00:00Hey guys, how are you doing?
00:04I am here trying to get milk from this cow, but the farmer said there are a few steps
00:08to milking a cow.
00:10I did not really listen to them, so I am just going to try on my own.
00:19I guess it is important to do all the steps when you have a problem.
00:23While I go take care of my bruises, why don't you guys learn about two step word problems.
00:29There are many different methods people use to solve word problems, so don't think these
00:33methods are the only ones.
00:35These are just some that help me when I am solving problems with more than one step in
00:38them.
00:41In two step word problems, the first thing to do is find your question.
00:45What question is the problem asking?
00:48We need to know what they are asking us to figure out in the problem.
00:52After you know what the question is, you find your first step or first part to solve and
00:57figure out the answer to that step.
01:00Once you have that answer, you then move on to find your second step and figure out the
01:04answer to that step.
01:06Many times you will need the answer from the first step to solve the second step.
01:10Usually, this will be the last thing you need to do in a two step problem.
01:15Some word problems have more steps, and if they do, just keep solving the steps until
01:19you get the answer to the question in the problem.
01:23Now that we have that out of the way, it's time to bring in some word problems.
01:28Here is our first word problem.
01:30It says, at the zoo, each adult ticket costs $5, and each child ticket costs $3.
01:37How much will it cost for two adults and one child?
01:41The first thing we want to do is find the question, or what the problem is asking us
01:45to find.
01:46The last sentence tells us, we need to find out how much it will cost us for two adults
01:51and one child at the zoo.
01:52Great, now we can start with figuring out the first step.
01:56What do you think the first step is?
02:00The first step is to find out the cost of both the adult and child tickets individually.
02:05Let's start with the adults.
02:07Each adult ticket costs how much?
02:09$5.
02:11We know there are two adults.
02:14We have 5 times 2 equals the letter M.
02:18Wait, what is the letter M doing in my problem?
02:23The letter M in the problem represents the number we do not know.
02:26Instead of having a blank spot, we can use letters to represent a number we do not know.
02:31It can be any letter you want, P, S, N, or M.
02:37In order to find out what M is, we multiply $5 by the two adults, which gives us 10.
02:43Awesome!
02:44Now we want to find the cost of the child tickets.
02:47The child tickets cost $3 each and there was only one child.
02:523 times 1 is what?
02:563!
02:58Good job!
02:59We found out the cost of the tickets for the adults and children.
03:02The next step is finding the last part, which asks us to find the total cost of the two
03:07adults and one child.
03:09What do you think we do next?
03:12The last step is to add both amounts together.
03:15$10 plus $3 gives us $13.
03:20So for two adults and one child, the total cost at the zoo is $13.
03:25Great job!
03:27One thing we can do to make sure we got the answer right is to see if it is reasonable.
03:32What I mean by that is 13 seems reasonable or makes sense to be the answer.
03:37Now what if our answer we got was $130?
03:42That would not seem correct for the amount of tickets.
03:45Looking at your answer to see if it makes sense can help you double check your work
03:49and catch mistakes.
03:51You can also plug your answer back into the equations to see if they are correct.
03:55Let's get another problem in here.
03:58The new problem says Aaron buys four toys that cost $2 each.
04:03How much change will he get back if he gives the clerk a $20 bill?
04:09What is the problem asking us to find?
04:12We are being asked to find the amount of change Aaron will get back
04:16after giving the clerk a $20 bill and paying for his toys.
04:20What do you think the first step should be?
04:24The first step I would do is find out how much Aaron spent on the four toys.
04:29We know that each toy costs $2.
04:33If we multiply the four toys times the $2,
04:36we will get the total amount of money Aaron spent.
04:39The letter P will represent the unknown number.
04:42What is 4 times 2?
04:46The answer is $8.
04:48The next step in the problem is to find out how much change Aaron will get back
04:52after giving the clerk a $20 bill.
04:56Aaron paid $8 for the four toys.
05:00To find the change we need to subtract the $8 from the $20.
05:04What is 20 minus 8?
05:07The answer is 12.
05:09Aaron will get $12 back after buying the four toys that cost $2 each.
05:14Great job, guys!
05:18So I guess the cow does not like me too much at the moment.
05:22Thanks for helping me learn about two-step word problems today.
05:26See you guys later.
05:28Okay, enough. You can get off me now.
