00:00And speaking of the Patriots, how about a Patriots Hall of Famer Drew Bledsoe joining us here on Jones and Keefe. How we doing Drew?
00:07Hey, good morning, fellas. What's happening?
00:08Oh, not too much. Just getting ready for week one for the Patriots reacting to last night's opener. Drew Bledsoe
00:15brought to us by FanDuel. They have some cool stuff going on.
00:18So we'll get his thoughts on that and what's available to FanDuel users out there if you want to sign up in a moment.
00:23I'm curious though, Drew,
00:25your thoughts on the Patriots and their handling of a young quarterback. You were thrown into the fire your rookie year.
00:31You played. You got hurt. You came back. The team picked up steam late in 93. You carried that momentum into 94.
00:38How do you think the Patriots are handling
00:41Drake May and his transition to the NFL?
00:44Yeah, you know,
00:46obviously, I'm not there for practice, right? So, you know, this is just philosophical.
00:51But philosophically, I like what they're doing. And partly, you know, it's largely because of Jacoby Percet.
00:57I mean, you know, this guy's a
00:59veteran quarterback. He's played well for a long time.
01:03And I know he's going to be a great mentor for Drake, but he can also help him win games in the short term.
01:08And then philosophically, you know, look, I was thrown right in there.
01:11I felt like I was ready for it. Obviously, Parcells felt like I was ready for it.
01:14But, you know, there's also a benefit to sitting and watching. I didn't learn that until I got hurt my rookie year.
01:20You know, I get to sit and watch three games.
01:22And by just standing on the sidelines and watching for three games,
01:26it seemed like that slowed the whole thing down a little bit. So philosophically, I agree with this.
01:33You know, I also think that Jacoby's
01:36an outstanding quarterback and he may help him win some games in the near term, you know, while they're getting Drake ready.
01:42What are your memories from your NFL debut? Because I went back and looked this up. You,
01:48week one, were taking on Bruce Smith and the defending AFC champion Buffalo Bills and all their
01:54talent on defense. What was that like going into a game against that incredible team?
02:00It was terrifying. I mean, you know, I mean, I'm standing out there. I'm out there playing catch, warming up.
02:08And here comes Bruce Smith
02:10walking down the tunnel. And, you know, five months earlier,
02:14I'd watched these guys in the Super Bowl from my dorm room in Pullman, Washington.
02:19You know, and so I'm like, you know, I don't belong here. This just didn't feel right.
02:24You know, and then Jim Kelly, one of my heroes, comes running out of the tunnel.
02:27He was at least nice enough to,
02:30you know, run by and pat me on the butt and say, hey, good luck, Rick. You know, I was like, oh, well,
02:34thank you, Mr. Kelly. You know, it's like he wanted his autograph at that point.
02:38But it was, it was pitch fitting.
02:41And, you know, but then, you know, like you hear people talk about this all the time,
02:46but then at some point you figure out, okay, we're playing football and I know how to do this.
02:50But it was, you know, the pregame part of it was absolutely terrifying.
02:54When was the moment, maybe it was your rookie year, where you looked around and you said, okay,
02:59I don't necessarily have that self-doubt anymore, what you were just saying.
03:03Now I'm a football player. I'm here. I can do it. I've done it my whole life. When was that moment?
03:07You know, there were a few moments, but one happened in that game.
03:12You know, Bruce Armstrong, our Hall of Fame left tackle,
03:16had just come back off of a devastating knee injury.
03:20And Bruce Smith got the best of him, beat him inside, and he put one of those hits
03:27on me that, you know, used to be legal.
03:30You know, today, you know, he would have been thrown out of the league
03:34for what he did with his helmet right in the middle of my shoulder blades.
03:37But he put that hit on me and then I popped back up and kept playing. I was like, okay, cool.
03:43You know, this is the baddest dude on the planet, but he didn't kill me. So I guess I can keep playing.
03:48I know we're going back a few months now,
03:50but what's the reaction been like since the Tom Brady roast and even since the dynasty?
