00:00But we got plenty to get to today, including some college realignment and a very bizarre
00:04story on the legal front in sports betting.
00:07So let's touch on those.
00:09But before we begin, rest in peace, Pete Rose passed away at the age of 83 years old yesterday.
00:18Pete Rose just recently had a documentary.
00:21And in addition, of course, has still been signing autographs like he always had in Las
00:25Vegas.
00:26Naturally, he is the hit king.
00:28Not just hits in the history of Major League Baseball, but his career and his life tarnished
00:36by gambling back when he was a manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
00:41Needless to say, his lifetime ban in Major League Baseball and through the National Baseball
00:47Hall of Fame.
00:48Does this end?
00:49Still remains to be seen.
00:51But Pete Rose, one of the greatest players in the history of the game, passes away at
00:54the age of 83 yesterday.
00:57Now this is a bizarre story that just broke recently.
01:01And let's give credit to ESPN for breaking this story, that a former employee of the
01:06Jacksonville Jaguars who stole more than $22 million from their organization while he was
01:12working for them, says that he is going to sue the Jaguars, saying that, I'm sorry, sue
01:21FanDuel, excuse me, not the Jaguars.
01:23He is suing FanDuel and Federal Court on Tuesday, claiming that the sports book exploited his
01:28gambling addiction and also ignored responsible gaming and anti-money laundering protocols.
01:36So this is something we've never seen before.
01:38Let me break it down to you in layman's terms.
01:41Essentially what this gentleman named Amit Patel is saying is that someone should have
01:46stopped him from his addiction and is suing the sports book who took his bets.
01:52Folks, I don't know what's going to end up happening here.
01:54I do not think he stands any chance of winning this lawsuit.
02:00But if you want to read more about it, folks, let's give credit to the people who broke
02:03it over at ESPN.
02:05Crazy story here.
02:06All right.
02:07Let's move forward.
02:08Gonzaga is joining the Pac-12.
02:09It was just announced several minutes ago.
02:12Looks like they will be finally entering the conference they were rumored to enter.
02:16ESPN's Pete Thamel reporting this about 10, 15 minutes ago as they head to the Pac-12,
02:21they joined Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State and San Diego State
02:27in recent weeks.
02:28If you remember a few weeks ago, Gonzaga had said that they would not be joining the Pac-12.
02:32So an about face and we have some crazy stories starting off with you this morning.
02:36Now let's get to the stories that everybody knows because if you watch football, you probably
02:39watched the two Monday night football games last night.
02:42One of them was exciting.
02:43One of them was not.
02:44Let's start with the one that was exciting.
02:46That was the Detroit Lions.
02:47They end up beating the Seattle Seahawks 42 to 29 in this game.
02:51Jared Goff was absolutely perfect throwing the ball 18 for 18.
02:56Also caught a touchdown pass from Amon Ra Saint Brown.
02:59Lions looked like they got things figured out.
03:01The Seahawks were undefeated, so they'll travel back home.
03:04I don't think they'll be too upset after the game.
03:06Dan Campbell didn't seem to realize that Goff was perfect when he was throwing the ball.
03:11Well, I just gave the game ball to somebody else.
03:14So I feel awful right now.
03:18Yeah, no, I I knew he played a heck of a game.
03:22I did not realize he was perfect.
03:24I did not know he was literally 18 for 18.
03:29I mean that but but I knew he played really well.
03:32You could feel it.
03:33And he he really found his rhythm early and I thought he was seeing the field played with
03:38rhythm.
03:39He had to move a little bit in the pocket.
03:40I thought what what really kickstarted him is is the you know, he had to kind of move
03:45in the park got spun around and hung with Jamo and hit him on the hook for the first
03:49time was big man because he was rolling after that.
03:53But just a number of huge throws played with poise guys in the right play, you know, is
03:59a heck of a play on the down in the red zone on the catch good throw by saying, you know,
04:03don't work in that.
