00:00Better get a backup running back in here.
00:05Oops.
00:06Let me look at our practice squad, our practice squad, Keyshawn Vaughn, it's a name to watch
00:13out for.
00:14Keyshawn Vaughn is getting a lot of buzz, he's got some wiggle, got some wiggle to his
00:19game.
00:20Keyshawn Vaughn.
00:21Okay.
00:22Keep an eye on him, because I don't know if Isaac Corindo's ready for the load to be a
00:25backup running back, his shiftiness or whatnot.
00:27I've heard mixed reports about him, but you better get a backup for Jordan Mason.
00:34You want him to carry the ball?
00:35I mean, we didn't even want Crystal McCaffrey, who was the best player on offense in all
00:39the football last year, who touched the ball all the time.
00:43Jordan Mason, he said it after we went, I don't know how McCaffrey does this.
00:47This is tough.
00:48He's already had 48 carries through two games, better go get another backup running back.
00:52Better go do that.
00:55Well, they need to get right, right.
00:57And they got to win this one.
00:58I've been thinking about it long and hard, it's only week two.
01:03This game's huge.
01:05You can't lose to the Rams and give them life.
01:07They're missing a million people.
01:10You're missing a lot of people, but you have enough parts to be able to move the ball on
01:14offense.
01:15And defensively, like you got to get going here.
01:19And if you look at the back end of the schedule after week five, it gets really hard.
01:24Arizona gives you fits.
01:26The Chiefs are very difficult, clearly.
01:29Look at who you're playing.
01:30Real quick, because I'm a sicko.
01:32And during the break, I was looking at K-State, Michael Bishop.
01:36So in 97, they finished number three in the country.
01:39They lost to Nebraska that year by 30, but they only lost one game, won the Fiesta Bowl.
01:44The next year, they were number two in the country, playing in the Big 12 championship
01:47game.
01:48Lost to Texas A&M, not Texas, it was Texas A&M, 36-33, and derailed their season.
01:54Michael Bishop was a cool guy.
01:55Just K-State knowledge here.
01:56We can talk about Bishops, Bishops, Bishops.
01:58I'm a sicko like that.
01:59I was watching those games.
02:00Those games were fun.
02:01This guy was good.
02:02I was rooting against K-State because I didn't like Kansas.
02:04We're a Kansas state.
02:06I didn't like their purple, but you know, it is what it is.
02:09That's my K-State talk.
02:11Watch out for them in Pro Bowl.
02:13Matt Lively, River Islands.
02:15You don't like that, don't ask.
02:16Come on, man.
02:17That's good knowledge.
02:18Michael Bishop, who pulls that?
02:19What radio host knows who Michael Bishop is?
02:21I don't know if it's good knowledge.
02:22Yeah, it is.
02:24It is certainly knowledge.
02:25It is very good.
02:26Michael Bishop was a bad, bad man.
02:28Matt Lively, he's a bad man on KPIX.
02:30He saved the show.
02:31Joins us on River Islands Guest Line.
02:33This show's been a wreck.
02:34All guests on 95.7 appear on the River Islands Guest Line.
02:39It isn't time for you to discover the islands, River Islands and Lathrop.
02:42However, Matt Lively, Verdict Land, they got something cooking.
02:45They got something cooking at KPIX.
02:47My man was out in Minnesota looking dapper.
02:50Matt, what's happening?
02:51Good morning.
02:52What's up, guys?
02:53Thanks for having me on.
02:54Thanks for the compliment.
02:55You know, you got to get a new suit jacket every once in a while.
02:57Hey, sometimes you do.
02:58Look, you keep the weight off.
02:59I have a trouble.
03:00I have trouble with that.
03:01So, you know, I have my suits tailored.
03:03There's no going back.
03:04I mean, you know, maybe out of some money this year.
03:06Anyway.
03:07All right.
03:08You're at practice.
03:09You've seen what's going on here.
03:10Let's do it.
