00:00:00Last year Oxford University, a team coached by Alan Jones, who of course is coaching Australia today.
00:00:08Well this is the Irish side today, fielding 14 of the 15 players they used in their opening World Cup match against Wales a fortnight ago.
00:00:15The only change is at number 8, where 23-year-old rookie Neil Francis, who's never played in this position before prior to the World Cup,
00:00:20comes in after a very impressive debut for Ireland against Tonga four days ago.
00:00:25Oxford is a lock for this tour, but a 6'6'' has been chosen as the number 8,
00:00:30in the hope that he can nullify the line-out advantage that the Australians should command in this phase of play.
00:00:35Ireland will be captain again today by Donald Enneaghan.
00:00:38Alan Jones has sprung a couple of surprises in naming his side for this match.
00:00:41Firstly, he has shunted David Campisi from wing to full-back in place of the injured Roger Gould,
00:00:46which is the added effect of giving the Australian back-line a bit more pace and zip.
00:00:51Neither Bourke nor Brigg, the two wingers named for this match, are renowned for their speed.
00:00:54But the big surprise is in the front row, the naming of Cameron Lillicrap,
00:00:57the 24-year-old Brisbane University student who was replaced by top-old Rodriguez, the Argentinian wallaby.
00:01:02And this has come as a major surprise here on Australian rugby.
00:01:06And, of course, Rodriguez has been the cornerstone of the Australian scrum for the last three or four years,
00:01:10but he has slowed down a little in his World Cup matches, and Lillicrap gets his big moment today.
00:01:16Well, unfortunately, the day here in Sydney is very overcast.
00:01:19We've had a lot of rain over the last 36 hours, and the field here at the Concord Oval,
00:01:23although from the high position up here in the camera it may look perfect,
00:01:27I can tell you that it's a very heavy ground out there this afternoon.
00:01:30The ground staff, when they arrived here at 7 o'clock this morning,
00:01:33were amazed at the amount of water that was lying on the ground.
00:01:36Their intention was to cut the grass today in the hope that it would improve the performance of the ground,
00:01:42but there was so much water around that they could not do that.
00:01:44They've been drilling holes all day, trying and mopping the water up,
00:01:47but I'm afraid between the 222s on this side of the ground,
00:01:51the field is expected to cut up very, very quickly.
00:01:54And as a result of the indifferent weather we've had here in Sydney,
00:01:57the crowd here at the Concord Oval today is not as large as had been anticipated.
00:02:01It has a ground capacity of about 20,000 people,
00:02:04but with this stormy weather that's around Sydney and there's a lot of black clouds above us at the moment,
00:02:10the crowd is probably no more than about 10,000 or 15,000 people.
00:02:14A lot of interest in this match here in Australia, and particularly the performance of the Australian team.
00:02:19And with me this afternoon, I have Trevor Allen, the former Wallaby captain.
00:02:23And as we mentioned before, the opinion appears to be largely divided here in Australia about this Wallaby team,
00:02:29but the feeling I get is that it just doesn't seem to have the support that the team had in New Zealand last year
00:02:34or had when it won the Grand Slam.
00:02:36Well, I think basically, Brendan, of course, when they won the Grand Slam
00:02:40and the performance they put on in New Zealand last year was great.
00:02:43And at the moment, they're not firing very well,
00:02:46and I think the Australian public have been a little bit disappointed with them.
00:02:51It's quite a contrast to the overwhelming support the All Blacks are getting in New Zealand,
00:02:55but here in Australia, opinion is divided.
00:02:57In fact, at this Oval here three days ago against Japan,
00:03:00the Australian team was booed and jeered for their indifferent performance.
00:03:03Well, they're getting a better reception today as they come out onto the field.
00:03:06There's Cameron Lillicrap, the new man on the field, Tom Lawton,
00:03:10Nick Barr-Jones, Steve Cutlet, Brett Papworth, Peter Griggs,
00:03:15and the somber face of David Campisi.
00:03:17It's a big day for the Australian fullback
00:03:19who returns to the place where he played against the All Blacks in the second test last year.
00:03:23He had a nightmare of a game down there,
00:03:25and he will be a key player in this Australian side today.
00:03:28But he will be under a lot of pressure,
00:03:30and I'm sure the Irish inside half Paul Dean will be putting the ball high very quickly
00:03:34to test Campisi, a facet of his play that has never been renowned for its strength.
00:03:38No Irish national anthem here today,
00:03:41it will just be the Australian anthem before the match gets underway.
00:03:54And this really is a big test, not only of the character of the Australian team today,
00:03:58but also their confidence, which I imagine has been rocked a little
00:04:01by the stinging criticism that they've taken in the news media.
00:04:05Even this morning in the Sunday Telegraph here,
00:04:07Mark Keller, who writes a rugby column,
00:04:09was very, very strong and caustic in his words about the Wallaby performances in the World Cup.
00:04:15In fact, he's made the comparison, which is interesting,
00:04:17and I'm sure Graham Thorne, if he's listening, will be most intrigued to hear this,
00:04:20that he likens Australian rugby at the moment
00:04:23to the stereotype rugby that British teams played five years ago.
00:04:28Yes, well, look, can I just say one thing, Brendan?
00:04:30This is rather interesting, and I think it will interest the people in New Zealand.
00:04:33The Australian side will not come over to the area
00:04:35where they're supposed to line up for the national anthem,
00:04:38and I think this is indicative of this side really wanting to get together.
00:04:43The officials, I can tell you now, are quite upset about it,
00:04:46because it has been all through the week that the two sides line up,
00:04:49face the stands and the national anthem, or in this case, only the one,
00:04:52and the Australian side basically has refused to come over.
00:04:55So the island side has gone down the other end, as you can see there now,
00:04:58and so they're forming up and getting together again.
00:05:01Personally, as an Australian, I think it's a bit of bad form.
00:05:05They know what was outlaid for them all through this tournament,
00:05:09but that's how I feel that they are going to play this very hard,
00:05:13and as I said in my earlier comments, Australia will have to.
00:05:31§§
00:05:52§§
00:06:03CHEERING
00:06:08And a crowd of about 15,000 people here at the Concord Oval
00:06:12in good voice this afternoon, supporting the Australian team
00:06:15with the national anthem, and they gave them a rousing reception.
00:06:19The Irish team, it's a big day for them,
00:06:21and particularly for this man here, 23-year-old Neil Francis,
00:06:24thrust into the white hot heat of international competition,
00:06:27playing today in only his second international.
00:06:29Paul Dean, something of a surprise in his naming at first 5'8",
00:06:32the feeling was that Tony Ward, because he'd played in the last two matches,
00:06:35and especially now that Campisi was at fullback,
00:06:38that the tactical boot of Tony Ward would in fact wear the number 10 jersey.
00:06:42And the big surprise in the Australian team, 24-year-old Cameron Lillicramp,
00:06:47who's replaced Andrik Rodriguez in the Australian front row.
00:06:51And it's Michael Liner, with the Australians playing from right to left
00:06:54on this very soggy ground here at the Concord Oval,
00:06:57as Hugh McNeill brings play back towards the halfway,
00:07:00and it's on this side of the field where the ground is at its soggiest
00:07:04and that side is at its softest.
00:07:07And there you can see that area between the 5m and the 15m mark,
00:07:11in from touch, which is looking rather barren and rather soft.
00:07:15Nick Barr-Jones at a very late charge on the Australian halfback,
00:07:18that'll be a penalty.
00:07:21Yes, Cutler took that ball very well, or punched that ball well from the line-out.
00:07:26When we watch the replay, watch it closely.
00:07:30It's Barr-Jones.
00:07:32Ooh, two. The second one really was the late one.
00:07:35It was Philip Matthews, the Irish loose forward,
00:07:37that just charged straight into Nick Barr-Jones.
00:07:41And the big, solid Australian halfback,
00:07:43he's probably the biggest halfback here at the World Cup.
00:07:45It's 6ft and nearly 13½ stone,
00:07:48but even for this solid fellow, that was a very, very telling blow.
00:07:53Yes, well, here it comes again, and of course you can see,
00:07:55there's the kick away, and it's really the man up that high
00:07:58that really did the damage to Barr-Jones.
00:08:03But unfortunately for Barr-Jones,
00:08:04it looked as though he might have a severe shoulder injury.
00:08:08Unfortunately, I'd say he's a bit unlucky because it's so early in the game,
00:08:12probably not warmed up,
00:08:13and probably that's one reason why he has really felt it.
00:08:17Well, the day here in Sydney is rather chilly
00:08:19with all this wet weather that's around.
00:08:21It hasn't been as warm as it has been for the last couple of days,
00:08:23and look, Nick Barr-Jones does not look good at all.
00:08:27Yes, and again, when we were speaking in our preview,
00:08:30I suggested that this man could be the big difference
00:08:33to the way the Australian side goes.
00:08:36Well, this is the man that, I guess you could say,
00:08:38is the villain of the piece, Philip Matthews,
00:08:41the Irish loose forward that was completely uncalled for,
00:08:44that charge on Nick Barr-Jones.
00:08:46Perhaps Sir Matthews might claim in his defence
00:08:48that he was trying to charge the kick down,
00:08:49but he's cut his face as well, and he looks very groggy,
00:08:52and I don't think he'll be taking much further part in the match.
00:08:54And Brian Smith, the Australian substitute half-back,
00:08:59quickly looks as if he's going to make an appearance in this match,
00:09:01which is only a minute old.
00:09:03So this is a big blow because Barr-Jones is really the architect
00:09:05behind this Australian team.
00:09:07He certainly is. He's the player that they've depended on so much
00:09:11because he has become a very, very competent half-back.
00:09:15In many ways, he reminds me of some of the real top New Zealand half-backs.
00:09:20He's solid, he's always there, and he's tackling.
00:09:23Unfortunately, I think he does too much tackling,
00:09:25but he's a tough character, and he looks as though he's going on with it.
00:09:28Well, he's going to stay on, but he looks very groggy,
00:09:31and Smith, who looked to be warming up to take his place,
00:09:34has been shunted back to his position on the reserves bench,
00:09:37and so Barr-Jones will continue.
00:09:40But whether he will see out the match must be another question.
00:09:46And he's still not right. He's still indicating to the Australian camp that he...
00:09:54Yes, I think he's looking for a bit of strapping.
00:09:56He doesn't want to leave the field at this stage.
00:10:05And for those of you who may just have joined our telecast,
00:10:08I'm very pleased to have with me this afternoon Trevor Allan,
00:10:11the former Wallaby captain,
00:10:13a man who we know well in New Zealand with his work for ABC Rugby,
00:10:17but today on loan to us at Television New Zealand.
00:10:19Meanwhile, the attention focuses back to Michael Liner.
00:10:25Simple kick for the Queenslander and the Australians,
00:10:28although they've paid a fairly heavy price for that penalty.
00:10:32With the injury to Nick Barr-Jones, they're on the board and leading by 3-0
00:10:35after just one minute of play.
00:10:39Michael Liner, who had kicked 36 points in the World Cup prior to this match,
00:10:43and that will do his confidence the world of good.
00:10:45It's always good to get the first one over.
00:10:52So the Irish, who have been one of the major disappointments here at the World Cup,
00:10:55their form has been rather indifferent throughout the first three matches
00:11:00of this particular tournament, and...
00:11:02David Campisi with his first touch of the ball makes a mistake.
00:11:07Well, that was good thinking on the part of Michael Kiernan.
00:11:09He's tested Campisi right from the kick-off,
00:11:12and the Australian full-back has been found wanting.
00:11:15Yes, he seemed to have the ball covered, but it was only a small knock-on,
00:11:20but knock-on, quite enough of it.
00:11:24Bradley to Dean.
00:11:28Back comes Kiernan, not going to switch back,
00:11:30but he's taken 15 metres out from the Australian line,
00:11:33and the Irish forwards have been penalised, a hand, I think, in that ruck,
00:11:37and already tempers are starting to fray there.
00:11:40It's Bill Campbell and Terry Kingston that started it,
00:11:43and Campbell is still having his say.
00:11:46He has a few words also to his opposite number, Willie Anderson,
00:11:51and it's going to be, I imagine, a fairly willing encounter.
00:12:00So Liner, 15 metres from his own goal line.
00:12:10Well, that was a confident kick by Liner.
00:12:13Liner, they certainly... Oh, here's the fracas that took pace.
00:12:17Now, you might see, I think Campbell came over eventually
00:12:20to try and help out. He's not in the picture yet,
00:12:23and then got involved.
00:12:26The Irish captain, Ronald Linehan,
00:12:30at number two in the line-out.
00:12:33It's the big man on the Australian side, Steve Cutlett,
00:12:36who manages to pull down that untidy ball 15 metres
00:12:40inside the Irish half
00:12:43as the Australians start to roll them all.
00:12:46There's a little Simon Poitivin, number six,
00:12:48probably the smallest fellow on the field, or certainly the smallest forward.
00:12:52He's absolutely dwarfed amongst some of the towering big men
00:12:55on the Australian pack.
00:13:01And Farr Jones on the Irish 10 metre line.
00:13:05And the referee playing advantage to the Australians.
00:13:11And again, it's Farr Jones who's in trouble.
00:13:14I don't really think this man can continue for much longer.
00:13:16He's in pain again,
00:13:19and he must come off shortly.
00:13:20Yes, I think, Brendan, he's a pretty sick boy,
00:13:22and obviously he's going to be quite sensible about this.
