00:30Oh, what a right hand by Trinidad.
00:42When Felix Trinidad destroyed veteran IBF welterweight champ Maurice Blocker in less
00:47than six minutes of fighting, many predicted this baby-faced 20-year-old would soon be
00:52boxing's next superstar.
00:53We got a new rising superstar here in Trinidad.
00:59For the last three years, Trinidad has impressively defended his title against a succession of
01:05number one-ranked contenders, veteran champions, and undefeated challengers.
01:11But to truly fulfill his potential, he must unify the welterweight titles by beating Cornel
01:17Whitaker and Ike Corte, or move up in weight to meet new challenges.
01:24To make 1996 the year he attains his goals and realizes his promise, he must first get
01:30by Philadelphia's Rocket Rodney Moore.
01:33A former DJ, Moore is hoping to catapult himself to the top of the boxing charts with an upset
01:39win.
01:40It's Trinidad versus Moore for the IBF welterweight title.
01:43Plus, trying to fight his way back into the ranks of boxing royalty, hard-hitting Tommy
01:49the Duke Morrison meets Arthur Weathers in a 10-round heavyweight bout.
01:54And making her first appearance on live national television, 135-pound female fighting sensation
02:01Christy Martin continues her pursuit in the lightweight division.
02:06It's coming up live from the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, next on Showtime
02:15Championship Boxing.
02:33Welcome to the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada, where tonight Showtime Championship
02:38Boxing presents a current welterweight champion and, for the first time on network television,
02:44a leading female contender.
02:49Hello again, everybody.
02:50I'm Steve Albert.
02:51We're getting ready for an evening that promises to be both unusual and exciting.
02:54But first, we must open tonight's telecast on a somber note.
02:58We at Showtime are deeply saddened by the untimely death of Dan Duva, one of the so-called
03:03Big Three promoters of boxing, along with Don King and Bob Arum.
03:07Dan died last week at the age of 44 after a year-long battle with cancer.
03:12He began promoting local boxing matches in an ice rink in New Jersey and went on to promote
03:16over a hundred world title fights featuring some of the biggest names and brightest stars
03:20of the sport.
03:21His crowding achievement, perhaps, taking a light heavyweight bronze medalist at the
03:251984 Olympics by the name of Evander Holyfield to the undisputed heavyweight championship
03:30of the world.
03:31Dan and his family are a part of the history of Showtime Championship Boxing, and our heartfelt
03:35condolences go out to his father, Lou, his wife, Kathy, their children, Nicole, Lisa,
03:39and Brian, and the entire Duva family.
03:42Joining me now at ringside, the fight doctor, Ferdie Pacheco.
03:45And Ferdie, I know you shared many experiences with Dan, first at NBC, and then here at Showtime.
03:50Your thoughts on his passing?
03:51Well, I think we've lost part of the future of boxing with Dan.
03:54Dan was a visionary.
03:55He looked ahead of time.
03:56He was trying to get boxing to understand we have an obligation to boxers.
04:01And he set up Trust Fund for the Children, and he was doing all kind of wonderful things.
04:05But I remember him differently.
04:07He came to NBC.
04:08I had just gotten started at NBC, and I was looking for new fights.
04:12He comes up with a list of Olympic fighters that weren't going to go to the Olympics,
04:15and a bright young guy that was selling out total war.
04:18Undefeated, white, could talk like a dream.
04:19His name was Bobby Chess.
04:21We looked at the tape.
04:22We said, hey, let's go with him.
04:23Let's go with all of these guys.
04:25And they developed into world champions, and we went on a run that was kind of like the
04:29alley circus.
04:30It was a Duva circus.
04:31It was all relatives, and pizzas, and fun, wherever we went.
04:34We kept it up until just now.
04:36So I'm left with one thing.
04:39All of us in boxing have lost part of our future.
04:42All right.
04:43And also working with us tonight is former two-time champion Bobby Chess.
04:46And Bobby, you and Dan go back a long way.
04:48What is the professional legacy of Dan Duva?
04:51Well, the professional legacy, Steve, goes back even further than myself.
04:54The entire Duva family has always had big plans and dreams in the professional boxing
04:58world, and Dan was a huge part of those dreams.
