00:00I don't know why I said that. No, I like that. Matt, it's probably Matt. I should just say Matt Chapman. We did it!
00:04Matthew, we beat the White Sox. No, we hit 20 home runs. Oh, yeah. Well, that's gonna happen. We did it!
00:1020 home runs. We did it!
00:12Throw a party?
00:14Uh...
00:16Get the pleasantries out of the way, because I got some Chapman thoughts.
00:18Oh, okay. All right, all right.
00:20Go ahead, give me the thoughts. I want to hear them now.
00:22Don't rush me with the pleasantries, Shasky.
00:24All right, so here are the Chapman thoughts.
00:26You gotta have a veteran on this team who understands how to prepare at the big league level.
00:34And somebody that has cachet. I'm not here to say that he's some star. He's not a star. He's not.
00:40He's a really good everyday player. That's what he is.
00:44I read this long-form article about Stephen Vogt and the Cleveland Guardians.
00:49It was in The Athletic. And why Stephen Vogt has been resonating with the Cleveland Guardians.
00:54And I found it very interesting.
00:56Missed the ball on that one.
00:58Well, that's a whole other conversation.
01:00But I found it very interesting that every single person, Vogt, some of the guys on his staff,
01:05Albernez, who's like his assistant, their catcher, Austin Hedges, everyone to a man said to themselves,
01:13the guy who sets the tone for everyone falling in line behind Stephen Vogt is Jose Ramirez.
01:19And so I'm not here to say that Matt Chapman is on the same level as Jose Ramirez,
01:23because Jose Ramirez is going to be probably a borderline, if not Hall of Famer someday.
01:28But when I look at how this team has been constructed over the last six, seven years,
01:32I think you're looking at the best everyday player maybe since Buster Posey on the Giants.
01:38And now that's not saying much because they haven't had a lot of those.
01:41But to pencil him in every single day and to kind of know what you're getting from him defensively,
01:46he made a play near the awning, the fence, the whatever, the netting that they call it.
01:50It was a great play. He has been a really, really, really good Giant.
01:54Do I want to give him a seven-year deal? No. Do I want to give him a three-year deal and have him stay?
01:59Yes, I do. And I think Matt Chapman has had a really good year this year,
02:03and it's going to get lost in the sauce, but I'm really enjoying Matt Chapman every single day.
02:07We'll see what happens with this contract. He's 31 years old, 20 home runs, 62 RBIs.
02:11Now, you leave guys around him. I'm not mad at him.
02:14We interviewed him early in the season, came away very impressed with what Matt Chapman is,
02:18what he's all about, the way he goes about his business.
02:21He's a pro's pro. Every single day you're going to get full-out effort from him.
02:26I'm not mad at Matt Chapman. You've got to sign somebody.
02:28You've got to have somebody in this lineup now. You need to build around them.
02:31So I'm not mad at Matt Chapman. By the way, good morning and oh, baby, oh, baby, oh, baby.
02:34Good morning to all the graveyard shift workers, all the overnight dancers, everybody out there,
02:39888-957-9570. We're going to do a vibe check with the 49ers a little bit later.
02:44By the way, shout out to our friends at Flowing Water Plumbing and Drain.
02:47If you're going to call it to the roast, you better bring it because if you don't,
02:49you will be flushed. Brought to you by Flowing Water Plumbing and Drain.
02:52And we're qualifying two more people today to have breakfast with the roast September 6th on a Friday.
02:57That's right. We'll kick off the football season Friday, September the 6th,
03:01and we'll have breakfast right here at 8570 Games.
03:03So listen, all this week between 730 and 8 o'clock, we have 10 spots we're giving away.
03:08We have eight left. We're going to give away two of those eight today between 730 and 8 o'clock.
03:13And when you hear this sounder, be the 10th caller and you win a spot for breakfast with the roast.
03:21Breakfast will be provided by Jack's Restaurant.
03:23So Chapman's been a nice story for the Giants. Ramos has been a nice story,
03:27even though the batting average has slipped to 279. Fitzgerald is a good story.
03:31Lamont Williams Jr. goes two for three. You beat the White Sox, the lowly White Sox.
03:35And I'm sure people were saying, uh-oh, in the fifth inning when they took a 1-0 lead.
03:39And I'm sure people were saying, uh-oh, in the ninth inning when Jordan Hicks was on the mound.