00:13:25I think, you know, he has a very bad injury there,
00:13:28one that obviously is not going to allow him to go through this match.
00:13:32And of course, here's the youngster, Smith,
00:13:34who played against Japan the other day and was not, I must say,
00:13:37terribly impressive, but then again,
00:13:40it was an impressive side against Japan.
00:13:43But that's a blow to Australia.
00:13:44This is the worst possible start that Australia could have wished for.
00:13:47Nick Farr Jones, who had only played in the match against England,
00:13:50and this man, Brian Smith,
00:13:52has won the number nine jersey for Australia in their last two matches,
00:13:55but it was thought with the return of Jones today
00:13:57that it would make all the difference to this Australian team.
00:13:59But he's only been on the field for five minutes.
00:14:03Bradley testing Campisi again,
00:14:05and once again his hands let him down.
00:14:08The Irish with the quick throw-in.
00:14:11Fifteen metres inside the Australian half.
00:14:14And the Irish look as if they're willing to play this game at pace.
00:14:19Dean, Brendan Mulling with the kick across the field.
00:14:27Mulling.
00:14:28Sorry, Brendan, but I'd have to say this is it.
00:14:31That was beautiful.
00:14:32He can expect a few more bombs coming his way.
00:14:35They'll test him out now that he appears to not have his confidence.
00:14:41Tom Laughton, the Australian hooker with the throw-in.
00:14:44And Mr Anderson, not happy with those Irish forwards in their line-out,
00:14:48and has awarded a defensive penalty to the Australians
00:14:52just a few metres out from their 22.
00:14:56So I suppose if there's two key men in this Australian back-line,
00:14:59it would be Nick Farr Jones and David Campisi.
00:15:01One has left the field, and the other has looked very tentative.
00:15:04On the two times he's touched the ball, that's not the start
00:15:06that I'm sure Alan Jones would want.
00:15:08Yes, and obviously Campisi was brought into the game
00:15:11by the Irish, and he's got a lot of confidence in him.
00:15:14He's got a lot of confidence in him.
00:15:16He's got a lot of confidence in him.
00:15:17He's got a lot of confidence in him.
00:15:18He's got a lot of confidence in him.
00:15:19He's got a lot of confidence in him.
00:15:20He's got a lot of confidence in him.
00:15:23Yes, and obviously Campisi was brought into the game
00:15:25to bring thrust into this back-line.
00:15:31Plenty of time, of course, for him to settle down.
00:15:37The Irish 22 to the right of the picture.
00:15:39A beautiful take from the new man, Neil Francis.
00:15:43The Irish number 8, just look how high he went.
00:15:52That would give heart to the Irish efforts this afternoon.
00:15:54That superb take by Neil Francis and the release from Derek McGrath
00:15:58and the Irish drive the Australians back to within 5 metres
00:16:02of the halfway line.
00:16:06Tommy Lawton.
00:16:08There's Francis again with the tap this time.
00:16:09That's untidy ball for Bradley.
00:16:23And the Australians who have called for the short line-out.
00:16:45The scrum midway, 22 and halfway.
00:16:47Dean from the safety of his 22.
00:16:52To our New Zealand viewers, I must point out
00:16:54there's practically no breeze here today.
00:16:56The ground appears to be more moist this side than the far side.
00:17:01The ground seems to be holding, so it's capable of producing
00:17:05good open football when they decide to do so.
00:17:09Well, the Irish winning a bit of ball from the line-outs
00:17:11here in the first 10 minutes of this match was coming
00:17:13as something of a surprise.
00:17:14Bradley got lost in the feet of Michael Liner.
00:17:175 metres outside the 22.
00:17:19I think it was knocked forward as well by Liner.
00:17:21And so we'll have the scrum.
00:17:26And if you're wondering what that black strip is
00:17:28that appears on your screen every now and again,
00:17:30it's a steel rope.
00:17:32There's a number of them here on the stand at the Concord Oval
00:17:34which are necessary to keep the roof of the stand on
00:17:37when the wind blows, believe it or not.
00:17:44Paul Dean.
00:17:46I mentioned before, it was something of a surprise
00:17:48to see him in this Irish back line after the Irish
00:17:52had decided to play Tony Ward in the first two,
00:17:54the last two matches.
00:17:57Not renowned for the same degree of tactical sense
00:18:00with his boot as Tony Ward.
00:18:03But he is a very experienced first 5'8",
00:18:06as is this man Michael Liner who will kick for goal again.
00:18:09Yes, and interestingly enough, I've just mentioned the wind.
00:18:13The umbrellas are going up on the far side because
00:18:15the rain is starting to come in a fine drizzle.
00:18:17And with it, the wind seems to have lifted a little
00:18:20and is supporting Australia.
00:18:22That's blowing right to left.
00:18:24And so Liner has just a slight assistance of breeze
00:18:27and a little bit of rain to go with it.
00:18:33Liner, of course, is the player that
00:18:37when he's in goal-kicking form,
00:18:39keeps Australia in the picture in a great number of games.
00:18:42A lot depends on him.
00:18:44He's landed one already, but that was from straight in front.
00:18:46This one a little more difficult.
00:18:53So Michael Liner with a kick of approximately 40 metres.
00:18:57This to make it 6-0.
00:19:09Michael Liner lands his second goal from two attempts
00:19:13and the Australians out to a 6-0 lead.
00:19:16Well, he didn't have a very good day with his boot
00:19:18in the first match against England,
00:19:19where he only landed four out of ten.
00:19:21But since then, he's been right on target
00:19:23and he looks as if he's got his kicking boots on today as well.
00:19:30And the clock showing 10 minutes gone in this first half.
00:19:35And Michael Kiernan, the Irish centre,
00:19:38gets the match going again.
00:19:41And the tap taken down by Kleinemann,
00:19:43midway, 22 and a half away.
00:19:45Smith calling for it.
00:19:47That's the Australian, 22.
00:19:50And the liner's in trouble.
00:19:52But the Irish backs offside.
00:19:54Mullin, the two centres, Mullin and Kiernan.
00:20:00And I must say, the referee, Mr Anderson,
00:20:03had the game the other day, Australia and Japan,
00:20:06and he was fairly strict on that decision
00:20:09of the backs being up too close to the opposition.
00:20:16And so another very tidy kick from Michael Liner,
00:20:19from deep inside his own half.
00:20:20Play to take place now on the Irish 10-metre line.
00:20:33Once again, it's Neil Francis who takes it for Ireland.
00:20:35He couldn't keep his fingers around the ball
00:20:37and it's eventually the Australians that win it.
00:20:39Liner with those Irish backs up very quickly.
00:20:42That's a good kick from Liner.
00:20:43Hugh McNeil goes in on the 22.
00:20:48It's there again for the Australian backs.
00:20:50Campisi's up from fullback.
00:20:52Burke to Campisi.
00:20:56Michael Kiernan has him 15 metres from the Irish 22.
00:20:59And Bradley scampers away with the ball.
00:21:01Good play from Steve Tyman, who was back covering for Campisi.
00:21:08Matt Bradley, who's playing today,
00:21:10in his 18th successive cap for Ireland.
00:21:13Nick Doyle, the Irish coach,
00:21:15and Sid Miller, the other senior member
00:21:18of the Irish management party, here for the World Cup.
00:21:27Some pushing in the line-up by the Australian forwards.
00:21:29Results the penalty, 15 metres in from touch, of course.
00:21:32The Irish to take it on their 10-metre line.
00:21:37One of the problems that Australia have had
00:21:39in their earlier lead-up matches
00:21:41is that their forwards have not been racing as a pack.
00:21:44They're looking a bit tighter, playing like an eight,
00:21:47than they have previously.
00:21:55This is the area, of course, that we're moving into
00:21:57that Australia expect to get plenty of ball
00:22:00in the short line-out they've got.
00:22:04But it's, in fact, Anderson that gets the tap for Ireland.
00:22:07Matthews, midway 22 and halfway.
00:22:09He's lost it forward.
00:22:10The referee playing advantage to the Australians.
00:22:12Burke comes in to tidy the ball up from the Australians.
00:22:15Trevor Ringland and Matt Burke,
00:22:17these two old adversaries from the 1984 match,
00:22:19and some fairly vigorous rucking on Ringland.
00:22:22And the referee has, in fact, penalised Ringland,
00:22:25who was upset at these Australian boots
00:22:27going over the top of him.
00:22:29And he's pointing that out to Mr Anderson.
00:22:31But he had been penalised.
00:22:35Yes, there's little doubt that Ringland
00:22:38was really walked on by Burke.
00:22:41Whether anything occurred before there that the referee saw,
00:22:44or whether it was because he didn't let the ball go.
00:22:49Well, it was very interesting that Burke and Ringland
00:22:52should explode there, because back in that match in 1984,
00:22:56they marked each other at Lansdowne Road in Dublin,
00:22:59and there was a very fiery exchange between the two of them.
00:23:02And obviously the score hasn't been settled.
00:23:08Good kick from line-up.
00:23:16That's the Irish line, just 15 metres away.
00:23:18The first time the Australians have been inside.
00:23:21The Irish 22 in line-up, charged down by Mullen.
00:23:26And McNeil has gone in.
00:23:27Crossan is there as well, just a few metres out from the Irish line.
00:23:33And the Australian forwards are a little ragged to get there.
00:23:35The ball has gone loose, and it's a try!
00:23:41Andy McIntyre.
00:23:44A bad defensive error by the Irish,
00:23:46a couple of metres from their own line,
00:23:48has given Australia the first try of the match.
00:23:50After 15 minutes of play, and the Australians out to a 10-0 lead.
00:23:58It was McNeil that went in first of all,
00:24:00to tidy up the kick from line-up, which was charged down.
00:24:04And the Australian forwards, a little slow to get there.
00:24:08And the ball went loose from that ruck.
00:24:11The pass from Bradley.
00:24:15And McIntyre there to score the try.
00:24:18The kick, as we said, was charged down.
00:24:21Yes, and it would appear, when you look at it,
00:24:23that Ireland should have wrapped this up,
00:24:25should have wrapped it up pretty well,
00:24:27because all of a sudden there was enough of them there,
00:24:29but somewhere along the ball was spilt out and came out wide.
00:24:32Now, to me, there looked as though there was enough,
00:24:34and it should have been an Ireland ball,
00:24:36but someone, there it goes, there's the bad pass,
00:24:38and of course McIntyre up with it.
00:24:50And so Australia away to a good start.
00:24:56And so line-up with the conversion.
00:24:59So the Australians, they haven't looked too impressive,
00:25:02but the fact is on the scoreboard,
00:25:04they're looking most impressive out by 12 to nil.
00:25:07Yes, unfortunately for Ireland,
00:25:10they really haven't started to get together themselves,
00:25:13but Australia's starting to move into a better combination
00:25:17than we've seen, and their forwards were a bit slow,
00:25:20I thought, getting to that ruck,
00:25:22but showing that they're anxious to get there,
00:25:24which should prove a benefit to them as they go through,
00:25:27because it is a good Australian.
00:25:35Michael Kewnham with the restart,
00:25:37and the tap back to Tyneman again,
00:25:39midway, 32 at halfway,
00:25:41and that will do the Australian team a world of good.
00:25:43Their confidence, I'm sure, to be out by 12 points so early in this match.
00:25:51Smith, the replacement, half-back,
00:25:53but he's put it straight into the arms of Keith Crossan.
00:25:57Crossan, who was trying to run the ball into touch,
00:26:00and the liner from inside his own 22.
00:26:02That's a huge punt from Michael Liner.
00:26:04He hasn't found touch.
00:26:05McNeil, outside his 22.
00:26:11Well, that long kick by Liner would give you a fair idea.
00:26:14He is a great punter of the ball,
00:26:16but there is the wind assistance, the one that was returned,
00:26:19and obviously you could see the wind pick it up and drive it out.
00:26:24So, here's Australia on the attack again.
00:26:32Packworth right up with the ball.
00:26:35Chris Crossan just saved for Ireland.
00:26:40Anxious look, understandably, on the face of Mick Doyle,
00:26:43and again the ball is loose in that Irish in goal area.
00:26:54So, another opportunity for the Australian backs,
00:26:57just 5 metres from the Australian line.
00:26:59The control from Tyman at the back.
00:27:01This is a good scrummage from the Australians.
00:27:03Very good scrummaging from the Australians.
00:27:05Over the line it goes, or does it?
00:27:07No, Mr Anderson, who was in very good position to look at that ball.
00:27:10The control just dissipated there,
00:27:12right at the last from the Australians.
00:27:16We'll have another scrum, the Australians going forward.
00:27:20Bradley, the Irish half-back, ready to pounce.
00:27:24And here we go again.
00:27:25Well tried, perfected a little bit at this time, wasn't he?
00:27:28Tyman.
00:27:31He's picked it up to Brian Smith.
00:27:34It's another Australian try.
00:27:39And it's a good try.
00:27:40It's a good try.
00:27:41It's a good try.
00:27:42It's a good try.
00:27:43It's a good try.
00:27:44It's a good try.
00:27:45It's a good try.
00:27:46It's a good try.
00:27:48Well, maybe Alan Jones is going to make his critics eat their words today
00:27:53because look at that scoreline.
00:27:55This is almost a point-a-minute stuff from the Wallabies,
00:27:57out by 16 points to nil,
00:27:59and Brian Smith, the replacement half-back, gets the try.
