00:00Rice prices come tumbling down once the latest batch of imported grains begins to flood the market,
00:06and the country's farmers need not worry or dread about lower farmgate prices for their unhusked grains or palay.
00:13The NFA will fill in the gap to ensure they get a fair deal on their yield.
00:17Our Clayzel Pardilia tells us more.
00:22As the rice harvest season begins,
00:25the Federation of Free Farmers has expressed concerns about the impact of imported rice entering the country at reduced tariffs.
00:55Because their inputs have increased, like abolo, gasoline for irrigation, and then they will recover from El Nino.
01:07From January to September this year, more than 3 million metric tons of imported rice have arrived in the Philippines.
01:15Approximately 26.7 percent, or 800,000 metric tons of this total began to enter the country in June.
01:23following the issuance of an executive order that lowered tariffs on imported rice.
01:28The Federation of Free Farmers warns that if this trend continues and coincides with the peak of the harvest season,
01:36it could severely impact local farmers.
01:54The supply in the market is too high. The price of rice will fall further.
02:00They will return the tariff to 35 percent.
02:03Because there is no need for imports at that time because they are importing a lot.
02:10The subject of the discussion is that Secretary himself recommended that there will be a periodic review,
02:20during the implementation of the EO62.
02:23But this is a very early stage to really determine the impact of the EO62 on pricing and the effect on the farmgate price.
02:34The National Food Authority has pledged to purchase farmers' harvests at fair prices.
02:40The agency has an additional 11 billion pesos in funding,
02:44which will suffice to buy over 7 million sacks of palay in the last quarter of the year.
03:11That's what our farmers expect from the NFA.
03:15That price is more than enough for them to earn a good income.
03:21The palaya procured by the NFA from the farmers is used for government relief operations during disasters.
03:28The Department of Agriculture has previously reported of 2 million sacks of rice stored in NFA warehouses across the country.
03:36This is part of the preparations of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.'s administration for La Niña
03:42and to ensure a sufficient supply of rice in times of emergencies or calamities.
03:48Kalei zalparadilya for the new and better Philippines!
