Boomer Esiason joins!
How did Esiason think Brissett looked? Is this Patriots defense better than people thought? Are the Bengals just traditionally a slow starting team?
Transcript
00:00Hey Boomer, good morning.
00:01Hey, good morning.
00:02What's going on?
00:03You guys happy this morning?
00:05The football world has awakened shock this morning.
00:09That's what's going on.
00:10Yeah, I'll tell you.
00:11Anybody in a survivor pool, I would tell you that their season's already over, just like
00:14the Giants.
00:15Yeah, that would be my season.
00:19Wiggy bet against the past.
00:20Yeah, I picked Cincinnati.
00:21Oh, Wiggy.
00:22Oh my God.
00:23Wiggy, Wiggy, Wiggy, Wiggy.
00:24Come on, Boomer.
00:26You knew that, going into this game, did you expect the Patriots to do what they did?
00:32No, of course not, but it's so obvious not to take them in this situation, especially
00:39with the Bengals, the way they start the season, and this is becoming habitual under Zack Taylor,
00:45their head coach.
00:46They get off these slow starts, and it takes a while for Joe Burrow to get going, and man,
00:51I'll tell you what.
00:52I got to say that their defense played great yesterday, and the turnovers, obviously not
00:58turning the ball over, and then getting two turnovers, especially where the Patriots got
01:02those turnovers, was the big plays of the game, but I know Jacoby wasn't great.
01:10Watching him, it was like, it wasn't a lot of fun, but he didn't turn it over, man, and
01:17that is so key in today's NFL, and listen, I'm happy for Coach Mayo.
01:23He gets his first win, unexpectedly, in a way that Bill Belichick used to win games
01:28like this.
01:30They could be undermanned, they could be missing players, but somehow, someway, they just have
01:34enough to win the game.
01:36They should celebrate, they should be excited, but I don't necessarily know how long this
01:40can last.
01:41Well, that's, I mean, if the defense plays like it did, and then you just run the football,
01:48they can do some damage.
01:50Yeah, well, just running the football, that's 25 times for Ramondre Stevenson yesterday,
01:57so if he does that every game, he ain't gonna be around much longer, I can tell you that.
02:02So I'm sure he's beat up, but I'm sure he's also feeling pretty good about his performance
02:08yesterday.
02:09He had the best running back performance in the league, and this is exactly the formula
02:13that they need to win.
02:16You just wonder, as they move on, and whenever they decide to put Drake May in the lineup
02:23is going to be the big question.
02:25And the other thing that stood out yesterday, if you ask me, is Keon White stood out.
02:30He was replacing Matt Judon.
02:33I think they knew internally what they had, but they weren't sure until you actually see
02:38it for real, and he had a hell of a day yesterday.
02:41He was a menace for the Patriots defense.
02:43Boomer, you talk about celebrating now, but looking at all those players after the win,
02:47they were so excited for Mayo.
02:50As a former player, how much can you really read into that?
02:53Can Gerard Mayo get extra wins because these guys are showing up for him?
02:58Could that be a difference between what we saw last season with Bill and this season
03:01with Mayo?
03:02Yeah, I know internally it probably felt toxic with Bill and Robert Kraft and some of the
03:09things that were going on there, and sometimes you just need to release the pressure cooker.
03:14And it feels that way right now with the Patriots, and it feels that the players really appreciate
03:20kind of the new way of doing things, but they still probably do a lot of the things that
03:24they used to do under Bill Belichick.
03:27It's just not as intense.
03:29But look, the way that they played yesterday defensively, I'm sure he was talking to his
03:35team all week long that nobody in the NFL, nobody thinks you can win.
03:40That whole mental psychology of we are the underdogs and let's go out there and prove
03:45that we can win against a team like this, that everybody thinks is going to the Super
03:49Bowl or has a good chance of going to the Super Bowl.
03:52So it's a real thing, Courtney.
03:54There's no question about it.
03:55The players obviously appreciate him.
03:57They appreciate the way that he went about preparing them for this particular game.
04:02And honestly, you know, the decision to play Jacoby Brissett, while it wasn't pretty and
04:06there weren't a lot of yards, there were very few explosive plays.
04:10The fact of the matter is he steadied the ship.
04:13He didn't turn the ball over.
04:15And maybe as Drake May is standing there watching, believe it or not, he is learning.
04:20He's watching how quickly the game is played, all the different adjustments that have to
04:23be made on the fly.
