00:00After a 5-month deployment in Sabina or Escoda Shoal,
00:04the BRP Teresa Magbanua has returned to its home port.
00:08Let's go back to what happened during the maintenance of our ship in the wake of Patrick de Jesus.
00:18BRP Teresa Magbanua is one of the largest ships of the Philippine Coast Guard.
00:23It was just deployed in Sabina or Escoda Shoal in the West Philippine Sea in April
00:29to monitor the possible reclamation of China
00:32due to the damaged coral reefs that were found.
00:36Escoda Shoal is only 71 nautical miles from Palawan.
00:41Ayungin Shoal is near here, where the BRP Sierra Madre is stationed.
00:47Last June, the crews of the PCG in the BRP Teresa Magbanua celebrated the Day of Freedom
00:55and raised the Philippine flag high despite the presence of Chinese ships.
01:01China praised the BRP Sierra Madre for following the BRP Teresa Magbanua.
01:08Last July, a video released by the Chinese-owned Tabloid
01:13from the China Coast Guard showed the construction materials brought to the Philippine ship.
01:20The last shipment of cookies was questioned.
01:24Last July, when the BRP Teresa Magbanua faced China Coast Guard's Demonster Ship,
01:33the PCG challenged it.
01:35China Coast Guard Vessel 5901 within the vicinity waters of Sabina Shoal.
01:42This is Philippine Coast Guard Vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua, MRRV 9701.
01:50You are sailing within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone.
01:55What is your intention? Over.
01:57If we compare the BRP Teresa Magbanua, which is 97 meters long,
02:03the Demonster Ship of the China Coast Guard is more than half,
02:07which is 165 meters long and 12,000 tons heavy.
02:13The tensions in Escoda Shoal increased.
02:17Last month, food and other necessities became critical
02:23because the humanitarian resupply mission to the BRP Teresa Magbanua was halted
02:28after the two PCG ships of the China Coast Guard,
02:33Chinese Maritime Militia, and People's Liberation Army Navy were shut down.
02:38China was alarmed when the BRP Teresa Magbanua resupply mission was halted
02:44by the PCG helicopter.
02:47The CCG also sailed here and the Philippine ship was removed from Escoda Shoal.
02:55At the end of August, the China Coast Guard's ship was repeatedly hit by the BRP Teresa Magbanua.
03:03The PCG ship was hit by a heavy bullet where a small part of it was pierced
03:10because of the wreckage.
03:13Until yesterday, the BRP Teresa Magbanua returned to Palawan
03:18after a five-month deployment in Escoda Shoal.
03:22Also because of the bad weather and the lack of supply,
03:26the China Coast Guard was shocked.
03:29PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Hill-Gavana appraised the crew of the BRP Teresa Magbanua
03:36when the ship returned to Palawan.
03:39You have accomplished your mission.
03:44Keep it up.
03:47The Coast Guard will never abandon its role to protect what is ours,
03:54peacefully and legally.
03:57Because we can and we must.
04:01The four crews were in good condition and needed to be medically evacuated
04:06due to dehydration, stomach pain, and arthritis.
04:11According to Commodore J. Tariella,
04:13the BRP Teresa Magbanua crew ate only porridge for a month.
04:19They also drank only rainwater.
04:24While taking a break from the air-conditioning system,
04:27the desalinator system of the ship was damaged
04:30so that fresh water can be produced.
04:32Because of the prolonged stay and usage of the desalinator machine,
04:36it would require brand new filters.
04:40So that we can say that the salt water it converts is potable drinking water.
04:46Because of its duration, fresh water is no longer produced.
04:52Despite the departure of BRP Teresa Magbanua from Escoda Shoal,
04:56the PCG decided that no part of the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines will be used.
05:04The PCG also assured that the Philippines will continue patrolling the West Philippine Sea
05:11even though the ship that may return has not been determined as part of the operational matter.
05:17We have not lost anything.
05:20We did not abandon anything.
05:22Escoda Shoal is still part of our exclusive economic zone.
05:26We can deploy vessels anytime we like.
05:29We can go there anytime we like.
05:31In addition to Tariella,
05:33there is no comparison between the incident at Escoda Shoal
05:36and the standoff at Scarborough Shoal or Bajo de Masinloc in 2012.
05:42Escoda Shoal is large, with an area of 137 square kilometers
05:48or equivalent to four cities in Metro Manila.
05:52There are also different lagoons that can be patrolled.
05:56Compared to Scarborough Shoal,
05:58where the entrance is already placed by Chinese floating barriers.
06:02Escoda Shoal is composed of two lagoons on the west side and eastern side.
06:08And each lagoon has different areas where you can pass through.
06:12So, this is entirely different.
06:14When BRP Teresa Magbanwa left,
06:17the PCG said that there are currently 11 Chinese maritime militia vessels in Escoda Shoal.
06:24There are no ships of the China Coast Guard and PLA Navy.
06:28The PCG also assured that the country can still stop them
06:32even if there is a tanker reclamation of China.