03:43He didn't know where the ball was going. He got a little erratic at times.
03:47I don't think he knew where the ball was going.
03:49Thankfully, Kirk Casali knew where one of those pitches were going,
03:52although he threw a wild pitch, a very nice pitch.
03:55But you were able to survive and win a game against the White Sox, and now you're one game over .500.
04:00Kyle Harrison did what he had to do against the White Sox.
04:02I thought he was good in this game.
04:03He looked solid. He was solid.
04:04Can you get the guy some run support early in a game so that he can pitch the lead?
04:07Yeah, no doubt.
04:08That would be something I would love to look into.
04:10How many innings has he gone out onto the mound where he's had a lead?
04:13Yeah, not many.
04:14Not many.
04:15And so you were talking about Kirk Casali.
04:18I really like Kirk Casali.
04:19He had a big hit in this game, finally broke the seal to drive in some runs.
04:24But, Bonta, he can't throw out anyone.
04:26I mean, he needs a cutoff to throw from catcher to second.
04:29It's so bad.
04:30It's not good.
04:31It's so bad.
04:32Now, a combination of that is the Giants struggle holding runners on.
04:35They don't throw over, really ever.
04:37And all of their guys have a high leg kick.
04:39And so they're doing their catcher no service in terms of trying to slow down a runner.
04:44But that being said, like, Casali's arm, poor guy, I like him a lot.
04:48I mean, he's a liability defensively.
04:50A win like that, you're playing the White Sox.
04:54And that was my focus when I was watching the game.
04:56Because, in my opinion, I was like, the Giants got to win this game.
04:59Now, you're five back in the loss column to the Atlanta Braves.
05:02They just lost to Osser-Reilly for quite some time.
05:04I could do them in.
05:05He's a star third baseman, all-star.
05:07Six to eight weeks.
05:08Yeah, it's not good for the Braves.
05:09They've just been littered with injuries to big boys.
05:11Albies, Ronald Acuna Jr., Austin Reilly, and Spencer Strider.
05:16Just brutal, brutal for the Atlanta Braves.
05:18Yet, they're still hovering eight games above .500, still trying to get into the playoffs.
05:22Now, you're three back in the match.
05:23They come back, and they beat the Orioles yesterday with a walk-off.
05:26So, look, I'm not going to sit here and berate everybody with playoff talk,
05:29playoff talk when it comes to the San Francisco Giants.
05:32But my focus yesterday was just on the White Sox and how bad they are.
05:37They're historically bad, folks.
05:3930-96 on the season.
05:42Again, they've won 30 games, and we're midway through August.
05:46There's 35 games left for the Giants.
05:49They've got to get to 43.
05:51I don't know if they're going to get there.
05:53I don't know if they'll get there.
05:54Now, they may sneak one in here.
05:55They beat the Yankees last week.
05:57They beat the Astros in a game last week.
05:59Sneak one in.
06:00They may sneak one in.
06:01You hope they don't sneak one in at Oracle Park.
06:03Can you say that record again?
06:0530-96.
06:07Just wild to listen to.
06:0930-96.
06:11It is August 20th, and they have 30 wins on the season.
06:15Now, they do have a baller, Luis Robert Jr., and you think that—
06:19Is he a baller, though?
06:20Well, he's just—I mean, he's lost.
06:22He's got all the talent in the world.
06:24He's got all the talent in the world.
06:27He's hurt all the time.
06:28He's 27 years old.
06:30He's a guy I take a chance on.
06:32But you look at the power.
06:33Last year, he hit 38 home runs.
06:35The year before, he only played 98 games.
06:37The year before, he only played 68.
06:38So injuries have really derailed his career.
06:41But you see the talent.
06:42You saw the talent last season.
06:44You saw the talent his rookie season.
06:46He's got speed.
06:47He's got 18 solo bases this year.
06:49He has power.
06:51You've got nobody batting around you.
06:53You're batting 216.
06:54I don't know.
06:55I don't know.
06:56But I look at him saying—I'm looking at him and I'm saying,
06:58take a chance on a guy like him.
07:00Yeah, I don't know.
07:01I'm very iffy on him.
07:02I was looking at another player, the Santa Rosa kid, Andrew Vaughn,
07:05and I was just looking at some of his advance numbers,
07:08and he got off to a really slow start.
07:09Was red hot in June, cooled off big time in July,
07:13and then is red hot again in August.
