01:14:27And it's 24 to 3.
01:14:37One other feature of the game has been the fact that Dave Burnett has been very tough on Scotland today on going over the ball.
01:14:5128 minutes gone, second half.
01:14:57Ball in, ball in, ball in.
01:14:59Ball in, ball in.
01:15:07So, David Sowell to the left.
01:15:09Just a two-man line-up pitched into the centre.
01:15:11Finlay Calder.
01:15:13Number 7 makes number 7.
01:15:15New Zealand get the ball. Fox again.
01:15:28Well, it's Test Match Rugby, and that's what you've got to do.
01:15:31And Scotland broke out, or broke back, one might say, against France.
01:15:34I think these New Zealanders are frightened they're capable of scoring a couple of quick tries.
01:15:38And they are.
01:15:41So that's a short one that time from Deans.
01:15:43Number 4 is Derek White.
01:15:48Now, what will Scotland do here?
01:15:49They've got the penalty from the line-out.
01:15:50They're tapping it.
01:15:51Laidlaw trying to invent something.
01:15:53Well, Wylie, he doesn't pass very well to the right, and I think he lacked confidence to do it at all.
01:15:59Now they're driving away again.
01:16:03It's gone to New Zealand again.
01:16:04Look at that.
01:16:05But another penalty for Scotland.
01:16:06I think you'll find Roy Laidlaw will be in for a quick one again.
01:16:17Wylie.
01:16:18Robertson.
01:16:20Again, it's gone to the New Zealand team.
01:16:22In position is Alan Whetton.
01:16:25It's desperate stuff now from Scotland, and they're trying so very hard.
01:16:30But really, at the moment, there's just no way through.
01:16:32No, there's not. New Zealand are playing well.
01:16:34But what they're still doing is they're still tackling marvellously.
01:16:37They're putting the guy on the ground.
01:16:41That's the little left-o'-noo.
01:16:42Craig Green.
01:16:45Kick.
01:16:50But the touch judge is glad it was up.
01:16:53That's a great little move, that left-o'.
01:16:55Usually you work it closer to the line, but that's not too bad.
01:16:58About 40 metres out still.
01:17:00Well, it just shows New Zealand scrum's going well too.
01:17:02They pushed forward and created space for them here on the outside.
01:17:06But Matt Duncan again, not to be denied.
01:17:10Penalty from the line-out.
01:17:11That's a three or four in a row now in the penalty count to Scotland.
01:17:20Come on, push there.
01:17:34So let's look now at the Scots.
01:17:36Yes, the worry lines are there.
01:17:39Paces drawn with effort.
01:17:50Michael Jones.
01:17:52Gary Whitton.
01:17:54What a run by Whitton.
01:17:55Fitzpatrick.
01:17:58That's the goal line ahead.
01:18:03Driven right up to the goal line.
01:18:07Kirk frees it.
01:18:08Fox.
01:18:09Long ball to Stanley.
01:18:11And Galahad is in under the posts.
01:18:20A marvellous surge.
01:18:21This is just the end of it.
01:18:22Long ball from Fox.
01:18:24Stanley the shorter pass.
01:18:26And John Galahad in under the posts.
01:18:31Well, John Galahad's father has come all the way from London to watch his son play.
01:18:35And this is what he sees from this replay.
01:18:38Stanley the shorter pass.
01:18:39Galahad took it on the burst.
01:18:41And it's over.
01:18:42Well, that was the fastest ball that they've provided all day.
01:18:44And that's exactly what backs need.
01:18:46And that's what happens when backs get that very quick ball.
01:18:50Galahad looks at the clock.
01:18:52The score is mounting now against Scotland.
01:18:54And New Zealand are now making this an emphatic victory.
01:18:5730 points to 3 at the moment.
01:19:05Galahad.
01:19:07Galahad.
01:19:08Galahad.
01:19:09Galahad.
01:19:10Galahad.
01:19:11Galahad.
01:19:12Galahad.
01:19:13Galahad.
01:19:14Galahad.
01:19:15Galahad.
01:19:16Galahad.
01:19:17Galahad.
01:19:18Galahad.
01:19:19Galahad.
01:19:20Galahad.
01:19:21Galahad.
01:19:22Galahad.
01:19:23Galahad.
01:19:24Galahad.
01:19:25Galahad.
01:19:26Galahad.
01:19:28Well, Hastings begins again with the big one.
01:19:30And now with the scoreboard showing 30 for New Zealand.
01:19:33And 22 for Fox.
01:19:35It's starting to look like a walk away here in this Test Match.
01:19:39It's really going to be this last 10 minutes where I suggested earlier that the mobility
01:19:44of the total New Zealand pack will always beat, I think, Scotland today and I thought
01:19:49that would happen in the last 10 minutes and they're certainly, they're basically doing
01:19:54that exactly now.
01:19:55What a fantastic run that was, leading to the last try by Gary Whitton and Sean Fitzpatrick.
01:20:02But now here are the Scots flashing the ball.
01:20:05Robertson.
01:20:06Duncan, let it go.
01:20:07He had his head up there, not looking.
01:20:12Well, that's what happens.
01:20:13The pressure goes on, you start making mistakes and everything happens around you.
01:20:18It nearly always seems down.
01:20:21So a chance for New Zealand now, just on their own 10-megamark.
01:20:28Gallagher up.
01:20:29End on end bounce.
01:20:31That ball is still in.
01:20:34It's gone parallel to the touchline.
01:20:37And Geller has got to go back and softly kick it out.
01:20:40Just as well he had some pace.
01:20:42He went to that fast floor and then hit that floor again.
01:20:45Not many men with a top back there, not fullbacks anyway.
01:20:48Dean's trying.
01:21:04To White.
01:21:05To Laidlaw.
01:21:06To Wiley.
01:21:07Colin Dean's the leader, the captain.
01:21:10Better this time for Roy Laidlaw.
01:21:13Well, another knock on.
01:21:14Again, the pressure's going on all the time from this New Zealand pack.
01:21:19There's Derek Grant.