05:00Dan with his father, Lou, and the rest of his family helped countless numbers of young
05:04fighters on their march toward championship status.
05:06Many of those fighters went on to win world championships, and not in short, due to Dan
05:11Duva.
05:12Excuse me.
05:13Dan was like a father and a brother with Lou, but I'll tell you what, he was a family man
05:18first, but a unique individual in boxing, and no one can deny his contributions, not
05:22only to my career, but to all the careers of the people who came out of the main events
05:25table.
05:26He will be dearly missed.
05:27All right, Bobby.
05:28On a personal note, Dan allowed yours truly a first shot into boxing, broadcasting a series
05:32called Super Fights of the Month in the early 80s.
05:34I thank him for a wonderful indoctrination into the world of boxing.
05:39So tonight, we dedicate this telecast to a man who dedicated his life to boxing.
05:43We pay tribute, and we say goodbye to Dan Duva.
05:50And now, onto the situation at hand.
05:52In a shocking development earlier today, former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison, who
05:57was scheduled to fight Arthur Weathers on tonight's fight card, was suspended by the
06:01Nevada State Athletic Commission.
06:03Showtime Championship Boxing will report on this developing situation as it unfolds this
06:08evening, and we will attempt to get an interview later tonight with the commission's executive
06:12director, Mark Ratner.
06:14As we promised you, this evening will be both unusual and exciting.
06:18But now, let's get to tonight's action.
06:20Our headline attraction, the phenomenal Felix Tito Trinidad.
06:24Fight fans want to see him challenge the Pernell Whitakers, the Terry Norrises, the Ike Cortez,
06:28and the Frankie Randles.
06:29Perhaps a unification of the welterweight division.
06:32What about the way Trinidad has been handled in his professional career?
06:36I'd say it's almost exemplary.
06:37He started out in the second fight, he was already on television.
06:40He was being called the next superstar by five or six fights.
06:44Showtime picked him up, showed him with a succession of difficult fights, escalating
06:48up in quality until he won the championship, and then had these great fights with Uri Boy
06:52Campos and so forth.
06:53I think he's been handled masterfully, and he's at the point where he can break through
06:57the superstardom if he beats some of those names that we saw up there a moment ago, and
07:02that's no easy task.
07:03Well, Rockin' Rodney Moore has fought two title fights, but both in the junior welterweight
07:07division.
07:08This is his first championship fight as a welterweight.
07:10Bobby, will the extra pounds be a factor?
07:12Steve, the extra pounds are always a factor, and the more the pounds, sometimes the bigger
07:16the factor.
07:17Also a big factor here is that Tito Trinidad can really punch and is a big welterweight.
07:21He's a borderline junior middleweight.
07:24The little man coming up usually loses to the big man because he's not comfortable in
07:27that area.
07:28The power, though, that is the single biggest asset to a big man, and Tito Trinidad is not
07:32just good.
07:33He's borderline great.
07:34So, certainly it's a big factor, maybe the biggest factor tonight, but overall, the town
07:37level, Tito Trinidad, just too much.
07:39All right, let us take you backstage into the dressing room of the IBF welterweight
07:43champion, Felix Trinidad, the 23-year-old budding superstar from Cubialto, Puerto Rico,
07:49undefeated at 27-0 with 23 knockouts, and tonight he makes his 8th defense of the title.
07:55He has a tendency to get lazy against lesser caliber fighters.
07:58We'll see what Felix is really made of against a tough Philly fighter.
08:04And let's duck in behind the scenes and check out the challenger, 30-year-old Rockin' Rodney
08:08Moore, the IBF's number 8 contender.
08:11Moore comes in with a record of 37-9-2 with 19 KOs.
08:16So coming up later, our main event of the night, Trinidad versus Moore.
08:23So here at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, we're closing in on the first of our
08:27doubleheader card, and for starters, a first on Showtime, as two women will showcase their
08:32boxing skills.
08:33Christy Martin, a three-time world champion of women's professional boxing, will take
08:38on Slammin' Sue Chase.
08:43Tonight we present Christy Martin, a substitute schoolteacher who is also a student of the
08:48sweet science.