07:15And I'm saying to myself, like, he could not play on a worse team.
07:19Well, he's a first baseman.
07:20He's got some okay power.
07:22I mean, geez louise.
07:24In 2023, he hit a career-high 21 home runs.
07:27Not bad.
07:28Not bad at all on 152 games.
07:30I like Andrew Vaughn.
07:31He's not bad.
07:32I mean, he's the number three overall pick.
07:34It's pretty incredible.
07:35It is incredible.
07:36But has he lived up to that?
07:37No, no.
07:38But I would also say that, you know, just the situation
07:41and the organizations, they might be—as bad as we rip the A's,
07:45the White Sox might be worse at developing and sustaining talent.
07:49Well, you can make that same argument for Luis Robert Jr.
07:51I mean, the guy did hit 38 jacks last year.
07:54I mean, 38 jacks is nothing to scoff at.
07:56I mean, for the last time, we had somebody hit over 28 home runs.
07:59Hunter Pence hit 28, I believe.
08:0128.
08:02And I think—
08:03Belk hit 29.
08:04Belk had 29.
08:05He hit 29.
08:06That's right.
08:07He got 29.
08:08He got stuck.
08:09He would have been the guy who hit 30 home runs for the first time
08:10since Barry Bonds.
08:11There was Bonds, 27 in his final year, and then I believe
08:14Uribe and Huff hit 26 in 2010.
08:17Yeah, 26, 25, something like that.
08:19Huff had a really good year in 2010.
08:20He had a great year.
08:22I was just looking at how does an organization become that bad?
08:26To me, that's the story.
08:28How bad the White—that's a proud—
08:30Now, they've had some up and downs over the course of my lifetime, of course,
08:34but that's a proud organization for the most part.
08:36Their gear always sells.
08:38A lot of people wear White Sox hats.
08:40They've got some really cool colors.
08:42When they went to that colorway, the black and white with the pinstripes,
08:45it's like, wow, the rebranding was really good for the White Sox.
08:48Now, I told Lubbock that Lubbock's been to this yard.
08:51You forget they're in Chicago
08:53because you go to Wrigley Field and it's sold out
08:55and it's a lot of fun and Wrigley Field and everything,
08:58and you go to the south side of Chicago.
09:00Guaranteed right field.
09:02The atmosphere of Chaska, you want to talk about just—
09:05There's my elite.
09:06San Jose Giants may have a better atmosphere than the White Sox
09:09in where they play.
09:10So, did you see the movie The Saint of Second Chances?
09:14It's a documentary.
09:15I believe it's on Netflix.
09:16I could be wrong, but it's about Veek,
09:19the owner of the White Sox during the 70s.
09:21No, no, I've never seen it.
09:23So, your point about, like, proud franchise, it really wasn't.
09:25I thought it was more because it's an older franchise, obviously.
09:28And when he took over, Mike Veek, this is,
09:32he was the guy who came up with the disco demolition.
09:35He was a legitimate Chicagoan.
09:37And this is the era of owners where they didn't have a lot of money.
09:41He took out all of his money to buy the team,
09:43and they didn't have anything.
09:45And so, they treated that team in the 70s like they were a minor league team.
09:50So, there were different draws on what would try to get crowds going there
09:53and whatnot.
09:54And so, to your point of, like, I think in our minds,
09:57the White Sox brand, because of, I think, hip-hop and culture,
10:01the White Sox logo kind of means something.
10:04It does.
10:05But, like, within baseball, they've always been a laughingstock
10:08outside of a couple of pockets of winning.
10:10Yeah, they've been up and down, right?
10:12I mean, they had Jack McDowell, Frank Thomas,
10:14and they made the playoffs in the early 90s,
10:16and then they fell off the cliff.
10:18And then, of course, they went in World Series in the mid-2000s
10:21with Ozzie Ginn.
10:23Now, Tony La Russa helped turn that program around in the 80s
10:25before taking the ace job.
10:27But really, they've been this team that you think that, boy,
10:30they've got a lot of talent.
10:31They spend money on some big-time free agents,
10:33and they always underachieve.
10:35Now, they've underachieved to astronomical levels this season.
10:39And you can blame Tony La Russa for the downfall of this team
10:41when they did have things rolling.
10:43Jose Abreu, they had Eloy Jimenez, they, you know,
10:46who's Yoan Moncada, who's always hurt.