00:28:02And it came very simply from the scrum,
00:28:05the control from Tyman, out to Smith,
00:28:07and he went over in the tackle 15 metres in from touch.
00:28:10Yes, it was, and as you can see, it was really pretty simple.
00:28:13The defence close in was not there, and Smith did it easily.
00:28:18An injury by the look of it to Bill Campbell,
00:28:23while Liner lines up this kick for goal.
00:28:27So plenty of problems for the Irish team,
00:28:30down by 16 points to nil,
00:28:33and they really have got their backs up against it now,
00:28:37with the match, the first half, a little over halfway.
00:28:43Yes, well, it's not really at halfway.
00:28:45Just looking at the clock there, Brendan,
00:28:46we were showing about 18 minutes,
00:28:48and Australia going very well, doing it easily,
00:28:52and I must admit I'm a bit disappointed in this island side.
00:28:55In fact, in some ways, Trevor, looking at this Irish team,
00:28:58their performance is something like that of the Scots yesterday against the All Blacks.
00:29:01They're just absolutely doing nothing, aren't they?
00:29:03That's exactly right.
00:29:04I watched the game yesterday, and the All Blacks seemed to be in control,
00:29:07and I must say this, and probably New Zealand will not like it,
00:29:11but I thought they did it with ease.
00:29:13And Australia at this stage are not doing anything great,
00:29:18but putting the points on the board and doing it with ease,
00:29:22mainly because yesterday I didn't think Scotland gave the opposition
00:29:26that the All Blacks wanted,
00:29:28and obviously Ireland are not coming back.
00:29:33Here's hoping they do for the sake of the crowd.
00:29:37Michael Liner from 15 metres in from touch.
00:29:44Through what must be the tallest uprights I've ever seen at a rugby ground,
00:29:47and I imagine it must be a psychological boost or advantage
00:29:51for a goal kicker to be kicking at these posts,
00:29:53because the crossbar must look so low when you compare where it sits
00:29:56in relation to the height of the uprights.
00:29:58They are really extraordinary.
00:29:59I don't know whether our ABC girl will give us a good look at them later,
00:30:04but they certainly are very, very tall.
00:30:09So 18 points to nil in favour of Australia as Michael Kiernan restarts
00:30:12two tries in the first 20 minutes of the match to the Australians,
00:30:15and it's this man Liner again.
00:30:17He's already boosted, kicked 10 points from the match.
00:30:2546 points in the World Cup so far for Michael Liner.
00:30:34The Irish with the deep throw.
00:30:37Nicely picked up by Brett Papworth.
00:30:43And that's a very untidy ball, but it is ball,
00:30:45precious ball for the Irish, and Deans kicking again,
00:30:48putting some pressure on Campisi.
00:30:49This time he takes his time and does it right.
00:30:56Trevor Ellum, what are your feelings about this man?
00:30:58Should he be at fullback or should he be on the wing?
00:31:00Well, quite frankly, I've always thought his position is fullback.
00:31:03He has failed a couple of times, but I'm a great believer.
00:31:06You're going to have a player, and you want him as a fullback,
00:31:09play him there for the rest of his time.
00:31:11Just chopping between wing and fullback doesn't do him any good.
00:31:14He needs a position.
00:31:18Bradley in the tackiest part, in the sloppiest part of the ground,
00:31:21and Kiernan got rid of that ball pretty quickly.
00:31:24Knocked forward by Neil Francis,
00:31:28and the Australian put him to the scrap.
00:31:33Ellum not looking a confident side at the moment.
00:31:40Not putting it together at all.
00:31:43They've had problems throughout this World Cup.
00:31:45They haven't been helped by a pretty difficult travelling schedule.
00:31:50Ball rolling towards the corner flag.
00:31:52Ringland manages to keep it in,
00:31:55but Burke wasn't going to allow him to get away.
00:31:59And he's having a super game today,
00:32:01is the 24-year-old Queenslander Michael Liner.
00:32:06I'm sure from the Australian's point of view,
00:32:08nothing could be finer than the sight of Michael Liner in this sort of form.
00:32:11The Australian's again on the Irish line.
00:32:14Line up, Papworth,
00:32:17and a beautiful support play.
00:32:20Matthew Burke.
00:32:21And Matthew Burke gets the try.
00:32:23Burke had come in from the right wing,
00:32:25wonderful understanding with Papworth,
00:32:27and these Australian backs are starting to fire.
00:32:30It's 22 to nil, we've had 22 minutes of play.
00:32:37And again it started just a few metres from the Irish line.
00:32:40This is where the Australian backs today seem at their most lethal.
00:32:43Papworth, the little slip pass through to Burke,
00:32:46and there wasn't a hand laid on him.
00:32:49A very fine try, it really was.
00:32:51Papworth just jinked enough to steady the defence,
00:32:55and then with his hip took the close-in defence,
00:32:58made sure the people were propping for him,
00:33:02and of course Burke, who was a strong player,
00:33:05came on the burst.
00:33:06He didn't have to be strong,
00:33:07because as Brendan said, not a hand put on him.
00:33:11Liner,
00:33:13with his easiest kick today.
00:33:15It's 24 points to nil,
00:33:17and you may have seen the bewildered look on the faces of those Irish players.
00:33:22They really have been stunned by this onslaught from the Australians,
00:33:26who looked so nervous and tentative in the first couple of minutes.
00:33:29They lost their half-back,
00:33:30but it hasn't done any harm to their confidence.
00:33:32And here's the try again.
00:33:34Good pass from Smith, of course.
00:33:36There's just Papworth taking the defence,
00:33:38holding it up, and of course no trouble to Burke.
00:33:48Trevor Ellin has been gainfully employed here as a tactician this afternoon,
00:33:52and he hasn't stopped writing since about the moment that Michael Liner kicked that first penalty.
00:33:57Yes, well, I'd like to see what happens and how it progresses,
00:34:00but I think I'll give up in a moment,
00:34:01because the way Australia's going, they're going to rattle up some high scoring.
00:34:06And so Ringlen, and nothing going right for the Irish.
00:34:09Lost forward by Trevor Ringlen, midway 22 and halfway.
00:34:13And oddly enough, if you look at the historic pattern of matches between these two countries
00:34:18and the 40-year history of matches between Ireland and Australia,
00:34:21they've played three times on Australian soil,
00:34:23and the Irishmen have won all three previous matches,
00:34:25but they don't look like they're going to win today.
00:34:29Australia are ahead by 24 points to nil.
00:34:36As the ball rolls through the net,
00:34:40as the ball rolls through the softest part of the ground,
00:34:44and look at the commitment of Matt Burke.
00:34:49There's little doubt the Australian players are playing as though they've been stung by all the criticism
00:34:54that has been flying around this week.
00:34:59And the referee had spotted an infringement there by the Irish forwards in that line-up,
00:35:04so a free kick to Australia.
00:35:07And the line-up, no doubt, put this ball as high as he can.
00:35:14And he's bombed it well.
00:35:17Bradley, all he can do is just step and a touch.
00:35:23I wonder what's going through the mind of the Irish coach, Mick Lloyd, at the moment.
00:35:28I don't suppose there's much the Irish can do except just put their heads down
00:35:33and try a little harder, because they're just not in the match at the moment.
00:35:39They're getting very little ball.
00:35:41They've won a few line-outs early in the first 10 minutes.
00:35:44Line-up.
00:35:47Here's Australian forwards on the rampage again.
00:35:50It's there for liner. He's got a line-up here.
00:35:52Campisi to Burke, stepped and a touch.
00:35:58Well, they say one of the great attributes of Alan Jones, the Wallaby coach,
00:36:02is his ability to motivate players, and they probably did need plenty of motivation
00:36:06after all the stinging criticism they've taken here for the last week,
00:36:09and it seems to have worked, because these men are playing extremely well at the moment.
00:36:22I think that throw was straight, was it?
00:36:26Australia!
00:36:29It's Australian 4.
00:36:32Five metres from the Irish line.
00:36:39Line-up. Papworth, Brigg, cutting back, taken in the tackle, 10 metres short of the line.
00:36:46And there's plenty of whistle coming from Mr Anderson this afternoon.
00:36:49Australian forwards penalised for going over the top of Peter Grigg once he was tackled.
00:36:56Bradley.
00:37:00That's about the best the Irish can do at the moment.
00:37:04They are under siege.
00:37:09Yes, they're not showing us any form whatsoever, really, of being able to settle down.
00:37:14The forwards can't get any sort of platform whatsoever.
00:37:18The backs have been very tentative.
00:37:20It's going up on the shoulder by the look of it.
00:37:24And again, this referee was harsh the other day on the infringements in the line-out.
00:37:29There was a fair bit of whistle, but the play did go reasonably well.
00:37:34And here you can see the liner is taking one.
00:37:38There is the distance, as you can see.
00:37:42Just outside the 10 metre line.
00:37:45Very slight breeze assistance now.
00:37:47Every time the rain comes up, and it's really only come up once or twice in this game,
00:37:51it seems to bring a little wind with it.
00:37:54But at this moment, I would say, unfortunately, this ground, there's not a flag in sight.
00:38:00But up here you feel as though that it is deathly still.
00:38:04And so the advantage of the wind is that it's not blowing in the direction of the wind.
00:38:09But up here you feel as though that it is deathly still.
00:38:13And so the advantage Australia had is gone, particularly for this kick.
00:38:24Weiner, who's the most prolific points scorer in Australian Test Match history.
00:38:33If he lands this kick, it will send his tally of points over 250 in Test Matches.
00:38:39But he didn't strike it well. The timing wasn't there.
00:38:45And Kiernan clears from underneath his own goalpost, but he hasn't found touch.
00:38:48A lot of unforced errors coming from the Irish side now.
00:38:51Their confidence is obviously gone by the look of it.
00:38:55McNeil, and he does find touch.
00:39:01Yes, it's going to be very difficult for Ireland to get back into the game with the 24 points.
00:39:05I don't know what they're going to do, because Australia are covering too well when they have it.
00:39:15Australian forward penalised for offside, and so Kiernan again will kick for touch.
00:39:22And the Irish hopefully will make one of their rare excursions into the Australian half.
00:39:30Peter Grigg decides to have a bit of a run, coming in from the right wing.
00:39:36Campisi.
00:39:40He's driving the Irish back again.
00:39:51Well, Campisi of course is a very strong punter of the ball.
00:39:55There's no doubt that Alan Jones has put Campisi in there, hoping that he would be able to burst into the back line,
00:40:00because the back line hadn't looked good at all in the run up to this game.
00:40:06But he hasn't needed to do it today.
00:40:14Deane with the restart from the 22, and here's Neil Francis,
00:40:16who's been again probably the most impressive of the Irish forwards today.
00:40:19He's won a few bits of ball from the line out, and a good charge up the middle of the paddock,
00:40:24and has given the Irish something to cheer about.
00:40:26Campisi again with the rolling ball, but he's settled down,
00:40:29and he's playing a lot better now than he did in the first 10 minutes.
00:40:33It's David Campisi who needs one more try to set a world record for the most number of tries in a Test match.
00:40:37He equaled it against Japan the other day.
00:40:41The Irish have brought again to the short three-man line out.
00:40:44There must be a minimum of two players on each side in the short line out.
00:40:49Midway 22 and halfway, and it's worked for the Irish this time.
00:40:53They're going to have a bit of a run.
00:40:54Phil Orr, who's wandering around there in the middle of the back line from the short line out.
00:40:59And they've won it from the secondary phase as well for probably the first time today,
00:41:03but a poorly directed pick from Bradley, giving Campisi plenty of time.
00:41:07He hasn't found his touch.
00:41:11And McNeil putting his players onside.
00:41:13Papworth is underneath it.
00:41:15It's there for the Irish again, just outside the Australian 22,
00:41:18but their forwards are pretty slow to get there.
00:41:22Kiernan kicking for England.
00:41:24Good positional play by David Campisi, and he claimed a fair mark.
00:41:30And the referee has awarded a penalty further back,
00:41:33and I gather it was for interference on the Ireland players coming through.
00:41:39He indicated in running across we were watching Campisi, of course,
00:41:44but when glancing back, the referee was heading in this direction, up to this position.
00:41:49He's penalised Australia for, I would think, some sort of obstruction.
00:41:54That was the indication he gave.
00:41:56It certainly wasn't a late tackle, but obviously there was some obstruction
00:42:00on the player coming through by one of the Australian players.
00:42:04So a chance for Ireland to post their first points.
00:42:09If my memory serves me correct, this is their first shot.
00:42:12It is indeed for Michael Kiernan.
00:42:14It's from a relatively handy angle.
00:42:16The Australians are ahead by 24 to nil.
00:42:19They've had 41 minutes of play.
00:42:25And that sort of sums up the luck that the Irish have had today.
00:42:31Kiernan, from a fairly handy angle, hooks it out to the left,
00:42:36and the Irish remain scoreless.
00:42:39McNeil again with the Gary Allen.
00:42:41Just look how high that is.
00:42:42Campisi, I've never seen him take the high ball like that before,
00:42:46but he did it well.
00:42:49Disproving the theory that the man was perhaps a little gun-shy
00:42:53under the high ball, he took that with courage and with conviction
00:42:57in the face of those Irish forwards.
00:43:01I imagine that might silence a few critics of David Campisi,
00:43:04who claim that he is weak and suspect under that sort of kick.
