00:00A family moves into a centuries-old home and uncovers its ominous history.
00:12They'll list one on murderers to mass murderers.
00:17You name it, it happens.
00:20What begins with mysterious noises.
00:23What is that?
00:24Here you go, Casey.
00:26And an imaginary friend turns into something so dark, so evil.
00:32It was trying to kill me.
00:34I'm fighting with all my might.
00:36Only a higher power can save them.
00:39Jay!
00:40It will never back down.
00:42It will go out and destroy you any way that it can.
00:45You're all going to die.
00:50In America, there is real evil.
00:54It lurks in the darkest shadows and in our most ordinary towns.
00:59Between the worlds we see and the things we fear, there are doors.
01:06When they are opened, nightmares become reality.
01:12New England's idyllic countryside attracts many families looking to put down roots in its picture postcard communities.
01:27It was a very nice area.
01:30And it was kind of on the upper scale.
01:33We thought it was going to be a nice area, a good school to raise a family.
01:39Jay Yable and his family are lucky to move into an historic, late 18th century house near the town center.
01:50It was a large home.
01:53And it was something that I could call my own.
01:56And the price was more than reasonable at the time.
02:00Jay is retired military and now works as a maintenance supervisor at a nearby office complex.
02:06Got some water for you.
02:08Oh, yes!
02:09His wife, Elka, works as a medical assistant.
02:12Oh my gosh, babe.
02:13It is so much bigger than I remembered.
02:18Welcome to the American dream.
02:22When I first met Elka, her upbeat spirit, that's what kind of drew me to her.
02:27I think we knew right from the beginning that it was going to be a match.
02:30We take a break.
02:34Girls?
02:36The spacious home seems the perfect place to raise their twin girls, Alex and Riley.
02:41Huh? What do you think?
02:43It looks like the biggest, most beautiful dollhouse ever.
02:47It's all ours? Even the trees?
02:49Even the trees.
02:51Jay can't wait to show off the house to his friend, Mike Sokol.
02:55Oh, right here.
02:57Oh, yeah.
02:59Jay and I grew up together, attended each other's weddings, children's births, baptisms.
03:05Helping us move, man, that goes beyond friendship.
03:08I've known him since I was like five years old.
03:10We were best friends. He's like a brother to me.
03:15Man, you are so sweet.
03:17He's like a brother to me.
03:20Man, you are really moving on up.
03:24Just look at this.
03:29Girls, please don't get in Daddy's way.
03:31Hey, come back here, you little rascals!
03:36You're wearing me out.
03:38Hey. Yes.
03:39I know you have your reservations. Yes.
03:41Look, when Jay and Elka found the house, it was a little more of a hard sell for her.
03:45After we unpack.
03:46And spackle and paint and fix these creaky floors.
03:51Oh, it's a lot of work.
03:52I said, once we start to decorate it and make it look nice, it's going to become your home.
03:57It's going to be something special.
03:59Hey, Jay, come back in here. I need you.
04:01Yes.
04:03But it's more than just the renovations.
04:06Elka's instincts tell her something is not right about the house.
04:11Something she can't identify.
04:15Elka's like, I don't like it. Something's wrong.
04:33You're all going to die.
04:38Over the following weeks, painting and major repairs are done.
04:42And the family settles into a comfortable routine.
04:46Tell me again why we use a baby monitor for our kids?
04:49As old as they are?
04:51Because your children like to wake up in the middle of the night and go exploring.
04:56You remember the time we caught Riley heading out the back door at midnight to find the cat?
05:00Oh, hello.
05:02Oh.
05:03Mommy, can we have some?
05:05Okay, but just one because I do not want you to spoil your dinner.
05:10Excuse me, I said just one.
05:12But this one's for Casey.
05:15That would be their new imaginary friend.
05:18My daughters would talk about sometimes they would play with somebody, a girl in their room,
05:24and we thought it was just imaginary friends like a lot of kids would have.