10:51I mean, I just couldn't believe I'm watching that game thinking,
10:55Matt's just staying up watching this team.
10:58You're a White Sox fan.
11:00Are you staying up late on the Midwest to watch that baseball team?
11:03It's interesting you say that because the boss lived in Chicago for a long time.
11:06He's a big Cubs fan.
11:08Oh, thank you.
11:09He's a big Cubs fan.
11:11I asked him, like, are the White Sox like the A's in terms of coverage
11:15and, you know, where they stand in the market?
11:18He's like, no, they're actually worse.
11:19Yeah.
11:20And I'm like, really?
11:21He's like, yeah, because at least the A's have players that everyone likes.
11:24The White Sox were horrible, horrible.
11:26They won it in 05 with Juan Uribe, who we referenced earlier.
11:30But outside of that, I mean, they've had zero sustainability over the years.
11:35And then obviously, you know, moving out of Comiskey,
11:38and they've been trying to get out of there for, what, 25 years?
11:42Well, they built that yard, the new Comiskey, and it's just as bad.
11:46It's nothing there.
11:47U.S. Cellular.
11:48What is it even called now?
11:49It's Guaranteed Rate Field.
11:50Guaranteed Rate Field.
11:51Guaranteed Rate Field.
11:52And Anna and I went out there to a Royals-White Sox game on a Friday night.
11:55It should be Guaranteed Lost Field.
11:56It should be.
11:57That's not bad.
11:58$5 tickets.
12:00They had a statue of Carlton Fisk.
12:02They had a statue.
12:03And then they had their little.
12:04Was he in biker shorts?
12:05He was not in biker shorts.
12:07This was part of the Bill Vick.
12:08He was, like, experimenting with things of how he'd get people to go,
12:11and they went to the shorts.
12:12I know.
12:13It's crazy.
12:14I know.
12:15I kind of liked it, not going to lie.
12:16This is different.
12:17I was like, do they rock shorts for real in a game?
12:19This is wild.
12:20It is wild.
12:21It's such a bad look.
12:22I mean, the new Comiskey could be farther away from.
12:26I mean, it's on the south side of Chicago, and it is out there.
12:30We took the subway out there and, you know,
12:32got $5 tickets to a Royals White Sox game, and it was just sterile.
12:36They had their own version of, like, the patio of, like,
12:39what the public house looks like across the street.
12:41Nobody was in there.
12:43It was pretty nice, but nobody.
12:44Like, why would anybody drive down?
12:46They need to be closer to the city.
12:48If you want to get the White Sox brand rolling and threaten the Cubs
12:52bread, you've got to get closer to the skyscrapers.
12:54You've got to build closer to Soldier Field.
12:56It is just so out there.
12:58So, I always wondered how Matt Koski and Bob Fitzgerald became
13:01White Sox fans instead of Cubs fans.
13:03I live with these people.
13:05I love these people.
13:06They're part of my family.
13:07No, seriously.
13:08The White Sox is part of Fitz's family.
13:10They're part of Matt Koski's family.
13:12For a major market, Chicago's had a lot of losing over the last 25 years.
13:16Oh, my gosh.
13:17I mean, I know they got Michael Jordan,
13:18and so that kind of, like, retcons a lot of the misery.
13:22But the Bulls have not been good for a long time.
13:25No, not consistently.
13:26You think about Derrick Rose and the woulda, coulda, shoulda.
13:29And those teams were good.
13:30Like, the Joakim Noah, Lewald Dang, those teams were very fun.
13:34Ben Gordon was Air Force, Kirk Heinrich.
13:37They've been bad for a long time.
13:38And then the Cubs have been hit and miss, I would say, for quite some time.
13:42I know they're the lovable losers, but when we were growing up,
13:44they were good in the 80s, and then they had their moment in the late 90s,
13:47especially with Sammy Sosa, the early 2000s with Dusty.
13:51Like, they've been relevant.
13:53The White Sox have been irrelevant outside of the 05 season.
13:55So relevant.
13:56And then the Bears, now they've got Caleb.
13:58But, I mean, one Rex Grossman season.
14:02They've had a couple playoff moments.
14:04Jake Cutler got to a conference.
14:05The double doink.
14:06Yeah, the double doink.
14:07They've had a couple playoff moments, but they're offensive in that team.
14:11Lackadaisical quarterback play.
14:14So they're hoping that Caleb can bring them some promise.
