00:00Good afternoon, I am William Thieu and this is PTV News Now.
00:08Top on our news leaderboard at this hour, the President inks a piece of preferred legislation.
00:15It is a priority bill of this administration as designated by the Legislative Executive
00:21Development Council or LEDAC.
00:23And earlier today, the President inked this priority piece of legislation in a ceremonial
00:29signing in Malacañang.
00:31Republic Act 12024, otherwise known as the Self-Reliant Defense Posture Revitalization
00:38Act, seeks to ensure an adequate inventory and stockpile of the military's armor and
00:44weaponry through increased manufacturing and or production of arms and military hardware.
00:50The just signed law also seeks to grant preference to locally owned factories or manufacturers
00:56on development, servicing and operation of such hardware or weaponry.
01:03And barely two weeks have passed since tropical cyclone Helene ravaged the southeastern United
01:08States and left a trail of devastation and ruin across four states.
01:13And a more powerful storm is poised to hit Tampa and the western part of the Florida
01:19Panhandle in 48 hours.
01:21Hurricane Milton has reached Category 5 strength and was tracked some 1,300 miles southwest
01:28of Tampa, packing winds of 174 miles per hour and moving at a lazy speed of 15 miles per
01:35hour.
01:36Milton, which turned into a powerful storm on Sunday, is forecast to make landfall in
01:41the western part of Florida Wednesday morning or Thursday evening Manila time.
01:46For his part, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 51 of Florida's 67 counties, under a state
01:53of calamity, warning the storm's major impacts with the storm surges reaching 15 to 20 feet
01:59and more than double of those of Hurricane Helene.
02:03As such, several counties have received mandatory evacuation orders, with more expected to follow.
02:09Tampa Mayor Jane Castor also weighed in, but with a more serious and dire tone, urging
02:16her constituents to evacuate and not tough it out with Milton saying, doing so is betting
02:21against Mother Nature who wins 100% all the time.
02:26An even scarier message and Facebook post by the Taylor County Sheriff pleaded to those
02:32who refuse to evacuate to write their names and personal information with a permanent
02:37marker on their arms or legs for identification purposes in the event their bodies are found
02:42floating or lifeless after the storm.
02:47Beirut and the border towns of Lebanon in the south have turned into a no-man's land
02:51as Israel continues to pound them into a pulp with bombs and missile strikes from the air.
02:57Hence, with flights out of Beirut airport being cancelled and ticket prices going through
03:03the roof, a Turkish port has turned into the escape route of choice out of Lebanon.
03:09VOA's Onur Erdogan has more.
03:14The port town of Tashiju in Turkey's Mersin province has seen an unusual surge of passengers
03:20from Lebanon who are fleeing Israeli assaults and rising tensions.
03:25Ferry officials say the vessels brought more than 600 passengers from Tripoli last week,
03:30raising the total number of recent arrivals to about 1,300 compared to an average of 50
03:36people over the same period of time.
03:38With many flights out of Lebanon cancelled and prices soaring, the ferry service has
03:43become a way for many to flee the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon.
03:48There are no flights and those that still exist are way too expensive.
03:53It is around $900.
03:56That's why I came via sea.
03:58It's also a little expensive, but there's nothing I can do.
04:01We came today from the vessel from the port of Tripoli so I can catch a flight back to
04:06Ghana where I work.
04:08We've been there for seven years.
04:10The trip was, it was our first time.
04:12It was a good experience.
04:13It was hectic.
04:15It was a long trip, 12 hours.
04:17After two weeks of Israeli airstrikes and a ground invasion and Hezbollah rocket attacks
04:22on Israel, hundreds of thousands of people are being forced to leave Lebanon.
04:28The national carrier Middle East Airlines was the only remaining commercial airline
04:32operating in the country as of Thursday, according to the U.S. State Department.
04:38Some here are worried that another wave of refugees will enter Turkey, which already
04:43hosts more than 3.5 million people, one of the largest refugee populations in the world.
04:49The CEO of the ferry line in Tashiju, Ali Toror, says some refugees say they will return
04:54home as soon as possible.
04:58After the latest developments, after Israel's bombings, airlines decided not to send their
05:03airplanes to Beirut airport because of security concerns.
05:07But with attacks continuing and the conflict widening in the region, it is far from certain
05:12how soon the refugees will be able to safely return home.
05:17For Onur Erdogan in Mersin, Turkey, Bejan Hamdard, VOA News.
05:26And that is a wrap for this afternoon's show.
05:28Join us again later on for the evening news break edition, and stay connected by keeping
05:33it here for news you can count on.
05:35I am William Thio, and thank you for watching PTV News Now.