03:11We'll just talk about Jordan Mason.
03:12Let's just start there.
03:13I know it's not sexy.
03:14We'll get to the sexy stuff with the party and the shithead and the swords and all that.
03:17All that jazz.
03:19But back it up, Jordan Mason, because he's on pace for four hundred and eight carries.
03:23He's been a great story to start the season.
03:26But if he goes down, who would get the call to be the backup running back, especially
03:31without Devo Samuel?
03:32Yeah, I mean, that's concerning, right?
03:35Isaac Gurindo would be the guy you think because they traded up.
03:40They literally traded up in the fourth round to go draft this guy.
03:45But him getting one snap last week and he gets a no gain and then he's out of the game
03:50immediately.
03:51It does not bode well for the confidence there and what they're seeing past Jordan Mason.
03:55They went out and they signed Patrick Taylor, Jr. from the Packers, who hardly played last
04:00year.
04:01They had Matt Breda for a second in preseason and then let him go.
04:04And Keyshawn Vaughn is on the practice squad.
04:06And he's a guy that was in Tampa for a long time and really didn't do much with his opportunity.
04:11So the Niners should either be looking at a trade market or bringing back Breda or really
04:16giving some heavy snaps to Isaac Gurindo here moving forward.
04:19Because if something does happen to Mason and we've seen injuries happen all over the
04:23field in the National Football League this season, Gurindo better be ready to step up
04:28and go.
04:29And Kyle Shanahan doesn't like playing rookies a ton.
04:31So you got to do something there to get Gurindo into the mix more often than he's been.
04:37How's Talanoa Hufanga look at practice yesterday?
04:41Looks fine.
04:42I mean, he's been out on the field for a few weeks now, whether it's been off to the side
04:48or just running drills.
04:50But the fact that he is a full participant, he's ready to go.
04:54They wouldn't put him out there if that wasn't the case.
04:57And we saw what Justin Jefferson did to a couple of safies in George Odom and Jair Brown
05:04on Sunday on that 97 yard touchdown reception.
05:06It's going to be such a boost having Hufanga back there this week, especially what a game
05:12to ease them into.
05:13You don't have Cooper Cup or Pukenuku out there as the Rams.
05:16This is going to be a cupcake game.
05:18Oh, I like that, Matt.
05:20That's what I'm talking about.
05:22That's what I'm talking about.
05:24Sports Anchor, Channel 5, KPIX, Matt Lively.
05:28Hey, Matt, let me tell you, last week I was trying to tell Saski, it was a trap game,
05:32and he said, oh, they're going to be saved, Arno, by 20.
05:34So you do what you do, Matt.
05:36I love the bold take.
05:38I love the bold take.
05:40Now, Leonard Floyd was invisible in this game.
05:42Early downs.
05:44Gross mottos maybe on early downs here.
05:46But what happens to George Odom now that Hufanga is easy to go straight to special teams?
05:50Will Mustafa get more runway and safety?
05:52What's going to happen there once Hufanga does get back into the mix?
05:55I'm ready for Malik Mustafa to play more of a role.
05:58I know it was just preseason.
06:01But God, this guy delivers a boom when he's out there.
06:03This is a captain in college at Wake Forest.
06:06This is a guy that's ready to step in and go.
06:08We saw them throw Zyre Brown in last year.
06:11And he played well with the opportunity.
06:13Sure, there were some rookie mistakes.
06:15And it felt like a rookie mistake on Sunday on that Jefferson play.
06:18But Malik Mustafa's probably ready.
06:20Odom's still ahead of him on the pecking order.
06:23But someone probably gets a special teams call.
06:26Maybe it's Malik.
06:27Maybe they move George over.
06:30All I know is Talanoa's coming back.
06:31So someone's getting the boot.
06:32That's for sure.
06:33Who's returning kicks?
06:35It's Jacob Cowling still.
06:37That's what Shanahan pretty much indicated yesterday.
06:41That muff is bad.