03:55Because it seems like all of a sudden, Drew, there was this time and now that, you know,
03:59Brady's career is over, we're looking back on it a lot more.
04:02And back to back as Patriots fans, we got a chance to see you a lot.
04:05I think you were really one of the highlights of the dynasty documentary,
04:09which not a lot of fans loved overall, but we enjoyed the parts that you were in.
04:12And then the roast, which seemed like an absolute blast and sort of a cool experience,
04:18I'm sure for a lot of players and ex-players that don't get a chance to do that stuff normally.
04:22But what has that response been like following those two things?
04:25You know, it's been pretty crazy.
04:27You know, the dynasty piece, you know, I think that that was more,
04:31you know, when I would come back to New England, you know, people would mention it and talk about
04:35it and it was, you know, I'm not sure that the rest of the country, you know, watched it as much.
04:39And if they did, it was because they wanted to see the bad parts, as the Patriots fans stated.
04:47But the roast was kind of a phenomenon.
04:51You know, it just seemed like, you know, people out of the woodwork
04:54walking through the airport or some dude riding by on his bicycle or whatever.
04:57The number of people that watched that was pretty astounding.
05:03And then the other thing that I thought was pretty cool coming out of the roast
05:08was that, you know, I thought I was kind of pushing it a little bit.
05:11It turns out I was totally PG compared to what everybody else was doing.
05:15But, you know, all of a sudden it was okay to laugh at stuff again.
05:22You know, it seemed like for such a long period of time,
05:25you know, if you went and made a joke that was over the line, all of a sudden you were cancelled.
05:30And instead, by coming out of this, like, oh, you know what, okay,
05:32we can laugh at this stuff again.
05:33And I think that's, for me personally, I think that's important.
05:37We're going to be able to laugh at the hard stuff.
05:39You're going to be able to laugh at the difficult stuff.
05:42It's a great way to, it's a great therapy.
05:44And I just was so happy that coming out of that, nobody got cancelled for, you know,
05:50making a bad joke.
05:52No, it seemed like unanimously it was loved.
05:54And I'm curious, in the lead up that night, and then be a little bit after,
05:58what was it like kind of working with those comedians?
06:02You have people from two different worlds.
06:03You had sort of one half of the stage with these great players.
06:06Then the other half, you have these great comedians,
06:08and everybody kind of coming together and, you know,
06:10roasting each other throughout the night.
06:11But how was that?
06:13It was really fun.
06:14You know, there was, the comedians across the board were incredibly kind people.
06:19We got to hang out with them more, you know, afterwards.
06:23You know, we did the after party.
06:24And then we went to the comedy store late, late night,
06:28watched Dave Chappelle come on about two in the morning.
06:32That's right.
06:32I was a little, I had to do the Dan Patrick show the next morning at 7am.
06:36I was about as fuzzy as I've ever been.
06:39I don't think we got in bed until about 4.30 in the morning.
06:42But, you know, they're all just incredibly kind.
06:46And Nikki Glaser, who is just a trained killer on stage,
06:50is like one of the kindest people you could ever meet.
06:53It's just so weird.
06:55I told her she's like a Bond villain.
06:57You know, she's just this pretty, super sweet lady
07:02that then is an absolute trained killer when she takes the stage.
07:06It was pretty cool.
07:08So it's similar to Bill Belichick in some ways, Drew.
07:12He, for years, shunned the media, spit at the media.
07:15Now he's not only transitioning to the media,
07:18but he's also on social media.
07:20I don't know if you saw this.
07:20He's on Instagram now.
07:22You have any thoughts on Bill and his second career, if you will?
07:27You know, I'm happy for him.
07:30You know, if he's happy doing this, I'm happy for him.
07:33He's been all football all the time,
07:35you know, working incredible hours for Billy his entire life.
07:41And if he's able to make that switch
07:45and, you know, enjoy some free time
07:48and enjoy doing some of these things
07:51that football coaches miss out on for their whole career,
07:53then I'm really happy for him.
07:55I will be curious, though, because, you know,
07:57we've all seen some of these coaches that,
07:59you know, like Sean Payton, you know,
08:01I thought he was done forever,
08:02just going to ride off into the sunset.
