00:00:00New Zealand and Fiji. Our match commentators once again are Grant Nisbet and Earl Curtin.
00:00:05Thanks Tony, good afternoon everyone. Lancaster Park was abuzz last Saturday after the marvellous
00:00:10contest between Scotland and France. Today it's the turn of New Zealand and Fiji in front of this
00:00:15very good midweek crowd at Lancaster Park. New Zealand's campaign started with a 70-6
00:00:20annihilation of Italy and Fiji upset the odds with a stunning 28-9 win over Argentina. With
00:00:26me once again is former All Black and current Wellington coach Earl Curtin. And Earl it seems
00:00:31the Fijians by making nine changes to their side this afternoon are concentrating more on their
00:00:36game against Italy next Saturday and that on this one. Yes I think psychologically New Zealand have
00:00:40really beaten Fiji already on two counts. It's more or less the Fijian second team and they've
00:00:45conceded that that is almost so. And secondly that the Fijians really revere the All Blacks
00:00:52and I don't think they'll play anywhere near as well against guys that they think that are
00:00:56supreme players in terms of the rugby world. New Zealand forwards will have to be terribly tight
00:01:02too I think. They'll be as tight as canned sardines almost and endeavouring not to leave any titbits or
00:01:07scraps of loose ball for Fiji to to what we say snivel up. So New Zealand backs I can imagine too
00:01:16will be very keen to stay on their feet on their tackles. I can imagine Fiji will probably turn
00:01:24around and will be getting into kamikaze tackles like they did against the Argentine last week at
00:01:30at Hamilton and therefore spill the ball onto the deck because that's what they've got to do
00:01:35if they're going to maintain or gather any ball to run. And like William Webb Ellis they sure will
00:01:41pick it up and run. So the scene's set here at Lancaster Park. It's a beautiful day,
00:01:46a good midweek crowd in here for this full three clash between New Zealand and Fiji.
00:01:55This line-up shows nine changes from the team which beat Argentina and Hamilton. However a
00:01:59number of key players are still there. Fullback Severo Colloran Duandua is still a game-turner
00:02:04with his powerful running and prodigious kicking. The wingers Varma and Tuvulu both have plenty of
00:02:08pace. Halfback Paulo Noiro added plenty to the Fijian effort when he came on as a replacement
00:02:14of Hamilton. Big number five Iliotia Savai could prove troublesome to the All Blacks in the line-ups.
00:02:19The side is led from number eight by Kalinio Rakaroi.
00:02:24The All Blacks have retained the same back line as beat Italy at Eden Park last Friday.
00:02:28Look for frequent incursions into the line from fullback John Gallagher.
00:02:32This should provide the scoring chances for Kerwin and Green, both of whom scored two in Auckland.
00:02:36In the forward line-up John Drake replaces Richard Lowe to give the Auckland University Club four
00:02:41players in the test match, equalling a record held by another Auckland club Ponsonby since 1907.
00:02:46The other change brings the local boy Albert Anderson in at lock to replace Murray Pearce.
00:02:50David Kirk again the All Black captain this afternoon.
00:02:56And so on to Lancaster Park come the two sides. David Kirk leading the All Blacks,
00:03:01Kalinio Rakaroi the Fijians.
00:03:11The heavens above as you can see these chaps coming out. There's one thing that you do know
00:03:14is that they're so incredibly large. I don't think there's any such thing as
00:03:18having smaller backs. They're all almost the same size. Tremendous stature really for guys
00:03:24that can play and they all play the same way. I mean they're all loosies and then they're all backs
00:03:28and that's I think part of the excitement that they create wherever they play in the world.
00:03:34The Fijians gathering down towards the southern end remembering they won the toss
00:03:38and will play from right to left as we see it in the first half.
00:03:41Yes there's quite a strong sun and as they won the toss I think it's they're rather foolish because
00:03:46I think New Zealand will put a lot of balls up when they do win ball and I would if I'd won the toss.
00:06:11Eric Bevan from Wales flanked by Roger Quittenden on the right and Fred Howard on the left. Roger
00:06:16Quittenden a late replacement for Clive Norling who was down to do this game but is indisposed
00:06:21and so Roger Quittenden running the line this afternoon. Bevan refereed very well when he was
00:06:31out here last year and I think perhaps that these New Zealand, these Northern Hemisphere referees
00:06:40might actually be getting the message that that we feel very strongly out here that they
00:06:45let advantage go. Big thrill for the Southbridge farmer Albert Anderson today he plays his first
00:06:49home test match that's on the ground he knows so well here at Lancaster Park.
00:06:53And now we stand by for the theme being the war cry from the Fijians.
00:07:23And now the traditional reply from the New Zealand All Blacks.
00:07:53Music
00:08:16There's one quite interesting point to today's game. Damasi Thama has actually moved from the
00:08:20centre to the wing and he's there obviously as a big tackler and he is a good tackler
00:08:25to mark John Kerwin. So that could be interesting on this right hand side.
00:08:38The Fijians won the toss they've decided to play from right to left. Grant Fox
00:08:43about to get this second match for both sides underway in pool three.
00:08:49What a beautiful day here at Lancaster Park.
00:09:04Derek Bevan of Wales signals time on and away we go New Zealand versus Fiji at Lancaster Park.
00:09:11Early charge by the New Zealand forwards 20 metres out from the Fijian line.
00:09:16David Kirk searching for it desperately in the first 30 seconds of the game.
00:09:25Well that exemplifies the pattern that New Zealand will play.
00:09:30Good tight run Lucy's getting up there charging the ball down and then driving it into touch.
00:09:37Short line out from the Fijians the big man Thama Savai Rakaroi in there.
00:09:46Dangerous stuff in front of the goal post but it wasn't thrown in straight.
00:09:50So Derek Bevan takes them back to 15 metres in field and he'll set a scrum in a good attacking
00:09:55position for New Zealand. This is going to be interesting because this is where the Fijians
00:09:59were weak against the Argentinians. Steve McDowell on the far side of the New Zealand scrum.
00:10:15Kirk feeds. The charge from Shelford trying the left-o straight away.
00:10:20Craig Green first class try number 100 for Craig Green.
00:10:34It's worked so many times before the left-o movement
00:10:38and Craig Green waltzes in to score New Zealand's first try after just one minute.
00:10:42Wayne Shelford takes it off the back. David Kirk draws the winger in
00:10:48and Craig Green in front of his home crowd at Lancaster Park scores his 100th first class try.
00:10:55Well it was very easy here the space is created because David Kirk took two men out as you
00:10:59noticed there and left Green very free. That was rather naive. One should have held with
00:11:05Craig Green particularly his marker and winger. Electric start by New Zealand.
00:11:13Rather a scratchy start on their first match against Italy but this has been decisive.
00:11:35What a start by the All Blacks. Six points to nil. One and a half minutes gone.
00:11:49Yes it's going to be a problem with the Fijians is the scrum.
00:11:54It was a good All Black scrum and they didn't hold the ball very long in the back either.
00:11:58They quickly got it away which I like. I don't like hanging onto it in the back of the scrum.
00:12:02It makes it difficult to penetrate in the blind if you do. It's very quick delivery,
00:12:07quick strike, quick delivery and a simple try.
00:12:11Severo Corrin Duandua to restart for Fiji. Stung by an early All Black assault.
00:12:21Chance here for the Fijian backs. Breakdown though at first 5-8. Rokowai Lola.
00:12:27They really are at sixes and sevens. The All Blacks hustling through.
00:12:31Oh and Gary Whetton has pulled up just over the 22 there. Holding the knee I think.
00:12:41He sort of got entangled with the Fijian winger and they both hit their knees and
00:12:45legs as they went down. He tripped over the leg. Gary Whetton has had troubles with his knee over
00:12:55the years. Let's just go back and see whether we can watch Gary Pearce. Gary Whetton came charging
00:13:05through. Attempting to kick the ball and simply pulled up. Well he actually hit Tevula there as
00:13:15I suggested. He went across and Tevula went for it and he went for it and they both hit knees almost.
00:13:20I don't think it'd be too bad. There's more a knock on the face of the knee rather than
00:13:24on the leg of Mendoza. Michael Jones gives his opposite number. Sammy Vunivalu. Bit of a shove.
00:13:36In front of Jones. Number six is Alan Whetton. In front of him Wayne Shelford.
00:13:42Albert Anderson rising high. David Kirks kept it in. Gave it to Albert Anderson.
00:13:46All Blacks again on the charge. Just 15 meters out.
00:13:49Still tied up in the bowels of the ball. All Blacks still cramming towards the line. Only a
00:13:57couple of meters out now and the whistle went as it so often does just as the ball emerges.
00:14:07Yes it's certainly the way to play it. No scraps there.
00:14:11There's a flag extended. Roger Quittenden has got his flag out.
00:14:31Next time you're in the clubhouse was the warning
00:14:36and big clubhouse. Big clubhouse. I don't know I get more and more frustrated when I see you know
00:14:46referees come in so much and here you'll see probably the instance here
00:14:50a bit of pulling out of the ruck but I can't actually see what went on there neither could
00:14:53the referee.
00:15:03Sean Fitzpatrick was on the receiving end of a haymaker.