06:43And I've seen a couple of Jacob Cowling muffs in practice.
06:47But at this point, Debo's now hurt.
06:50You're not going to throw him back out there.
06:52It felt like they were drafting Isaac Garindo to maybe be set up for a return role.
06:57Because he is fast.
06:59He's one of the fastest guys at the combine.
07:01Someone that would sort of remind you of Raheem Moster.
07:04But they haven't really been giving him those opportunities to be back there returning.
07:08It's usually Debo and Cowling.
07:10Or sometimes Kyle Juszczyk is back there on the kickoff.
07:13So on punt returns, I would still expect Jacob Cowling to be the guy to go to.
07:17Matt, there's been a lot of talk about Brennan Ayuk.
07:19And we're going to magnify every pass thrown his way.
07:22Targets, drops, catches, does not matter.
07:26And it's not the Shanahan way to maybe force feed a wide receiver.
07:30I would think this week you want to get him 10 targets here.
07:34What is the conversation around Brennan Ayuk?
07:36What are you seeing at practice here?
07:38Do you believe this could be the coming out party for Brennan Ayuk in 2024?
07:42You hope so.
07:44I asked Brandon after the game on Sunday.
07:46The production isn't where you would probably want it.
07:50And he kind of downplayed that.
07:52He didn't think that was all that true.
07:55The numbers aren't speaking for where he's actually at on the field.
07:59We've seen the separation numbers in the advanced metrics.
08:02And the Niners rank in the bottom half of the league.
08:05And where their wide receivers are getting separation.
08:07Which is making it tougher for Brock Purdy.
08:09But all I'll say is this.
08:11If you just got paid $120 million.
08:13If you sat out the entire preseason.
08:15All of training camp.
08:17And now Debo Samuel is hurt.
08:19And Christian McCaffrey is hurt.
08:21It better be your coming out party.
08:23After Brennan, you've got Jawan Jennings.
08:25Who is great.
08:27You still have George Kittle.
08:29It's not like this offense is lacking weapons.
08:31But Ricky Pearsall isn't ready to go.
08:33Jacob Cowling might have to take more of a role.
08:35You might see Chris Conley out there more.
08:37But those aren't the sexy names that you want when you're thinking of the 49ers.
08:39It is Brennan Ayuk or Buss this week.
08:41He's got to have a big game.
08:43To get his confidence up.
08:45To get this offense back in rhythm.
08:47Because through two weeks.
08:49At the two games I've seen.
08:52He's had up with some really aggressive runs.
08:54That pick up in 11 yards.
08:56But there have just been some really sloppy moments.
08:58That this offense has kind of been bailed out at times.
09:00I thought Brock had to throw into tight windows last week.
09:02He's checking the ball down a lot.
09:04Especially to Kyle Juszczyk.
09:06Who's been involved in the passing game.
09:08Brennan Ayuk has got to open up something on the back half of the field.
09:10Real quick.
09:12You brought up those separation numbers.
09:14Where was Brennan Ayuk at individually?
09:16Or do you just have it as a team?
09:18I just have it as a team right now.
09:21From what I'm seeing.
09:23But Brennan Ayuk.
09:25Last year.
09:27That was his bread and butter.
09:29He was getting open deep.
09:31And Brock was making those throws.
09:33And we have not seen a home run ball.
09:35So far through two games.
09:37Where you're going alright there it is.
09:39The deep threat has been established.
09:41I just haven't seen that through two weeks.
09:43What's it feel like this year versus last year?
09:45Just being around the team.
09:47Because there's like an aura.
09:50There's like a vibe if you will.
09:52If last year was one way.
09:54How is this year?
09:56I don't think the vibe changed all that much.
09:58And I mean.
10:00That's not that big of a shock.
10:02Considering this is almost a carbon copy of the roster they had last year.
10:04I don't think much has changed.
10:06I know during preseason a lot was made of.
10:08You've got Trent.
10:10And you've got Brandon holding out.
