Was Ty Law the only one who knew the Pats would win? What's his thoughts on the defense? What's the key for team success this season?
Transcript
00:00Um, were you as shocked as the rest of the world was by that win on Sunday?
00:04No, because I think I was the only one here that said they're going to win the first game.
00:08Am I right?
00:10I expected those guys to win. Of course, you got to think about,
00:13uh, Chase wasn't, he wasn't a hold in, you know what I mean? He wasn't playing.
00:18They didn't have that rhythm.
00:19He does not look happy there.
00:21Right.
00:21But I assume because he played.
00:24Right.
00:24That they're close to some kind of a...
00:27It looked like they, not that they forced them,
00:29but he was like, I didn't want to get hit with,
00:31did you see Hassan Riddick got hit with 800,000 for missing the game?
00:34So I think Chase didn't want to get hit with that type of money,
00:37but he did look miserable the whole game.
00:40Like, yeah, I don't want to be...
00:41I know how you can change his attitude.
00:43You know what I mean? Give him his money, pay him, pay him.
00:46And then, I mean, you're going to see somebody
00:48happy and jipper ready to go out there and play.
00:51But I felt that this was a prime time for them to get a win, get a win,
00:55get a win at home.
00:56And I did say that they were going to win as a team.
00:59I don't think anybody played outstanding.
01:01The numbers don't pop out at you, you know,
01:03the quarterback play on both sides, you know,
01:06neither one of them did anything but try to manage the game.
01:09But when you have a running game,
01:10when Stevenson is running like that,
01:12when the defense is playing and making those opportunistic plays,
01:16you got a chance.
01:17But I think in order for the Patriots to have success,
01:20they're going to have to play as a team like we did and build the name.
01:24Let people look out for you as far as an individual.
01:27The individual athletes, they'll come,
01:29but you're going to have to win as a team.
01:30Well, then he's going to have to be like the D we had then.
01:33That's going to be the biggest issue,
01:35where back when we played, obviously, those first Super Bowl runs,
01:38D was carrying the team in the sense like,
01:41all right, kept us in games, gave us great field position.
01:44And then we did like the Patriots did
01:47and the game against Cincinnati didn't make mistakes.
01:50But you got, you know, you're a secondary guy.
01:54I mean, you're talking about, you know,
01:56whether or not Chase was in it or not in it.
01:58But you certainly got, I think, a great job
02:01when it came to covering him from Christian Gonzalez.
02:06And then he got a big play from Jones.
02:09I mean, I think their defense is good all around the board.
02:14You talk about their secondary, their secondary solid,
02:16their front seven is solid.
02:18The D is going to be the reason why you're kept in games.
02:21Right, and that's solid.
02:23They're not great yet because I did see a lot of holes in the defense.
02:26But they'll get better.
02:28I know they're going to go back on the film.
02:29They could be tighter in coverage at times and in certain situations.
02:33But overall, for the first game, when no one expected them to be in it,
02:36you got to get those guys credit.
02:38You know, you got to get credit where credit is due.
02:39What do you think is more likely?
02:41The Patriots go to 1-2 or 3-0?
02:43They beat, do you think it's more likely they're able to beat the Seahawks and Jets?
02:46Or do you think it's more likely they lose both of those games?
02:49I think they'll beat the Seahawks.
02:51We'll see how the Jets play next because I've seen something in the Jets.
02:55Maybe they can take advantage of that and run the ball because they have a defense.
02:59They can get after the quarterback.
03:00So I don't know how the protection is.
03:02But I really do think that with this momentum that they can go, you know, 2-0.
03:07You know, I really see that.
03:08So we're already halfway to what, after this week, to what the predictions are,
03:13what Vegas says the Patriots are going to be.
03:16Did you listen to Gerard Mayo yesterday with us at all?
03:18No, I didn't.
03:19Because he was, I found it very reassuring that he said, you know,
03:23we can't get too overhyped over that win.
03:25You know, it was week one.
03:27It wasn't pretty.
03:28No, no.
03:28And he said that they still have a lot to work on.
03:30But my biggest takeaway was that they were able to get it done on the road.
03:34So now they come home.
03:35They've got Seattle coming to them.
03:36Different game week.
03:37Will that be easier for them in front of?
03:40I think it will be easier for them because they got a win under their belt.
03:43And right now, what do they have to lose?
03:46Because everyone is expecting them to lose every game.
03:49So there's really no pressure when it comes to the outside where all the pressure
03:52is what you have amongst your teammates and yourself, you know, to go out there and perform.
03:56So I think they're going to come out ready to rock and roll and looking forward to proving
04:01that all the experts wrong about this is the type of team that we are.
04:05And I think, again, I still think they're going to go at least 500.
04:09What did you see?
04:10What did you see from Jacoby Bursett?
04:12He's a great game manager.
04:15Like I said, no touchdown passes, you know, was not even 200 yards.
04:20But when you can rely on the defense in the running game, he did what he was supposed to do.
04:25They didn't ask him to put the game in his hands.
04:27It's going to be interesting when he has to put the game in his hands.
