07:40What can you tell us about her?
07:42So I play Lee Quinzel
07:44That's my version of Harley Quinn

07:48This movie, this story
07:50Really centres around Arthur Fleck
07:52If you saw the first film, you know him
07:54And in the first film, Todd really slowed down
07:56To take a look at Arthur Fleck's life
07:58Somebody that maybe would get pushed aside
08:00Or passed by on the street
08:02To see who he was and what made him Joker
08:04So in this film
08:06He meets Lee, my character
08:08And they fall in love
08:10But she's very different than the Harley Quinn
08:12That everybody has known before
08:14I tried to root her in the reality
08:16Of this film
08:18And create Arthur's match
08:20Who would be the person that he would love
08:22If he stopped for a moment
08:24To talk to her
08:26What would be the storm inside of her
08:28That would make her catch his eye
08:30So that's my Lee
08:32She's got a little bit of a hurricane
08:34Inside her, like the ground is shaking

10:00Yeah, I've always kind of had a relationship
10:02With dual identities through my music
10:04And creating characters on stage
10:06Which was maybe
10:08Unconventional to some people
10:10You know, playing an actor in a film makes a lot of sense
10:12But everybody wants to kind of see you be yourself
10:14On stage, and I am myself on stage
10:16I'm just also something else
10:18And so I was really
10:20Interested in making this film
10:22Because Arthur is this
10:24Kind of incredibly unique person
10:26Who has this affliction
10:28That he suffers with
10:30And the way that people treat him
10:32Where he lives in Gotham
10:34Joker is kind of like
10:36A symptom of his conditions
10:38And I just thought that that was
10:40A really beautiful way to tell the story of Joker
10:42And I thought it was also beautiful for a love story
10:44Who would be the complex woman
10:46That would
10:48Love him completely
10:50And who would, to me, love Joker
10:52And love Arthur too
10:54And Lady Gaga, as one would hope
10:56Music in Folly You Dare
10:58But am I right in thinking that when this goes out
11:00On Friday night, by the time that happens
11:02There will be a new Lady Gaga record
11:04In the world
11:06Yeah, so I was really inspired by my character
11:08Lee, and all the music in the movie
11:10So I decided to make my own album
11:12Called Harlequin, inspired by her
11:14And it's all
11:16Original productions
11:18That I did
11:20To basically define her
11:22Without defining her at all
11:24There's a lot of jazz influence
11:26And I take you through
11:28So many different genres on the record
11:30To me, Harley
11:32Cannot be pinned down, she's a woman that can't be defined
11:34So I was sort of saying
11:36I'll be jazz when I want to be jazz
11:38And I'll be funk when I want to be funk
11:40And then I'll be soul, and then I'll be blues, and then I'll be church
11:42I'll be whatever I want to be
11:44Whenever I want to be it
11:46Because I think women, you know, we want to feel that way sometimes
11:52And the truth is, we aren't any one thing
11:54We're a lot of things
11:56Yes, and we can be all those things
11:58At the same time
12:00The album is called Harlequin
12:02And I think we've got the cover art there
12:08I was lucky enough to hear the album
12:10Because it's not the soundtrack
12:12It's such a joyful album

15:56It's just good to have someone with you to witness it
15:58Just so that you can go, oh my god
16:00It's just a bonkers film
16:02A brilliantly bonkers film
16:04How are you describing it to people?
16:06It's actually almost impossible to fully describe
16:08And you don't want to give it all away
16:10No, but the general kind of gist
16:12Is one, it's
16:14Dealing with ageing
16:16And it, you know
16:18I play a woman who is being fired
16:20From her own show
16:22An actress who has a fitness show
16:24Because she's ageing out
16:26And she gets, you know, sees her face
16:28Being ripped down from a poster
16:30Of her campaign
16:32So everything, she's at the lowest point of her life
16:34And is offered a substance
16:36For a newer, better, younger
16:38Her
16:40But unbeknownst to her
16:42That is not me that transforms
16:44It's another entity that comes out of me
16:46It's like a young clone
16:48We share consciousness
16:50Where can I get it?
16:52You're the problem