10:12And that's going to impact this team.
10:14And the chemistry.
10:16But that's nothing new for the Niners.
10:18It was Nick Bosa the year before that.
10:20And Debo Samuel the year before that.
10:22And they made it to an NFC championship.
10:24And then a Super Bowl in those seasons.
10:26So I think the aura is just fine.
10:28It's tough coming off a loss.
10:30When you're in that visiting locker room.
10:32And those guys want to get out of there.
10:34As soon as humanly possible.
10:36The aura never feels very good in there.
10:38But we still had Mooney Ward.
10:40And Diamador Lenore joking around.
10:42And George was funny in the post game.
10:44Like this team is fine.
10:47It was a bad loss on Sunday.
10:49But the vibe, the aura is completely OK.
10:51Were you surprised?
10:53Because you asked the question.
10:55And then you posted.
10:57But were you surprised Charverius Ward was so candid
10:59regarding wanting to mirror the number one wide receiver
11:01from the other team?
11:03Surprised only because we don't get answers like that
11:05from athletes often.
11:07But it makes sense that it came from Mooney.
11:09Because he is kind of an open book.
11:11And he'll tell it straight.
11:14But I thought his answer was perfect.
11:16I didn't understand why he wasn't shadowing
11:18Justin Jefferson this entire game.
11:20Remember that Seattle game last year
11:22where he held DK Metcalf.
11:24It's like he didn't even suit up.
11:26It was like he was invisible.
11:28And when you have a guy like Justin Jefferson.
11:30And you have their number two option
11:32and Jordan Addison not playing in that game.
11:34I didn't understand why it wasn't Mooney.
11:36And then they brought over help for a double.
11:38I mean he should be the guy that's going to
11:40be the number one wide receiver.
11:42He should be the guy that is on the top receiver
11:44every single game.
11:46He is an all pro for a reason.
11:48No, that's a great point.
11:50That was a great question there in the locker room.
11:52We were surprised there.
11:54So Nick Sorensen.
11:56You know Eric Crocker.
11:58I'm sure you've seen him on Twitter.
12:00He covers the Niners.
12:02Last year he came on the show and said
12:04Shanahan is really the defensive coordinator.
12:06He's the guy who wants guys to run his scheme or whatnot.
12:08So Nick Sorensen is on the sideline.
12:11It was probably once too many here.
12:13But how much heat do you think Sorensen
12:15or when will the heat start to ratchet up for him?
12:17Because there was so much talk
12:19about Steve Wilkes last year, Matt.
12:21The talk on Steve Wilkes
12:23last year
12:25happened really quickly.
12:27And at first it was
12:29we don't want this guy up in the box.
12:31And then it was
12:33now he's down on the field.
12:35He still doesn't have enough energy.
12:37And it was Shanahan having to call a timeout
12:40There was a lot of tension last year.
12:42If you look at
12:44week one was great.
12:46He held Aaron Rodgers in check.
12:48Week two, had Fred Warner
12:50not come away with a couple of Superman plays
12:52the final score of that game
12:54is probably a lot different
12:56than what it actually was.
12:58That was a much closer game than it ever should have been.
13:00And I think Fred really bailed out the defense
13:02on a couple of stops.
13:04I think if you come into this next schedule
13:06where they have
13:08the Rams, and then the Patriots
13:10and then the Cardinals
13:12if you have three bad defensive performances
13:14the heat is going to get turned up.
13:16And I don't think the Niners necessarily
13:18make any sort of move
13:20but the fans are not going to respond well.
13:22Matt, unlike Marco Luciano
13:24when you got called up to the morning roast
13:26you delivered.
13:28I mean you are on fire right now
13:30but just ask somebody
13:32you're relatively newer to this market
13:34and you see the Niner fan fervor
13:37Ask that guy.
13:39I'm sorry.
13:41Go ahead.
13:43I think the West Coast, San Francisco
13:45you guys are soft, soft Niner fans
13:47Niner fandom is out of control.