05:32That one's for Casey.
05:33You are something else.
05:42For seven months, all has been relatively tranquil in the house.
05:46Until one night.
06:04Hey.
06:12Jay?
06:23What is that?
06:25I have no idea.
06:27Somebody or something is banging on the walls.
06:30Boom, boom, boom.
06:33Could be the pipes.
06:34An old house like this?
06:36Wait, wait, wait. Listen.
06:40It was like someone scratching on a wall of claws.
06:49Over here.
06:55Sounds like it's coming from all around us.
07:00Like something trying to get out.
07:02Or in.
07:09Jay suspects it's neighborhood kids pulling a prank.
07:16But there is no one in sight.
07:19I looked on the porch and at this point I was dumbfounded.
07:24Anything?
07:25No.
07:26I said nobody could move that fast.
07:30Weird.
07:38A few nights later, the strange sounds continue.
07:44This time from the audio monitor connected to the twins' bedroom.
07:51Jay?
07:52Hmm?
07:53Did you leave the TV on?
07:55No.
08:00What is that noise?
08:14It's static.
08:16I shouldn't be doing that.
08:18What's wrong with it?
08:20Hmm?
08:31You're all going to die.
08:34Oh my God, the girls! The girls!
08:37The Apple Family
08:47In 2006, the Apple family moves into a late 18th century house in suburban Connecticut.
08:56At first all is calm.
08:58But a few months later they begin hearing strange noises they can't explain.
09:07What is that?
09:08Things are happening and I have no idea what's going on.
09:16One night, the mysterious sounds grow threatening
09:20when a message comes across the audio monitor from their daughter's bedroom.
09:29You're all going to die.
09:32You hear this voice and it says you all are going to die.
09:36Oh my God, the girls! The girls!
09:43We jumped up and we ran right into the kids' room.
09:51And there was nothing.
09:53They're fine.
09:54They were sound asleep.
09:57No one's here. No one's been here.
10:01Elka's initial wariness about the house now turns to fear.
10:07There's something wrong with this house, Jay.
10:09I'm telling you.
10:11There's something wrong with this house.
10:13She knew there was too many coincidences that weren't adding up
10:17and she was convinced at this point there was something really bad in the house.
10:23I'm like, just calm down.
10:25I said, ignore it.
10:27Ignore it. Ignore it.
10:29I'm trying to rationalize things.
10:31But there is nothing logical about these sounds.
10:46One afternoon, Jay stays home from work to take care of the girls
10:49when Elka comes down with the flu.
10:56Would you like some more tea, honey?
10:58No, I'm fine. Thank you, though.
11:01After moving into the house, Elka changed a little bit.
11:04She seemed to become ill more.
11:14Jay?
11:16Yeah, I heard it.
11:22What is that?
11:25Sounds like someone upstairs.
11:30You could hear someone taking like a cane or stick
11:33and going up and down on the side of the kids' bed.
11:39Casey's here.
11:42Casey is Riley's imaginary friend.
11:46But Jay doesn't believe in the invisible.
11:49As an ex-soldier trained for combat,
11:51he decides to take action against the intruder.
12:00I went to my room
12:02and I grabbed my weapon.
12:06My heart is beating fast.
12:08I'm praying.
12:11My heart is beating fast.
12:13I'm praying.
12:15I don't ever want to have to shoot somebody in my house.
12:28Jay finds no one and nothing disturbed in Alex and Riley's room.
12:34And the sounds grow more insistent.
12:39And it was loud, like somebody's really angry.
12:43Whoever was in the house was actually right above my head
12:47and I figured if there was somebody up there, I had them
12:50because they were in the attic and there was no way out.
13:04There was nothing. There was nobody.
13:18I don't get it. What were those noises?
13:21I told you. Something is not right.
13:27Alka is starting to think that the house is haunted.
13:31I would say that there's got to be a logical explanation.