04:25And you know, eventually he'll get on the field.
04:28It's just that I think Coach Mayo knows exactly what he was doing and it certainly bore itself
04:34out with the victory.
04:35Well, Boomer, that's the thing, eventually, when is eventually the offensive line only
04:39gives up one sack.
04:40They look pretty good.
04:41Like you said, it looks like a team that wants to run the football, play good defense, and
04:45they want to dink and dunk.
04:46So that doesn't take a lot for a rookie quarterback when it comes to just short passes.
04:51When is that, in your opinion, or when would you do that?
04:55When would you put Drake May in?
04:56Because that's what we all want to see.
04:57All right, so you got the Seahawks next at home, the home opener.
05:01I don't necessarily know you're playing them there.
05:03You got at the Jets and at the 49ers and then the Dolphins and Texans.
05:08I mean, that's who's who in the NFL right there.
05:11Somewhere in there, he's going to end up playing.
05:14If not for just to get some playing time, maybe at the end of one of these games.
05:19I don't necessarily know that Jacoby is going to make it through all these games.
05:23I mean, that's another part of this equation.
05:26He'll get in there, Jermaine, sooner or later.
05:29I just don't know which game or when it's going to happen or
05:33whether or not Jacoby's going to be able to last through these games.
05:36He does have a history of injury, hopefully not a serious injury,
05:39maybe a twisted ankle or something like that.
05:41And then we'll see Drake May, but
05:42I don't necessarily know that there's any reason to rush.
05:45And the one thing I will say, when they get to Patriot Place this morning,
05:48there's going to be a big sigh of relief that they won their first game.
05:53The first game, as you remember, Jermaine, for
05:55all of us who played, is such a big game.
05:58And when you win it, you just feel enthused and you can't wait to get to work.
06:02And when you lose, and if you lose kind of like the way the Giants lost yesterday,
06:06or the way the Commanders lost yesterday, or the way the Titans lost yesterday,
06:10it's miserable showing up to work because the questions start mounting,
06:14the fans start ratcheting up the pressure.
06:17So this is a great day for the Patriots and for Jordan Mayo.
06:22You mentioned miserable coming to work, Boomer.
06:25You also said potentially toxic last year with the demise of
06:29the relationship of Belichick and Kraft.
06:31From my perspective, yesterday showed that if you stop trying to settle scores
06:36with your coaching staff and worry about the actual scoreboard,
06:41this team wasn't as awful as it was under Bill Belichick.
06:45Am I wrong to read it that way?
06:47Well, for one game at least.
06:48I mean, and the player reaction, as Courtney pointed out,
06:51is tells you all you need to know.
06:53I mean, that tells you a lot.
06:56It tells you a lot that there was internal pressure coming from every which way.
07:00And look, Coach Belichick is the greatest coach in NFL history in my eyes.
07:05And sometimes things go stale.
07:06Sometimes when you start losing, people start looking at you in a different way.
07:11He had three years without Tom Brady.
07:13It didn't go well.
07:14They tried with Mac Jones.
07:16That failed.
07:17And now all of a sudden they win a game that nobody thought they were going to win.
07:20It's gonna feel different.
07:22And I do believe that there was a genuine appreciation for the coach in this case.
07:28And you can see it and you can hear it in the players post game interviews.
07:32I mean, they love their coach and hopefully that will continue.
07:36This is a long season.
07:37It's week one and a lot of crazy things happen in week one.
07:40And this happens to be probably one of the crazier things that happened week one,
07:44that the Patriots won on the road against a potential Super Bowl team.
07:48Dak Prescott got his $240 million.
07:52Thanks for reminding me.
07:55They went on the road and that Browns offense basically got booed off the field
08:00at the end of the first half yesterday, Boomer.
08:03Yep, two quarterbacks under a lot of fire from their home fans,
08:07Deshaun Watson and Daniel Jones.
08:09And Deshaun Watson looked lost yesterday.
08:13And I'm thinking that Tom Brady had to have a hell of a time trying to do this
08:17game because Deshaun Watson doesn't play the game the way the game is supposed to
08:21be played.
08:22Doesn't play the game the way that Tom Brady played the game.
08:25And I was just thinking as I was listening to Brady as everybody else was.
08:29I think he was cautious in the beginning.
08:32It was a little awkward in the beginning, but
08:33then he finally found his sea legs, I thought, as the game wore on.
08:37But he's not gonna be critical, I don't think just yet.
08:41Because yesterday, Deshaun Watson was awful.