00:15:08Well there's been considerable comment over the years regarding the preparation and style
00:15:12of Grant Fox's goal kicking. So let's hear how he does it from the man himself.
00:15:16The whole thing for me is just preparation. Sort of immediately preparing myself to kick
00:15:21and really the whole thing is just relaxation and I say to myself at the start of each kick you
00:15:26know just relax, head down, follow through and those three words are really the key to it. My
00:15:32breathing exercises is something that Jim Blair taught me in 1984 when I had trouble against
00:15:36Sydney one day missing the close ones and getting the wide ones and he gave me this breathing
00:15:40routine and it certainly helps me relax a little bit and I think it helps in my all-round kicking.
00:15:53Chance for the All Blacks. Got to control it now here under the post. Taken ahead by McDowell.
00:16:00Should come nicely for Kirk. Now it's come on the Fiji inside. The All Blacks losing it.
00:16:05Attempting to clear it was Rockwalloa. Bray Green to Gallaher. Support from Kirk. Green again
00:16:14changes direction of play. Back to Warwick Taylor over the 22. All Blacks really hunting as a pack here.
00:16:22Joe Stanley standing wide on the right wing side. Now the All Black forces can gather again just
00:16:28out from the 22. Ripped away by Gary Whetton. John Gallagher. Sprint for the corner. Yes!
00:16:40John Gallagher has his first test try.
00:16:49Well yes that was uh it was a again a very simple move from the
00:16:54from the ruck that ensued because most of the Fijians were in it. Long build up from the All Blacks.
00:17:00Finished off by Craig Green who was standing in with John Gallagher running wide out on the left
00:17:06wing side and Gallagher doing everything right. The ball in the right hand. Plenty of pace and he
00:17:11dived in at the corner. Yes well he had plenty of space because it was a good wide pass from Kirk
00:17:17and it gave them a lot of clearance for the wide blind side and with gas like that that's all you
00:17:22need and that's Johnny Gallagher Wellington giving it the gas and diving for the corner.
00:17:32Just his second international John Gallagher.
00:17:53So
00:18:04beautifully struck by Grant Foggs but not on target. So eight minutes gone in the match
00:18:10as the Fijian team and supporters somewhat stunned by this early reversal. Well I think they're being
00:18:16I think they're being far too silly. I mean to run it it's fine but to be running around on
00:18:20your own goal line and trying to find guys with reverse passes is just suicide.
00:18:24Particularly against All Black back row.
00:18:29Gary Whetton takes it in. No he doesn't. Loses control of it. The Fijians
00:18:33now have an opportunity. 10 meters outside the 22 in All Black territory.
00:18:38There it is for Nwalu. Roko Waloa has support from Brig Prop 4 Tanga.
00:18:44Now a chance to see the Fijian back line in action. Good tackle on Lovacura though.
00:18:5110 meters out from the 22. Still in All Black territory in centre field.
00:18:56Notice the difference there. Jones was in like a flash to have grab that ball and tie it up.
00:19:01He really got there quickly. You see the last man getting up now.
00:19:06Michael Jones in just his second match on Lancaster Park.
00:19:09Played here for the Auckland Colts a couple of years ago.
00:19:14Gallaher on the blind side. This is for Kerwin to run on to. Nicely judged kick by John Gallagher.
00:19:25He's done everything right in the first 10 minutes of this game. John Gallagher.
00:19:29Yes he's keeping that ball short so as it didn't go way down the corridor
00:19:34who everyone worries about in this tournament with the big boot.
00:19:39John Drake in the front row there for the All Blacks. In the front is Steve McDowell.
00:19:42Behind him Albert Anderson jumping at two. This is aimed for Alan Wetness. Tapped in fact by Jones.
00:19:50Drake felt that he was offside. Couldn't go down after it.
00:19:54And it was Sean Fitzpatrick who was finally offside.
00:20:05Severo Corrin Duandua.
00:20:08Kicking for touch. He's on his own 10 meter line.
00:20:12This is quite unusual too. Placing the ball on a very still day. It's a beautiful day here.
00:20:19Placing the ball to go to touch. It's most unusual.
00:20:25Such a lovely balmy Christchurch day.
00:20:31Christchurch day.
00:20:35Sabai. A man who played for Waikato last year in the middle of the line out for Fiji.
00:20:40Beautifully taken in by Alan Wetton. Eight meters in All Black territory. Fox to Taylor. Joe Stanley
00:20:48saw the gap. Had good support from Michael Jones. Really running hard Jones. Play green.
00:20:53Oh this is going to be a superb try.
00:21:00Full marks to Michael Jones. It was Craig Green who scored it but it was Jones who set it up.
00:21:11Classic move from the All Blacks. The big charge came from Joe Stanley. He was held up
00:21:17and like every good flank forward Michael Jones was on the charge and look at the pace.
00:21:21Running away from the Fijians and also the intelligence to see that Craig Green was looming
00:21:26and Green had the straight run in. A well taken All Black try.
00:21:35Yes it was absolutely classical. Where do we want your flanker? Whenever you're going down
00:21:38on the backs right on your shoulder and that's exactly where he was and then he accelerated away
00:21:43but what a fine pass too from a forward. Set Craig Green free and he had the space and really no one
00:21:49to beat. But fine work. Fine work by the All Blacks. They're really firing. They might have
00:21:54been slow against Italy. They're really going well here.
00:22:13Two more for New Zealand and that's the scoreline after just 12 minutes play.
00:22:19What an impact this man's making on the World Cup. As I said earlier just his second match
00:22:23at Lancaster Park. His first ever first class game on this famous ground. Yes Murray's been
00:22:31coaching him no doubt in terms of the way he's playing and he's playing very easy. Obviously a
00:22:36man with a lot of talent. Albert Anderson leaping high. All Blacks playing with confidence. Here's
00:22:42John Kirwan. Are we going to see another one of those runs? Had to hang on to it. David Kirk over
00:22:47a run taken on now by Fitzpatrick. Rampaging All Blacks. 10 meters out from the 22. Jones tidied
00:22:55again. Stanley Yalaha needs the support. He's got it from Kirwan. Everybody's having a run on the
00:23:05All Black team. John Drake this time. A little untidy from the All Blacks. The Fijians really
00:23:15are at sixes and sevens. There's props out on the wing. They're all over the show at the moment.
00:23:20Here it finally comes to Nwalu. Out to Johnny Kumbu.
00:23:29Yes that was good football but it's also good football from the All Blacks too. They raced
00:23:32into that ruck and spewed it back very quickly and what do backs like most? Fast quick ball and
00:23:38it's making it easy for them. Passing the backs wasn't as good that time. Otherwise they could
00:23:42have had another scorer on the left. That's the 10 meter line in All Black territory. Just to the
00:23:53right of the line out. Untidy for Grant Fox but he took it in well. Made it almost to the 10 meter
00:24:00line. And a penalty against the All Blacks. So this could be a scoring opportunity for Fiji.
00:24:10They're first in the game. Yes well it's really only one side in at the present and they can't
00:24:17free enough ball as I suggested before we started. That it's going to be basically this pattern I'd
00:24:23say through most of this game. I do hope they do get some though. Just for the sake of
00:24:30crowd and help their concentration, their psyche a wee bit.
00:24:34The man they call Superboot. On the 10 meter line in All Black territory. Severo Korunduandua.
00:25:04Stroked it well. Lovely kick. Fiji on the board. Yes I think that was the word we used there. He
00:25:12stroked it well. That's what you have to do with these balls. They're worried about the synthetic
00:25:17nature of them rather than being constructed of leather and I think this is a bit of the
00:25:21gripe that most of the players have had in this tournament. They're finding them hard to kick
00:25:25because they don't give all that out there.
00:25:4216 minutes gone in the game. The All Blacks have 16 points on the board already.
00:25:47Kolo Nwalu reaching into the ruck to try and grab. It finally has. The kick from Rokowailoa.
00:25:58Gallaher read it well. About to initiate another counter-attack John Gallagher.
00:26:05Here's an opportunity though for the Fijians. There's plenty of pace on the right wing side
00:26:08there from Tevula. But he's hacked it into touch on the ball. Yes he played well against the
00:26:15Argentine of the Waikato too. He certainly has got a lot of pace. He actually looks a
00:26:22few bit short though I noticed there after his clash with Gary Wetten earlier on in the first
00:26:27five minutes of this game. Albert Anderson going high. Got it on the second take for the All Blacks.
00:26:37Had support from Wayne Shelford.
00:26:44Carried on by Sean Fitzpatrick.
00:26:49Now it's there by Kirk Fox.
00:26:52Just lost concentration for a moment Grant Fox as he tried to deliver it on.
00:26:56Referee playing at advantage.
00:26:57Gallagher and the kick from John Kirwan is in touch on the floor. Good application of the
00:27:11rule by Derek Bevan. Waited for him with some advantage and there was finally two Fiji.
00:27:22Fiji aren't getting much ball at two either in the lineup.
00:27:25And they didn't get much even against Wilkinson for Wellington either later on.
00:27:30Well that was a soft take for Alan Witten. He didn't really have to jump at all.
00:27:33Just landed in his lap as the All Blacks again move up towards the 10 meter line.