04:04So I just thought it was it was excellent, you know, and credit to Ben Johnson to I thought
04:11he called a heck of a games.
04:12It was good game plan and and really everybody on that offense, you know stepped up and found
04:18a rhythm today.
04:19Well, if that was an exciting game on Monday Night Football, I don't know what you would
04:22call this one.
04:23One of the worst games we've seen maybe on Monday Night Football in some years, Tennessee
04:27Titans Miami Dolphins, neither team had their starting quarterback for the majority of this
04:31game.
04:32Of course to a tongue of Iloa on injured reserve Snoop Huntley came in.
04:36He did not play well for Miami will Levis went out in this game and Mason Rudolph came
04:42in and just basically was handing the ball off all game long 31 to 12 was the final and
04:46I understand there are 43 points in this game, but that's a bad beat going over the total.
04:50It was just a disgusting offensive game played from start to finish.
04:54And meanwhile, Miami they can bring in any quarterback that they want.
04:57It feels like they can't get their offense going in any way can't run the ball Tyreek
05:02Hill did not look good in this game.
05:04And now a lot of questions surrounding what Miami may do going forward tongue of Iloa
05:08cannot come off injured reserve still for several weeks.
05:11So Mike McDaniel the head coach of the Dolphins basically says he's looking for any positives
05:15to build moving forward.
05:16I thought the the defense will probably have one play that they're that they're not pumped
05:25about but outside of that I thought it was a step in the right direction.
05:29I think there was, you know, some and you know, I thought Braxton had a had a chance
05:39to to change the momentum of the game.
05:44And you know, I think the the the game could have been a different ballgame had we had
05:52we not had that early turnover on the lateral pass.
05:57So there was some stuff I thought there was there was a couple plays here or there but
06:04ultimately there's nothing good about this situation right now in terms of where our
06:13team wants needs to be and we need to do enough to win a football game against any opponent
06:18and right now that's not the case.
06:20We have to fix that fast.
06:21Yeah, I am like McDaniel did not seem overly optimistic nor did he look up all that much
06:27in that press conference after the game.
06:29Sorry to say.
06:30All right, Christian McCaffrey, folks, get this.
06:34He is going to go down in fantasy football history, possibly as the only player ever
06:40to be taken number one overall in a fantasy football league and not play a single down
06:44in NFL.
06:45I am not kidding.
06:46He went to Germany, has come back.
06:48The 49ers now say that not only does he have Achilles tendonitis in one leg, he's got it
06:52in another.
06:53Folks, we may not see him this year.
06:55Cooper Kopp for the Rams, not going to play this week also.
06:58Brandon McManus, you may remember the story.
07:00He is the former kicker in the NFL who was accused of allegedly sexually assaulting someone
07:06on a plane last year.
07:09NFL has found insufficient evidence to discipline him.
07:12So McManus can now kick again in the NFL and also a fan got into it with Chase Brown, the
07:18running back on the Cincinnati Bengals and the NFL is looking to this right now to see
07:22if they can figure out who the fan was and certainly try and find a way to let this not
07:27ever happen again.
07:29In Major League Baseball, we do have the postseason beginning, but not before the New York Mets
07:33and Atlanta Braves played two games yesterday.
07:35The Mets won the first, the Braves won the second, so both teams are in and the Diamondbacks
07:41are out.
07:42Chris Sale was scratched yesterday with back spasms and it does not look like he is going
07:46to pitch for the Braves in San Diego in that wild card series.
07:51The National League wild card will kick off today.
07:54The Mets play the Brewers.
07:55The Braves play the Padres.
07:57The Brewers are minus 126 in game one of their three-game series and the Padres are minus
08:03164 against Atlanta basically because we have no clue who is going to start for the Atlanta
08:08Braves in that series there.
08:10Meanwhile, the American League wild card series also begins later today.
08:14The Detroit Tigers will take on the Houston Astros.
08:17Tariq Scouble will pitch against Frambois Valdez.