08:44I mean, god awful.
08:45And if you run out of the pocket every freaking time it feels like,
08:49that's not the way to play quarterback in the NFL.
08:51And just think about how the way Tom played it.
08:54He sat in the pocket, and if somebody wasn't open, he threw it away.
08:57If somebody needed a ball low and away, he threw it low and away.
09:01If somebody needed it low and in, he'd throw it low and in.
09:03Or if he was gonna throw it high,
09:05he was gonna try to protect his receiver down the sideline.
09:08Deshaun Watson did none of that.
09:09I mean, he was just god awful.
09:12And I didn't hear a lot of criticism coming from,
09:16I was wondering how he was gonna handle some of this stuff.
09:20And I think right now it's a little bit cautious, but
09:22as they find their sea legs, they're gonna get better and better and better.
09:25And it's gonna be more of a casual kind of conversation,
09:30as opposed to an interview during the game.
09:32But yeah, I thought Tom Brady did good, I just thought Deshaun Watson was awful.
09:38Yeah, I mean, the cesspool that is Twitter might not agree with you.
09:43It was the opportunity for everybody that's been waiting to dunk on Brady,
09:46to find something he's bad at, and have a massive party.
09:49That's basically- Yeah, listen,
09:51I talked to a bunch of my buddies yesterday, huge football fans.
09:56And we were talking about Brady as the game was going on.
10:00It was a little awkward in the beginning, just because I'm sure he was nervous.
10:03I mean, he is a human being.
10:04I know he's godlike in certain areas, but I mean, it's gonna take him a while.
10:08And it's funny, when he called Chris Collinsworth up,
10:11I think Chris Collinsworth said, you sure you wanna do this?
10:13And the reason for that is because exactly what you're talking about.
10:18There's going to be criticism regardless.
10:22There are people that love him, there are people that hate him.
10:25But I give him a lot of credit because he didn't have to do this.
10:27He could do what the Mannings are doing.
10:29The Mannings basically are insulated because you only watch the Manning cast
10:34because you love the Mannings.
10:35If you don't wanna watch the Manning cast, then you watch Joe and Troy.
10:39So it's a minefield broadcasting, and Tom Brady has stepped into it.
10:45So welcome to the real world.
10:47Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels, and Bo Nix,
10:50what were your first impressions of the quarterbacks?
10:54Yeah, exactly what I thought, up and down.
10:56I mean, Jaden was all over the place.
10:59Anthony Richardson was all over the place.
11:01He was a second man, but he threw a 60 yard, I mean, that was a howitzer that he
11:06threw for a touchdown in that game against Jacksonville.
11:09But I thought all the young quarterbacks struggled,
11:11which you would expect.
11:13The one that looked probably the most solid out of the three of them,
11:17I would give that to Bo Nix.
11:19Caleb Williams really didn't do too much.
11:20Their defense did a lot of that against the Titans.
11:24Jaden Daniels is gonna be a really good player.
11:28He's gotta stop running and putting his shoulder down, or he'll be this year's
11:32version of Anthony Richardson and only make it through about two or three games.
11:37But he definitely has, like, wow talent.
11:40I mean, he jumps off the page at you when you watch him.
11:43So I think it's only gonna get better for those guys.
11:46And the good thing for Chicago is they won a game where Caleb Williams did not
11:50play well, but their defense basically beat the hell out of the Titans,
11:54especially in the second half.
11:55So that's good news for Chicago.
11:57All right, time now for the McFarland Energy Question of the Week.
12:01McFarland, the region's most dependable provider of home heating,
12:06oil delivery, and expert HVAC services.
12:10And Wiggy has the question.
12:12Boomer, when you start to, like, kind of look at the AFC and the NFC based on
12:16their conference, doesn't it seem like, you know, and I know it's still early to
12:20tell, but it seems like Baltimore and Kansas City kind of a class ahead of
12:24everybody else.
12:25And in the NFC, I kind of feel like Dallas and Philly looks that way.
12:30You know, Green Bay, obviously, they're in a position now where they're gonna lose
12:32Jordan Love for a few weeks.
12:34What's your take after week one?
12:35I know it's early here, but what's your take as far as who are the teams that you
12:39feel like might be the superior teams coming out of both of the conferences?
12:43I'll tell you what, Detroit last night looked really good,
12:46especially at home.
12:47Indoors, they're gonna be a bitch to beat in that building,
12:50especially with the way that their defense played last night.