00:27:37Kirk the call on the blind side from Grant Fox.
00:27:41Corrin Duandua coming through. Took it nicely. Nwalu across to Raka Wailoa.
00:27:49That's rather an aimless kick straight to Alan Witten.
00:27:51Good support from Gallagher. It's all just a little untidy at the moment.
00:28:00And that's exactly what Fiji want. They want some of that loose ball that rolls around.
00:28:09Plenty of local support it would seem for the Fijian side.
00:28:14That's the halfway line just to the left.
00:28:15With the Pele Raka to throw for Fiji.
00:28:21And the All Blacks coming through. Wayne Shelford waltzing straight through the Fijian lineup.
00:28:27Worked back though to Fiji. Johnny Kumbu got a hand to it.
00:28:30Looked as though he might have knocked it on a little. Referees let it go.
00:28:33Tevula on the right wing side. 10 meter line in Fiji territory.
00:28:45Almost halfway through the first half. 20 minutes and the All Blacks are hit by 16 points to three.
00:29:00Big scrum here from the All Blacks. We saw the Argentinian scrum pushing Fiji back on Sunday.
00:29:04Wayne Shelford.
00:29:11Awkward for Grant Fox. There's no one out there. He has to change his mind.
00:29:14Craig Green had come in. Oh there's a pumping tackle on Fox. Still holding it though.
00:29:22Now the All Black forwards control it.
00:29:29Just out from the 22. On they go. They've lost control of it now but Fiji have been penalized.
00:29:36Players coming through on the wrong side of the ruck.
00:29:40Yes they're going to be a bit frustrated there.
00:29:44And just picked it up on the wrong side of the ruck.
00:29:48But they're just not playing tightly enough the Fijians and they'll have to do something
00:29:53in terms of even ruck ball. If they can't hold on in scrums,
00:29:56they've got to be a lot tighter in rucks. Otherwise they're going to get very little ball play.
00:30:14So
00:30:26practically in front of the post for Grant Fox.
00:30:44So
00:30:54that's the second one that's hit the post. This time it's over.
00:30:59And the All Blacks lead by 19 to 3.
00:31:14I don't know what to do for Fiji. I think that I think I might have to kick more,
00:31:18put more up and unders, and try and create a little bit of ascension behind
00:31:21the All Black backs. But then that's throwing the ball away. They're really on the horns of a dilemma.
00:31:26Wondering what on earth they can do to get more ball.
00:31:32This one's been pushed a little too far once again. Gary Whetton almost had it.
00:31:36Twin brother Alan has it though. David Kirk with the kick.
00:31:38Flank forward to Vunivalo has a run. No support at all on his own 10 meter line.
00:31:47No discipline in this Fijian play this afternoon. The All Blacks swarming into it. 10 meters out
00:31:53from the 22. Kirk across to Fox. Kirwan standing wide as Alan Whetton. Kirwan again.
00:31:59Everybody in the action. Sean Fitzpatrick trying to set up the ball.
00:32:02And his hands in there from the Fijians.
00:32:11The All Blacks stack their authority on this match after just one minute and have not released the
00:32:17grip. Yes, I noticed there that five of their tight forwards just didn't even bother to get
00:32:21back on the right side of that rug at all. They just hung off on the blind side.
00:32:25And that's sad when you've only been going around about 25 minutes.
00:32:41Grant Fox so far this afternoon has converted two tries and kicked a penalty. So seven points
00:32:48to go with 22 scored against Italy last Friday.
00:32:55This is about the time Grant Fox will be saying to himself, relax, head down, follow through.
00:33:26He struck it beautifully. Never looked like missing. Second penalty goal to Grant Fox. 22-3.
00:33:38I'm quite pleased to see Fox keeping on kicking them. This means at some other stage in the year
00:33:43that he mightn't kick them. And I hope like the devil that it's when Auckland plays Wellington
00:33:46later on in the year. Well, the mind boggles as to what the score might be at full time.
00:33:53It's 22-3 now.
00:33:57Anderson calls for it. Aublach playing with total control in this first half.
00:34:05The Fijians have hardly taken a trick in the first 27 minutes of the game.
00:34:13Kirk to Fox. John Kirwan waltzing through tackles. No one wants to take him down.
00:34:20Came off a Fijian knee, I think. Here's an opportunity for
00:34:24Dahmer. Tomasi Dahmer on the left wing side. He's put his foot in the touch.
00:34:30Mosesi Tanga wouldn't believe his luck. He was heading for the line, but
00:34:34this man, Tomasi Dahmer, on the left wing side, just put it foot across the touchline.
00:34:49I thought that you survive more in the middle of the line-out. He's at number four.
00:34:54Four back, that is, in the line-out.
00:34:59Good leap from Gary Whetton. Clean ball again. Taylor turns it back to Stanley, who's charging
00:35:05again with Jones right at his shoulder. That's the 10-meter line of Fijian territory.
00:35:09All Blacks carrying it on left. Taylor. Warwick Taylor. Support from Shelford and Craig Green
00:35:19as his third try.
00:35:33Once again, the All Blacks encountering little or no opposition here.
00:35:37A good run from Warwick Taylor. Dummy to John Gallagher. Cut in field,
00:35:41then did the right thing. When you cut in, cut out, as the old saying.
00:35:44And Wayne Shelford was in support, and Craig Green
00:35:48has scored his third try, and we've only had 28 minutes of the game.
00:35:51Well, that was a classic setup. It was beautifully rucked ball.
00:36:07Spewed back again at pace. They took the right option. Fox did. Went blind.
00:36:12And of course, there were so many men there in the end. There were about five or six chaps on
00:36:15the blind to two Fijians. They just had to score. But great setup by the New Zealand Fords.
00:36:22Beautiful drive forward. Quick ball back. Good night.
00:36:34Craig Fox. Already 12 points in the match. And that's a massive punt by Fox.
00:36:41Some may be having trouble with the ball, but not this man, Grant Fox.
00:36:47Well, he's basically striking the ball. It's that relaxing bit that he says to himself,
00:36:51and with, in a game like this now, the pressure off, you'll find that he'll kick very well.
00:37:00Three-man line-out called by the Fijians. New Zealand represented by Anderson and the two Wettens.
00:37:05New Zealand represented by Anderson and the two Wettens.
00:37:09Didn't look straight. Alan Wetten, no. At least it was Wayne Shelford.
00:37:1615 meters out. Fijian captain Rakaroi took it away.
00:37:24They're just going in dribs and drabs at the moment, the Fijians.
00:37:28Big prop forward, Guala Guala carries it on, but they're not really making any progress. Just on
00:37:32the 22. Loose ball. Finally, he's set a three-quarter. Lovakura. Chance again for Varma.
00:37:43He's playing on his wrong wing. He was going for his wrong foot there too. He should have gone for
00:37:49the line-side foot rather than his right one. And it makes a big difference to some people
00:37:54when you change from right to left wing. And he found that difficult then to adapt there.
00:38:03A good leap again by Alan Wetten. Albert Anderson on the charge to the 22. Ball not lost forward.
00:38:10The referee says carry on. Again, the Fijians under pressure. This time though, the All Blacks are penalised.
00:38:19Here's Warwick Caleb trying to snivel that away while he lay on the ground.
00:38:22One penalty so far. That's all that Fiji has on the board. The All Blacks leading by 28 points to three.
00:38:37All Blacks have started it quickly again. Taylor. Scrapped and a good tackle by Huka Rakai.
00:38:56All Black forces gathering quickly once more. 10 metre line in All Black territory.
00:39:00There it is for Kirk to Fox. Gallaher ranging wide again. Craig Green has the run.
00:39:10That's the sort of pass we expect from the Fijians across to Johnny Kumba. But he had no support.
00:39:19And really there's no coordination in this Fijian side. Yes, it was sad. He had 10 chaps
00:39:24I counted then. 10 Fijians were actually in front of him when he went for that
00:39:28kick back towards touch. And that's just too many guys to have on the wrong side of the board.
00:39:3722 metre line in Fijian territory just to the right in this line out.
00:39:41A rare line out win for Fiji. Good clearance by Kualu Nuwalu,
00:39:47a man who came on as a replacement against Argentina and Hamilton.
00:39:50Some 6,000 school children here at Lancaster Park this afternoon.
00:40:00Most of the schools around Christchurch have been closed for the afternoon.
00:40:07Once again looking for Michael Jones towards the back. Bounce nicely for Kirk.
00:40:11Change of tactics here from the All Blacks.
00:40:13He's not going to find the line. Chance for the All Blacks to open up.
00:40:22Green a little bit indecisive and there's a crunching tackle. All Blacks have it again. Fox
00:40:31looking for the touch line.
00:40:35Very good kick from Grant Fox even though it didn't find the line.
00:40:38Varma for Fiji. Fox again. Gallagher. All Blacks running it from everywhere. Warwick Taylor.
00:40:48Did a quick 360. 10 metre line. Fijian territory. Michael Jones. Now there's a line up. Shelford.
00:40:56Stanley. Kerwin Enfield. Up towards the 22.
00:40:59Pretty tight in there. John Kerwin is somewhere in amongst it.
00:41:09The All Blacks will be keen to get it back to David Kirk. The backs are all lined to the left.