13:34Maybe what we really heard wasn't footsteps
13:37or maybe it wasn't the rapping sounds.
13:39Maybe it's the old house creaking or settling.
13:43Weeks pass, and Alka grows more afraid.
13:49She'd be like, you know, I don't feel safe in this house.
13:52There's something going on.
13:54She would feel like someone would be standing back and watching her.
14:00I don't know what to do.
14:02I don't know what to do.
14:04I don't know what to do.
14:06I don't know what to do.
14:08I don't know what to do.
14:10Someone is watching her.
14:40Deep in the heart of New England, a family of four is haunted by mysterious sounds they
15:04can't explain.
15:16Wherever she goes, Elka Yaple senses something in the house.
15:21Elka had come to Jay and said, you know, I think there's some kind of spirits in our
15:26house.
15:27And of course I was skeptical.
15:33One afternoon, Elka feels the presence growing stronger.
16:20Elka thinks she's safe, but there's no escaping.
16:51Jay!
16:56Jay!
17:03The toys just went off altogether, and they were getting louder and louder.
17:10Stop it!
17:18Every single toy stopped simultaneously.
17:25Enough!
17:27I want out of this house!
17:28I want out of this house!
17:33Honey?
17:36After the toy incident, I started believing there was something really wrong.
17:42I kept thinking maybe if it was a ghost, it was somebody who lived there and didn't like
17:47us being in their house.
17:52Unable to take his wife's distress any longer, Jay goes on a mission.
17:57That's when I decided I was going to go down to the town hall and start doing research
18:03to see if anybody died in the house.
18:09Town records indicate the house was built in the late 1700s.
18:13And right away, Jay notices something peculiar.
18:16The house was bought by somebody.
18:18A year later, it was sold.
18:19Bought.
18:20Six months later, sold.
18:21A year and a half, sold.
18:22Seven years, sold.
18:24And this is the pattern.
18:29Jay makes another sobering discovery.
18:33What's up, buddy?
18:35Mike.
18:37Jay shares his findings with his best friend.
18:40There have been a lot of deaths in this house.
18:43What?
18:45Look at this.
18:49Jay finds over a dozen murders, suicides, and accidental deaths related to the house.
18:58And not just people that lived here, but friends, neighbors, people associated with the house.
19:06I found that there was a lengthy history of really bizarre occurrences.
19:10So that kind of put a little chill down my back.
19:13I'm like, whoa.
19:15I started believing the house is haunted.
19:24We are trying to contact the spirit or entity in this house.
19:29Reveal yourself.
19:30Jay contacts Orlando Ferranti, head of the Paranormal Research Society of Connecticut,
19:35a non-profit group of paranormal investigators.
19:37Anything?
19:40Maybe there's nothing here.
19:43Oh, no.
19:45I can feel something.
19:48When I got into the home, you could just feel the oppression and the negative energy in that household.
19:55I've never felt that kind of energy before in my life.
19:57It's just a cesspool of negativity.
20:03I walked around the house with a recording device and some EMF detectors.
20:09EMF detectors measure electromagnetic fields.
20:13An energy spike indicates possible paranormal activity.
20:18I wasn't getting any abnormal readings, but I still felt this oppression.
20:23I was very concerned about this negative energy because it was watching me.
20:27It did not want me there.
20:29Orlando.
20:33Suddenly, the team psychic picks up on the energy.
21:00All of a sudden, the spirit is talking through his body.
21:04The psychic changed from his normal, quiet personality into this arrogant, nasty, demonic.
21:19Are you the entity who controls this house?
21:23Who are you?
21:25Name yourself.
21:27You are all going to die.
21:34You're going to hell.
21:37Why do you torment this family?
21:39Do you want somebody to come after me?
21:52Ever since the Yaple family moved into a historic New England house,
21:56they have felt a dark presence.
22:01And when Jay uncovers more than a dozen murders, suicides, and accidental deaths related to the house,
22:07the former military man has no choice but to believe.
