00:00Steve became paralysed in a diving accident at the age of 18. At the end of August 2024
00:11he's doing a fundraiser to raise money for Air Ambulance by going round Cornwall. Support
00:16Air Ambulance Cornwall. Support Steve.
00:19I'm here to talk to you about a guy called Steve who is down on the groan there. You
00:26should be able to see him because he's in a wheelchair with a helicopter attached to
00:30the back. Steve, my predecessor, is Mayor and tomorrow he's starting on a journey all round
00:39Cornwall to raise money for the Air Ambulance. So Steve is a good guy. Anything you can do
00:47to support him or spread the word. It's called the Cornwall 500. It's got a Facebook page
00:52and website. Let's make sure that Steve's journey flies. Thanks a lot. Take care.
01:01Ladies and gentlemen, let's bring cheers to Steve who is in his wheelchair. Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!
01:10Good luck Steve. Carry on. Good luck.
01:13Does Steve want the mic for five seconds? Yes he does. Two seconds. Can you pass that to Steve? Thank you.
01:21Steve, have you got the mic? Can we hear you?
01:30Put my hand round it. Ok.
01:35I got it. Brilliant. Thank you.
01:38We're getting there. Ok, today we're celebrating life. Just a quick one.
01:4333 years ago I was lying in the hospital bed and a guy turned up next to me and he'd been
01:49in a wheelchair for 15 years. And at that point I thought, I could never do that.
01:5533 years later I'm about to embark on a journey that I never thought I would make.
02:01500 miles, celebrating life in his wheelchair. One that was very easy to do four years ago
02:10by friends of mine. And I can't think of a better way to celebrate friends coming together
02:16like today to give me something to give back. The Cornwall Air Ambulance has just had its
02:22busiest life on record. 99 call outs more than three a day. And without people donating
02:30it's not them that saves lives, it's you guys that saves lives. It's the donators.
02:36Without people putting their hand in their pocket they would not be able to save anybody.
02:41They wouldn't be able to give life to people like me.
02:44So I will be going all the way around Cornwall celebrating what they do, celebrating living
02:50life just the way we are today, the way we want to do it, independently the way I do it.
02:56So just go to the Cornwall 500 on any social media, apart from X maybe.
03:06And just live life. Enjoy it, enjoy the day, the sun's out, let's really have a good time.
03:14Give a shout out to Stephen Wentley.
03:17Thanks to Cornwall Pride Org and all the heroes that support Pride in Cornwall.
03:23Logo music is by Jasmine from Plymouth, Poor Little Children.
03:28The Global Pride event came on the back of the Stonewall Wire about 50 years ago.
03:32Always remember why that happened.
03:36That was New York, America.