08:19Houston is a slight favorite at home and also the Kansas City Royals will travel to
08:24Baltimore to take on the Orioles in that three-game series.
08:27The Orioles are the biggest favorite of the day today in Major League Baseball at minus
08:31154 and also minus 172 to win that series.
08:37Pat Evans is with us from Legal Sports Report.
08:39We've got that big vote coming in Missouri to see if they legalize sports gambling there.
08:43Folks, this is now I believe like one month away from happening.
08:47So let's get to the very latest there.
08:48It's a story we're going to be covering intensely here on Newswire.
08:51Pat Evans is with us and Pat, the teachers union now speaking out on the sports betting
08:56bill.
08:57Look, this is gaining a lot of momentum on this.
09:00There's some negativity too.
09:01Let's not get it twisted.
09:02I see some articles about this and responsible gaming and look what's happened in other places.
09:08But the more I'm sort of reading about this, the more it does seem to me that they're going
09:12to get the votes that they need.
09:15Yeah, I mean, it's going to be a really interesting month.
09:18As you just mentioned, we're a month from Election Day, which is wild to think about
09:21that this year's flown by and we're there basically.
09:26Yeah, this is going to be a really close kind of issue to watch.
09:30We're seeing tons of people on both sides come out.
09:32Of course, Vanduul and DraftKings have funded $21.5 million and I'm sure there's going to
09:38be more coming in to support this ballot initiative.
09:42And Caesars, of course, is kind of the lone operator on the other side, funding the opposition
09:47PAC with the $4 million donation.
09:49And so this is just a really tight kind of contest at this point.
09:54You know, polling numbers show about 50-52% for, but of course, where are the margins
09:58of errors and what have you.
10:02And this is interesting because the Kansas City Teachers Union came out and said they're
10:06against this amendment, which is really interesting because the campaign for this ballot amendment
10:14is called Winning for Missouri Education, which, you know, they're funding education
10:22with the sports betting taxes, which is 10% and they, you know, there's a study that came
10:27out that within five years you'll get about $38.7 million in taxes or so for Missouri
10:34public education, which both gubernatorial candidates that are up for election in a
10:40month have come in and said, you know, they're for this amendment because they want to help
10:44fund education and that, you know, they both think that, you know, teacher wages need to
10:50go up in Missouri because I think it's about 47th for average teacher pay in the U.S.
10:55So, you know, this is an issue that people are trying to push because they want to fund
10:59education or that's what they're saying anyway.
11:02Well, the Teachers Union in Kansas City says, well, let's slow the roll here.
11:06You know, you can't promise wages based on, you know, fluctuating tax numbers basically
11:14is what they said.
11:15And there were a few other reasons they oppose it.
11:16But just a really kind of interesting take because you've got teachers who would benefit
11:23from this supposedly or, you know, and are saying, well, I don't know about this.
11:29We need to tread carefully.
11:30It'll be interesting to see what other teacher unions in Missouri, if there are other ones.
11:35I'm not quite sure.
11:36I'm not fully, you know, up to date on the teacher unions in Missouri, but maybe I should
11:41be.
11:42See what they do.
11:43The St. Louis Post-Dispatch came out and said they're for the ballot initiative.
11:47So, you know, you've got lots of supporters, not that many detractors yet, but, you know,
11:53opposition campaigns can do wonders or terrible things to campaign.
11:59So we'll see what happens to polling numbers.
12:01I'm sure there's going to be some soon.
12:03I saw the PAC, the opposition PAC has done some polling.
12:08We'll expect to see those numbers soon and we'll see if that they resemble the numbers
12:12that the Winning for Missouri Education has put out.
12:15So it's a big thing.
12:17We're a month away.
12:18Again, something I'm going to be watching very closely as others watch other things
12:23much more carefully on Election Day.
12:25Yeah, it's sort of hard to believe because if I'm a teacher in the state and I'm seeing
12:30my contingents not back this so I could make more money, I don't know that how I would
12:35feel about that.
