00:00Hey kids and welcome to the word problem race track. Today we will be answering word problems
00:08to pass checkpoints on the track. In order to pass certain checkpoints we will need to
00:12correctly answer the problems by using different methods to solve word problems. Let's get
00:17racing guys!
00:24Here is our first word problem and it says there are 2 ducks, then 6 ducks join them.
00:29How many ducks are there in all? Hmm, let's read that one more time just to make sure
00:34that we understand what it is asking us. There are 2 ducks, then 6 ducks join them. How many
00:40ducks are there in all? We can start by doing a circle drawing. Circle drawings are faster
00:47than trying to draw all the ducks. The word problem says there are 2 ducks. Let's start
00:51by drawing 2 circles for those ducks. 1, 2, now we have 2 circles representing the
00:572 ducks. Then 6 more ducks join them. I am going to put a break apart line right here
01:06to separate the 2 ducks that were already there and the 6 ducks that joined them. I
01:12wonder how many we have in all. Before we find out I think it would be fun to write
01:16an equation that also goes with our circle drawing and the word problem. We have 2 ducks
01:22that are already there, then 6 more ducks came which means we are going to add those
01:27ducks. We are going to join those 2 groups together, the ducks that were already there
01:33and the ducks that came later. When we add them together we should get a total of how
01:38many ducks there are in all. If you remember the word problem asked us how many ducks are
01:44there in all. It wants us to find out how many there are all together. With this information
01:50can you tell me how many ducks there are in all? We have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. So 2
02:02ducks plus 6 more ducks equals 8 ducks in all. Great job kids! Another cool thing that
02:10I can do is use a math mountain to show the problem. There are 2 ducks, then 6 more ducks
02:17came along and joined them. The 2 and 6 are the partners at the bottom. We have a box
02:24at the top which shows us we need to find the total. If we add these 2 together we will
02:29get our total which is 8. Great job! We just used a math mountain to solve the word problem.
02:36Let's go kids!
02:42Here is another word problem and it says Sam made 5 gingerbread men. Allie made 4 gingerbread
02:48men. How many did they make all together? Remember it is good to read it twice to make
02:53sure we understand the story and what they are asking for. Sam made 5 gingerbread men.
02:59Allie made 4 gingerbread men. How many did they make all together? All together means
03:06they want us to join those 2 numbers together to find out how many gingerbread men they
03:10had in all. Why don't you guys take a minute and see if you can't find out the answer by
03:14using a math mountain, an equation or circle drawings. Try and find the answer.
03:24I am going to start with a math mountain because I like those. We know that Sam had 5 gingerbread
03:29men and Allie had 4 but we do not know how many they had all together. So the total up
03:35top is what we do not know and this box shows we are trying to find the unknown number.
03:40We do know the 2 partners. What are they? 5 and 4. Sam had 5 and Allie had 4 gingerbread
03:48men. If we add the 2 partners together we will get the total at the top of our math
03:53mountain. With this information we can now write the equation. We have 5 gingerbread
03:59men plus 4 gingerbread men equals the total. Great job! To find the answer let's finish
04:05by doing a circle drawing. We know that Sam made 5 gingerbread men so we have 5 circles
04:11here. Now I will put a break apart line before I start drawing the circles that Allie made.
04:18Allie made 1, 2, 3, 4 gingerbread men. We now have a circle drawing and the problem
04:24asks how many gingerbread men did they make all together. If we count all the circles
04:28we get how many? We get 9! There are 9 gingerbread men all together. Great job!
04:38We showed how to solve different word problems in different ways. You are amazing! Now let's
04:43finish this race!