00:43:08I think Campisi's major problem is that if he gets unsettled,
00:43:13he always seems to be unsettled very early.
00:43:15Once he settles down, he's OK.
00:43:20There's just a listlessness about that Irish shepherd at the moment.
00:43:26Bradley, Dean, but this time the Irish backs are going to have a run.
00:43:29They've got plenty of speed and talent,
00:43:31and this man Ringland is a very good winger.
00:43:38But they just look to be going through the motions out there.
00:43:41Playing now eight minutes away from half-time.
00:43:45Really haven't recovered from that quick-on sort of points
00:43:48in the first 20 minutes by the Australians,
00:43:50which saw them out to a 16-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes.
00:43:54The Irish captain, Donald Linehan.
00:44:05Well taken by Derek McGrath at the back of the line out for Ireland.
00:44:08Bradley, but Campisi, he looks calm and composed.
00:44:12But the Irish got there at the same time this time,
00:44:14but at least he went underneath it.
00:44:16Made a fairly valiant attempt to take it.
00:44:20The ball, I think, would be knocked forward by Campisi,
00:44:22and so the scrum to take place just outside the 22.
00:44:26Meanwhile, there's an Irish player lying prostrate on the ground,
00:44:30back at halfway.
00:44:31He doesn't look very happy either.
00:44:33Let's have a look at David Campisi. He did go underneath it.
00:44:35He didn't shy away from the kick from Bradley,
00:44:39but he knocked it forward.
00:44:42And that's where the scrum will take place.
00:44:44Yes, and of course, the ball bounced away to Burke very neatly,
00:44:48so it really saved the day, and Ireland had no way of
00:44:51taking the lead.
00:44:52So it was a very close game,
00:44:54and it was a very close game,
00:44:56and it was a very close game,
00:44:58so it really saved the day,
00:44:59and Ireland had no way of pursuing the ball on
00:45:02because it didn't get to ground,
00:45:03mainly because of Burke being there.
00:45:05But on the subject of David Campisi,
00:45:08and we must face it that he is a player that I guess
00:45:12people all around the world are talking about,
00:45:14and with the Bledisloe Cup coming up,
00:45:16there's little doubt that the people in New Zealand
00:45:19will be watching the performance of Campisi.
00:45:22Campisi is, as I say, I believe is a very good fullback.
00:45:27He should be left in the position all the time
00:45:30if he's the man to take the job,
00:45:32but switching back and forth between wing and fullback
00:45:35doesn't do him any good whatsoever.
00:45:37So I think Jones has got to make up his mind.
00:45:39He either plays him as a fullback or a winger
00:45:42and go on with it.
00:45:43And this is a sad sight.
00:45:45Neil Francis playing in only his second match for Ireland
00:45:48as leaving the field with an injury.
00:45:50He doesn't look too well at all.
00:45:52After 32 minutes of play,
00:45:54the man that was brought into this match today
00:45:56is Heighty, 6'6", and he's done a pretty good job too
00:45:59in the lineouts, winning most of the clean ball
00:46:01that the Irishman has won so far in the match,
00:46:03but he looks as if he may not take much further part in the match.
00:46:07So the Irish with 14 players.
00:46:09McGrath, hang on to the ball a little long.
00:46:12He lost it forward as well.
00:46:20And Tony Doyle is just waiting for the OK
00:46:23to take his place on the field.
00:46:25The back of the Irish grunt.
00:46:28Francis still being checked by the doctor.
00:46:34Meanwhile, there's been another stoppage for injury.
00:46:38It's time to call Dean, the Irish fly half.
00:46:42So there's casualties all over the field at the moment for the Irish.
00:46:46As Dean looks as if he's OK.
00:46:48I think Dean's might have been a convenient one
00:46:50to see what was going to happen out here on the sideline.
00:46:54And the referee wants the game to go on.
00:46:56Well, this is interesting because he's looked at Francis
00:46:59and said, you're OK, fella, you can continue for a bit longer.
00:47:02So Tony Doyle puts his tracksuit back on,
00:47:06and Francis, still favouring his leg a little,
00:47:10is going to take his place after all at the back of the Irish grunt.
00:47:14He looked a mess when he was walking off the field.
00:47:16He looked as though there was no way he was going to carry on,
00:47:19but he's made a remarkable recovery.
00:47:21The old magic sponge.
00:47:22It's amazing what a bit of cold water does to a rugby player when he's injured.
00:47:26Yes, it's... I didn't have it in my day.
00:47:29Here we go again.
00:47:30Yes, it's all good.
00:47:33But Ireland really are struggling.
00:47:35The clock showing is about six minutes to go to halftime,
00:47:38and they're really batting, dragging, trailing by 24 points.
00:47:49Campisi from inside is 22.
00:47:51Driving the Irish back.
00:48:01The Irish appear, for the moment anyway,
00:48:03to have stemmed the tide of points that was flowing from this Australian side.
00:48:09Still 24 points to nil for the Wallabies.
00:48:11That's the halfway mark.
00:48:12Bradley spotted up by those huge Australian forwards.
00:48:17Over!
00:48:19And they come away with it again, the Irish.
00:48:20Dean.
00:48:22It's not a bad kick either.
00:48:23Campisi has to go in underneath it.
00:48:26That is Irish forwards up inside the 10-metre circle.
00:48:30And Campisi took the ball.
00:48:32And so they have the option,
00:48:33and I think they may have elected to go for the scrum, have they?
00:48:37Yes, Slack has...
00:48:39He ran very quickly to the referee to find out what the decision was,
00:48:43and he very promptly said, I'll have the scrum.
00:48:46So Slack must be trying to see if he can get his backs
00:48:48to get some more points before halftime.
00:48:50Well, it is a very good attacking position,
00:48:52because it's in the middle of the field.
00:48:53And Campisi is up from fullback.
00:48:54Here's his first run.
00:48:55The chase is on.
00:48:56Campisi against three Irishmen.
00:48:57In comes Crossan.
00:48:58He's fast.
00:48:59He's too fast for Campisi.
00:49:01And just as well, it was Crossan that was chasing it.
00:49:03The fastest man on the Irish team.
00:49:06And that was an interesting sprinting duel between Campisi and Crossan,
00:49:10probably the two quickest men on the field.
00:49:12And Crossan was giving Campisi the best part of a metre,
00:49:15but he overtook him, and Mullin came in as well.
00:49:20Well, that was a great burst.
00:49:21A very good burst by the two players.
00:49:23A very exciting race.
00:49:31Line-up.
00:49:32Campisi, who's coming more and more into the game
00:49:34after that tentative start.
00:49:38And it's always an awkward one for a fullback to take.
00:49:40When he's standing right alongside the upright,
00:49:42especially one here, which is the best part of about 70 or 80 feet high.
00:49:46But fortunately for McNeill, the bounce wasn't too awkward.
00:49:51So into the last couple of minutes of the first half
00:49:53here at the Concord Oval on a grey overcast day,
00:49:57on a soft ground,
00:49:58but it hasn't stopped the Australians putting together
00:50:00their best performance so far in the World Cup.
00:50:02They're ahead by 24 to nil.
00:50:03Three tries.
00:50:04And the rest of the points coming from the boot of that man.
00:50:06Line-up.
00:50:08Papworth takes it up to midway 22 and halfway.
00:50:11And the Irish loose forward's just winning a bit more ball
00:50:13from the loose at the moment.
00:50:18Campisi showing he's got quite an educated left boot as well.
00:50:22And McNeill trying to cook something up from the back.
00:50:27Smith going for the ball.
00:50:28He's got it.
00:50:29He's got it.
00:50:30He's got it.
00:50:31He's cooked something up from the back.
00:50:33Smith going underneath it.
00:50:36He lost it forward.
00:50:39And certainly the Irish back row has been one of their weaknesses
00:50:43here in the World Cup
00:50:44and they clearly have missed the services of Nigel Carr.
00:50:50In a tournament which has been dominated by some quite magnificent
00:50:53back row performances, the Irish have been overshadowed here
00:50:56and it's perhaps not surprising that they find themselves
00:50:58on the outer of this World Cup.
00:51:02Point.
00:51:05Good play by Smith as he had that kick covered.
00:51:13Still unhappy about something there.
00:51:15I think he felt that Smith should have released the ball
00:51:17a little quicker than he did.
00:51:20We have seen players penalised for that in this World Cup
00:51:22by hanging onto the ball after it has gone into touch
00:51:24and depriving opposition the chance of a quick throw-in.
00:51:31And again those Irish forwards are pretty loose
00:51:33but the ball is there for them.
00:51:34McGrath coming in at first 5'8".
00:51:36Full speed.
00:51:38And Dean with Ringland.
00:51:39Now there's a little bit of room here for Ringland
00:51:41but those orange jerseys swarm him towards the touchline.
00:51:50Ball is still in play.
00:51:52Tying him in a couple of metres from his own line.
00:51:56And the Irish forwards have been penalised
00:51:58in particular Terry Kingston.
00:52:02Going in over the top there.
00:52:04And the Australians to their relief receive a penalty
00:52:07just a couple of metres from their corner flag.
00:52:11It was on that last move Ireland I thought took the wrong option.
00:52:14They came round the blind side and
00:52:19the attacking players on the blind side
00:52:22suddenly found a wall of orange jerseys.
00:52:28Bradley waiting underneath it
00:52:30with some timely support from Philip Matthews.
00:52:3210 metres outside the Australian 22.
00:52:37And Bradley and that was a line-up of green jerseys here.
00:52:39Dean.
00:52:40Oh but a poor pass from Dean.
00:52:43And through goes Campisi.
00:52:45Now Campisi, can he control it?
00:52:47Here goes Crossan giving him the chase again.
00:52:50And what does Mr Anderson say?
00:52:52No try.
00:52:53And again it was Keith Crossan
00:52:55that just nipped, nipped literally
00:52:58Campisi in the bud there right at the try line.
00:53:01And he can't believe it, the despair.
00:53:03Look at this, there was no one in front of him at this point
00:53:06and again Crossan just flew in from the wing
00:53:08flew in, the ball drifted away a little from Campisi
00:53:11he had to come in on the angle
00:53:13and that just slowed him up enough to allow Crossan to get there
00:53:16and clear it away.
00:53:17And that is half time here at the Concord Oval
00:53:19so the Wallabies at last
00:53:21have shed the shackles of mediocrity
00:53:23which had marked their first round performances.
00:53:25They've hit form here with a vengeance
00:53:27against the hapless Irish.
00:53:28Three first half tries
00:53:30the first coming Gwendy McIntyre
00:53:32the second of the replacement halfback Smith
00:53:34and then Burke scored the third try.
00:53:36And this man here, David Campisi
00:53:37who has looked very, very lethal in the last ten minutes
00:53:40he's enjoying himself out there now
00:53:42and Trevor Allen, as a former Wallaby captain
00:53:44you would be breathing a lot better now than you were before the match.
00:53:47Certainly, there's no doubt about it
00:53:49and full credit to the Australian side
00:53:51as we've said earlier, without repeating
00:53:53just to say that they came under a great deal of criticism
00:53:56they jumped pretty well
00:53:57they had a few hiccups in the early part of the game
00:53:59overcame the problem
00:54:00and have got right on top of Ireland
00:54:02and they've got on top basically
00:54:04because the Fords have taken control
00:54:06their backs have not played the flippant football
00:54:08that I suggested they played against Japan
00:54:11they're looking more like an Australian back line
00:54:13and of course Campisi is adding that little bit of zest to them.
00:54:17So that's how we see it here at half time at the Concord Oval
00:54:19three first half tries have been the principal reason
00:54:22why the Australians are leading the Irish
00:54:24by 24 points to nil at the break.
00:54:27And we'll return to Brendan Telfer and Trevor Allen
00:54:30at the Concord Oval when the second half begins.
00:54:32Well Matty Blackburn, I was told by the Irish management
00:54:35before this World Cup started
00:54:37that this particular Irish back line
00:54:39was probably the best of all time in Irish history
00:54:43I would hate to see their worst.
00:54:45So would I.
00:54:46One can be quite scathing about the approach
00:54:48that Ireland are taking to this match
00:54:51they've been completely negative
00:54:53in anything that they've been doing.
00:54:55The only one occasion that I thought
00:54:56that they could have done something about it
00:54:58was a crawl pass to Michael Kernan
00:55:01and as a result their move broke down.
00:55:04They'll need a miracle to come out of this.
00:55:08I'm looking to chase 50 more.
00:55:11Heavens above.
00:55:12Bernie Fraser is also with me.
00:55:14The Irish team, another bad factor of their play
00:55:17is their almost total lack of support play isn't it?
00:55:20Yes.
00:55:21I think the biggest problem is
00:55:22they haven't got a loose loosey
00:55:24and the time that the ball does come out
00:55:27and the Irish try to do something with it
00:55:30and when it breaks down
00:55:32there's just no Irish forward within Cooey
00:55:34and from there the Australians just launch back onto attack
00:55:37and the Irishmen, they're getting the ball
00:55:40in very good positions at times
00:55:42but they just don't know what to do with it
00:55:44and I think the fullback in the Irish team
00:55:49is very similar to the Fijian fullback
00:55:50and all they want to do is kick it
00:55:52and I think that the Irishmen
00:55:54have really got to take the game to the Australians
00:55:56in the backs and just run hard and straight
00:55:58and see what comes about after that
00:56:00but they're just not doing it.