04:30We can have a better assessment of what Jacoby Bursett is, you know,
04:34and I think that's where all the criticisms and the praise is going to come when you have
04:40to go out there and win the game.
04:41If you go out there and win the game, when asked to win the game,
04:45you probably won't be hearing nothing about Drake May.
04:47But if you go out there and stink up the joint, now everybody's going to start calling,
04:51hey man, bring the young guy in, you know what I mean?
04:53So he still has to perform, but he hasn't had to in the first game.
04:58Right. And that's ultimately going to be the biggest thing.
05:00Seattle, you know, they're a solid team.
05:03They're going to run the ball with Kenneth Walker III.
05:05I know he's banged up a little bit, but it's going to be when the game gets to the point where
05:12maybe you're down 14-3 and you have to throw the football.
05:16What can Jacoby Bursett do?
05:18For me, that's the biggest thing that I'm waiting for because based off of his performance,
05:23I mean, like those are high school numbers.
05:25Well, you brought it up earlier and said that Hunter Henry bailed him out.
05:28Yeah.
05:29The result would have been different.
05:31So imagine he throws that interception, right?
05:34And you lose this game and your defense plays good.
05:37We sitting here going, all right, when's Drake May getting in there?
05:42Yeah.
05:43So just from one, or even if I can't remember, it might've been Jonathan Jones,
05:48who makes the play on the tight end, who knocks the ball out when they're going in to score.
05:52And we sit there and go, oh, that's that one play right there on the fumble from Cardona.
05:57That was Duggar, Duggar knocked the ball out.
05:58Duggar, sorry about that.
06:00Right.
06:00So he knocks the ball where we're sitting there and going, okay, the deep played good,
06:05but the offense ran the football, but they can't throw.
06:08We're going to sit there and go, well, when do we think you see Drake May?
06:12Because based on everything else, good defense, you can run the football.
06:17Now we just need a quarterback that has-
06:1816 points isn't going to get it done week to week.
06:22And we've seen that here for the past couple of years where we go, the defense looks good,
06:25but Matt Jones offensively just can't get it done.
06:29And so now those are going to be the biggest questions that I think we're going to ask
06:34ourselves in the next couple of weeks, even if they are like squeaking out wins here and there,
06:39it's going to be like, well, what happens when you got to throw the football?
06:42Exactly.
06:43But, and this also says, okay, who do they have on the outside?
06:45Who is he throwing the ball to?
06:47I mean, you tell me somebody that scares you with the Patriots as far as receiver.
06:52You know what I mean?
06:52I don't think any decent DB is looking at it as like, oh, I got to get ready or circling
06:57the Patriots.
06:58If anything, you're circling the Patriots saying, oh, I'm going to make a play.
07:01You ain't worrying about it.
07:03Circling is like, okay, I got to study it harder this week because I'm playing against,
07:06you know, Marvin Harrison, you know, Randy Mars, you know, things like that.
07:10Oh, Gerard Mayo said yesterday on this show, they're always going to be a run team,
07:14run first and foremost, and go ahead and try to stop us.
07:17So that's.
07:18Well, that'll only take you so far because defensively, Ty will tell you this.
07:22If you know, if you're a team like the Patriots and Ty's the defensive coordinator,
07:27he's probably saying stack the box and make Jacobi.
07:30Cincinnati most likely knew they were going to run the ball a lot.
07:34I mean, they weren't able to stop it.
07:35And that's, that's true.
07:36And, you know, and I just don't understand how you don't always have a free rusher and
07:40saying you got to beat me with Jacobi Berset.
07:43Well, exactly.
07:44And Gerard said that Romandre was tired by the end of it.
07:47He had lost him by the end of it.
07:49Talk to me week five.
07:50Imagine how tired he's going to be then.
07:52Right?
07:52Eventually you're going to have to put the game in the quarterback's hands and tell
07:58them to go win it.
07:58Because like you said, they're going to stack the box.
08:02Okay.
08:02Once I stack the box, you're going to have opportunities on the outside.
08:06My fear is no one on the outside is going to be able to make the play.
08:10You know, I would have loved to see them get Brandon Iuka.
08:12They offered him a lot of money, but he chose to stay.
08:14It's everything, but you need somebody, you know, it ain't like you have all the
08:18protection and you have a time ready to make those decisions.
08:21And you don't have to have a pro bowl receiver.
08:24You don't have to have a big receiver.
08:26As soon as you get a big receiver, like a Randy Moss, you see what Tom Brady was able
08:29to do, but that's a whole different category.
08:32You need somebody to make that quarterback better right now.
08:35And I don't think that they have that on the outside, at least not right now.
08:38And I don't know.
08:39And it's tough to see what the kid Jalen Polk is.
08:42He's your, he's your second round pick at top second round pick.
08:46And we've seen what, you know, some of these wide receivers can be productive.
08:50You know, there's Garrett Wilson was productive his rookie year.
08:53There's plenty of receivers that are productive.
08:55They're a rookie year.
08:56We saw it with a second rounders and Debo Samuel and the guy you're getting ready to
09:00see this Sunday and DK Metcalf.