22:11I live in a haunted house. I'm starting to get very frightened.
22:15There's something that is pure evil.
22:21Jay reaches out to paranormal experts to investigate the house.
22:25And suddenly, the psychic channels a dark entity.
22:29You are all going to die.
22:33And things turn violent.
22:41Lily!
22:42Are you alright? Are you okay?
22:46Anything with that kind of power that can pick up a human being and throw them is something demonic.
22:53Orlando suspects the number of deaths related to the house could have attracted a demon.
23:00A lot of that negative energy becomes residual negative energy, and it could attract other negative energies.
23:07It's almost like a beacon.
23:10When he mentioned a demon, I was terrified.
23:13We were worried about Alex and Riley and their safety, along with our safety.
23:19Orlando promises he will put together a plan to help them.
23:24He wanted to get all kinds of evidence that he could bring to the church to help the church authorize an exorcism and a house.
23:39A week later.
23:49A week later.
24:19A week later.
24:25There was this girl.
24:27Like she came back from a dance or something.
24:44She was trying to kill me.
24:46I was fighting with all my might, and I'm not a small guy, I'm a pretty big guy, and I'm fighting.
24:58I'm like, this is a bad dream.
25:00I went to yell for alcohol, and I couldn't speak.
25:04My voice was gone.
25:06All of a sudden, there was like a popping sound.
25:13And it was gone.
25:17What a nightmare. What a horrible nightmare.
25:21Or so he thinks.
25:36The following morning, to Jay's horror, the nightmare appears to have been real.
25:43That scared me to the core.
25:49What happened?
25:53I don't know.
25:55Like it was like, I don't know.
25:57I don't know.
25:59I don't know.
26:01I don't know.
26:03I don't know.
26:05I kept playing this scenario over my head.
26:09Why did it happen? What was it? Could it come back?
26:13Could it attack my girls? Could it attack my wife?
26:21Jay consults with a paranormal expert who believes he knows what happened.
26:26He experienced phantomania, which is basically the experience of being frozen, if you will.
26:34The energy is being sucked out of you and being used by the spirit.
26:39He thinks the entity that attacked Jay could be a shape-shifting demon.
26:46It's possible that this negative energy or demonic entity could be changing its form.
26:52It could change itself to a female, it could change itself to a child, it could change itself to even an animal.
26:58Orlando also has bad news for Jay.
27:01He won't be coming back.
27:03And there's no way I can come back to the house anymore.
27:05The demon is affecting his family.
27:09I had to back out of the investigation.
27:11I understand.
27:13My kids come first, and they were being traumatized by something unseen.
27:18My oldest son, for a week straight, had these nightmares, these horrible nightmares of an old man with a decrepit-looking face.
27:31They were actually getting visions of my house in their heads.
27:36I had to back away, but I didn't want to give up trying to help Jay.
27:43I wanted to take my family at that point and run, and I couldn't.
27:47Everything the Yaple family owns is tied up in the house.
27:52I had to stay and fight, and I was fighting alone.
27:56The family was becoming more isolated.
27:58Everyone just didn't want to attend his house.
28:01I felt terrible.
28:02We've been friends for years, you know, 30-plus years, and there's nothing I can do to help him.
28:08And there's nothing I can do to help him.
28:12Would you like some more cake?
28:15Yes, please.
28:16Jay is frightened for his family, but relieved his daughters appear immune from danger.
28:24It seemed like it had boundaries.
28:25It has, like, rules of engagement.
28:29This entity would go after Elko or try to scare me.
28:33Would you like some more tea?
28:34Yes, please.
28:35For some reason, this thing would not go after my children.
28:39Don't forget Casey.
28:44There you go, Casey.
28:56Elko is less optimistic about their chances.
28:59She copes by maintaining a normal routine.
29:05Jay?
29:16Jay?
29:19Jay!