00:56:02Well the Irish team even at the half time break
00:56:04appear to have split into two camps.
00:56:06There's no sense of unity there.
00:56:07Donald Lenehan was trying to instill some cohesion
00:56:11into his back line
00:56:12but really for these Irish supporters
00:56:14it's all bad news.
00:56:16Australia 24, Ireland nil at the break.
00:56:19What do you think of the Australian effort Bernie?
00:56:21They've got 24 points on the board
00:56:23and against an Irish team which isn't playing well
00:56:25how well are Australia playing?
00:56:27Well for a team to be playing badly
00:56:30and score that many points
00:56:32they can't really be too bad.
00:56:35They seem as if they're a wee bit disjointed at times
00:56:41but I don't know whether it's the fact
00:56:45that there's so much pressure on them
00:56:47outside of rugby
00:56:49and they seem to be going alright
00:56:53but I still don't think we've seen the Australian side
00:56:55of say even two years ago
00:56:57so if they hit these traps
00:56:59they can play a lot better than that.
00:57:02Bernie Fraser and Matty Blackburn
00:57:04thank you for those half time comments.
00:57:06It's 24 points to nil to Australia over Ireland
00:57:08in this Rugby World Cup quarter final.
00:57:10Donald Lenehan with a lot of work in front of him
00:57:13in the second half if he's to get back into the match.
00:57:15We'll return to Brendan Telfer and Trevor Allen
00:57:17in just a moment.
00:57:20Rugby World Cup action continues
00:57:22with live coverage presented in association
00:57:24with National Mutual.
00:57:28I tell you what, that crosses fast.
00:57:31Play about to resume here at the Concord Oval
00:57:33in the second half of this quarter final match
00:57:35between Ireland who will play from right to left
00:57:37in the second half
00:57:39and Michael Keenan to restart play
00:57:41so the Irish have 14 minutes left
00:57:44to arrest their dwindling hopes in this World Cup
00:57:46down by 24 points to nil.
00:57:48They face a very difficult job
00:57:51to get back into this World Cup
00:57:53against an Australian side that at last
00:57:55is starting to fire in this World Cup
00:57:57and maybe what Alan Jones said to me
00:57:59during the week is right
00:58:00that he claims that one or two of the fancy teams
00:58:02in this World Cup have peaked too early
00:58:04they haven't paced themselves right.
00:58:08And he feels the Australian team
00:58:10have got themselves into the right momentum
00:58:12just shifting it up a gear with each match
00:58:14and that essentially is what has happened
00:58:16with this Wallaby team.
00:58:18They have improved little by little in each match
00:58:20and today they've taken a quantum leap in improvement
00:58:23and are well on their way to the semi-finals.
00:58:31The old adage that the Irish play well
00:58:33and they are the underdogs
00:58:35well this is the time for them to prove
00:58:37the worth of that saying
00:58:38because they are well and truly the underdogs at the moment
00:58:40as Liner takes the tap kick
00:58:42pushing it down the open side of the paddock
00:58:44Trevor Ringland is there
00:58:46but he left it for Hugo McNeil
00:58:48and he's testing Campisi
00:58:50but Campisi really hasn't put a foot wrong
00:58:52since he fumbled a couple of balls
00:58:54in the first couple of minutes
00:58:56Crossan covering for McNeil
00:58:59on halfway
00:59:01and the ball slipped into the arms of Steve Cutler
00:59:03midway 22 and halfway
00:59:05inside the Australian half
00:59:10and Mr Anderson wisely decides
00:59:12it's time to call for the scrum
00:59:14and what a difficult decision for the Irish captain
00:59:17just how to play this second half
00:59:19the only thing of course he can do
00:59:21is plan to perhaps get more possession
00:59:23and move his backs
00:59:25who so far have proved to me
00:59:27to be a lot slower than the Australians
00:59:29The Irish backs were highly regarded
00:59:31when they came down this part of the world
00:59:33for the World Cup but they've shown
00:59:35very little of their skills in this tournament
00:59:37and especially today
00:59:40Miner for Campisi
00:59:42and the interesting feature
00:59:44about this Ireland backline
00:59:46is that it's exactly the same backline
00:59:48they used in the match against Wales
00:59:50which was exactly the same seven backs
00:59:52they used for every one of their
00:59:544-5 Nations Championship matches this year
00:59:56so they know their play well
00:59:58they know each other's play well
01:00:00this in essence is the sixth
01:00:02major championship match this year
01:00:04they've played together
01:00:06all seven of them
01:00:08in the past which was designed
01:00:10to find Mullin and miss out Koenig
01:00:30We just have a slight problem with our
01:00:32Australian commentary circuit for the moment
01:00:35It appears as if we have
01:00:37another injury break
01:00:39and the Irish halfback Michael Bradley
01:00:41being attended to by the referee
01:00:43Brian Anderson of Scotland
01:00:48Pat on the head
01:00:50for Michael Bradley
01:00:57The line-out to form
01:00:59that's the 10m mark in the Australian half
01:01:0524 points to nil
01:01:07to Australia
01:01:09Smith to Liner
01:01:13Bradley waiting back for
01:01:15Ireland on the halfway line
01:01:17and it appears we have our commentators back
01:01:19let's go back to Brendan Telfer and Trevor Allen
01:01:23You've missed a very little while you've been away
01:01:25there's been an injury break to
01:01:27Matt Bradley and from the line-out
01:01:29a high up and under from Michael Liner
01:01:31the Australian loose forwards have caught offside
01:01:33and Koenig with a penalty
01:01:35and I think he's going to kick for goal right on halfway
01:01:37so this is a big kick for Michael Koenig
01:01:39all of 50m and more
01:01:41he's only had one shot at goal
01:01:43so that's another interesting indication
01:01:45to the Australian performance
01:01:47a very disciplined performance in the first half
01:01:49Koenig was only able to kick for goal once
01:01:51from a penalty
01:01:53and he missed with that
01:01:55and earlier we talked about the victories
01:01:57that Ireland have had against Australia
01:01:59particularly in this country
01:02:01and what really destroyed us
01:02:03several years back
01:02:05was that goal kicker Ollie Campbell
01:02:07he really was a thorn in the Australian side
01:02:09in those days
01:02:17Not a bad looking kick from Koenig
01:02:19just dropping a couple of metres under the crossbar
01:02:21from 50 odd metres out
01:02:23so that's two misses nonetheless
01:02:25for Michael Koenig today
01:02:27the nephew of the great Tom Koenig of course
01:02:32and Michael Lynott a restart
01:02:34on the Australian 22
01:02:36no change to the half time score
01:02:38the Australians are hit by 24 points to nil
01:02:40they scored that 24th point in the 25th minute
01:02:42of the first half
01:02:44so it was a point a minute stuff
01:02:46for the first 25 minutes
01:02:48but nothing since then
01:02:52and Lynott testing Ringland again
01:02:54and he's not getting away from Matthew Burke
01:02:56this afternoon
01:03:02Australian player injured
01:03:04back
01:03:06towards their quarter
01:03:08looks like one of their big forwards
01:03:10who's taken a blow
01:03:12and so we have another stoppage for injury
01:03:14and I think it's Steve Cutler
01:03:16who's taken a cut to his nose
01:03:18and it doesn't look too good either
01:03:20but he's going to resume his place in the line out
01:03:22that might have been the incident there
01:03:24one of the Irishmen kicked at the ball
01:03:26and I would say he definitely kicked at the ball
01:03:28and he just clipped Cutler
01:03:32bit of a mess
01:03:34but I would say quite accidental
01:03:42Australia again with a short line out
01:03:44six man line out this time
01:03:46the Irishman forwards him
01:03:48very quickly on Smith
01:03:50and they've won it this time
01:03:54and Dean testing Campisi
01:03:56but it's far too deep
01:03:58he's got all afternoon to line that one up
01:04:02maybe the Irish might have been better
01:04:04to have played Tony Ward this afternoon
01:04:06because really Dean has not
01:04:08tested Campisi at all
01:04:12and I must admit I don't think Dean has been very
01:04:14smooth in his movements
01:04:16from the 5-8 position
01:04:18he has slowed up the midfield attack
01:04:20Alan Jones who looks a little agitated
01:04:22by something
01:04:25up out of his seat having a word to one of the reserves
01:04:27but play continues
01:04:31as Burt takes the ball into touch
01:04:33looking like 22 and half way
01:04:35he's having a word there to Roger Gould
01:04:37who was not available for this match because of injury
01:04:39and it's in fact Campisi who's replacing him
01:04:41of course at fullback
01:04:43and Gould and Jones
01:04:45have left the grandstand
01:04:49well they've gone for a little chat on the landing
01:04:51just down in front of us away from the rest of the Australian team
01:04:53while the Irish backs decide to have a run
01:04:55Kiernan
01:04:57Crossan
01:04:59Ryan by Hugo McNeil
01:05:01and he knocked it forward as well
01:05:03it's very difficult to assess
01:05:05what the conference was about
01:05:07but I would not be surprised if he thinks that
01:05:09maybe Cutler shouldn't be out there
01:05:11with this bad gas that he's got
01:05:19Campisi
01:05:21but again this time McNeil with plenty of time
01:05:23we've seen that kick a few times today
01:05:25from Hugo McNeil but that was a little astray
01:05:27it wasn't meaning to find touch of course
01:05:29because he took it from outside his 22
01:05:31and it skewed off the side of his boot
01:05:33and a touch on the full
01:05:35so a rare mistake from the reliable Irish fullback
01:05:37steady as a rock usually, Hugo McNeil
01:05:41difficult one again for Smith
01:05:43tap back
01:05:47yes Cutler got a hand to that one
01:05:49not neatly enough and of course it made it very difficult
01:05:51for this little halfback
01:05:53now what can the Australian backs cook up here
01:05:55they're going wide
01:05:57outside of Grigg but they're going the short side
01:05:59and Grigg trying to get inside
01:06:01his opposite number crossing
01:06:03Peter Grigg
01:06:05who's not as fast as he was a few years ago
01:06:07but he's been one of the informed backs in the Australian team
01:06:09in this World Cup so far
01:06:11it was a bit of a dilemma
01:06:13for Alan Jones with
01:06:15Burke, Campisi and Grigg all in pretty good form
01:06:17and the injury to Roger Gould
01:06:19in some ways relieved him of
01:06:21what might have been a difficult choice
01:06:23the wind bursts this afternoon
01:06:25it's there again for the Australian backs
01:06:27slack, Grigg coming in from the right wing
01:06:31the referee playing advantage
01:06:33for the knock on from Grigg
01:06:35but there was none to the Irish
01:06:37the Australian backs just looked a little casual
01:06:39on that occasion as they moved the ball
01:06:41there was a big line up there
01:06:43but they got very bunched, very close together
01:06:45when there was a lot of room free further out
01:06:47they were standing a bit too flat
01:06:49for what they were attempting to do
01:06:51the ball is straight across the field
01:06:53Grigg limping back
01:06:57I suppose you couldn't blame the Australians
01:06:59if they are suffering a little from
01:07:01over confidence at the moment
01:07:03they are so far ahead on the scoreboard
01:07:05that they shouldn't lose this match
01:07:07and they are playing well
01:07:13Bradley
01:07:15and Campisi
01:07:17he's about 30 metres from the Irish line
01:07:19very high, good kick from Campisi
01:07:21good kick
01:07:23well taken by Matthews, a few metres out
01:07:25from his own line
01:07:33it's a strange thing
01:07:35about Australian sides when they get a heavy lead
01:07:37like this 24-0
01:07:39they are inclined
01:07:41and always have
01:07:43inclined to let the pressure come off
01:07:45and it is a bad failing
01:07:47here's the kick
01:07:49and here is Campisi going up
01:07:51just misjudged it, almost got it
01:07:53I would say he did get it
01:07:55but it's been plucked from him
01:07:57although it would believe
01:07:59very near thing
01:08:05so a big scrum here for the Irish
01:08:07and a pretty big one too for the Australians
01:08:09they are out scrummaging the Irish this afternoon
01:08:11look at this stuff
01:08:13the Irish in all sorts of trouble
01:08:15yes that was a good push
01:08:17that was a long way out
01:08:19boy that Australian scrum
01:08:21just sent those Irishmen back so quickly
01:08:23they nearly tripped over themselves
01:08:25going back so quickly
01:08:33what does Mr Anderson say
01:08:35the note that the Irish
01:08:37charged too early, that the liner hadn't
01:08:39taken the kick
01:08:41it was a bit surprising, whether they thought
01:08:43he just tapped it
01:08:45he started to move
01:08:47it's what you call a casual dummy with the feet
01:08:49but he hadn't kicked it
01:08:51no he hadn't
01:08:53so now they get a penalty out of it
01:08:55that's very tricky
01:08:57so a little bit of slight of hand or slight of feet
01:08:59there from Michael Liner
01:09:01has hoodwinked the Irishmen
01:09:03and Liner will now kick for goal
01:09:07here's the big push
01:09:09and it was a big push by the Australian pack
01:09:11and Ireland still going back
01:09:17here's the
01:09:19kick coming up
01:09:21well within Liner's range of course
01:09:23he's kicked two penalties
01:09:25and he's converted three
01:09:27three tries
01:09:33248 points
01:09:3518 and a half
01:09:37this is his 19th test match
01:09:39he's got a strike rate that compares rather favourably
01:09:41with Grant Fox
01:09:43at test match level
01:09:49it's the angle for Michael Liner
01:09:59first points of the second half, it's taken the Australian
01:10:0116 minutes in this spell to add to
01:10:03their half time tally and they've extended
01:10:05that lead to 27 points to nil
01:10:09and that's
01:10:1115 points today
01:10:13for Michael Liner
01:10:15he's kicking very well
01:10:17as Liner
01:10:21just a slight correction for that time
01:10:23I'm having difficulty reading this most unusual
01:10:25looking clock they have here at
01:10:27Concord Oval which is quite different from the ones we