00:41:17Well the Fijians played that ploy where they did put Varma onto this wing to look after Kerwin.
00:41:22He's not doing a bad job. He's not actually knocking him over because Kerwin's so strong
00:41:25staying on his feet but he is giving it a real crank. He's at least stopping the man
00:41:29and he's finding it hard. That is John Kerwin's finding hard to beat Tomasi Varma.
00:41:38This game is being played at a frenetic pace. Michael Jones
00:41:44down with an injury.
00:41:55Crowd here at Lancaster Park today. Every bit as good as we saw here on Saturday when Scotland
00:42:03played France. And there was between 18 and 20,000 there that day. So I would imagine the
00:42:10same here today. And they've seen an All Blacks side rampaging around Lancaster Park. Big John
00:42:17Drake back into the All Black team today to complete the All Auckland front row of himself,
00:42:21Steve McDowell and Sean Fitzpatrick. About six minutes to go in the first half.
00:42:42Ball held up there in the scrum. The referee Derek Bevan of Wales wants the scrum taken again.
00:42:51Big gap for David Kirk. Plenty of speed and easy.
00:43:11Electrifying burst by David Kirk. The Fiji defence just wasn't there.
00:43:22He had plenty of time to think about it. And he really has got some
00:43:26toe David Kirk. And he flew through the defence and dived in in the corner.
00:43:31Yes, there's one thing here. One, the flanker doesn't come off quickly enough to bowl him.
00:43:35But the point is, it's the beauty of having Kerwin on that right wing. Notice how the wing was,
00:43:40Kama Tharma that is, was terribly worried about his wing. So never ever went near David Kirk
00:43:45and let him have that angled run in behind. And David Kirk's quick enough to take most angles
00:43:50and he did just that. There wouldn't be many All Blacks faster off the mark than
00:43:56this little fellow David Kirk. He really can go over the first 10 or 15 metres.
00:44:20Magnificent kick.
00:44:39There's Clive Norling on the left, reporting the kick from Grant Fox.
00:44:43And Tom Doocy, New Zealand referee, on the right.
00:44:52Well, there's one thing about it. It's always great having a foil, as I said before, like
00:44:56Kerwin. Kerwin takes two men off, off on the runners. And even though he doesn't make too
00:45:00many runs, as he hasn't done in his first half today, at least he makes it for those players
00:45:06inside. All Blacks control it once more. Three minutes out from half time.
00:45:1434 points to three. Could be all sorts of records set in this test match if the All Blacks carry on.
00:45:20And they've gained a penalty.
00:45:28He penalised VG there for taking the ruck down, collapsing the ruck.
00:45:37It's quite a dangerous ploy. You see some sides send in kamikazes, as a lot refer to them, to
00:45:46take down these rucks. And it makes it very, very dangerous. And Bevan quickly stepped in there to
00:45:55stop that.
00:46:04Once again, the shortened line-out from the Fijians. They've won little or no ball in this
00:46:09phase of play. This time they have. Varma it was. Ripped away from him by Fitzpatrick.
00:46:15But it was knocked forward.
00:46:20He's up the way he played against the Argentine. I thought Savard would get a lot more ball today.
00:46:25Now Kirk, way to Fox. Taylor missing out. Stanley Gallagher scything in again.
00:46:43Can Cravery take the pass? Gallagher went on his own. Jones was there quickly. Stanley looked as
00:46:50though it was forward. Through the forward pass to Warwick Taylor. Don't know what Craig Green was
00:46:57doing there. Coming back, Gallagher has enough pace to go straight through. And he would have
00:47:01gone for the last line of defence. Craig Green would have had his third, fourth try.
00:47:06But Fiji ready on the back foot. And they have been right from the start.
00:47:19Six.
00:47:3415 metres out from the Fijian line. Albert Anderson goes for the charge. There was some lifting.
00:47:41And the All Blacks are penalised.
00:47:50So
00:48:05that's a big kick.
00:48:10That's landed inside the All Black territory.
00:48:14Close to half-time. The All Blacks have scored five prize in the first half.
00:48:29Gary went and went high. It was untidy though for Kirk.
00:48:33There's been quite a few tap backs that haven't been as well controlled as one would expect. Particularly the state of the game being what it is.
00:48:40Raka Roy at the back for Fiji. Savai in the middle. And Georgie Dahmer up front. Looking for Raka Roy.
00:48:51Got a nice tap to Nawalu. Haven't seen the Fijian backs in action at all this afternoon.
00:48:57Here's John Kirwan on the charge. Alan Wettin's had another good game. Always in support. 10 metres
00:49:04up from the 22 Fijian territory. Kirk. Oh that man's offside. Must be. Puka Epele Rakai.
00:49:16Probably figured it was better to concede three but the All Blacks have tapped it. Wayne Shelford.
00:49:22Sits nicely again for Kirk Fox. Gallaherd and again. Craig Green. Number four coming up for Craig Green.
00:49:41Here's Craig Green. He mightn't be the fastest guy you've ever seen playing on the wing for New Zealand.
00:49:45But by Joe he uses what he's got and uses his intelligence terribly well. He's a very very clever player.
00:49:52I often think that he might make a marvellous centre three quarter with the amount of skill
00:49:56he has. Just steps inside. Look at this again. Moves out. Moves round them. Beautiful body swerves
00:50:03and into the in I thought to the corner. But he made it so easy and he beat so many guys in the
00:50:08run to it behind the sticks. Here it is. Once again it was set up by Gallagher. But Craig Green this
00:50:16time had to beat two or three players to score the try. With New Zealand rucks going like this
00:50:23and the ball being free very very quickly like the New Zealand forwards are giving it.
00:50:27Gallagher is going to be a terribly potent force for New Zealand. They're going to find that extra
00:50:31pace that he injects into the blind side when he does come in. Four of them scored by Craig Green
00:50:36out of the left wing side. A phenomenal first half performance and that's four tries by Craig Green
00:50:41equals the New Zealand test record set by Duncan McGregor way back in 1905 against England.
00:50:48So records certainly going out the window here in this inaugural Rugby World Cup.
00:50:57Well I suppose the thing is what can we say about Fiji on how they hang on. I think that really
00:51:02they are waiting for Italy and that's about it.
00:51:05They'll have to be an Italian job on the Italians later on on next Sunday.
00:51:13Second half underway. The All Blacks lead by 40 points to three
00:51:17as they turn around and play from right to left in the second half.
00:51:21Grant Fox scored 16 points in the first spell.
00:51:27So Alan Hewson's record of 26 in a test match is under threat from this man.
00:51:35Once again a shortened lineup from the Fijians. They've won
00:51:39little or no lineup all throughout the game. Once again the All Blacks have it Kirk.
00:51:4710 meters out from the 22. The danger is here the All Blacks will loosen up as a result
00:51:53of being 40 to three ahead. Yes some of them might want to get on the end of some of those
00:51:58tries but not many of them want to leave the field anyhow. In a game like this there's always a chance
00:52:03perhaps even one of the fat popos scoring a try on the front row.
00:52:15Fiji inside have been outgunned at all aspects of this game.
00:52:33The last time these two sides met in Suva New Zealand won by 45 points to nil.
00:52:42Only three New Zealand players in this team today remain.
00:52:53Grant Fox inside the 22.
00:52:58One of those players in fact is Craig Green, Warwick Taylor and Gary Whetton.
00:53:04Craig Green must remember the Fijian experience quite well because he scored
00:53:08a try on that occasion. So also to Gary Whetton who's never scored a try in an official test match.
00:53:19Early lineup all here for the Fijians. The kick from Rokawailoa puts pressure on John
00:53:24Gallaher inside his 22 and he took it safely. Doesn't ignore the defensive aspects of the game.
00:53:34He took a nasty bump though as he took the fair catch.
00:53:40He's a very brave chap. In fact he can't be too brave.
00:53:52The man who came to New Zealand five months after leaving school. He did have time though
00:53:56to play a couple of games for the London Irish before he came to New Zealand to play for Oriental
00:54:00Rongotai in Wellington. Fijians have won two lineouts, balls in a row. Right wing three-quarter
00:54:11Tebulu had a chance. Now the chase is on again led by Craig Green who's sniffing for try number five.
00:54:30Quickly thrown to Anderson. The All Blacks keeping the game fluid.
00:54:35John Kirwan hasn't had a try yet but he might get one here and he will clean through.
00:54:53Nobody wanted to tackle John Kirwan.
00:54:57Came in on the inside of Warwick Taylor and waltzed his way round rather than through all the Fijian tackles
00:55:07and simply had too much pace and the All Blacks have scored their seventh try in the match.
00:55:16Yes well this is a absolute case of the front five believing that they never have to make
00:55:21tackles and left it to somebody else. By that stage with a guy this man's pace and guile it
00:55:25was too late and so it was very very easy really. Just running the wrong way in the forwards not
00:55:31endeavouring that is the Fijian forwards to hit him. John Kirwan will be stung by the fact that
00:55:37Craig Green has now scored more test tries than he. Green has eight at least has nine. Kirwan with
00:55:42that one goes to eight. Yes he was running around having a look on the other side he thought it was
00:55:49obviously greener on the on the green side.
