00:00If I'm having to have my shirt off or do something like that,
00:03then I'll definitely change my eating habits.
00:05No sugar, no alcohol, no nothing.
00:07That was one of the joys of Beetlejuice.
00:09The part didn't require it.
00:11Hi, I'm Justin Theroux, and today I'm going to show you
00:13what my diet looks like.
00:19I try and eat healthy, eating mostly plant-based,
00:21although I'm not great at it.
00:23But I think I allow myself one sort of big cheat day,
00:25sort of pancakes, waffles, that kind of thing a week.
00:28I'm not a big supplement person.
00:30I try and maybe fish oils or something like that.
00:32But I've been trying that sort of mushroom craze,
00:34that sort of like lion's mane and things like that.
00:37And I actually have noticed a difference in my energy.
00:39I don't know if it's going to last,
00:41but they seem to be working, actually.
00:46Definitely start with a bottle of water,
00:48usually in the shower.
00:50I try and drink a bottle of water before I have anything else.
00:53Then I have a green juice,
00:56which sounds like I'm being too good for whatever,
00:58but I do usually have a green juice and a cup of coffee.
01:01Then I try and work out.
01:03And then quickly after working out,
01:05I try and get some kind of a smoothie, protein shake, taco.
01:08Then I snack in the afternoon, usually an apple,
01:11a piece of dark chocolate or something like that.
01:13Dinner's usually sort of a jump ball,
01:15and I try and do it before 8 o'clock
01:17and try not to snack after that.
01:20My workout is one of two things.
01:22I either go boxing for about a half an hour
01:25to get sort of a cardio workout,
01:27and then I hit weights as hard as I possibly can
01:29for the next 20, 25 minutes.
01:31And that's it. That's my workout.
01:33And then obviously living in New York City,
01:35I try and walk and bike as much as possible everywhere,
01:38not take cabs or Ubers.
01:40Yes. I mean, it depends.
01:43If I'm having to have my shirt off or do something like that,
01:46then I'll definitely change my eating habits.
01:48I think anyone does.
01:50Probably the strictest I ever was, and this is going way back,
01:53was to Charlie's Angels when I was just eating
01:56sort of very, very low carbs.
01:58I was sort of trying to be, like, extremely thin
02:01and sort of wiry.
02:03The inspo was like Iggy Pop,
02:05and that was probably the strictest I've ever been in my life,
02:07where, like, I just absolutely no sugar,
02:09no alcohol, no nothing,
02:11and just tried to get as minimal body fat as possible.
02:15That was one of the joys of Beetlejuice.
02:17We were all in sort of, like, heavy black clothes,
02:19and the bar didn't require it.
02:23You know, I'm one of those people that's sort of weird
02:25and forgets to eat, so I can have those sort of
02:28mid-afternoon, like, low-blood sugar moments.
02:31It's not that I'm trying not to eat,
02:33but I don't eat usually in the morning.
02:35I usually just have coffee and a juice,
02:37and then once I get to work, I'll try and have
02:39some sort of a protein or legume or bean
02:41or something like that.
02:43One of my favorite go-tos is just sort of a poached egg
02:45with some beans and some hot sauce.
02:47And then it's usually whatever catering has,
02:49some salad or a piece of fish.
02:51But on sets, it's weird.
02:53You can go for these, like, long seven-hour stretches
02:55where you just sort of forget to eat,
02:57and that's usually a problem,
02:59because the first thing that obviously presents itself
03:01is, like, a craft service table
03:03where there's things like, you know,
03:05sour cream and onion Pringles
03:07and things that are delicious.
03:09So I try and eat little meals all throughout the day.
03:15No, I don't think so.
03:17I'm always, like, you know, you work with some
03:19fancy people in this business,
03:21and I'm not that fancy, so a lot of times
03:23they'll have, like, a chef or something.
03:25So usually they'll have, like, something really bespoke
03:27made for them at lunch.
03:29And so I have, like, sort of, like,
03:31creeped up on people that have those chefs,
03:33and I'm like, what is that weird nori wrap you're eating?
03:35And they're like, oh, my chef makes them,
03:37and then they give them to you.
03:39And then you're like, I'd love to have that tomorrow.
03:41So then you try and basically get in on
03:43whatever their chef is making for the day.
03:45I don't find my diet that hard, to be honest.
03:47I sometimes will, like, lapse into eating,
03:49like, ice cream or something,
03:51but that's usually short-lived.
03:53I try and not eat a lot of sugar.
03:55And then once you cut the sugar out of your diet,
03:57the diet sort of falls into place,
03:59meaning, like, I don't, I'm not having, like,
04:01massive cravings throughout the day or anything like that.
04:03It's really just about
04:05not getting the frickin' dessert menu
04:07or putting something in your refrigerator
04:09that you know you're gonna want to eat later on.
04:11And then workouts, I don't know.
04:13Like everybody, I think I dread a workout sometimes,
04:15a lot of times.
04:17But then you've hit these, like, little jags
04:19where you're stoked to go workout.
04:21You realize that it's such a gift to yourself
04:23to be able to move your body like that.
04:25It's like therapy, you know?
04:27Like, you never leave a workout bummed
04:29that you did it, usually.
04:31I'm always excited after I've done it.
04:33Smooth, raw.
04:35My favorite carb, like everybody, is bread.
04:37And usually if that bread has
04:39tomato sauce, cheese,
04:41and pepperoni on it,
04:43that carb is excellent.
04:45But I think bread would have to be my favorite carb.
04:47My go-to comfort, there's these,
04:49I forget what they're called.
04:51It's like a beef bowl with white rice
04:53and simmered white onion.
04:55I forget what it's called.
04:57What is it called?
04:59Someone's gonna be smart and figure it out and put it up.
05:01It's like Yoshinoya bowl or something.
05:03Obviously mac and cheese is a go-to.
05:05Oh, and grilled cheese sandwiches
05:07with tomato soup.
05:09I don't know what my last meal on Earth would be.
05:11My answer is like pizza with everything on it
05:13because then I could have everything on it and it could be anything.
05:15It would probably be something in the Italian,
05:17you know, that region.
05:19Nothing beats a Joe's Pizza in New York City.
05:21Usually when I'm out of town for a long time,
05:23the first stop I make is Joe's Pizza.
05:25Or John's. Or Prince Street.
05:29Burgers are one of those things that I'm trying to work out in my diet.
05:31But if I was gonna order a burger,
05:33this is gonna sound like I'm being, again,
05:35like a goody two-shoes, but I really do
05:37like those sort of fake meat
05:39burgers, those impossible burgers.
05:41But if it's a red meat burger,
05:43it's just a straight-up smash burger
05:45with cheese and
05:47just fried onions on it.
05:49Tomato sauce.
05:51Like, without question.
05:53Coming into any house that has
05:55a nice, big, thick, it's been cooking for an hour or two,
05:57with garlic and onion
05:59and basil is a fantastic smell.
06:01Also just straight-up onion.
06:03Like if you're just making onions,
06:05you know, reducing them,
06:07that's a fantastic smell.
06:09Oh my god, I don't know.
06:11Some of my characters are insufferable.
06:15Um...
06:17I can't...
06:19I can't think of one that's likable enough
06:21that I'd want to hang out
06:23with them.
06:25I'm Justin Theroux, and that's what my
06:27diet looks like.