21:12I mean I didn't know it would have such an impact
21:14And it's been so replicated
21:16I mean the thing is
21:18It's not like I was the first person
21:20But it's the idea
21:22That we've lived in times where
21:24Once you were that big pregnant
21:26You weren't supposed to remind anybody
21:28That you'd ever had sex
21:30You reminded everyone
21:32I did, yes
21:34And who's in there? Is that Scout in there?
21:36It was Scout when Scout figured out, oh I'm on the cover of Vanity Fair
21:38Oh they saw it right away
21:40They loved it
21:42I mean the reason I did it was for them
21:44Not even for me
21:46It's for each of them
21:48I did it with Annie, with all three of my children
21:50And I heard you talking about
21:52Reading the script for The Substance
21:54And you said it reminded you of reading the script
21:56For Ghost
21:58Yeah because there's something about
22:00When I read The Substance
22:02I thought, wow this could be really
22:04Amazing
22:06Or it could be a fucking disaster
22:08And so of course I had to say yes
22:10And I feel like Ghost was very similar
22:12It's like, okay we're going to do a comedy
22:14A thriller and a romance
22:16Okay, but I think when we
22:18Push ourselves out of our comfort zone
22:20When we do things that make us a little afraid
22:22It always makes us a little better
22:24Even if it fails
22:26And wasn't there a moment when the reviews came out for Ghost
22:28You kind of thought, uh oh, it's not going well
22:30The reviews were disastrous
22:32For Ghost
22:34And then, people loved it
22:36That makes no sense
22:38They were awful
22:40Because it'll survive decades, it'll keep going
22:42Forever
22:44They were awful, and I thought, wow I can't trust myself
22:46Because I actually thought I saw something that was good
22:48And I love that you are a proper collector

28:06Well that's me needing a bowel movement

28:10And realising it takes 2 hours
28:12To get out of the body suit
28:14Can I ask, do they do your hands as well?
28:16My hands were the only thing that was me
28:18It was a full body suit
28:20It was 3 hours of make-up in the morning
28:22And about 40 minutes to take it off
28:24So we can see your eyes
28:26How do you go to the bathroom?

28:30I don't eat breakfast or lunch
28:32That's the most civilised way to answer that
28:34But for a piss, yeah
28:36I was sweating crazy
28:38So you need to have your sat-nav

33:00In a book shop
33:02And I saw that he looked very much like me

33:16And so the book is sort of
33:18Like a mock documentary about my journey
33:20To find Harold Hughes
33:22Harold Hughes doesn't exist

33:26This is so complicated
33:28There's a lot of tension
33:30And so the book is really about this kind of
33:32Ridiculous character
33:34Who stops writing
33:36And there's a mystery as to why he stopped writing
33:38And I'm trying to find out why he stopped writing
33:40So here's the thing
33:42So this is the journey of your documentary
33:44To solve the mystery of Harold Hughes
33:46Who has written
33:48Lots of screenplays, novels
33:50Poetries, all sorts of stuff
33:52But those books exist
33:54So you've also written
33:56All of Harold Hughes screenplays
33:58And you've written
34:00This is the complete works of his plays
34:02Poets, pieces of poetry
34:04And these are his three novellas
34:06And there's words in there
34:08Beautiful pictures of Harold Hughes on the back

35:06So you create a complete fictional world
35:08Kind of like a Salinger Glass family world

35:12I genuinely love their records
35:14I love Spinal Tap records
35:16And I like the documentary
35:18And where sort of comic worlds
35:20Can kind of go out and become bigger
35:22So that was the idea
35:24Is there anything
35:26I'm sure so much of you is in all of this work
35:28But is there any exact
35:30Anecdote or in the stories
35:32Or in your real life
35:34Yes in terms of how lots of people
35:36Find the character frustrating
35:38I've taken that from my life
35:40But did you discover anything
35:42About yourself through this
35:44Well this is the thing
35:46The book really is about
35:48Whether you should keep writing
35:50And in a way I've answered that question
35:52With those books
35:54So I'm announcing my retirement

44:20These are parts of Eastern Europe
44:22that are still not super open to a lot of live music.
44:24So, when you go,
44:26it's the energy, the feeling you get from a crowd.
44:28For someone like...
44:30We don't always play to big crowds like this.
44:32So, that already in itself is unique.
44:34But when you get that unique, genuine...
44:36They're there because they feel this.
44:38Yeah, it's a release.
44:40Exactly. And that was, for us,
44:42very much of a first-time experience.
44:44We're still riding that wave.
44:46People in the UK get to have that experience.

46:44and my friend Roxanne said,
46:46if you look, Brett, it's a monkey.
46:48And I looked and I said,
46:50no, Rox, that's a baboon.
46:52We need to go.
46:54So we slowly backed away,
46:56and we were the only ones on this gorge,
46:58literally looking between death
47:00and this baboon.
47:02And he came up, sat on our table,
47:04he ate every single one
47:06of our cigarettes, except hers,
47:08cos they were the cheap brand.
47:10Then he put his muzzle
47:12into our beers, downed both
47:14of them, and then,
47:16after a good time, just urinated all over the table.