14:17They're hoping that the Cubs can turn things around.
14:19Now, Wrigley Field looks nice.
14:20At least you go out there and you feel like watching Major League Baseball.
14:23The atmosphere is great.
14:24It's an iconic venue.
14:25The White Sox is just—
14:26It's really tough to match.
14:27You know, that's a good call with Matt DeHegan about the A's and the White Sox
14:31being a two-team market.
14:32Now, the White Sox are not leaving anytime soon.
14:34Well, no, no, no, no.
14:35No, no.
14:36We don't think they're going to leave, but they are flirting with Nashville.
14:39They are flirting.
14:40Yeah.
14:41What's the guy who owns the Bulls?
14:42Come on.
14:43Oh, Jerry Reinsdorf.
14:44Reinsdorf has been flirting with other cities.
14:46He's looking for a handout.
14:47Him and the Bears were trying to do a joint venture.
14:50A joint venture.
14:51Yes.
14:52To Arlington, and then that kind of broke apart.
14:54The Bears would be smart to have nothing to do with the White Sox.
14:56Right.
14:57The White Sox would try to latch on to the Bears.
14:58Exactly.
14:59And build their own thing and be competitive.
15:00Exactly.
15:01And the Bears are like, you know, we're kind of Cubs fans.
15:03You know what I'm saying?
15:04Maybe that's what they're thinking.
15:05What are you—
15:06Reinsdorf, if Reinsdorf did move that team, that would be criminal, because I do think
15:09Chicago could support two teams.
15:11And, like, the Cubs, you know, the south side of Chicago is like, you know, blue-collar.
15:16If anybody watched Shameless and you've ever been out there, now you've got to be
15:19safe out there on the south side.
15:20There's no doubt about that.
15:21It's one of the most dangerous cities.
15:22One of the most dangerous cities in America.
15:23Yeah.
15:24Well, dangerous areas in America, no doubt.
15:26Hundreds of murders a year.
15:27Yeah.
15:28Oh, trust me.
15:29I know.
15:30I know.
15:31Sad.
15:32Every day on X, there's videos that pop up on my feed, and I'm just like, wow.
15:34It's not a great scene.
15:35Not a great scene at all.
15:37So, I don't know, man.
15:39I just—I was watching them thinking, how can a franchise stoop to that level?
15:42Now, we got the A's in our own market.
15:44But I'm looking at the White Sox, and I'm just saying, they are 30-96.
15:49I couldn't focus on the Giants.
15:51To me, they better win that game, right?
15:53There's no, like, fist-pumping for beating the White Sox.
15:55I'm not, like, saying, like, whoo, we got one.
15:57I'm going to be real, though.
15:58One game over .500.
15:59Harrison needed that bad.
16:01He did.
16:02He just needed that.
16:03Like, the kid needed a W.
16:05He needed to, you know, go up against a garbage team.
16:09And that—well, on the other side, we've got to talk about something.
16:12Lamont Wade Jr. not being able to run.
16:14Like, I was triggered last night seeing that.
16:17You got triggered with this kid?
16:18There was a microcosm of everything that drives me crazy with this organization.
16:22There was nothing that could possibly trigger me about that game.
16:25Nope, nope, nope.
16:26There was something that triggered me.
16:27And I want to talk about it.
16:28There was nothing, because to me, it was just—it's the White Sox.
16:31They're 30-96.
16:33When you close your eyes and you say, the White Sox, who's the player?
16:36Because I know exactly one thing.
16:37Frank Thomas.
16:38What?
16:39Me, Frank Thomas.
16:40I completely agree.
16:41The Big Hurt.
16:42Frank Thomas.
16:43Paul Kinnear Jackson later on in his career.
16:44Scott—what's his name?

16:54Harold Baines.
16:55Harold Baines is a—that's a really good call.
16:56Harold Baines.
16:57Paul Kinnear, a low-key Borlaugh—
16:58Paul Kinnear had a great career.
16:59He had a great career with the White Sox.
17:00I think 300-something home runs.
17:01439.
17:02He was a Dodger.
17:03How many?
17:04439 home runs.
17:05I knew he was over 300.
17:06The Dodgers got rid of him.
17:07Kinnear was a beast.
17:08Dodgers got rid of him.
17:09Tomé.
17:10Adam Dunn.
17:11Jim Toby.
17:12Adam Dunn was there for him.