08:04Next thing you know, he's back coaching.
08:05So it's in their blood.
08:06So I'll be very curious to see after a year
08:10whether he's able to settle into that lifestyle
08:13and just enjoy himself
08:14or whether he's going to have to go back in and start coaching.
08:16Well, I was just going to ask you, what do you think?
08:20Yeah, it's a great question.
08:21I'll be curious to see.
08:24I'm guessing that Bill doesn't know right now.
08:26So, you know, he's got to get in and do it for a year
08:30and see if he can turn off that coach switch
08:34or if he's just got to get back in there.
08:36So my guess is he probably doesn't know what that means yet.
08:40But I'm hopeful for him if he can do that
08:43and just kind of chill out and relax a little bit.
08:47I mean, obviously it's still work to be TV,
08:49but that's, you know, that's a few hours a day,
08:51not 100 hours a week.
08:54What are your expectations for Brady in the booth?
08:57I think he's going to do well.
08:58You know, like he's going to prepare.
09:00He's going to do what Tom does.
09:02He's going to work it to death.
09:04And, you know, obviously he knows his football.
09:08I wouldn't be surprised.
09:10You know, I wouldn't be surprised
09:11if there's a little bit of a learning curve
09:14because there's a rhythm to it, right?
09:15It's not just knowledge.
09:16It's, you know, it's almost like you're, you know,
09:20you're in a two-man band
09:22and you got to learn to play together
09:26and make music rather than just dispensing knowledge.
09:29So there'll be a learning curve for him certainly.
09:33But I know that they probably at this point
09:35have called 50 games together,
09:38you know, privately for practice.
09:41So I know he'll do a great job at it.
09:43He'll put in the work and make himself great at it.
09:46Patriots Hall of Famer Drew Bledsoe
09:47is brought to you by FanDuel,
09:49America's only sports book to partner with YouTube
09:51and roll out a new NFL Sunday ticket offer
09:54for fans who want to catch more action at kickoff.
09:56FanDuel customers who bet $5, that's it,
09:59will receive a three-week free trial
10:01for the NFL Sunday ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV,
10:04which allows fans to watch
10:05and wager on their favorite teams around the league.
10:07YouTube is the home of the NFL Sunday ticket,
10:09which gives fans access to live out-of-market
10:11Sunday afternoon games throughout the NFL season.
10:14And those new customers again,
10:15bet the $5, you get the three weeks for a free trial.
10:19Drew, how'd you get involved with FanDuel
10:21and why are you working with them?
10:23They reached out to me and I've stayed away,
10:27honestly, from the gaming space.
10:30You know, look, we have a winery,
10:32so we're already invested in one vice.
10:34I feel like I should not embrace another vice,
10:37but, you know, they really are,
10:39they're serious about promoting responsible gaming.
10:43You know, this is supposed to be entertainment,
10:44you know, rather than, you know,
10:46they don't want people out gambling,
10:48you know, gambling real dollars
10:50that are going to affect their lives.
10:51And so, you know, that's part of the reason
10:53that I'm with them is to share that message.
10:55Like, hey, bet on your favorite team,
10:56but, you know, bet something
10:59that's an entertainment type dollar,
11:00not something that's a matter to your family.
11:03But it's a pretty cool deal.
11:04I mean, you bet five bucks
11:05and you get three weeks of a Sunday ticket
11:09on YouTube and YouTube TV.
11:12I've been super happy with the move over
11:14to YouTube TV for Sunday ticket.
11:16It just seems like it works pretty seamlessly.
11:19Plus, I think if you're the first time,
11:21if it's your first time jumping on the app,
11:25I think your first five bucks,
11:26you get like 200 bucks bonus cash from FanDuel.
11:30So pretty good deal.
11:31And, but I'm happy with the partnership with them,
11:35mostly because they're trying to be responsible
11:37with what they're doing.
11:38New customers, as you said,
11:39you bet $5 for the first time.
11:41You also received $200 in bonus bets.