13:49These people are insane.
13:51I'm one of them, believe me.
13:53I'm at the forefront, losing my mind
13:55quarter to quarter, play to play, no doubt about it.
13:57It's kind of underrated how crazy
13:59this roller coaster is
14:01following this particular team.
14:03They're out there, the Niners.
14:06They're insane.
14:08I've tried to explain to people
14:10I came from, to give you guys some background
14:12covering Big 12 football
14:14and there's a lot of hostile environments
14:16in that part of the country.
14:18When you go down to Levi's
14:20when you're in those tailgate lots
14:22when you're posting on social media
14:24these fans are rabid
14:26in the best way possible.
14:28The love for this team
14:30and rightfully so
14:32for the run that many of these fans
14:34grew up watching with Montana
14:36and Rice and Ronnie Lott
14:38this is a passionate fan base
14:40and there isn't a lot of room for error
14:42especially when they've had some of the success
14:44that they've had over the last 10 years or so
14:46they are demanding at this point
14:48a Super Bowl
14:50and you see it when you travel on the road
14:52I went to LA last year for that game
14:54so if I was completely red
14:56I was in Arizona last year
14:58I couldn't believe pre-game
15:00how many fans completely covered
15:03Matt, the Cardinals don't have fans
15:05welcome to the NFC West
15:07no I know I get what you're saying
15:09but I guess let me ask you this one then
15:11from the outside looking in
15:13and you've been on this beat for a couple of years now
15:15you're seeing this thing
15:17what do you see that Niner fans
15:19do say about a player or a coach
15:21that you think is just wild?
15:23I don't get the Kyle Shanahan hate
15:25I understand he has not
15:27delivered on the Super Bowl
15:29but I say this all the time
15:32there are 29 teams
15:34there are 29 teams
15:36and the only ones I'm not counting
15:38are the Chiefs
15:40the Rams
15:42and maybe the Ravens
15:44who aren't calling Kyle Shanahan
15:46the second he walks out of Levi's Stadium
15:48and gets on a plane out of Santa Clara
15:50to come hire him
15:52he is an offensive guru
15:54he's a very good head coach
15:56and I do not understand the hate for that man
15:58I mean it's been
16:00and I was labeled a Shanahan hater
16:02but I've never once said that he should be fired
16:04at all
16:06not one time in my life
16:08Matt we have a drop on this show
16:10it's Shanahan
16:12but I've never said
16:14fire Shanahan
16:16but you know all these people that's coming around
16:18mad about his clock management
16:20week 2 in Minnesota
16:22well I could point to Atlanta
16:24and a couple years ago
16:26I could point to Arizona
16:29but I've never said
16:31fire Shanahan
16:33I don't get the hate either Matt
16:35there is a real element of the clock management
16:37stuff is a bugaboo
16:39and from the 917
16:41we'll always get these texts
16:43you guys never mention
16:45that your boy genius
16:47Shanahan in the last 7 years
16:49of his playoff losses
16:51has been outscored 95-24
16:53in the 4th quarter
16:55that's crazy
16:58listen
17:00there's a reason he's probably been outscored
17:02it's typically because his teams are up
17:04in games and they can take their foot off the pedal
17:06I also would like to just point out
17:08do we forget that stretch
17:10from 2000 to 2011
17:12pre Harbaugh
17:14where the Niners couldn't win anything
17:16you've got a head coach that other franchises
17:18would die for
17:20and you pair him with a GM
17:22who has put together one of the most loaded
17:24rosters year after year
17:26I just do not understand where
17:28some of this hate comes from
17:30it's wild Matt
17:32welcome to the Bay Area
17:34where are you from by the way
17:36the quick breakdown
17:38originally from Florida
17:40went to school at Arizona State
17:42so I do know something about the Cardinals
17:44and you're right
17:46Arizona sports are not great
17:48but now I bounce all over
17:50and I'm happy to land here in the Bay
17:52you do love Tucson