01:10:29see on rugby grounds in New Zealand
01:10:31and in fact there's not 15 minutes
01:10:33just 10 minutes
01:10:35the 10 minutes is where the
01:10:3715 minutes is and can I suggest
01:10:39that you're not Robinson Crusoe that's made
01:10:41that error Brendan
01:10:43you look at it and you think it's
01:10:45quarter of an hour gone it's not it's 10
01:10:47minutes
01:10:49so it looks as if
01:10:51Francis is in fact
01:10:53coming off as a result of that injury that he's
01:10:55sustained earlier in the spell
01:10:57and Tony Doyle
01:10:59has come on and taken his place
01:11:07so Tony Doyle
01:11:09gets his first taste of World Cup rugby
01:11:11he didn't play in any of the first round matches but
01:11:13coming on with 30 minutes of the match to go to
01:11:15replace Anil Francis
01:11:17who has to leave the field and only his
01:11:19second cap for Ireland
01:11:21and the grim faces on the
01:11:23iris bench
01:11:33and we will just
01:11:35confirm with our ABC colleagues about
01:11:37the replacement because it may well be
01:11:39Brian Spillane who in fact is the
01:11:41recognised number 8 but the
01:11:43reserve numbers here indicate that number 18 is
01:11:45Tony Doyle but I suspect it is in fact Spillane
01:11:47that's come on
01:11:49meanwhile play continues
01:11:51Gampisi right on his line
01:11:53and he's
01:11:55called for the fair catch
01:11:59Tom is certainly slipping
01:12:01away from Ireland
01:12:03there's plenty of
01:12:05time to go but there's no way
01:12:07they're going to catch Australia unless Australia really
01:12:09laps
01:12:15that was a bit of a lapse in defence
01:12:17good strong running by Trevor Ringland
01:12:19down to within 15 metres of the Australian line
01:12:21it's there
01:12:27and as I suspected it is in fact Spillane
01:12:29so the iris should have played a few tricks
01:12:31some of us are putting up their numbers
01:12:33there's Mullen and Kiernan not wearing their numbers
01:12:35if they
01:12:37were told they were going to wear
01:12:39in the programme and the same with Spillane
01:12:41who in fact is wearing number 18
01:12:47there he is at number 7 in the line out
01:12:49the recognised number 8 in this
01:12:53iris pack
01:12:55with Derek McGrath behind him at the back of the line out
01:13:01there's Australian loose forwards
01:13:03up very quickly on the iris as they
01:13:05release it as far as Mullen but he doesn't get
01:13:07very far, inside the
01:13:09iris half is Bradley kicking for the open
01:13:11side, charged down by Brian
01:13:13Smith and Bradley again, scampers away
01:13:15with the ball, there's a line up here but it's intercepted by
01:13:17Slack but he had to
01:13:19wind himself up and the defence was able to pull him
01:13:21in, line out
01:13:23the play just a little scrappy
01:13:25at the moment
01:13:27there's a big gap here between Slack
01:13:29and Campisi and he's chipping it
01:13:31but he might have chipped it a bit too deep
01:13:35yes a bit wide, a bit too strong from
01:13:37Campisi, interesting to note
01:13:39Brendan mentioned the back rails of Australia
01:13:41really going very well and getting
01:13:43up quickly and I'd have to say that
01:13:45that's one of the problems that Dean is having
01:13:47Miller in particular for Australia
01:13:49number 7 at the back of the line out
01:13:51is really giving him a tough time
01:13:53Alan Jones
01:13:55penciling in
01:13:57at the moment
01:13:59never seems to rest yet
01:14:07Dean with a bit more
01:14:09room this time as he's approached
01:14:11by a line up but he gets his kick away
01:14:13that's about
01:14:15the best kick we've seen today from the boot of
01:14:17Paul Dean, this very experienced
01:14:19iris fly half, he's playing today
01:14:21in his 21st cap for Ireland
01:14:23been a regular member in recent years, first played
01:14:25for Ireland back in
01:14:271981
01:14:37and that is not a pretty sight from the face
01:14:39of Steve Cutler but he's continuing
01:14:41pushing I think in the line out
01:14:43there from
01:14:45Des Fitzgerald
01:14:47the Irish tight head prop
01:14:49and the Australians with a defensive penalty
01:14:55maybe the Australians are just comfortable
01:14:57happy to sit on this lead
01:14:59knowing that they've got themselves a berth in the
01:15:01semifinals next week and they
01:15:03don't want to suffer too many injuries
01:15:05or any more problems
01:15:07they've already lost Farr Jones
01:15:09one of their key players
01:15:15Dean
01:15:17Crossan, first chance for Keith Crossan this afternoon
01:15:19just a tiny slip of a man
01:15:21a rather frail looking figure
01:15:23just a shade over 11 stone
01:15:25but he is quick
01:15:29Kingston on the 22
01:15:31Australia again with it to the
01:15:33six man line out
01:15:41ball again for Dean
01:15:43but there's no way through a wall
01:15:45of yellow jerseys there
01:15:47but up offside
01:15:49those Australian players
01:15:51it was Tommy Lawton who was offside
01:15:53and a chance here for Kiernan to put
01:15:55Ireland's first points on the board
01:15:57and yes he will kick for goal his third shot
01:15:59this afternoon
01:16:03I'm sure Ireland would dearly love to get
01:16:05something on the board
01:16:07but they really
01:16:09have to be careful
01:16:11they seem to have lost all heart now
01:16:13yesterday I thought that the All Blacks
01:16:15were in control all the time
01:16:17never really greatly troubled
01:16:19as obviously Australia have been today
01:16:21I must say here in Sydney
01:16:23we expected a much closer game
01:16:25than we're watching now
01:16:31I must say here in Sydney
01:16:33we expected a much closer game
01:16:35than we're watching now
01:16:4150 metres in from touch
01:16:43at last raises the flags
01:16:45so a good hearty cheer
01:16:47for the Irishmen from quite a large
01:16:49number of Irish supporters here in the crowd
01:16:53and it's taken them to
01:16:5518 minutes into the second spell of this
01:16:57match, 58 minutes of rugby before they've
01:16:59been able to post any points
01:17:01but still they're an awful long way behind
01:17:03and there's not much time left
01:17:05but at last the Irish flags
01:17:07have something to flutter for
01:17:09and who knows, maybe it will put a bit of
01:17:11heart into these Irish bellies
01:17:13which have looked a little listless
01:17:15since that onslaught from the Australians
01:17:17in the first half
01:17:27Campisi looking for
01:17:29a quick throw in
01:17:31not enough players
01:17:33back and in position for it
01:17:39It's two Australians, Cutler and Campbell
01:17:41those two huge big men in the middle
01:17:43of the Australian line-up, like muscular totem poles
01:17:45they tower above everybody else
01:17:49but the Irish forwards with a little more
01:17:51vigour and a little more zeal about their play
01:17:53over the last 10 minutes and now
01:17:55winning a little more ball as well
01:17:59Greg the ball slips away from him, cross in
01:18:01but the whistle had gone for the earlier infringement
01:18:03and yes I can't help but feel that maybe
01:18:05the Australians have just gone off the boil a bit
01:18:07the Irish forwards are getting back into this match
01:18:09yes it's a problem
01:18:11it really is a problem, but then again
01:18:13as you mentioned Brendan, maybe they've
01:18:15suggested we've got this wrapped up
01:18:17no more injuries, just play the game out reasonably well
01:18:23Campisi, you can tell
01:18:25just by looking at this man when he's confident
01:18:27there's a balance about the way he moves around the paddock
01:18:29and that's what he's exuding at the moment
01:18:33when he has that confidence
01:18:35he doesn't seem to rush anything
01:18:37at times I think he's very slow moving to the ball
01:18:39but obviously he has it covered
01:18:41that's when he has the confidence
01:18:43look at these two big men
01:18:45Cameron Lillicrap at the front of the line-out
01:18:47Philip Matthews
01:18:55not often you see a flanker at number 2
01:18:57in the line-out, but that's where
01:18:59Philip Matthews was taking his position
01:19:05in the face of Matt Bradley
01:19:07who's had a very tough ride behind that Irish pack
01:19:09this afternoon
01:19:13Andy McIntyre, the man who scored the first try in the match
01:19:19the Irish forwards have been penalised
01:19:21for going in over the top after the Australian
01:19:23player had been tackled
01:19:25and this is kicker ball for Michael Liner
01:19:27but he might have to withstand a chorus of
01:19:29jeers and
01:19:31boos I would imagine if he kicks for goal
01:19:33because I think the crowd here want to see these Australian
01:19:35backs run
01:19:37I think that, well it's difficult to say
01:19:39what mood they are in
01:19:41and what slack is going to suggest
01:19:43to Liner, but don't be surprised
01:19:45if he puts one high
01:19:47because I
01:19:49think that in a few matches, well here's the replay
01:19:51there now of that line-out
01:19:53which shows the Irish pack
01:19:55coming through, getting to the ball
01:19:57there's the penalty
01:19:59Brian Spillane that was penalised at number 18
01:20:01and Liner has
01:20:03heeded the wishes of the crowd and he's put the ball
01:20:05high in the air from 40 metres out
01:20:07and the ball has gone loose on the
01:20:0922
01:20:11and a hand in that ruck by an Irish forward
01:20:13Derek McGrath trying to push the ball back
01:20:15but didn't escape the attention of his donors
01:20:17and the Australians with the quick tap
01:20:19Liner running hard, Brigg
01:20:21Campisi, is this the world record
01:20:23he was only a metre away from it
01:20:31and this time it's an Australian forward
01:20:33that has been penalised, but he's a real
01:20:35disciplinarian with the whistle, is
01:20:37Mr Anderson
01:20:44That was a strange decision there
01:20:46Smith took a quick tap
01:20:48he almost got there
01:20:50at that stage they might have just decided to
01:20:52put the penalty over
01:21:01It was Liner that could
01:21:03saw a half gap there and he put on the gas
01:21:05tried to ghost his way through
01:21:07and Campisi who saw the trial line
01:21:09just a metre away, but that's where the defence nailed him
01:21:11back on the Irish 22
01:21:13no way through there for Smith, wrapped up by
01:21:15Philip Matthews
01:21:17good play there by Lawton
01:21:19Papworth the quick hands to Campisi
01:21:21support from Millett
01:21:23pushing it wide to Burke
01:21:25Matt Burke looking for his second try
01:21:27what a try
01:21:32the smiles
01:21:34on the faces of the Australian reserves
01:21:36tell it all, Matt Burke
01:21:38pushes Australia up into the 30s
01:21:40after 22 minutes in the second spell
01:21:42Burke gets his second try
01:21:44and it was made by the quick hands
01:21:46that pushed the ball wide, Campisi
01:21:48who cut out Ringland
01:21:50managed to stand up on the tackle and good thinking
01:21:52there by Miller who pushed it very wide to Burke
01:21:54and he just ghosted through that gap between
01:21:56McNeil and Bradley
01:21:58and in for his second try
01:22:00this is one of the great things about Burke of course
01:22:02is the power of the man
01:22:04watch how when he gets it he senses there is a gap
01:22:06that's Campisi with the ball looking for support
01:22:08finds it with Miller the loose board
01:22:10and here he comes with the power
01:22:12steps inside, he could see the gap was there
01:22:14and there's the strength of his push off
01:22:16and over, fairly wide out
01:22:18and almost near the back line
01:22:20a dead ball line
01:22:22however I think in fairness to Burke
01:22:24he always saw the dead ball line there
01:22:26and he was never going to get it
01:22:28it's not a very deep one here at the Concord Oval
01:22:30the sponsor's signs had to fit in behind the goal post
01:22:32and so
01:22:34the in goal area
01:22:36has been shortened
01:22:38however
01:22:42so the
01:22:44favourite teams in this World Cup
01:22:46starting to hit form
01:22:48the All Blacks, the Frenchmen
01:22:50and now the Australians
01:22:58when you're hot you're hot I suppose
01:23:00and Michael Lynas certainly
01:23:02has got his kicking boots on today
01:23:0433-3 and the Irishman
01:23:06looking down the barrel of a good old
01:23:08fashion hiding
01:23:10this is the biggest victory the Australians
01:23:12have ever recorded in their 40 year
01:23:14history of internationals against
01:23:16the Irish and it was
01:23:18again that man Campisi
01:23:20and Miller, no praise too high
01:23:22there for Jeff Miller for pushing the ball out
01:23:24wide to Burke and
01:23:26McNeil trying to push him
01:23:28towards the touchline but he slipped through the gap that was
01:23:30created and threw for the try
01:23:36and you'd have to be a pretty good player to get past
01:23:38Hugo McNeil
01:23:40as Matt Burke did on that occasion
01:23:42so that speaks volumes for the Australian winger
01:23:44Burke who may not have played in this
01:23:46match if Roger Gould was fully
01:23:48fit and Campisi had taken his place
01:23:50on the wing
01:23:52you're quite right there Brendan
01:23:54incidentally we got back to this play
01:23:56here while that replay
01:23:58was on, it was kicked right to
01:24:00Campisi and Campisi put it back to
01:24:02this position
01:24:04McNeil up from fullback
01:24:06and he's kicking for Crossan
01:24:08Campisi's
01:24:10there again pushing the ball back knowing that McNeil
01:24:12is up in the play but Bradley
01:24:14is covering for his fullback
01:24:18he hasn't found touch, now what's Campisi
01:24:20going to do here, they're going to spin it wide
01:24:22Smith in the middle of the paddock
01:24:24Burke to liner should I say
01:24:36the ball has gone forward from an Irish forward
01:24:38the referee playing advantage for the Australians
01:24:40Campisi has seen a lot of the play this afternoon
01:24:42and slides
01:24:44the ball ever so sweetly into touch
01:24:48it's a long pass from
01:24:50Patworth
01:24:52on Campisi
01:24:54Campisi who's now living
01:24:56here in Sydney, he's a member of the Rambler Club
01:24:58although I understand that he hasn't
01:25:00actually had a game yet for the Rambler Club here
01:25:02we're halfway through the season he hasn't
01:25:04had a run yet
01:25:06meanwhile there's an injury back
01:25:08far across the paddock