29:26What?
29:27Shh, shh, shh, shh.
29:30Do you hear it?
29:32No.
29:33I swear, there was something here, and it was watching me.
29:36Just listen.
29:44I heard something, and it sounded like it was on two hoofs.
29:52What is that?
29:57Really, really scared me.
30:03Fuck.
30:14For two years, the Yable family has been living in a centuries-old mansion with a dark secret.
30:20A past filled with sadness and death.
30:24Could this unsettling history have invited a shape-shifting demon into the home?
30:29I've seen what a really bad entity is.
30:34It was so terrifying.
30:36Just listen.
30:39One night, the demon traps Jay and Elko in their attic.
30:46We could actually hear this hoofed animal.
30:52And you could see the footprints.
30:54And you could see the footprints.
30:57Total fear went over me.
31:00I have a big fear of the devil himself.
31:02That's what was going on in my mind, it was actually the devil himself.
31:06This thing could see me, I couldn't see it.
31:09I was like, we're dead meat, you know, we're screwed, I can't do anything.
31:13It stopped.
31:28Can we go?
31:30Slow.
31:31Okay.
31:44Day 2
31:48Desperate to protect his family, Jay calls in Bob Baker of Connecticut Paranormal Investigators, an expert in demonic hauntings.
31:57Thank you so much for coming.
31:59Where would you like…
32:01He immediately senses something.
32:05Whatever was in that house met me right at the door.
32:08You could feel the oppression there.
32:14Day 3
32:25Let's start upstairs.
32:27The Aples were very scared.
32:30I could see that they had already been through hell.
32:32They weren't sleeping, it was affecting their health.
32:35Day 4
32:39Bob and his team measure the electromagnetic field in the house to detect for paranormal activity.
32:50I think we got something here.
32:56Do you hear that?
32:57Do you hear that?
33:03We actually heard something come walking down the attic stairs.
33:11It sounded like a weight about 500 pounds.
33:14We didn't know whether to run or to stay.
33:19What happened? Are you alright?
33:21My back started burning.
33:22I had like nine scratches on my back.
33:25It was like somebody took a whip and just whipped Bob.
33:28It's very painful.
33:30It's just like getting scratched by a human.
33:32It's the same feeling.
33:33It draws blood and it hurts just as bad.
33:37Bob believes an attack such as this could indicate the presence of a special kind of demon called a Wendigo.
33:45The Wendigo type of demon can be very vicious.
33:47The Wendigo type of demon can be very vicious.
33:50They hate us and they just want us dead.
33:55In many cases, the demon is there first.
33:58You kind of acquire it when you move in.
34:01According to Bob, moving may not help the Yabel family get rid of the demon.
34:07If the Yabels had gotten out right away, within the first six months,
34:11they probably would have gotten away with not having too much of a problem afterwards.
34:14But because they stayed so long, an attachment does form.
34:19You have to fight the battle where it starts.
34:22If you move away, then this thing will just torment you for the rest of your life.
34:26You're all going to die.
34:29That was really disturbing.
34:31I knew this thing could follow me and wreak more havoc on my life.
34:36I was concerned about them being in the house.
34:39Jay seemed generally afraid and concerned for his family.
34:42He was overwhelmed by it. It was almost consuming him.
34:48Jay turns to his faith for strength.
34:52I always become more religious.
34:54If something's out to hurt me and it's negative,
34:57I'm going to go in the opposite direction and become stronger with my faith.
35:01Bob reassures Jay that he will bring over a Dominican Order bishop who is a world-renowned exorcist.
35:13The bishop can't come right away.
35:16The Yaples have no choice but to wait, hoping the haunting will not grow more dangerous.
35:27I don't want to go in that house.
35:30I know.
35:37Alright, girls.
35:40Are you Dolly?
35:42Watch your fingers.
35:44Are you ready?
35:46Hi, hon. I'm going to go get the mail.
35:48Okay.