08:49Looks can be deceiving.
08:50This 5'4 Dynamo from Mullins, West Virginia, packs a powerful punch.
08:54She's knocked out 13 of her 36 opponents in the first round.
08:59Tonight she makes her national television debut.
09:02When I get someone hurt in a fight, I'm just thinking, I just want to get this over.
09:14I want to end it as fast as possible and as spectacularly as possible.
09:19Pump the crowd up again, and then in turn, that's just going to excite me.
09:23Something definitely takes over.
09:24I really can't put my finger on it, but something happens.
09:28Most boxing people, they don't want to come out and see the classic boxers.
09:31They would rather come and see the brawlers, blood on their guts.
09:37I don't know what happens when I walk into the ring.
09:40Physically, I feel, like, so strong, and now you just want to land this one big bomber.
09:47To be honest, I don't know that there's anything that a man can bring to the ring that I can't.
09:54I feel like I can compete with a man on a skill level.
09:59Of course, I'm not as powerful as a man, but yet I bring some power to the ring.
10:05Most women can't take that power.
10:08They can't take those body shots.
10:10You know, if you can hit that liver, it doesn't matter.
10:13They're going to be down and out.
10:15That's something you cannot recover from.
10:17You can shake off the head shots, but the liver shots, no way.
10:24Boxing is something that I'm not trying to change.
10:27I just want Christy Martin to add a little bit to boxing.
10:33I think this is going to be the turning point in my career.
10:37We're looking for a spectacular performance, something that's going to get the entire nation excited.
10:44I don't feel like being a woman fighter that I'm going to get an opportunity again
10:49if I don't have a good performance or if I would lose.
10:53Tonight, being on national television is really the most important point of my career.
11:06As we look at Christy's opponent, Slammin' Sue Chase.
11:09She and Christy breaking new ground by becoming a first-ever female professional boxing duo
11:14to be shown live on national TV in the U.S.
11:17Sue Chase out of Norwalk, Ohio, former Ohio State kickboxing champion.
11:21She has a boxing record of 13, 4, and 2, 8 knockouts.
11:24Christy Martin says that after the fight, Slammin' Sue will be known as Slammed Sue.
11:30And here is 27-year-old Christy Martin in the ring.
11:34She's fought on several major cards, including Tyson McNeely, Tyson Mathis, Chavez Rantle,
11:39and Chavez Rantle, too. She often steals the show.
11:42One of her biggest fans, Mike Tyson.
11:44For Christy and her husband and manager-trainer Jim, this is no gimmick.
11:47It has become a way of life.
11:49You are troubled by the notion, Christy says,
11:51before you prejudge me or the concept, come watch one of my fights.
11:54I promise you'll be back.
11:56Bobby, you've seen Christy fight several times.
11:58How would you characterize her in the ring?
12:00You know, Steve, she's an excellent all-around athlete,
12:02and she seems to have crossed over into the boxing world and mastered the tools.
12:05Not just the basics, but the subtle nuances as well.
12:08When I watched her fight, I didn't know what to expect.
12:10And you know what? Plain as day. She's a good fighter.
12:13And she spars only against men.
12:15Let's check the numbers as we take a look at the tail of the tape.
12:18At 27, Christy Martin, 6 years younger than Sue Chase.
12:21Martin with a 2-inch height advantage.
12:23The reach is almost even. The biggest disparity is in weight,
12:26where Martin is 9 pounds heavier than Chase.
12:28And this is where we really have some problems,
12:31because women's boxing is still in its infant stage in the United States.
12:34Regulations are not what they should be.
12:36So this is blatantly unfair, but due to the lack of women fighters,
12:39they take the fights and thus take the risk.
12:42The rules for this scheduled 6-round fight with 2-minute rounds.
12:4510-point must system. 3 judges will score the fight.
12:48No standing 8 count. The 3 knockdown rules in effect.
12:50Only the referee can stop the fight.
12:52And a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the last round.
12:55If there's an accidental foul before the end of the 3rd round,
12:57the fighter's ruled a no decision.
12:59If it's after the end of the 3rd, they go to the scorecards.