12:52They were all over Matthew Stafford.
12:54So I would throw them in that mix as well.
12:57Kansas City, of course.
12:59Baltimore's gonna be tough.
13:00You know, probably one of the biggest winners and one of the biggest losers
13:03yesterday were the Pittsburgh Steelers.
13:06That was Steeler football, wasn't pretty.
13:08Justin Fields was okay, but Kirk Cousins got his ass kicked.
13:12And a couple more weeks like that, people are gonna be screaming for
13:15Michael Pennix Jr. down there.
13:17And that's the last thing that Raheem Morris and the Atlanta Falcons want.
13:21So it was a great weekend for the AFC East.
13:25We'll see if that continues tonight with the Jets at the 49ers.
13:28But this is a long season, Jermaine.
13:31You and I both know that it's overreaction city week one.
13:34And there's gonna be a lot of pressure on teams to come back and
13:38win next week, especially here in New York when it comes to the Giants.
13:41I mean, this was like one of the worst situations that Brian D'Abel can find
13:47himself in because now all of a sudden, after this flatlined offensive game and
13:52much maligned offensive quarterback, you're gonna get calls for D'Abel's job.
13:58And it's just gonna get uglier and
14:00uglier until they turn this thing around, if they can turn it around.
14:03So overreaction wise, you're saying we shouldn't start planning a duck boat
14:07parade?
14:08No, not yet, not yet.
14:10Now listen, if they go 7-0 and they beat these teams on the schedule,
14:13I'll be the first guy in that parade.
14:16We'll be leading it.
14:18Maybe Jermaine can lead cuz he picked the Bengals to beat the Patriots yesterday.
14:23Hey, hey, hey.
14:24We're gonna need a bigger boat.
14:25Yeah, it's all right.
14:26Boomer, speaking of big, I remain and continue to be so
14:30impressed by Patrick Mahomes in everything he does.
14:34It's hard not to be.
14:36And it's hard not to see the contrast in all of his quote rivals
14:40winning at the contract negotiation, but losing on the field.
14:45It feels like every day another guy that he's competing against signs a new record
14:48deal while he's just working on winning a three-peat.
14:52Yeah, I think they'll give him a new deal next year.
14:54They'll rip up this deal and
14:55they'll give him a new deal that will reflect the importance of him.
15:00I know he signed a 450 ten year deal.
15:03Actually, he made more money than Tom Brady.
15:05Think about that for a second.
15:06But yeah, they're gonna have to give him a new deal.
15:10This is a $60 million guarantee contract per year for Dak Prescott,
15:15the extension, which is he sets the bar now.
15:19And the bar is gonna have to be eclipsed.
15:20And the only one I think that is prepared to eclipse that would be Patrick Mahomes,
15:26that will be after this season.
15:27I mean, since Patrick Mahomes got there,
15:30I think the worth of the Kansas City Chiefs has probably risen $2.5 billion.
15:36So I think it's time that the Hunt family step up and pay him.
15:41But it won't happen until next year.
15:42Maybe they'll do it in the middle of this year, I'm not sure.
15:45But there's no question that that contract will get redone.
15:48Well, Wiggy and Courtney hate this, but
15:50Kendrick Lamar does nothing for me halftime show wise.
15:53I'm not excited about it at all.
15:55Yeah, I don't know, what was that announcement yesterday?
15:57I mean, he's working with the juicing machine, I didn't get that.
16:01Hey, Jermaine, can you help me with that?
16:03Why is-
16:04It was like there's a special guest that we're waiting on for him.
16:07I mean, maybe that's who we were saying, hey, you gotta be able to run routes.
16:11But I don't mind Kendrick Lamar, I have no issues with him.
16:14No, I have no problem with it.
16:15But I mean, it's like the announcement was a little awkward and
16:19corny and cringeworthy, wasn't it?
16:21Well, people would have known who he was because the camera angle was so
16:25far away and you just don't recognize his voice if you don't know him.
16:28So I bet a lot of people were like, man, what the hell is going on?
16:31Greg walked in saying, I like Kendrick and Lamar.
16:33Exactly, I was like, are there two people or is it one person?
16:37I wasn't sure.
16:39I don't know, it was an awkward deal.
16:41But at the end of the day, it is week one and not everybody's on their game.
16:45All right, Boomer, well, you are, and thanks for joining us this morning.
16:48We'll talk to you next week.
16:50All right, guys, congratulations, enjoy the week.