35:50Papa?
35:51Yeah, baby?
35:53Casey's getting mad.
35:55Casey's your imaginary friend, right?
35:57You have to tell Jesus to stay away from the house.
36:04I said, why would you say that?
36:06Riley says to me, she goes, Casey doesn't like you, Papa.
36:12That's not a very nice thing for Casey to say, sweetheart.
36:15Casey is bad.
36:17Alright? I don't think you should listen to her.
36:19In suburban Connecticut, the Yaple family is tormented by a shape-changing demon some call a Wendigo.
36:49Their best hope is to have a world-renowned bishop perform an exorcism of the house, an ancient ritual to cast out demons.
36:59The bishop reassures the family he will come as soon as he's able.
37:03But it won't be soon enough.
37:06Papa?
37:07Yeah, baby?
37:09Casey's getting mad.
37:19All of a sudden, you can hear the truck start rolling backwards, and Elka almost goes under the wheel.
37:29Jay!
37:30Elka!
37:31The truck would have rolled over Elka and actually killed her.
37:34Are you okay?
37:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:39Are you alright?
37:41Jay now realizes the twins have been interacting with an evil entity, but feels powerless to stop it.
37:53The imaginary friend Casey was becoming more and more dangerous.
37:58So now I'm totally desperate.
38:01I'm worried about my children, I'm worried about Elka, she almost got killed.
38:05Now I really need to have an exorcist come in.
38:09The day comes when the bishop arrives to perform an exorcism of the house.
38:20You girls ready for the baptism?
38:23He begins by re-baptizing Alex and Riley.
38:27We already had them baptized.
38:29I baptize thee in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
38:33And he says, no, he goes, they're being baptized by me.
38:37In the Holy Spirit.
38:40The bishop talked to Riley about the imaginary friends, and then he took the stone and made the sign of the cross over it,
38:47and told her not to speak any more of them, that they cannot hurt her or touch her, and to let them go.
38:54Glorious Father, we thank you for your mercy.
38:57Then the bishop begins the rite of exorcism.
39:01Save this servant from the enemy.
39:10Glorious Father,
39:17save thy servant from the enemy.
39:22Save thy servant from the enemy.
39:32Glorious Father,
39:34save this servant from the enemy.
39:43When the bishop first came in the house, he was tense and very angry.
39:47And then after he left, the house felt calm and mild.
39:58We noticed an immediate change in the house. It felt lighter.
40:04He does. He mows the grass.
40:08Food. Drinks.
40:11He read my mind.
40:12He read my mind.
40:14After I noticed the change, she was like, I actually kind of feel good.
40:18You spilled some on the table, but don't worry.
40:20I'm sorry, it's painful.
40:21Sid, that's the worst that happens? I think we're okay.
40:25After everything we've been through, everything's back to normal.
40:34Since that day, paranormal activity has returned to the Yaple house.
40:40The bishop, I believe, did weaken it to the point where we can actually live in the house.
40:48The ultimate mystery, whether a demon somehow entered the home and triggered years of violence,
40:55or if various violent events somehow attracted a demon, is one that will likely never be solved.
41:03The violence in that house was just so overwhelming over the years.
41:06Jay!
41:08I believe there was probably a demon in this house right from the beginning.
41:12The Yaples plan to move once they can sell the house.
41:16I would hope they move.
41:18Probably burn the house to the ground, one of the two.
41:21And I don't know how you get rid of it.
41:23You can't kill it, you can't blow it up.
41:25We've got to pray. That's all we have left.
41:29It's so hard to live with it.
41:31You want to get out, you pray, somebody will come up and say,
41:34Hey, I'll buy your house for you, move.
41:38I wish the town would just buy it, or someone would buy it and just destroy it.
41:43Until then, Jay Yaple's soldiers on.
41:48I'm fighting an endless war against something that's unseen,
41:52and I have no defense over it, I just have to keep my eyes open.