13:03So here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas,
13:06getting ready for a scheduled 6-rounder
13:08featuring 3-time women's professional boxing champion,
13:11Christy Martin.
13:12Let's get the introductions from our ring announcer,

14:34Here is the two-time kickboxing champion of Ohio.

14:47And her opponent across the ring on my left,
14:51fighting out of the red corner in this 6-round attraction,

14:57fighting out of Orlando, Florida,
14:59by way of Mullins, West Virginia.
15:02She weighed in at 135 pounds,
15:04even her fine record includes 32 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws,
15:10with 23 big wins coming by way of knockout.
15:14She is recognized as the women's pound-for-pound boxing champion.
15:18Introducing the coal miner's daughter,
15:21Kristi Martin.
15:26Once again, here's our referee in charge, Joe Cortez.
15:30All right, we went over the rules in the dressing room.
15:33I want a good, clean fight.
15:35Obey my commands at all times.
15:37I want good sportsmanlike conduct, okay?
15:39Shake hands. Good luck to both of you.
15:44Kristi Martin always goes in looking for the knockout.
15:47She says, when I fight, don't go to the bathroom
15:50or go to get a soda.
15:52It's a very unique situation.
15:54We've seen brother accommodations,
15:55father-and-son teams in boxing,
15:57but now husband and wife,
15:59and we have Mike, Jim Martin, in the corner.
16:03The husband, manager, and trainer of Kristi Martin in the pinks
16:06who chase in the black with the gold trim.
16:10Kristi says she's focused on two things,
16:12her ring mechanics and Jim's voice,
16:14and she comes out winging Bobby.
16:16Well, I'll tell you what, these ladies came to fight
16:19They're standing there slugging.
16:21The weight's going to be a factor here.
16:23Kristi Martin got the extra 9 pounds,
16:25but I'll tell you what, slamming Sue Chase,
16:27living up to her reputation of slamming.
16:29A brawl from the opening bell.
16:32Kristi Martin landing.
16:36Oh, there is a straight right to the face of Sue Chase.
16:41And if you notice here,
16:42there's a little bit of a gap there.
16:44There is a straight right to the face of Sue Chase.
16:47And if you notice,
16:48she did something that a lot of professional fighters,
16:50men professional fighters, don't always remember to do.
16:53After she stunned her opponent, left hook to the body.
16:55Very good move.
16:59As Bobby mentioned, Kristi, an excellent all-around athlete,
17:02basketball star in high school,
17:04where she once scored 50 points in the first half
17:07before the coach took her out.
17:10She had to give somebody else a chance to score.
17:13Well, she's not giving Sue Chase much of a chance.
17:16Digging to the ridge, going upstairs.
17:18Combinations to the head.
17:19Kristi Martin showing her entire repertoire.
17:24Heavy right hook to the face of Sue Chase.
17:31I'll tell you what, no one came here to box.
17:33They came here to fight.
17:35Why does she do this?
17:37The crowd excites her.
17:38She loves it.
17:39It's entertainment to Kristi Martin.
17:43And she continues to hammer away.
17:46What an assault here by Martin.
17:49You know, she's a good puncher.
17:51She uses leverage very well.
17:52She turns into her shots.
17:53She pays attention in the gym.
17:55And I was talking to her husband.
17:56He said, I have a lot of my fighters
17:58that I wish they would listen the way she does.
18:03Kristi took up the sport on a dare in college,
18:05entering tough women contests, made some money.
18:08And here she is as a pro.
18:15We've got a special mic on her husband, Jim Martin.
18:18Let's listen in.
18:21You're looking good.
18:23Just keep working off that jab just like you're doing.
18:26That was a good right uppercut right there, okay?
18:29Next time you get inside,
18:30she's right over for a right uppercut and a left hook.
18:34Power jab like you were doing.
18:37I want you jab, jab, right hand.
18:40She can't take it all night.
18:42You just keep your hands up on the inside.
18:44Come off that fucking jab, okay?
18:46And listen up.
18:47When you get on the inside this time,
18:49swap feet.
18:50That chin's hanging right on your shoulder, okay?
18:56It was nonstop action for the first 45 seconds.
18:59Huge punches thrown throughout the round.