09:03So is it, you have a pretty good receiver, but you don't have a quarterback to get him
09:08the football.
09:09And all the receivers, you name, they had a quarterback, you know, playing like Russell
09:12Wilson.
09:12He's playing at a pro bowl level at the time he was Russell Wilson.
09:15So yes, look, you have Aaron Rodgers.
09:18You have all these quarterbacks that can get you the ball that's giving you the placement
09:21that's working with you.
09:22But when you have someone not as seasoned and playing spot duty like that, like he has
09:28throughout his career, and like I said, I'm not saying anything negative against Jacob
09:32percent, but he's not in the same ballpark as those other guys.
09:35And when you're talking about quarterback play, are you giving Aaron Rodgers a pass
09:39based on what you saw last night?
09:41Because he hasn't played in a year.
09:43You know what?
09:45He's going to be a little rusty.
09:46I mean, regardless of the experience that he has, you still have to go out there and
09:50play football.
09:50So he threw some passes out.
09:53I was like, oh, that's old Aaron right there.
09:55You know what I mean?
09:55He was able to, you know, put it in there like that, but replay or whatever.
10:00Yeah, exactly.
10:00But I mean, just his ball placement, you know, and the zip that he has on the ball, you give
10:05him another, you know, a couple of weeks.
10:07He's going to be ready to rock and roll, but you're going to be rusty.
10:09I don't care how good you are.
10:12When Michael Jordan left the game, the greatest of all time, he came back.
10:15He wasn't the same Michael Jordan.
10:17You know what I mean?
10:18So you got to think about this game and everyone's prepared.
10:22You have to continue to play the game.
10:24I mean, did he look, he looked 40 years old last night.
10:28I mean, we saw a quarterback play into his mid forties and we thought, oh, that's the
10:33new normal.
10:33It's not easy.
10:34No, no.
10:36And what Aaron Rodgers looks is he looks frail.
10:39Like it felt like Tom got older, but he got stronger.
10:43Aaron Rodgers looked like thin, like gaunt.
10:46Well, you got to understand Aaron, though, the thing about Aaron Rodgers, that's going
10:49to take him some time.
10:50He's coming back off an Achilles, right?
10:52That's like the one of the worst injuries you can have as a football player that it
10:56just seems like it takes forever.
10:57And at that age, it's going to be he.
11:00So he not only does he have to knock the rust off, like Ty said, he now has to get over
11:04the mental hump of like, all right, my Achilles is fine.
11:08My Achilles is fine.
11:09My Achilles is telling himself.
11:10Greg Wickey does mental humps.
11:12I've never I've never dealt with like a serious injury like that.
11:19But but I know played with guys that I have that mentally you got to get over like it's
11:25fine.
11:26You're not going to re injure it, right?
11:27I mean, it's very hard because you still feel it.
11:30Any little thing that you might normally feel when you feel it in that injury, it's going
11:34to play on you a little bit.
11:35When that when I broke my foot just coming back off to any little thing that I felt that
11:40was not perfect, it played on me.
11:44You know what I mean?
11:44As far as how I'm going to break and how I'm going to move things like that.
11:47So, I mean, Aaron Rodgers, the difference between him and Tom Brady, when Tom went down
11:52there, you know, he made sure he brought his security blanket.
11:54He going to get grump.
11:56When Aaron is in New York, he really has nobody.
11:58You take like Lazard.
12:00That's not the same.
12:01He's got to kick out Wilson, who's good.
12:03Exactly.
12:03But you still have to get to play with him.
12:06Right.
12:06Soon as you get to play, you only got to play one game and you're out.
12:09So you're starting all over again.
12:11So Aaron is coming into a totally different situation than where Tom went into.
12:16You know what I mean?
12:17They had a set team.
12:18All they needed was a quarterback.
12:20Right.
12:20New York needed a little more than just a quarterback.
12:22Everybody say that's all they need is a quarterback.
12:25I call that a bunch of crap.
12:26They needed more than just Aaron Rodgers.
12:28And I think that they loaded up and they got some more talent.
12:31Now let's put it together.
12:32But you can't expect Aaron Rodgers to be Aaron Rodgers.
12:34Right.
12:35Right now.
12:36Yeah, I think it's more about the defense.
12:38You still think that's a top five defense?
12:40I think so.
12:41Even though they did get run all over, though.
12:44They got ran all over.
12:48Maybe I'll chalk this one up to San Fran's a good football team.
12:52Shanahan, and I know Shime loves him.
12:54Shanahan does a great job with dialing up plays.
12:57Because this kid, Jordan Mason, came out of nowhere and he looked legit.
13:04And the holes and everything that they were able to open up for him.
13:08So I'll give them a pass in week one because it is a very good 49ers team.
13:13But my expectations are with the Jets defense, I think they were like top five last year.
13:18You know, that's where you expect them to be.
13:20So let's see what they do.
13:22They got Tennessee this week.
13:24Then we'll see them in a couple of weeks.
13:25Let's see what they look like if they clean up some of them holes.