01:25:10to an Australian and an Irishman
01:25:12and it's
01:25:14Brendan Mullen
01:25:16the youngest member of the Irish backline
01:25:19who's getting a bit of the
01:25:21not so much the magic sponge
01:25:23here as the magic
01:25:25ice or the magic freeze
01:25:29it's interesting you're talking about
01:25:31Campisi playing for Randwick
01:25:33he went to Randwick this year, has not played there
01:25:35and it's basically
01:25:37because of representative
01:25:39commitments, it's something
01:25:41that I must admit does
01:25:43at this point a lot of Sydney followers
01:25:45of rugby, but they
01:25:47do not
01:25:49the tournaments such as this see much of their
01:25:51star players and I guess that happens in Auckland too
01:25:53that's right, if it's any consolation to you
01:25:55Trevor it's also a major problem in the
01:25:57metropolitan areas in New Zealand of course now
01:25:59with the advent of the South Pacific Championship and I think
01:26:01John Kirwan also will probably be on
01:26:03about a similar rating with
01:26:05Campisi, I don't think he's had a game
01:26:07for his club side this year either
01:26:11a great pity I believe
01:26:14Willie Cuthbert, the front of the line out
01:26:16for the Australians
01:26:18Campbell, number three
01:26:20Steve Cuthbert
01:26:22tries to get his hands
01:26:24under the ball
01:26:30it's been a tough day for Paul
01:26:32Bean today
01:26:34yes he's, he hasn't
01:26:36even when he's passed the ball he hasn't looked
01:26:38very happy at all
01:26:40been under pressure all afternoon
01:26:42Bradley, running wide
01:26:44and mulling up towards the 22
01:26:46but no way through the Australian defence
01:26:48there and Bradley again, kicking over
01:26:50the top
01:26:58Bradley who like four
01:27:00members of this Australian, of Irish side today
01:27:02made their debuts for Ireland against
01:27:04the Australian team in 1984
01:27:06in the match
01:27:08at Dublin which the Australians
01:27:10won by 16 points to 9 and what was
01:27:12their toughest victory on that Grand Slam
01:27:142 in fact it was the only time in the
01:27:16series that they were behind
01:27:18as we're looking at Brendan Mullin
01:27:20who looks like another casualty in the Irish side
01:27:22but he's up and he's all right but he's
01:27:24favouring his leg a little
01:27:26and he must have damaged himself
01:27:28in this very strong tackle
01:27:30when he took the pass
01:27:32and the Irish forwards came in over
01:27:34the top of him and I think he might have
01:27:36sustained a blow to his knee
01:27:38he is in fact coming off the field
01:27:40yes I think
01:27:42the way the players came down on top of him
01:27:44he had his leg awkwardly placed
01:27:46and now we just have to do some
01:27:48mental arithmetic to see how many replacements
01:27:50have the Irish got on
01:27:54so many players coming and going, they're only allowed two
01:27:56of course
01:27:58well I think there's only been two
01:28:00this is the second one
01:28:02there's a replacement on the Australian team
01:28:04so we have actually had
01:28:06three replacements
01:28:08but they're allowed two under international rules in each team
01:28:10and it looks as if it's
01:28:12David Irwin, number 16
01:28:14that's about to come on
01:28:20so the Irish
01:28:22back to their full complement of 15
01:28:24with about 14 minutes of the match
01:28:26remaining but the Australians are ahead by
01:28:2833 points to 3, it was 24-0
01:28:30at half time, one second half try to Matt Burke
01:28:32Irwin quickly into the fray
01:28:34but he's lost the ball
01:28:36two Australians there outside the 22, good play by Dean
01:28:38as he went underneath it
01:28:40and halted that
01:28:42promising move by the Australians
01:28:48and another absolute mess
01:28:50for which Mr Anderson says we must have this game
01:28:56Alan Jones surprised a little bit
01:28:58in this selection of Miller, not surprised
01:29:00everyone but Miller is
01:29:02really getting around the field
01:29:04and in that case he followed that ball right
01:29:06and he was the man that upset the centres
01:29:08of Ireland
01:29:12Line up, the long pass
01:29:14to Campisi, if he had taken that
01:29:16he probably would have been in
01:29:18he was going at 100 miles an hour but he couldn't handle it
01:29:22but he's recovered very quickly
01:29:24he's a bit too casual
01:29:26with his kick and he hasn't found touch
01:29:28Bradley
01:29:30I think those Australian forwards
01:29:32were well up inside the 10 metre circle
01:29:36they didn't retire
01:29:38outside the 10 metre circle
01:29:40so they've been penalised
01:29:42that was an instance where we suddenly see
01:29:44the bad play of Campisi
01:29:46very casual, dangerous kick
01:29:50and it was not needed at all
01:29:56Bradley
01:29:58Black
01:30:00who's had a very quiet day
01:30:02it's centre for Australia this afternoon
01:30:04it's been Leiner and Campisi
01:30:06that have undirected much of the Australian back play
01:30:08this afternoon
01:30:10Leiner having a little run
01:30:12but now he's having quite a big run backwards
01:30:14and Ireland finally getting it together
01:30:16in the forwards
01:30:18there's some fire in those Irish forwards at last
01:30:20but it's probably a bit too late
01:30:22and there's Hugo McNeil up from fullback as well
01:30:24so they're all in there at the moment
01:30:26it's there for the Australian backs
01:30:28Dean Kiernan
01:30:30Ringland has come in from the right wing
01:30:32Crossan but the pass wasn't the best to Keith Crossan
01:30:34he had to check his stride
01:30:36and that gave the Australian defence time to nail him
01:30:38but the Australians are caught offside
01:30:42Keith Crossan with a wry smile on his face
01:30:44but if that pass had been a little better
01:30:46it might have been interesting
01:30:50slight altercation there
01:30:52with Crossan and Campisi
01:30:56another stoppage window
01:31:00they may replay it
01:31:02Crossan was bumped by Leiner
01:31:04which was just one of those things
01:31:06that really meant nothing
01:31:08to David Campisi
01:31:10let's see if we can see it
01:31:12here's Leiner coming up
01:31:14that's on the far side
01:31:16Michael Leiner who made a return trip here
01:31:18he went up and he came down
01:31:20this is not the incident we were about to talk about
01:31:22because it's on this side of the field
01:31:24Leiner going backwards
01:31:26and the ball finally on the ground
01:31:28and Island Pack looking a lot better
01:31:30good play there by Terry Kingston
01:31:32the Irish hooker who managed to free it to Matthews
01:31:34and
01:31:36eventually it came back to Bradley
01:31:38and let's have a look at this pass first of all to Crossan
01:31:40you'll see here this last pass from Ringland
01:31:42to Crossan where he just had to stop
01:31:44and pull it in a bit
01:31:46and the defence managed to catch him
01:31:48there's the bump
01:31:50and you'll see Campisi come in
01:31:52and have a little bit of an argument there
01:31:56so from the penalty
01:32:02the Irish
01:32:0410 metres short of the line
01:32:06Spillane
01:32:08Hugo McNeil
01:32:10and another try to the Irish fullback
01:32:12he makes a regular job of scoring tries
01:32:14to this man
01:32:16and he's picked up another one today
01:32:20he got two
01:32:22he got another one against the Canadians
01:32:24and he gets another World Cup try today
01:32:26to give a smidgen
01:32:28of respectability to the Irish
01:32:30scoreline at 33-7
01:32:32and it was a very good try too
01:32:34from the tap penalty
01:32:36it was Matthews that took play up to more than 10 metres
01:32:38laid up very nicely for Bradley
01:32:40Spillane
01:32:42the quick hands out to McNeil
01:32:44at full speed the dummy
01:32:46and Hugo McNeil
01:32:48this very experienced Irish fullback in for the try
01:32:50and the try was converted
01:32:52and here of course is the step back
01:32:54by McNeil
01:32:56he wrong footed the defence
01:32:58or the cover defence couldn't quite get to him
01:33:00a good try
01:33:02and Michael Kiernan can take some of the credit
01:33:04for that try for a very slick pass
01:33:06to him to McNeil
01:33:08which put him in the clear
01:33:10so the Irish reply with a try in the second half
01:33:12so the try count in the second spell
01:33:14has been one apiece, one to Burke
01:33:16and now one to McNeil, it's 33-9
01:33:22about 10 minutes of the match remaining
01:33:24so the Irish are going to need
01:33:26a lot more tries than that
01:33:28if their World Cup
01:33:30campaign is to last
01:33:32beyond another 10 minutes
01:33:38for this tournament which started
01:33:40with 16 teams
01:33:42a couple of weeks ago
01:33:44is now down to 5
01:33:46for tomorrow of course
01:33:48there will only be 4 teams left in the World Cup
01:33:50Slack, the Australian
01:33:52captain, Grigg
01:33:54we've seen very little of the Australian
01:33:56midfielders this afternoon or
01:33:58Peter Grigg
01:34:00it's been quite amazing the amount of play
01:34:02that has gone to Leiner, Campisi and Burke
01:34:04and Papworth, Slack
01:34:06and Grigg
01:34:08Grigg have virtually been passengers in this match
01:34:10for most of it
01:34:12Australia's backline play has changed
01:34:14with this team this year
01:34:16they're very rarely sending the ball along
01:34:18on a straight backline movement
01:34:20it's been quite interesting, which I think is a fault
01:34:22they do a lot of cut-out play
01:34:26Smith running from midfield
01:34:28and now Brett Papworth
01:34:30has an opportunity as he gives chase but the kick was too deep
01:34:38so another opportunity here for the Australians
01:34:42they're only 10 metres from the Irish line
01:34:44Brian Smith
01:34:46giving his instructions
01:34:48to his
01:34:50line-up
01:34:52but it's an Irish throw, Kingston
01:34:54and a good tap from
01:34:56Philip Matthews, it's Irish ball
01:34:58Bradley, Hedin
01:35:00gets away from Leiner
01:35:02I think that Australia
01:35:04will try very hard now
01:35:14The Irish have been penalised in that line-out
01:35:16so a kicking opportunity here for Leiner
01:35:18but surely they'll take the tap, yes they do
01:35:20and Leiner's putting it into the end goal area
01:35:24and it's a bit of a lolly scramble
01:35:26and a green shirt gets there first
01:35:32Bradley keen to take the short
01:35:34quick drop out from the 22
01:35:40and it's certainly relieved
01:35:42the pressure
01:35:44and here's the high kick coming down
01:35:46those goalposts are tremendously high
01:35:48very difficult for the players looking through it
01:35:50Ireland lost it and then regained it
01:35:54Play has resumed from the line-out
01:35:56and it's gone right along the Irish backline
01:35:58as far as Keith Crossan on the left wing
01:36:00but the Irish are really just moving the ball
01:36:02across the paddock, they haven't made any impression
01:36:04up the field but now they are with Spallane
01:36:10and there's room there for Kiernan
01:36:12Michael Kiernan gets out of one, two tackles
01:36:14up to halfway
01:36:16seemed to drift away from the support however
01:36:18and the Irish forwards
01:36:20penalised for going in over the top
01:36:22of Kiernan after he was tackled
01:36:24just a note that the
01:36:26network news will follow
01:36:28as soon as the rugby is finished
01:36:30and that has about seven minutes to run
01:36:38so Australia
01:36:40well ahead on the penalty count as well
01:36:42there's Leiner
01:36:44angled that kick for the corner flag
01:36:46but he was off target
01:36:48but the Australians still on attack
01:36:50from the drop out of the line-out
01:36:52but the Australians still on attack
01:36:54from the drop out of the 22
01:37:04a good tack by Steve Cutler
01:37:06who doesn't seem to be bothered
01:37:08by the very deep gash to his nose
01:37:10he's continued to play on
01:37:12Smith over the top for Campisi
01:37:14and Campisi
01:37:16he nearly kept that ball in play
01:37:18the skills of this man are endless
01:37:22the skills of this man are endless
01:37:24he's the man
01:37:26and the team
01:37:28he's the man
01:37:30and the team
01:37:32over beyond the dead ball area here at the concord over which incidentally takes its name not from
01:37:36any peace or harmony that is bestowed on this ground but from the fact that it's in the suburb of concord
01:37:42bradley trips the ball into touch
01:37:47and i'm doubted australia would hope to score here
01:37:53and it's in the arms of lily crap freeze it for smith and again those australian backs
01:37:57punched very close together in the midfield and so patrick with a little kick ahead but it's
01:38:01ricocheted ricocheted off the irish boot i think it might have been knocked forward
01:38:06as well by an australian and so the scrum to take place right underneath the the irish posts
01:38:12philip matthews he's been in the wars this afternoon has had another knock
01:38:18and it all looks if he might require some medical attention as well
01:38:23yes well the australian backs in that last movement when i thought that we had a great
01:38:27opportunity of going in and the dying moments of this game here comes the movement now let's see
01:38:32how close and tight they are out wide in front of the goal post because it comes out fairly
01:38:37cleanly as you can see but they're not all in the picture but there were three or four of them
01:38:42really within arm's length of each other which makes it very difficult to
01:38:46to get the ball away and they were not standing far enough back
01:38:52and so the scrum to go down
01:38:57island with the loose head but it's right underneath their own posts and again the big
01:39:02australian scrum trying to wheel the irish off the ball spallane coming away with it
01:39:11and this in willie anderson who lays it back nicely for matthews it's just better play from
01:39:16the irish forwards perhaps if we'd seen more of this in the first 20 minutes the australians may
01:39:19not have posted those three quick tries and island could still have been in the match
01:39:23campisi controls it well that's his 22
01:39:32mcneil his opposite number and as he found touch he has so when we look back at this match we can
01:39:40see very clearly that the winning of it took place in a space of eight minutes between the 17th and