19:02This is husband trainer manager Jim Martin,
19:04who says, be first.
19:06And he also says, you can't separate yourself 100%.
19:09He says, if I don't do my job, I'll get her hurt.
19:12Well, you know, you just have to wonder
19:14how a husband sends his wife out there to do battle
19:17and how he can remove himself a whole 90%.
19:20That's just tough.
19:21He says, the only time I wanted her hurt
19:23was the first time I met her.
19:25I tried to get her ribs hurt to get rid of her.
19:27But then when I saw her fight,
19:29I saw the kind of attitude she had.
19:31I'll tell you what.
19:32Left hook by Christy Martin,
19:33but Sue Chase with a lot of heart.
19:35Sue Chase is tough, you know,
19:36but she even looks the part.
19:37She looks like she's been in a couple of brawls
19:39with the kickboxing.
19:40You know, you look at Christy Martin,
19:41you say, here's a nice schoolteacher,
19:43nice, soft, gentle-looking lady.
19:45But I'm sure that she could probably beat up people
19:47if she was still dating.
19:50Well, she went from a boxing ring to a wedding ring
19:53as far as her trainer Jim is concerned.
19:56Combinations to the forehead.
19:58And Sue Chase, I don't know what's keeping her up.
20:00You know, Sue Chase has a good chance.
20:02She has quite some heavy leather,
20:03heavy leather flush.
20:05Jim in the corner told her to use that right uppercut,
20:07which she used very well, but now she stopped.
20:09The right uppercut and left hook was working beautifully.
20:11Whereas Christy Martin has superb technique,
20:14Chase really doesn't have any.
20:16She's just winging punches.
20:27Let's tune into her husband Jim right here.
20:31Come on, Christy, give it time.
20:35There you go.
20:37Break, break out, break out, step back.
20:39You're raising the gun, Joe.
20:41Keep that jab going. There you go.
20:46You know, I talked to Christy one time, too,
20:48and she said they don't have the luxury of any films.
20:51When they see their opponents,
20:52it's usually for the first time the minute they fight.
20:54There's blood from the right eye of Sue Chase,
20:57who's getting pummeled but hanging tough.
20:59Christy Martin continues to flail away.
21:06Martin, always coming forward at the end of round two.
21:29Don't be mad.
21:31Take three deep breaths, please.
21:33Take three deep breaths.
21:35How are we feeling here?
21:36You feel all right?
21:37Yeah, boss.
21:38Remember, I'm here to protect you, okay?
21:40I want you to fight back.
21:41Give me, you know, give me some action.
21:43Can I talk to you?
21:44All right.
21:45Hey, go ahead.
21:46I'm here to protect you.
21:47I know, I understand.
21:48Here we'll see Christy early on with Chase just unloading there
21:50with her right hand there with the hook.
21:51And like I said, Christy puts those punches together beautifully.
21:53She's mastered the art of leverage, too.
21:55She digs in her punches.
21:56Look at her twist and turn, planting her feet.
21:58She throws some nice combinations.
22:00You'll see another look.
22:01Again, the right uppercut coming underneath and the hook up top.
22:04Sue Chase, very tough, very durable, you know, hanging in there
22:08but doesn't have the power, doesn't have the style.
22:10Well, round two, another good one for Christy Martin.
22:14She scored often to the face of Sue Chase,
22:19and she comes back to it here in round three.
22:22She says the biggest problem is in researching her opponents.
22:25You can't find tapes or much background information.
22:27One fight recently, she didn't know an opponent was a southpaw
22:30until the fight began.
22:32It totally threw her off.
22:33She's not being thrown off here.
22:35Joe Cortez has stopped the fight.
22:37You know, I think that was a good stoppage.
22:39This was the kind of fight where somebody who has a tough chin
22:41and a strong will could just get themselves hurt.
22:44She was outclassed, outmatched, and outweighed.
22:48But showing a lot of gumption was Sue Chase who took a beating.
22:53And look at the results.
22:56Happy birthday.
22:57Hi, Mom.
22:58Hi, Dad.
22:59Happy birthday, Mary.
23:01So Christy Martin saying hi to everybody back home.
23:06She now goes to 33-2-2 with 24 knockouts.
