00:00Nightly greetings.
00:06One and all, William Theo here, homegrown and happy to bring you PTV News Now.
00:10We kick off tonight's stories with the latest stroke of the President's pen that has added
00:16a layer of protection to the agricultural sector and cover to consumers from the preparedness
00:23of bad actors in the distribution of supply chain in the industry.
00:28The newly signed law further criminalizes the acts of smuggling and hoarding in the
00:32distribution chain that can get in the way of farmers, fisherfolk getting a fair deal
00:38on their produce, and the Filipino consumer getting stiffed by overpriced goods and produce.
00:44Under Republic Act 12022, agriculture hoarding in particular is clearly defined when a person
00:52or group is in possession of agricultural or fishery products in excess of 30% of their
00:58usual or normal inventory level two weeks after the declaration of crises.
01:04The newly inked piece of legislation supersedes the outdated Republic Act 10845 or the Anti-Agricultural
01:13Smuggling Act of 2016, which lacked the comprehensive mechanisms and teeth to hold bad actors into
01:20account.
01:21This newly minted law aligns with the administration's policy of a robust or more abundant state
01:26of food security and government's ramped-up support for the agricultural sector.
01:32Meanwhile, the Peach State of Georgia is in the southern part of the Union, has long been
01:38ruby red country until then-Democratic President candidate Joe Biden flipped it in 2020 by
01:45a razor-thin margin of 11,780 votes.
01:49And the Trump campaign, with the help from the state's widely popular governor, is confident
01:55to win back and return Georgia to its red and Republican stronghold status in November
02:00as we hear more from VOA's Cain Faribault.
02:06Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Vice Presidential Nominee J.D. Vance shared the stage at a recent
02:11dinner, a show of Republican Party unity, after years of discord between Kemp and former
02:16President Donald Trump.
02:19Atlanta voter Dorothy Harp is not concerned about Trump's feud with Kemp over the 2020
02:24election, which Trump falsely says he won in Georgia.
02:27She's more concerned about the economy.
02:37It's a message Harp takes door-to-door, encouraging members of her community to vote.
02:46In the 2020 election, Joe Biden defeated Trump in Georgia by just over 11,000 votes out of
02:52nearly 5 million cast.
02:54Numbers Georgia's Republican Governor Kemp knows well, as he implored audience members,
02:59including Harp, to vote.
03:01So we cannot take anything for granted.
03:03We cannot take our foot off the gas.
03:06Georgia is fully in play again.
03:08Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, a Democrat, says polls show another close race this year between
03:14Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
03:17People sometimes get disenfranchised by thinking that their vote doesn't matter, but we have
03:21to go out there and make sure everyone knows that their vote does matter.
03:25Listen, every vote counts.
03:27Elijah Grace is with the voter advocacy organization, the New Georgia Project Action Fund, whose
03:32workers go door-to-door to promote voter registration.
03:36We specialize in targeting black and brown people across the state, making sure that
03:41they have all the resources that's needed to cast their ballot.
03:43A 2020 Pew Research Center study showed Georgia's eligible black voting population made up a
03:49third of the state's total electorate.
03:51Exit polls in 2020 showed 88 percent of black voters chose Biden, but recent polls show
03:57Democrats losing ground in this close contest.
04:00Both sides understand that the roads lead through Georgia.
04:04When the race was between Biden and Trump, Grace noticed a lack of enthusiasm among potential
04:09voters.
04:10And since the Democratic ticket has changed, we have seen a strong uptick in support for
04:15Vice President Kamala Harris.
04:17She's at the intersection of color and gender.
04:21Bernice King, daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., believes Harris appeals
04:26to voters previously considering sitting on the sidelines.
04:29Frankly, just speaking as a woman, you know, I think this is a season where we're seeing
04:34more and more women emerge in the critical places of leadership.
04:38Leadership is motivating Harp to back Trump, and she's working to bring others along with
04:42her as Republicans focus on inflation and cost of living concerns.
04:46I have already committed to taking some of the people I know to the polls.
04:51I said, if you ain't got a way to get there, I'll get you there.
04:53Polls open in Georgia for early voting on October 15th.
04:56Kane Fairbaugh, VOA News, Atlanta.
04:59And now, let's turn to PTV's Baguio City Studios and my colleague for what's hot and happening
05:07in the Cordilleras.
05:08Audrey.
05:10Good evening, Philippines.
05:11Thank you to Benguet State University for allowing me to attend the course of medicine
05:16that I am currently attending.
05:20The course of medicine that I am currently attending is the school year 2025-2026.
05:26After attending this year's course, I will be following the procedure protocols of the
05:31prevention of the plastination of the body of the deceased student.
05:37Fifty students will be accommodated for the first batch.
05:40This is a good thing for the students of Cordillera.
05:44Temporarily, the two classrooms of Baruapasdoc College of Nursing will be built.
05:49Construction of the building for the College of Medicine will be completed.
05:54The BSU will be the first state university to be added to the College of Medicine in
05:58the Cordillera region.
06:00The building for now, there was that approved by the General Appropriations Act, 20 million.
06:09We are supposed to establish it.
06:12We were able to have the so-called groundbreaking civil rating at near the fire department office.
06:24I am encouraging especially this Tiga Benguet because if possible, we get one each per municipality.
06:33Then the rest will come from other municipalities, from Baguio.
06:41That's our, because primarily this is for Benguet.
06:44It is a valid paya damag ng rugintipan na haramiti alternate route.
06:49It is said to come to Twin Peaks, Canon Road, Tuba, Benguet.