00:56:12Deadly goal kicking from Brad Fox.
00:56:16His sixth conversion.
00:56:20Well I presume things to look for now is to see how well these New
00:56:36Zealand leases go. One might concentrate on Michael Jones, a Jones boy for instance.
00:56:40The All Blacks not bothering to force behind for the 22.
00:56:50Another powerful punt from Grant Fox.
00:56:5240 to 3 at halftime. 46 to 3 now. They've had three minutes in the second spin.
00:57:15All Blacks penalised. Some lifting going on there in the line out.
00:57:17And it looks like the big fullback Severo Korunduandua is going to kick the goal.
00:57:29Yes he's coming out to obviously improve his strike rate.
00:57:34He's a marvellous big player. He played so well too for Fiji against
00:57:38Wellington when we played recently in Suva. And a prodigious punter of the ball.
00:57:44And in fact the Fijians call him Big Boot or they call him the Fijian Don Cloud.
00:58:05Struck it beautifully. Oh that's a fine kick.
00:58:08Yes you'll notice how the balls have flown well off his boot and Fox's too.
00:58:16And it's really because they stroke the ball rather than punch it.
00:58:19Early on Korunduandua was punching it and he's obviously learned very rapidly in the last couple
00:58:24of days because he's just stroking it over now. And it seems to be the way to kick these
00:58:30controversial balls to say the least.
00:58:38Grant Fox 18 points so far in the match.
00:59:02Albert Anderson's had a good going for the all-blatch. He's won it again.
00:59:06Five meters out from the 22. They'll get it finally back to Grant Fox.
00:59:12It's taking a bit of time this time. Back to David Kirk in fact. There it is.
00:59:19Taylor was standing in. Craig Green. Now Jones to Taylor.
00:59:26Fijians swarming in a little better for the tackles.
00:59:28Fox on the blind side.
00:59:37That's good support from Alan Whetton.
00:59:41All-black simply setting it up here. Stanley, Taylor for John Kirwan to chase.
00:59:47It's a well judged kick. Korunduandua has made a mess of it.
00:59:50And threw the ball away and has got penalized.
00:59:59Sunny move.
01:00:03Kirwan with a tap. Gary Whetton. Very, very close.
01:00:13Whistle might have been a little premature.
01:00:15Gary Whetton could see the try line. He could see his first ever test try.
01:00:31All-black scrum is big and strong. Wayne Shelford. Can he get it down? Penalty try.
01:00:39We've had plenty of these at the World Cup and that's another one.
01:00:43Yes, these Northern Hemisphere lads love those, don't they?
01:00:52Well, the Fijian scrum collapsed. And that was probably the ruling.
01:00:58Wayne Shelford couldn't get it down onto the ground, but the scrum had collapsed.
01:01:02And a penalty try.
01:01:04I didn't know what on earth they could have done to do anything else.
01:01:06They were down on the ground, they couldn't move any further back.
01:01:08There was nothing they could do. And they hadn't collapsed, they went over them back.
01:01:12I thought that was rather harsh in a sense.
01:01:18A bit hard to keep up here. 52 points to 6. Grant Fox lands conversion number 7.
01:01:26Takes his own personal tally to 20.
01:01:30And it's a very dejected looking Fijian side that trudges back to halfway.
01:01:42This one will go dead, so the All Blacks will be forced to restart from the 22.
01:02:06George Simpkins said that the Fijians were going to live to play another day.
01:02:10Fiji is obviously on Sunday, so if you're intending going on Sunday in Dunedin, don't give it away yet.
01:02:15They play like this one week, and they play brilliantly the next.
01:02:2210 minutes gone on the second half. The All Blacks 52 to 6 ahead.
01:02:26It came from the knee of Alan Wettner, it looked as though it had.
01:02:29But Derek Bevan says it's a knock-on.
01:02:35Fijian captain Kalinio Rakoroi.
01:02:44Fijians having a run, but again the All Blacks swarming all over them.
01:02:47Nwalu taken down by Warwick Taylor.
01:02:50Joe Stanley across to John Kerwin. A bit of room to move Kerwin, but the whistle's gone.
01:02:57Yes, I thought that was rather flat ball. It wasn't very flat ball, but it's one of those minor mistakes.
01:03:03You run across from time to time.
01:03:05You'd think with the size of those Fijians, they'd be better at scrummaging.
01:03:08I think it's the fact they don't like it much, really.
01:03:10They're more instant running, and it's against the natural exuberance of the race.
01:03:16And I think that they obviously don't spend enough time doing it.
01:03:24All Blacks screw the scrum around, and it comes on the All Blacks side.
01:03:27Anderson has had a very good game.
01:03:29Grant Fox, here's one for Craig Green.
01:03:34Michael Jones is there to Kirk.
01:03:38And just a hand got in there from one of the Fijians, and denied a chance to Alan Witt.
01:03:47When I made that comment about the scrummaging, it's not that George Simpkin hasn't been spending enough time on it.
01:03:52He really has been trying, but I think there's only about one scrum machine in the whole of Fiji.
01:03:57They don't get a terrible amount of practice in it.
01:04:03Sean Fitzpatrick.
01:04:06Fijians contesting a little better in the second half in the line-outs.
01:04:26That really never was going to go into touch. It was a bad angle for a place kick.
01:04:37Green gives it across to Gallagher.
01:04:39The All Blacks looking to attack from their own 22.
01:04:42Craig Green.
01:04:45Ten metre line in All Black territory.
01:04:47Horses slowly gathering.
01:04:50Now Kirk.
01:04:51Now Kirk.
01:04:55No support there for David Kirk on halfway.
01:04:57Has it again.
01:04:58Has a third shot at it.
01:05:00Craig Green's got no-one out here with him at all.
01:05:04And he's done the right thing, Craig Green. He's done it well.
01:05:14Yes, he's displaying the other skills he has.
01:05:17One can't talk too highly of him, really.
01:05:19I've watched a lot of games down here at Christchurch and Shield times.
01:05:23And one always remarks on the tremendous amount of skill he shows in the course of an 80-minute game.
01:05:33Big leap by Georgie Dahmer. The All Blacks have it again, though.
01:05:36Missing out Taylor Stanley. He'll look for Taylor.
01:05:40Hacked ahead by Warwick Taylor. Ball still loose.
01:05:43Referee waiting for his advantage, though.
01:05:47That's a good advantage again there by Mr Bevan.
01:05:57All Blacks have an injury. Steve McDowell has gone down.
01:06:03Yes, it looks like his ankle.
01:06:12Big Steve McDowell today playing his eighth international.
01:06:17Hasn't been in the try scoring action so far today. Most have.
01:06:21But he did get his first test try against Italy the other day.
01:06:30Big crowd here at Lancaster Park today has probably found it difficult to enthuse over this game.
01:06:35Because the All Blacks started so well and the Fijian side really haven't been in it at any stage.
01:06:41For those of you who have joined late in the viewing and didn't hear George Simpkin before 3 o'clock talking on the view he went into the game,
01:06:53or the Fiji were going into this particular game,
01:06:56was that he was very worried about the injuries he had and the way, how tired they were.
01:07:01And he was obviously saving them for Italy on Sunday.
01:07:05And I think it sort of permeated the whole team really.
01:07:08Then they came out almost playing that way.
01:07:10They've played very much in drips and starts.
01:07:13And nothing like the team we saw against the Argentina even though the All Blacks have played terribly well.
01:07:2415 minutes gone on the second half.
01:07:26The All Blacks led 40 to 3 at halftime.
01:07:28They're now ahead by 52 to 6 and they've got a big scrum.
01:07:32However, the Fijians have taken it away.
01:07:35Korunduoduo, it's loose.
01:07:36Wayne Shelford.
01:07:38Untidy stuff from the Fijians.
01:07:40They've given it away to the All Blacks.
01:07:43Sean Fitzpatrick.
01:07:47Stay up, said David Kirk.
01:07:48He wants them on their feet.
01:07:51It'll finally come to him.
01:07:53He's having all sorts of trouble getting a hold of it though.
01:07:56Big drop forward.
01:07:57Mozesi-Tanga goes for a run.
01:08:00This is more like the Fijian spirit we saw at Hamilton.
01:08:03Yes, that was the first rush and the first bit of play we've seen from them in that sort of vein.
01:08:12Still on the 22 metre line of Fiji.
01:08:14And he's got a big gap there.
01:08:16And he's got a big gap there.
01:08:17He's got a big gap there.
01:08:18He's got a big gap there.
01:08:19He's got a big gap there.
01:08:20And he's got a big gap there.
01:08:21And he's got a big gap there.
01:08:22And he's got a big gap there.
01:08:23Still on the 22 metre line of Fijian territory.
01:08:26The All Blacks, eight tries so far in the game.
01:08:35Good leap again by Alan Whetton.
01:08:36He's had some free jumping at the back.
01:08:40Now Kirk to Fox.
01:08:42Taylor.
01:08:44Ray Green.
01:08:45Hit it hard.
01:08:46Good support from Stanley.
01:08:48Gary Whetton again, five metres out.
01:08:50Five metres out.
01:08:53On the blind side.
01:08:54Gallagher.
