00:00Hi kids! Today we will learn what is length, units of length, and how to measure length.
00:11So let's get started!
00:14Kids, here are a few keys.
00:19Here, which key is longest?
00:25Orange key is the longest here.
00:29Which key is shortest here?
00:33Green key.
00:35Green key is the shortest here.
00:41Orange key is how much longer than green key?
00:46Can you answer?
00:49We know that orange key is longer than green key.
00:55But we can't find out how much longer.
00:59For that we need to find the lengths of the keys.
01:04So let's learn what is length and how to find out the length of an object.
01:14Length is the measurement of distance between the two endpoints.
01:22Measured units for measuring length are meters and centimeters.
01:30Where one meter equals 100 centimeters.
01:36We measure smaller things in centimeters and bigger things in meters.
01:44Let's have a look at some examples.
01:49Here are a few things.
01:54Let's see.
01:55We will measure them in centimeters or meters.
02:02Pencils.
02:03We will measure pencil in centimeters.
02:09Door.
02:12We will measure door in meters.
02:16Notebook.
02:18It's a small thing so we will measure notebook in centimeters.
02:24Room.
02:26We will measure length of the room in meters.
02:31It's a big thing.
02:34Eraser.
02:37We will measure eraser in centimeters.
02:42It's a small thing.
02:45Pen.
02:47We will measure length of a pen in centimeters as it's also a small thing.
02:56Tree.
02:58We will measure length of a tree in meters as it's a big thing.
03:06Now let's find out lengths of a few things.
03:12Here we have two pencils.
03:16What is the length of the red pencil?
03:20Let's find it out.
03:24The length is the measurement of distance between two end points.
03:32And here the distance between two end points that is one point from where the pencil starts
03:41and one point where the pencil ends is five centimeters.
03:48So the length of the red pencil is five centimeters.
03:55Now what is the length of the yellow pencil?
04:01The length of the yellow pencil is eight centimeters.
04:07As the distance between its two end points is eight centimeters.
04:15Now which pencil is longer red or yellow?
04:23The yellow pencil is longer as it is eight centimeters long.
04:29Whereas red pencil is five centimeters long.
04:36Yellow pencil is how long than the red pencil?
04:43Whenever there is a question to find out how long find the difference between the two lengths.
04:53Here the difference is three centimeters.
04:58So yellow pencil is three centimeters longer than the red pencil.
05:09Now let's take another example.
05:13Here we have three things, a paper clip, a glue and a key.
05:20What is the length of a paper clip?
05:24We know length is the distance between the two end points.
05:30So first mark the two end points that is the starting and the ending of a clip like this.
05:40Now place the scale and count how many centimeters are there between the two end points.
05:51There are three centimeters.
05:55So length of the clip is three centimeters.
06:03What is the length of the glue?
06:06We know length is the distance between the two end points.
06:11So first mark the two end points that is starting and ending of a glue like this.
06:22Now place the scale and count how many centimeters are there.
06:31Here are nine centimeters.
06:34So length of the glue is nine centimeters.
06:42What is the total length of glue and clip?
06:48To find the total length, we will add the lengths of both things.
06:55Here the length of clip is three centimeters and length glue is nine centimeters.
07:05Adding both we get twelve centimeters.
07:10So the length of both clip and glue is twelve centimeters.
07:21How many paper clips will add up to the length of one glue?
07:28Length of one paper clip is three centimeters and length of glue is nine centimeters.
07:37Here divide nine by three to get how many threes are required to make nine.
07:47Nine divided by three equals three.
07:53So three clips will add up to the length of one glue.
07:59Good!
08:01Now these things are smaller.
08:05So we will calculate their lengths in centimeters.
08:11But in case of bigger things, we calculate lengths in meters.
08:18Here are a few examples.
08:22Here is an image with some lengths mentioned.
08:27Let's answer a few questions based on this image.
08:32What is the length of the tower?
08:36The length of the tower is sixty-eight meters.
08:42What is the length of the tree?
08:46The tree is thirty-two meters shorter than the tower.
08:52So sixty-eight minus thirty-two we get thirty-six.
09:00Hence, height of the tree is thirty-six meters.
09:07Now let's have a quick revision.
09:12Length is a distance between two endpoints.
09:17We can measure length in centimeters or meters.
09:23We measure length of smaller things in centimeters and bigger things in meters.
09:35One meter is one hundred centimeters.
09:39So two meters will be two hundred centimeters.
09:45Three meters will be three hundred centimeters.
09:50Likewise, one hundred centimeters is one meter.
09:57Two hundred centimeters plus two hundred centimeters equals four hundred centimeters or four meters.
10:08So kids, now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
10:13Bye-bye!