23:13After having to watch her fight a few times, Steve,
23:15and I looked at her record and saw there were losses,
23:17I thought to myself, somebody beat her?
23:19Hard to believe.
23:20She did come back to a vent.
23:21She actually lost twice to the same person, came back to a vent.
23:28Well, certainly a good performance for her here tonight,
23:30her TV debut, an excellent one.
23:34So Christy Martin able to celebrate another victory at the age of 27.
23:40She says she's not doing this to promote women's boxing so much
23:43as to promote Christy Martin.
23:48So we'll see where her career goes from here.
23:53Really interesting, as I mentioned, she entered boxing on a lark
23:56while attending Concord College in Athens, West Virginia,
23:58on a basketball scholarship.
24:02And entering the tough women competitions for money,
24:04winning seven of eight contests,
24:06sometimes fighting on consecutive nights.
24:09Let's take a look at some of the action as she stops Sue Chase in round three.
24:14She just kept coming forward, relentless in her attack,
24:17and finally Joe Cortez said, that's enough.
24:20And she went in, he went in to stop the fight.
24:25And from another angle, a whipping right that tagged Sue Chase on the left cheek,
24:30and then she comes barreling in once again,
24:32and at that point Joe Cortez said, enough is enough.
24:36Stopping the fight here in round three.
24:38One more look, and then we'll get some reaction.
24:42Here's that right hook.
24:45Christy Martin, a substitute school teacher.
24:49And that is it.
24:51Showing the elation, jumping on the ropes, and the crowd loves her.
25:00All right, let's get the official time from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
25:07Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of 27 seconds in round number three.
25:13Our referee in charge, Joe Cortez, stops the contest.
25:17The winner by way of technical knockout, the coal miner's daughter, Christy Martin.
25:31So there you have it.
25:33Christy Martin, the coal miner's daughter, going to 33-2-2 with 24 knockouts.
25:40She is concentrating primarily on boxing and putting the teaching aside for the time being.
25:45Coming up next here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas,
25:48it'll be our main event, the IBF Waterweight Championship,
25:51featuring Felix Tito Trinidad and Rockin' Rodney Moore.
25:56And we are ready now for post-fight reaction from our first bout.
25:59Let's go to Bobby Chez in the ring. Bobby?
26:02Okay, thank you, Steve.
26:03Two firsts, a first time for the ladies boxing on television,
26:06and a first time for yours truly to interview a lady in the ring for boxing.
26:09Christy, how'd you like it?
26:11Well, it was just a great opportunity given to us by Showtime and Don King Productions.
26:15We were excited and nervous to come in.
26:17After I settled down a little bit, I put the power together.
26:20You know, you told us during the interviews yesterday, you know,
26:23I'm really nervous, I'm afraid I'm going to do something really stupid.
26:25You didn't do anything stupid.
26:26And as I thought, once the bell rang, everything was okay.
26:28No problems?
26:29No problems.
26:30I think I settled into the fight just as you said I would.
26:33And take it to her. She was just tough.
26:35Some people you can't get out early.
26:36You've got to stick around.
26:37Jim, something I've got to ask you, being a family boxing person,
26:40how do you send your wife out to do battle where she could get hurt?
26:43How does that feel?
26:44Well, she does her job, and that's what she wants to do,
26:47so I'm 100% behind her.
26:48That's how we met.
26:49So I think we're going to stay with it.
26:51Okay, now, obviously the universe of women fighters is maybe somewhat limited.
26:55What's next for her? Where do you go from here? What do you do?
26:57Well, that's sort of in Don King's hands, and we leave everything up to Don King and Showtime.
27:01And that's where we stand. It's up to Don King where we go next.
27:04Okay.
27:05Anything else you want to tell the fans that may be still skeptical about women boxing?
27:09Well, I ask everybody to come in with an open mind.
27:11I hope they did.
27:12I think I gave them at least excitement.
27:14And if you enjoyed it, please let Showtime and Don King know, so I'll be back again.
27:18All right. We wish you continued success.
27:20As we go back to ringside and Steve Albert.
27:23All right. Thank you very much, Bobby.
27:25Well, we promised we'd give you an update on the timing.