01:08:57Oh dear me.
01:08:58Prize given.
01:09:01No.
01:09:02Didn't think so.
01:09:04Roger Quinton had said he hit the flag first.
01:09:07Yes, I think that was a fair call.
01:09:09I'm sorry girls.
01:09:2122 metre dropout.
01:09:27What can John Kirwan conjure up from here?
01:09:29He's got to beat his own man first.
01:09:31Does that easily enough.
01:09:34Gets into Fijian territory.
01:09:35Has support from Wayne Shelford.
01:09:38Line up has the flag out.
01:09:39The Fijians have infringed.
01:09:40But the referees watching the play at the moment.
01:09:47There's Fred Howard in the background.
01:09:49He saw something he didn't like.
01:09:51Pointed it on the Fijian side.
01:09:54And in fact one of the All Blacks has been felled.
01:09:57Yes, it's Kirwan.
01:09:58I think he was probably taken out very late.
01:10:03Let's have a look at that incident.
01:10:04Just a minute or so ago when John Gallagher dived for the corner.
01:10:08And it looked fairly obvious I think that he whacked the flag.
01:10:11Never really got the ball down at all.
01:10:13And a good decision by Roger Quinton.
01:10:20Wasn't originally going to do this game Roger Quinton.
01:10:23It was Clive Norling who was supposed to be running the line.
01:10:33This one will notice that they have the English referees.
01:10:36The ones officiating at the game.
01:10:38They put one on the sideline.
01:10:39They obviously need friends out here.
01:10:41Or they feel as though they do.
01:10:43And with Bevan being a Welshman.
01:10:46And officiating today at this game.
01:10:48Norling should have been on the sideline.
01:10:57So Grant Fox driving play back.
01:10:59As Richard Lowe is warming up.
01:11:02Steve McDowell obviously feels that the ankle injury.
01:11:07Will take him from the field.
01:11:13All Blacks winning the line outs by 2 to 1.
01:11:16Taylor.
01:11:18Joe Stanley on the charge.
01:11:20Straight through.
01:11:21John Gallagher gets his second.
01:11:35All set up by Smokin' Joe Stanley.
01:11:38He really hit this one at pace.
01:11:40And the Fijian defence really didn't want to know about him.
01:11:43Straight through he went.
01:11:45And the support was there.
01:11:47Michael Jones got out again.
01:11:49And handed the last pass to John Gallagher who scored his second.
01:11:53It was really taken over.
01:11:54The gas was really shoved on by Warwick Taylor.
01:11:58And that's where the impetus for the attack occurred.
01:12:01He ran straight and he ran hard.
01:12:03And then it was easy for Joe Stanley.
01:12:04Because he sucked Joe off the blocks.
01:12:06And he streamed through the hole outside.
01:12:09And then again ever present.
01:12:11The Jones lad was up outside to flip to Kipper Gallagher.
01:12:17Straight through.
01:12:248th conversion for Grant Fox.
01:12:27John Gallagher's got 2 tries.
01:12:31It's 58 points to 6.
01:12:35Richard Lowe still waiting the call.
01:12:39You'd never have seen an Argentinian go through 3 tackles like that on Sunday.
01:12:43It was the tackling now is non-existent.
01:12:47Not a good kick-off.
01:12:48The All Blacks have it under control straight away.
01:12:53The man in front though, Derek Bevan.
01:12:56Spied a Fijian player who had got ahead of the kicker at kick-off time.
01:13:01And so back we go to half-way.
01:13:05This is where the lack of discipline creeps in.
01:13:07When you're well down you stop thinking.
01:13:08And it's very, very hard to think well when you're on a hiding like this.
01:13:17May not be required.
01:13:18Richard Lowe, Steve McDowell.
01:13:21Feels he can carry on at this stage.
01:13:26Gallagher in again.
01:13:29Awkward pass for Kirwin.
01:13:31Nicely flipped to Joe Stanley.
01:13:33Way to go again the All Blacks.
01:13:36Almost to the 22.
01:13:37Carried up by Michael Jones.
01:13:40It'll be a penalty.
01:13:42I still think he should have allowed advantage there if he'd have been...
01:13:46It was obvious that there were so many backs up that they were going to run well there.
01:13:49But it's good play by the All Blacks.
01:13:54Stanley across to Kirwin.
01:13:57Standing up John Kirwin.
01:13:59Good hands from Stanley.
01:14:02All Blacks 20 metres out.
01:14:06Now Kirk, there's a real line-up here.
01:14:08Taylor.
01:14:12Good strong running from Warwick Taylor.
01:14:14Charging towards the line the All Blacks.
01:14:19Now Kirk.
01:14:20To Gallagher.
01:14:21Try number three.
01:14:27Again that wide ball out to the blind side.
01:14:29It's a marvellous ball and you can get it when it takes it so wide around the defence it makes it very easy.
01:14:35A series of attacks mounted by the All Blacks.
01:14:38It was Warwick Taylor who took it back in the field.
01:14:41He ran very strongly.
01:14:43Had good support there from Alan Witten.
01:14:45Driving up very close to the line.
01:14:51And...
01:14:53Across it went to John Gallagher.
01:14:55And the Wellington full-back scores his third.
01:14:59The most tries by an All Black full-back in a Test match.
01:15:09Well played.
01:15:19That's nine conversions now to Grant Fox.
01:15:22And according to the Rockman's Rugby Yearbook,
01:15:25the previous record was eight held by Jay Bancroft at Wales against France at 1910.
01:15:30Here's this lovely wide pass but it wasn't really that that set it up.
01:15:33New Zealand playing well.
01:15:34They've been driving down the right-hand touchline,
01:15:37not putting it into touch,
01:15:39continual feeding it back inside to find another player on the burst in support
01:15:44and coming off the rump of the player distributor.
01:15:46Good play by the Fords.
01:15:50Grant Fox surveys the options.
01:15:55And really this is an absolute bath.
01:15:58They've got about 16 or 17 minutes still to go in the game.
01:16:01Grant Fox has 24 points in the Test match.
01:16:14Well the Italian side might have been a little ashamed in their performance
01:16:17against the All Blacks on opening day.
01:16:19One wonders how the Fijians feel today.
01:16:25I don't think they'll be too darned hard, actually.
01:16:28Alan Whetton did the leaping.
01:16:29Alan Whetton did the leaping.
01:16:30There's some pushing going on though.
01:16:40Shot at goal coming up
01:16:42from Severo Korunduandua.
01:16:46Well I'm absolutely convinced that the Fijians came out
01:16:49not really worrying about this game at all
01:16:51and once that creeps through a team,
01:16:53psychologically you're away.
01:16:55And that's exactly what they've been.
01:16:57They thought, well we'll go out and we'll try it.
01:16:59If it works early and we get a couple of quick tries, or early tries,
01:17:02or New Zealand plays poorly,
01:17:04we'll have a crack.
01:17:05Otherwise, we won't worry too much.
01:17:08It's all on Italia Sunday.
01:17:21Nine points in the game then to Fiji.
01:17:24Unfortunately for them, the All Blacks have got 64.
01:17:39Well you'd think that the All Blacks would loosen up
01:17:42but there's still plenty of discipline being applied.
01:17:44That's good.
01:17:45They're really roaring into it together.
01:17:47They're trying to roll them all a wee bit more,
01:17:49which is fair enough at this time of the game.
01:17:51And with the cushion and points that they've got,
01:17:53but they still haven't really loosened up.
01:17:55And if you're frightened that we might have been taking them a bit easily,
01:17:58or they might take the next opponent a wee bit easily,
01:18:00don't worry too much.
01:18:02I think they'll give Argentina heaps too
01:18:04when they play in Wellington on Monday.
01:18:10Gary wettened quickly there.
01:18:11It was taken in though by Thunga for Fiji.
01:18:16Once again the All Blacks penalised.
01:18:19Just 12 metres inside Fijian territory.
01:18:25Nwalu taps it.
01:18:26Rokawailoa, Johnny Kumbu changes direction.
01:18:31No conviction in this running at all.
01:18:34Finally it's Tavula who makes the burst.
01:18:41Yes, the big difference between the Argentinians and the All Blacks
01:18:44playing against them is the fact that they've come up
01:18:46and they've taken up that space as we say.
01:18:48They've given them no room to move in at all.
01:18:50Really roared into them.
01:18:52Former All Black Wayne Smith, interested spectator.
01:19:00Chance here for the Fijians.
01:19:01Rakai Lahuka has a burst.
01:19:04Inside the 22.
01:19:07Gary wetten disturbs the ball for the Fijians.
01:19:10Rokawailoa over the 22.
01:19:13It was knocked forward by Fiji.
01:19:15The referee waiting for advantage.
01:19:18Wrong option too.
01:19:19Sad.
01:19:20We got pressurised into going inside.
01:19:21We had a line-up of about 7 on 4 on the left-hand side of the field
01:19:25from that quick run for the Fijians.
01:19:27One of the few, they won.
01:19:32David Kirk on the New Zealand 22.
01:19:35All Blacks have scored 10 tries so far this afternoon.
01:19:39Three of them from John Gallagher.
01:19:41Three of them from John Gallagher.
