00:00In an era where online books are popular, a little business called Little Shyam stands out for offering bookbinding services.
00:09Bookbinding is the process of fastening loose sheets of paper inside a cover to form a book.
00:16For founder Samsia Jendol, her love affair with bookbinding began when she learned it as an elective subject while studying computer graphic design in New Zealand.
00:27However, working as a graphic artist in an advertising agency left her with little time to indulge in bookbinding.
00:35Still, she harbored the dream of starting her own business someday.
00:41I told myself that before I reach 40, I would like to work on my own and then just build something out of my skill.
00:54And that's exactly what she did. In 2008, she quit her job and started Little Shyam.
01:01Today, she spends her days crafting journals and photo albums in her cozy studio accompanied by her cute Oyen, Kitty.
01:10During a recent visit, FMT Lifestyle witnessed this intriguing process.
01:16First, she individually folds sheets of paper into separate batches called signatures.
01:22Then, she determines the type of stitching she will use, as well as the thread color.
01:28Next, holes are punched into each signature, including the covers, before everything is stitched together.
01:35She then adds finishing touches to the book, an elastic band, a bookmark, and metal corners, before embossing her brand name on it.
01:46Samsia also offers book restoration services. She has even restored damaged books from as far back as the 19th century.
01:56People restore it because it is sentimental value to them.
02:00Some of it, like maybe the cooking book from their mother.
02:06So that is something that touched my heart. That's why I feel, I think I should help.
02:15Indeed, this bookbinder is writing a beautiful chapter in her life story.
02:21I still feel like I wake up every day with purpose.
02:25I still, I don't know, if people say like, book is just a book.
02:31No, for me book is, this is, I feel like I find my purpose by making books.