01:39:44the 25th minute of the first half in the space of seven eight minutes australia posted three tries
01:39:50and went from six nil to 24 nil and they've been in control ever since
01:39:57the irish have had their moment since then but that's really all they've been
01:40:04certainly island now not looking a very good side at all
01:40:08they're waiting for that final bell and of course it is the end of their run in the world cup series
01:40:15well i guess 1987 just wasn't meant to be the year for the irish they haven't had much luck
01:40:19they lost their key loose forward nigel carr someone claimed he's the best loose forward in
01:40:23europe he was out with an accident a few weeks a few days in fact before the irish team were due
01:40:29to leave for new zealand and they haven't had much luck since they've been down here either
01:40:35he's crossing having a little run it's there for bradley on halfway dean should i say mcneil
01:40:41up in fullback erwin pops the ball nicely over the top to trevor england but he's getting away
01:40:47from no one and away he goes back again but the ball stepped into touch
01:40:58a reminder that the television new zealand network news will be on air immediately after
01:41:02this rugby test finishes in sydney the lineup to take place just on halfway
01:41:10australia hit by 33 points to nine
01:41:12half time the australian forwards have been penalized for offside in the lineup
01:41:22inside the australian half the irish decide to tap and run it matthews
01:41:28there again for bradley and the australian forwards are really going only at half pace
01:41:32at the moment and dean couldn't get away from the ankle tap from lineup
01:41:36and into touch it goes yes if we have a look at the irish campaign for this world cup it's
01:41:44been a chapter of just little niggling things that have gone wrong for them which certainly
01:41:48haven't helped them they lost nigel car then of course their coach mick doyle had that heart
01:41:52scare in wellington he was in hospital for a couple of days then they've had a lot of traveling to do
01:42:00and they haven't had a chance really to settle down but matthews is having a very good last
01:42:04quarter in this match picks up the loose ball and charges towards the line it's there for the irish
01:42:16so absolute delight from the many irish supporters here at the concord over they've got something to
01:42:22cheer about so the irish have outscored the australians in the second half by two tries to
01:42:26one but in the end it's not going to be anywhere near enough but at least it has given some
01:42:30respectability to the scoreline and a lovely little tip there from paul dean and look at big
01:42:36phil or charging like a three-quarter a 17 stone three-quarter picked up beautifully by philip
01:42:42matthews the irish loose four was mcgrath there as well coming into their own at last
01:42:47and a little swivel there by michael kenan and the defense opened up yes and in the dying moments
01:42:55you'll notice that the australian forwards are very slow to come across and cover all this play
01:43:00which the driving forwards of ireland have really carried out the australian forwards
01:43:04who have said the game's all over but it wasn't because here's the breakthrough
01:43:08and a very neat step through beating the defense
01:43:14and the try kenan converted his own try 33 to 15 with the full time about a minute away
01:43:21so the irish have come back with 15 points after the wallabies perhaps understandably going off
01:43:26the boil in the latter stages of this match after they built up that big lead and there
01:43:29is the hooter for full time so the concord oval the australian campaign at last comes alive with
01:43:36a very good performance ahead by 24 to nil they won 33 to 15 and the winning of the match took
01:43:41place in a spell of eight minutes in the first half when they ran in three tries
01:43:47and at full time 33 15 to australia over ireland so in the first semi-final also
01:43:52at concord oval in sydney next saturday it will be australia against france new zealand to play
01:43:57the other semi-final a week from today and that's against the winner of tomorrow's game between
01:44:01wales and england in brisbane we're back with highlights of the lineup with the conversion
01:44:07so the australians they haven't looked too impressive but the fact is on the scoreboard
01:44:11they are looking most impressive out by 12 to nil so another opportunity for the australian backs
01:44:16just five meters from the australian line the control from climbing at the back this is a good
01:44:20scrummage from the australians very good scrummaging from the australians over the line
01:44:25it goes or does it no mr anderson who was in very good position to look at that ball
01:44:30the control just dissipated there right at the last from the australians
01:44:36we'll have another scrum the australians going forward
01:44:38so
01:44:47bradley the irish halfback ready to pounce and here we go again
01:44:52they'll try and perfect it a little bit of this time one late tyneman
01:44:59picked it up to brian smith
01:45:01that's another australian try
01:45:05and as you can see it was really pretty simple that the fence close in was not there
01:45:09and smith did it easily michael liner from 15 meters in from touch
01:45:18through what must be the tallest upwards i've ever seen at a rugby ground and i imagine it
01:45:21must be a psychological boost or advantage for a goal kicker to be kicking at these posts because
01:45:26the crossbar must look so low when you compare where it sits in relation to the height of the
01:45:31uprights
01:45:52and he's having a super game today is the 24 year old queenslander michael liner
01:45:57i'm sure from the australian's point of view nothing could be finer than the sight of michael
01:46:03liner in this sort of form the australians again on the australian on the irish line
01:46:08lineup pepworth and a beautiful support play
01:46:15and matthew burke gets the try and again it started just a few meters from the irish line
01:46:20this is where the australian backs today seem at their most lethal pepworth the little slip
01:46:25pass through to burke and there wasn't a hand laid on him liner with his easiest kick today it's
01:46:3324 points to nil
01:46:39and again those irish forwards are pretty loose but the ball is there for the mcgrath
01:46:42coming in at first five eight on full speed and dean with ringland now there's a little
01:46:47bit of room here for ringland but those orange jerseys swarm them towards the touchline
01:46:55and the irish forwards have been penalized in particular terry kingston
01:47:10going in over the top there and the australians to their relief
01:47:14receive a penalty just a couple of meters from their corner play
01:47:19as on that last move island i thought took the wrong option they came around the blind side
01:47:24and um attacking players on the front side suddenly found a wall of orange jerseys
01:47:36bradley waiting underneath it with some timely support from philip matthews 10 meters outside
01:47:41the australian 22 and bradley and there was a lineup of green jerseys here dean
01:47:48oh but a poor pass from dean and through goes campisi
01:47:54how do you control it here goes crossing getting in the chase again
01:47:58and what does mr anderson say no try there was no one in front of him at this point and again
01:48:04cross and just flew in from the wing flew in the ball drifted away a little from campisi yet
01:48:08but coming on the angle and that just slowed him up enough to allow crossing to get there
01:48:13and clear it away and the ball has gone loose on the 22
01:48:17and a hand in that ruck by an iris forward derrick mcgrath trying to push the ball back
01:48:22but didn't escape the attention of mr anderson the australians with a quick
01:48:25tap liner running hard brig campisi is just a world record he was only a meter away from it
01:48:38and this time it's an australian four that has been penalized
01:48:41well he's a real disciplinarian with the whistle is mr anderson
01:48:46and it was liner that could saw a half gap there and he put on the gas try to ghost his way through
01:48:52and campisi who saw the trial line just a meter away but that's where the defense nailed him
01:48:56back on the iris 22 no way through there for smith wrapped up by philip matthews
01:49:03good play there by lawton papworth the quick hands to campisi
01:49:07this is one of the great things about burke of course is the power of the man watch how when he
01:49:23gets it he senses there is a gap that's campisi with the ball looking for support finds it with
01:49:28miller the loose forward and here he comes with the power steps inside he could see the gap was
01:49:34there and there's the strength of his push-off and over fairly wide out and almost near the back line
01:49:47when you're hot you're hot i suppose and michael liner certainly has got his kicking boots on today
01:49:54liner having a little run but now he's having quite a big run backwards
01:49:58an island finally getting it together in the forwards fire in those irish forwards at last
01:50:02but it's probably a bit too late and there's hugo mcneil up from fullback as well so they're
01:50:08all in there at the moment they're only a few meters short of the australian line and it's
01:50:11there for the australian backs dean kiernan ringland is coming from the right wing crossing
01:50:16but the pass wasn't the best to keep crossing he had to check his stride and that gave the
01:50:20australian defense time to nail him but the australians are caught offside good play there
01:50:27by terry kingston the irish hooker who managed to free it to matthews and eventually it came back
01:50:33to bradley and let's have a look at this fast first of all to cross and you'll see here this
01:50:36last pass from ringland to cross and where he just had to stop and pull it in a bit and
01:50:42the defense managed to catch him the irish 10 meters short of the line spallane
01:50:55hugo mcneil and another try to the irish fullback it was matthews that took play up to more than 10
01:51:01meters laid up very nicely for bradley spallane the quick hands after mcneil at full speed the
01:51:08dummy and hugo mcneil this very experienced irish fullback in for the try
01:51:16after they led by 24 to nil at half time and the australian forwards have been penalized
01:51:21for offside in the lineup inside the australian half the irish decide to tap and run it matthews
01:51:28there again for bradley and the australian forwards are really going only at half pace
01:51:33and dean couldn't get away from the ankle tap from lineup
01:51:38and into touch it goes yes if we have a look at the irish campaign for this world cup it's
01:51:44been a chapter of just little niggling things that have gone wrong for them which certainly
01:51:48haven't helped them they lost nigel car then of course their coach mick doyle had that heart
01:51:52scare in wellington he was in hospital for a couple of days then they've had a lot of traveling to do
01:51:56and they haven't had a chance really to settle down but matthews is having a very good last
01:52:04quarter in this match picks up the loose ball and charges towards the line it's there for the irish
01:52:14and a lovely little tip there from paul dean and look at big phil or
01:52:18charging like a three-quarter a 17 stone three-quarter picked up beautifully by philip
01:52:23matthews the irish loose forwards mcgrath there as well coming into their own at last
01:52:28and a little swivel there by michael kenan and the defense opened up and michael kenan converted
01:52:36his own try the final score 33 points to 15 to australia over ireland it was a match which
01:52:42really must rank as one of the worst spectacles of the entire tournament but australia had that
01:52:46decisive period between about the 18th and 25th minute in the first half when they scored three
01:52:51tries and opened up to a 24 points to nil lead well after match reaction from concord oval now
01:52:58here's donald lenohan and andrew slack it was obviously very highly uh the first 25 minutes
01:53:04was something else when they were thinking about that wales test and card up at one stage but
01:53:08no it's a good good day he lost nick far james in the first couple of minutes didn't seem to upset
01:53:13the side at all no i mean we obviously feel that smitty is a great replacement and he proved that
01:53:19although losing someone like nick in the first minute is difficult so it's particularly good
01:53:22effort for the guys to put that out of their head but i mean smithy did the job when he was on there
01:53:26you know the australians seem to really turn on the quarterfinals also the attitude seemed to
01:53:30change yeah well you know as much as we try and build ourselves up for other games i don't think
01:53:35the australian team has had a uh one of their characteristics hasn't been to really switch on
01:53:39for the lower type of test matches but when they count i think we do and that was proven today
01:53:44they're very disappointed um you know we got off to a terrible start and there's no way
01:53:49you can beat australia when you go 15 20 pints down whatever it was but the thing that i was
01:53:53most pleased about again is that you know after 20 minutes our backs were to the wall and we said
01:53:57look we've 60 minutes left in the world cup let's go out and let's have a cut and i was proud of
01:54:01everyone there today they gave everything particularly his tough traveling schedule
01:54:06donald didn't get counted against you well uh i think it did at the start of the competition
01:54:11i think we've done more traveling than any other team in the world cup and as a result of that it
01:54:15took us the first two games to get all that traveling out of our system i thought we came
01:54:19back against tonga while we had a great game and um you know we were slow starting today but
01:54:24you know if it was a 60 minute game forget the first 20 minutes i think we did all right
01:54:29donald lenahan and his team on their way home after being eliminated in the quarterfinals
01:54:33in sydney this afternoon