01:20:04Players involved in the match tomorrow between Italy and Argentina
01:20:07here at Lancaster Park.
01:20:09More line-up ball for the All Blacks.
01:20:11Fox.
01:20:12Stanley.
01:20:13Michael Jones.
01:20:16Five metres inside Fijian territory.
01:20:19Now John Kirwan has plenty of room to move.
01:20:23Getting away from Varma.
01:20:29Well he would have anticipated in an All Black performance
01:20:31that has produced 10 tries that John Kirwan might have scored more than one.
01:20:35The play really hasn't run his way at all.
01:20:37And he had to score his only try out on the left-wing side.
01:20:43I think in the next 10 minutes you might find him creeping in
01:20:46onto that same side again.
01:20:48Rokawailoa gives it to Koumbou.
01:20:51Wild pass across to Tuvala.
01:20:57And that's in to touch.
01:21:00It was kicked from inside the 22.
01:21:07Hardly surprising that things are starting to slow down just a little.
01:21:1010 minutes remaining in the game.
01:21:13The All Blacks are ahead by 64 points tonight.
01:21:24Good take towards the back of the line and again by Alan Witten.
01:21:30Kirk to Fox.
01:21:32Running it back towards his forward support.
01:21:37Once again they're all there.
01:21:38Sean Fitzpatrick has stayed out of it though.
01:21:40He wants to have a little run.
01:21:41David to Alan Witten.
01:21:44Just a body charge really from the Fijians
01:21:46rather than the tackle.
01:21:47The ball in touch.
01:21:52Yes it was actually in touch.
01:21:53Crowder giving Witten a little bit of stick.
01:21:58But he was dead right.
01:22:03I think the crowd might want to see the ball move now.
01:22:05They've conceded that it's a right.
01:22:06Now they want to see some spectacular Sunday afternoon stuff.
01:22:11Another great take towards the back by Wayne Shelford.
01:22:15David Kirk probing.
01:22:16Jones is there.
01:22:17Lovely flick pass.
01:22:19Well lined up here.
01:22:20The All Blacks.
01:22:21Stanley to the 22.
01:22:23Warwick Tud is there in support.
01:22:2520 metres out.
01:22:27Wayne Shelford took it away.
01:22:28The Fijians over offside.
01:22:32He was still having that little look.
01:22:34He wasn't freeing it too fast.
01:22:36He was having a sneaky go.
01:22:39Grant Fox changes the direction of play.
01:22:41Stanley.
01:22:42John Drake is there.
01:22:43Albert Anderson has the go.
01:22:46What a thumping tackle.
01:22:48Albert Anderson went down.
01:22:52And I think it hurt.
01:22:54Boy I bet it did.
01:22:57They should have been putting a few of those in earlier on.
01:22:59That was a massive tackle.
01:23:02There was another staple as we call it.
01:23:04Where you bend in a U around a guy's shoulder.
01:23:07They perpetrated on Warwick Taylor in midfield.
01:23:10When he cut back there too.
01:23:12Too bruising.
01:23:13But really bruising tackles.
01:23:22The man who is now New Zealand's most capped.
01:23:24Second 5'8".
01:23:26Rather surprising though.
01:23:27Wasn't in favour late last season.
01:23:29He was left out of the Tour de France.
01:23:32But he's come back with a vengeance this season.
01:23:34He's got a great work rate.
01:23:36It was one of the reasons why Canterbury always played terribly well in the last 10 minutes too.
01:23:40He works all day.
01:23:49About 8 minutes to go in the game.
01:23:51Loose ball over the line.
01:23:52It'll have to be forced.
01:23:555 metre scrub.
01:24:01The fact that they haven't found only one scrub machine in the whole of Fiji.
01:24:06Has obviously made it difficult for them.
01:24:08As you can see by the way they're scrummaging.
01:24:17Another big shot coming up from the All Blacks.
01:24:21Carried on by Wayne Shelford and Alan Witton.
01:24:23And Alan Witton it is who gets the try.
01:24:31Try number 11.
01:24:38Combination between Wayne Shelford and Alan Witton.
01:24:40In effect Shelford dragged Witton through.
01:24:43And threw him over the line.
01:24:45And Alan Witton has the try.
01:25:01They started tight.
01:25:02New Zealand did early on.
01:25:03They started tight.
01:25:04And he was one of the reasons or the causes of playing it tight.
01:25:08He's played a very good tight game.
01:25:13If Grant Fox can land this conversion it'll equal Alan Hewson's world record of 26 points in a Test match.
01:25:31No, he's hit the post three times today.
01:25:41And Grant Fox is running out of time.
01:25:45He's got 24 points in this Test.
01:25:47And there are six minutes to go.
01:25:50These were the two great goal kickers.
01:25:52They'd be two of the best goal kickers in the world.
01:25:54And Alan Hewson still kicked them terribly well in Wellington.
01:25:56And he would still be one of the best goal kickers in the world.
01:25:59What a do-and-doer.
01:26:03All Blacks will probably open this up one up.
01:26:05Grant Fox.
01:26:07Kerwin is there looking for work.
01:26:09Gallagher.
01:26:10Lined up with Green.
01:26:13Joe Stanley.
01:26:17Strong body charges by the Fijians.
01:26:19Finally taking Stanley to ground.
01:26:22There it is.
01:26:23Fox.
01:26:24Green.
01:26:25Gallagher.
01:26:28Good support from Jones.
01:26:30Gary Whetton.
01:26:34Lost it forward.
01:26:35They'll have to come back.
01:26:39Still grand support again by these Fords.
01:26:42They're very athletic, these New Zealand Fords.
01:26:45They can all run a bit.
01:26:46As you saw there, the lock.
01:26:47Gary Whetton being able to move too.
01:26:50And it's great once you break out.
01:26:51You see these big men running and passing well with the ball too.
01:26:55Another big strum from the All Blacks.
01:26:58Wasn't offside.
01:26:59According to Derek Bevan.
01:27:01Oh, the passers are going everywhere.
01:27:03Kerwin's grabbed it.
01:27:04Taylor.
01:27:05Grant Fox might get a try.
01:27:06This will be the world record.
01:27:08No, he can't do it.
01:27:09And Michael Jones can't hold it either.
01:27:14Both will be upset with that.
01:27:25Three or four minutes remaining in the match.
01:27:2768 points to nine.
01:27:30Wait for the big shove here from the All Blacks.
01:27:33Corrin Dewandua.
01:27:37The man who scored all the points for Fiji this afternoon.
01:27:40With three penalty goals.
01:27:48The sun has re-emerged at Lancaster Park.
01:27:51And it's shining on a very good All Black performance.
01:27:5568 points to nine.
01:27:57Here go the backs again.
01:27:59Joe Stanley.
01:28:00Strong effort from him.
01:28:04Ten metres out from the 22.
01:28:09Gary Whetton has had a good second half.
01:28:13Carried on by his brother Alan Whetton over the 22 they go.
01:28:21Eleven tries scored by the All Blacks.
01:28:24We're in American ball now.
01:28:25We could actually give a little wee mic to Foxy and say I'd stand behind this scrum if we get half a chance.
01:28:30Or we win a tight head and go for drop.
01:28:35Another big scrum from the All Blacks.
01:28:36Nwalu safely away to Rokawai Loa.
01:28:39Once again there's no understanding amongst the Fijian backs.
01:28:41But this time the right winger Tabula has it.
01:28:44And he's got it.
01:28:45And he's got it.
01:28:46And he's got it.
01:28:47And he's got it.
01:28:48And he's got it.
01:28:49And Tabula has a big run.
01:28:50He's fast.
01:28:52Good tackle by David Kirk.
01:28:56All Black forwards back in support.
01:28:58Wayne Shelford it was.
01:29:02Brave little fellow this one.
01:29:03David Kirk.
01:29:04That was a great tackle on the winger.
01:29:15Another opportunity here for the All Black back division.
01:29:17Gallagher's up.
01:29:18Scything through.
01:29:19He'll run Kerwin and Kenny.
01:29:20No Gallagher.
01:29:22Number four for John Gallagher.
01:29:27I don't like those guys doing those shoulder rolls.
01:29:31I didn't score a try like that after watching Simba from Zimbabwe the other day.
01:29:38But he's very quick.
01:29:39That was just another example of Gallagher racing through the middle there.
01:29:42Lovely turn of pace.
01:29:45I felt that classically he should have given it to Kerwin.
01:29:47But when a man scores there's not much he can say.
01:29:54John Kerwin didn't get the pass.
01:29:56John Gallagher scored the try.
01:30:01Grant Fox adds the extra two.
01:30:03And that's the record equaling 26 points.
01:30:06He now shares the record with Alan Hewson.
01:30:14There you have it.
01:30:24A couple of minutes to go in the game.
01:30:26The All Blacks scored 70 against Italy.
01:30:28They've now scored 74.
01:30:30So their highest score in a Test match.
01:30:33That record goes as well.
01:30:34The records are tumbling.
01:30:36Here's the one last effort from the All Blacks.
01:30:38John Kerwin.
01:30:40Across to David Kirk.
01:30:41Just playing with the Fijians now.
01:30:42Gallagher has scored four today.
01:30:44So has Craig Green.
01:30:47Held up again.
