00:00The government has emphasized the importance of protecting against agricultural smuggling in the country.
00:05This is the story of Clazel Pardilla.
00:09Shabu-shabu ingredients are being used again in these 5 containers that arrived at Subic International Terminal Corporation.
00:18But after opening and inspecting the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Customs,
00:23smuggled carrots and white onions arrived from Hong Kong.
00:29144 tons of cargo came from China.
00:34There is no certificate of product registration and no sanitary or phytosanitary permit.
00:40The products are proven to be legitimate and safe to eat.
00:44This is similar to the last onions that arrived last month in a warehouse in Navotas
00:50that turned out to be positive for high levels of chemicals and e-coli or bacteria from human or animal dung.
00:58When we were opening the boxes and inspecting the quality, it seems to be the same quality as what we saw in Navotas.
01:05For our safety, food safety, we are not sure what is the origin of this.
01:11What is the process that it went through.
01:13So, it is already risky, it is already high risk.
01:17And then second, for the local industry, of course, we do have production.
01:22If this gets into our markets, there will be a little disruption.
01:27Of course, the price may go down because our market will be flooded with illegal goods.
01:35Aside from vegetables and rice, there are other products that were approved by the operatives.
01:40Two more container vans were opened by the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Customs.
01:46This shipping container is one of them.
01:48In front of it, there are tissues.
01:50But after being removed one by one,
01:52this is where the smuggled cigarette boxes from Taiwan were discovered.
01:58Cigarettes are worth Php 115 million.
02:03That is why more than Php 130 million were confiscated.
02:08The consignees will be fined and face several cases.
02:13They are doing smuggling to basically avoid taxes as far as tobacco is concerned.
02:22Onions and carrots can take advantage of the price in the Philippines versus other countries.
02:30The importers will be blacklisted.
02:33And in order to stop the fight against agricultural products,
02:38the DA will ask the Congress and Senate to raise Php 200 million to the Enforcement Bureau of the agency
02:46from the current amount of Php 50 million.
02:49The DA will punish the smugglers.
02:52The Bureau of Customs and the Department of Agriculture are on top of the situation.
02:56All of these will be chased.
02:58That is the order of our President.
03:00Kalei Zalpar, Delia, for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