01:30:49Johnny Kumbu.
01:30:50Stole the match on the All Blacks.
01:30:52But has been taken back by Alan Whitten.
01:30:57One last rally here from the Fijians.
01:30:59Voodoo.
01:31:01The All Blacks are there involved though.
01:31:04Kerwin comes away with it.
01:31:05John Kerwin.
01:31:07Inside his own 22.
01:31:10Time is almost up on the clock.
01:31:13Taylor.
01:31:14To Green.
01:31:17Support from Taylor again.
01:31:19Alan Whitten.
01:31:21John Kerwin.
01:31:23John Kerwin.
01:31:25John Kerwin.
01:31:27John Kerwin.
01:31:28John Kerwin.
01:31:29Alan Whitten's been lurking on the left wing.
01:31:31Nobody wants to pass to him.
01:31:33The Fijians away again.
01:31:34Nawalu the halfback.
01:31:37Thumping tackle on the big prop forward.
01:31:40Kumbu again with a kick.
01:31:42Gallagher looking into the sun.
01:31:43Took it nicely.
01:31:44Just out from the 22.
01:31:47Everybody having a go in this last minute or two.
01:31:51Grant Fox.
01:31:53Has tidied it all up.
01:32:00Perhaps he may have run.
01:32:01How do you know he's close to that record?
01:32:0912 tries the All Blacks have scored.
01:32:12They scored 12 against Italy.
01:32:15Grant Fox has added 26 points with his boot.
01:32:25Fox.
01:32:27All Black.
01:32:29Backs.
01:32:30Maybe their last chance.
01:32:31Warwick Taylor takes it in.
01:32:3310 metres out from the 22.
01:32:36All very awkward for David Kirk.
01:32:39Chased by Kirian Dromo.
01:32:42Here's a big burst from Varma.
01:32:45Fijians getting very close to their only try of the match.
01:32:49Varma again.
01:32:50And he did.
01:32:53Jorzy Varma.
01:33:00Well it all started from behind the All Blacks scrum.
01:33:02It was very untidy.
01:33:03David Kirk had all sorts of problems.
01:33:06Finally Steve McDowell took it in.
01:33:07But he was dumped.
01:33:09And the initial burst came from the man who finally scored the try.
01:33:11Jorzy Varma.
01:33:13He had good support from half-back Nwalu.
01:33:16It looked as though it had broken down close to the line.
01:33:18But Varma was there again.
01:33:21And he got Fiji's consolation try.
01:33:25Yes.
01:33:26Well it was big, strong running.
01:33:27This is what we've come to expect from him.
01:33:29We only wish we had seen a lot more this afternoon.
01:33:32And he comes back infield here to give it to Varma.
01:33:34And there's no stopping this big man when he starts crunching here.
01:33:38I think discretion is a better part of valour than John Kirwan's part there too.
01:33:50Another one hits the posts.
01:33:5217 metres out from the 22.
01:33:5574 points to 13.
01:33:58And it looks as though there's still time to go.
01:34:00Well even in a hypercritical sense,
01:34:02I think Varma would have to say that this all-black pack,
01:34:04particularly, have made very few mistakes.
01:34:07And the backs have played well too.
01:34:09Particularly Warwick Taylor.
01:34:11He's partied up.
01:34:12He's been a loose forward on his own midfield.
01:34:14He's general to midfield.
01:34:16And he's given it a lot of room when he's tried to get Joe Stanley on the burst
01:34:20by making him run on to the pill.
01:34:25Time up on the clock.
01:34:26The All Blacks 74 to 13 ahead.
01:34:28Taken in by Fitzpatrick.
01:34:32Taylor standing in at first 5'8".
01:34:34Fox was at second 5".
01:34:35Another line-up here for the All Blacks.
01:34:37Geller scything through.
01:34:38Kirwan.
01:34:39Is this the last one for the All Blacks?
01:34:41Support from Craig Green who wants five.
01:34:43Can't get it though.
01:34:45And that's it.
01:34:47An emphatic victory for the All Blacks.
01:34:48Their second inside a week.
01:34:52And that's the final score.
01:34:5474 points to 13.
01:34:5612 tries scored by the All Blacks.
01:34:584 by John Geller.
01:34:594 by Craig Green.
01:35:01And 26 points from the boot of Grant Fox.
01:35:0474 to 13.
01:35:06Well, as you can see from the way the kids ran out there,
01:35:09the All Blacks have certainly reinstated them as national heroes.
01:35:12And one would have to say that they played particularly well.
01:35:15Particularly in that first 10 minutes when it was going to matter psychologically.
01:35:19They really got in and demolished Fiji.
01:35:21And from that time on, they were only going to feed on crumbs.
01:35:24A grand performance.
01:35:26Even though Fiji were weakened by the psyche of realising that all they had to do
01:35:31was wait for this game on Sunday.
01:35:35So will that sort of victory earl benefit New Zealand at all?
01:35:39Yes, it will.
01:35:40Because, again, it keeps brimming with confidence.
01:35:42And they've all had a good run.
01:35:43No one, I thought, other than maybe McDowell, has been hurt.
01:35:46So the attrition hasn't been too great.
01:35:48And that's a big thing when you've got, hopefully, four games for the All Blacks to play
01:35:52if we get through to that final at Auckland.
01:35:54And I think that it will make a big difference in terms of fitness and sharpness.
01:35:59And I thought they looked sharp there today.
01:36:02All sorts of records tumbling this afternoon.
01:36:04At least half a dozen went by the boards.
01:36:06Craig Green equalled a New Zealand record for tries in a Test match
01:36:10that was equalled later by John Gallagher four apiece.
01:36:13They joined Duncan McGregor who scored four against England in 1905.
01:36:18Grant Fox has broken the record for number of conversions.
01:36:22He's equalled Alan Hewson's world record of 26 points.
01:36:24The All Blacks have scored their most points in a Test match.
01:36:27The records really tumble here today.
01:36:30And the All Blacks won by 74 points to 13.
01:36:35And their next match is against Argentina.
01:36:44Yes, I don't think they'll be too downhearted.
01:36:46The great thing about it is that you'll find that, just like Auckland,
01:36:49we beat them by about 68 points before they played Wellington.
01:36:52And we found them terribly tough.
01:36:54A week later, seven changes they made in the team to play Wellington.
01:36:57And I thought we played well as Wellington, but it was very, very hard.
01:37:01And I think next week you'll find that they'll play very well again.
01:37:05OK, let's go onto the stand now.
01:37:06Tony Palmer has David Kirk.
01:37:09Well, David Kirk, very hard to be critical of a side
01:37:11when you've just scored three quarters of a century.
01:37:13But were you happy with the fluency of the backs?
01:37:15Well, I was disappointed with Fiji.
01:37:18I'll say that to start with.
01:37:20I believe their performance lacked fortitude
01:37:22and didn't really do them justice as a side.
01:37:25You don't think that it's justifiable in the context of a pool situation
01:37:29in the World Cup to do what they've done?
01:37:31I understand why they've done it.
01:37:33That's not to say that I think that markedly substandard performance is justified.
01:37:38I hope they beat Italy.
01:37:40They've obviously set themselves to do that.
01:37:41As far as our performance was concerned, we stuck to the task.
01:37:44We made mistakes.
01:37:45We weren't as accurate and as efficient as we could have been.
01:37:48That reflects to some extent the opposition
01:37:50and to some extent our shortcomings.
01:37:52We'll have to address that before the next match.
01:37:54In the first half, you seemed to have absolutely uncluttered control in the set play
01:37:57and certainly in the scrums holding onto it.
01:37:59Was that just looking to set things up
01:38:01or was that just the way you intended to play it?
01:38:03Well, we did want to play a controlled game against Fiji
01:38:05after watching them play Argentina.
01:38:07We knew that if the loose ball was left lying around,
01:38:08they'd be very quick to grab it.
01:38:10So that was certainly a tactic of ours.
01:38:13You seemed to be holding onto it for quite some time.
01:38:15In the scrum?
01:38:16Oh, I didn't notice it markedly.
01:38:18Perhaps it was easier to see from where you were.
01:38:20David Kirk, thank you very much.
01:38:21Congratulations.
01:38:22Thank you.
01:38:23Well done.
01:38:24I'll try and get a word now to Collie Rackelroy, if we can.
01:38:27Collie, is that game, just in the context of a World Cup competition
01:38:32where you only need two wins,
01:38:34was it the intention of Fiji to go in today without worrying too much about a win?
01:38:38Well, we were looking forward for the game against Italy
01:38:42because most of the guys got injured.
01:38:44Also, we want to get all the guys to play a game each
01:38:49so that we can look forward to a bigger team against Italy
01:38:53and hope for the best against the quarterfinals.
01:38:56Is there anything you can take from your team's performance today
01:38:58that gives you heart looking forward to Italy?
01:39:01Oh, yeah.
01:39:02Looking forward for the game against Italy,
01:39:04but I hope the boys, especially coming down to yesterday
01:39:08and having just a light heart in another game today,
01:39:11I think that was really taking the boys up today.
01:39:14I hope we'll have another good team looking forward to the game against Italy.
01:39:18Collie Rackelroy, thank you very much.