12:36So I got to say I want to keep an eye on this story as we move forward and get closer to
12:40Election Day.
12:41It doesn't really add up to me.
12:42But all right.
12:43Let's talk about sports advertising for sports wagering in Canada.
12:48We've seen a little bit of a drop off here coming and we know that there's more restrictions
12:51in Canada than they are in the U.S.
12:53Yeah, so this is something I was watching just before coming on here and then wrapped
12:57up just in time.
12:58So I wasn't late for you.
12:59Craig would never be late for you.
13:01But you know, there's going to be another one tomorrow.
13:04Today was just kind of hearing witnesses.
13:05There were two hearings last week where they talked about it.
13:08Tomorrow's is going to be interesting because it's the commission that's going to kind of
13:10be tweaking it with amendments and considering clause by clause and probably voting it for
13:16or against to get out of the committee.
13:18So that'll be an interesting meeting tomorrow night.
13:21Yeah, it's I mean, Ontario has pretty strict, you know, advertising rules and that's been
13:28shown through fines.
13:30I mean, when it first launched in twenty twenty two, there were quite a few fines against
13:34operators, including, you know, BetMGM and PointsBet and the like for TV ads, ads at
13:41transit stations, billboards that, you know, offered promotions or showed promotions.
13:47But in Ontario, you need to opt into ads.
13:51So you can't just get those promos out in the public so that, you know, that's one of
13:55them.
13:56They amended their laws or regulations to prohibit using athletes in advertising except
14:03for responsible gaming ads.
14:05So there's those things.
14:06But then the national parliament introduced a bill last year that this is the one they're
14:11talking about to create a national framework for advertising, because a lot of people have
14:17been fed up with how many ads have come through.
14:21And it's a lot of the same things we've seen in Ontario, some of the same things we've
14:24seen here in Ohio and Illinois, you know, prohibiting the use of free bats and again,
14:32not using athletes, not advertising in places where kids or people under 21 are, things
14:38like that.
14:39And, you know, there's a lot of pushback from the industry, of course.
14:43But they're also saying, you know, we don't need a national framework.
14:47We just need a strong place like Ontario and the rest of the provinces will kind of be
14:52cascaded through that because operators aren't going to make different ads for different
14:56places.
14:58And then the other thing is, is, you know, you've seen a lot of witnesses say, listen,
15:02there was a huge amount of ads because it was a new industry.
15:06But it wasn't that many.
15:07It wasn't in the top 20 advertisers, you know, it's starting to fall off.
15:11There was a broadcaster last week, who was like, you know what, our channels are saying
15:17the demand for this time is already waning, that we don't need to go too crazy on this.
15:23So it's gonna be interesting to see what happens tomorrow.
15:27One thing I took away from it, which was funny, it makes you think because yeah, of course,
15:31we notice all the sports betting ads, when we're watching games and whatever.
15:35But you know, maybe take away how many advertisements there are for pickup trucks.
15:41And then a month later, implement them and see if you've taken big notice of them and
15:46say, whoa, that's a lot of pickup ads and see where it goes from there.
15:49So again, this is going to be an interesting meeting tomorrow where the parliamentarians
15:54are going to go clause by clause to check in to see what happens.
15:58Again, Canada has been a very interesting place for the advertising of sports betting.
16:05This framework, they say they want to kind of compare it or make it similar to what they
16:09have in tobacco advertising restrictions and regulations, which are very, very tight and
16:15you don't see a ton of tobacco advertisements.
16:17So again, just a really interesting thing.
16:19We'll talk about this meeting or the clause by clause thing next week, I'm sure, when
16:22I'm on.
16:23Yeah, a lot of tobacco ads in the 70s there, Pat, but we've gone away from that.
16:28Maybe in the 80s too, I think a little bit, but not now.
16:31Okay, let's end with, this would be great for the Carolina Panthers, give fans something
16:35to root for, I guess.
16:37They're going to tell sports betting and maybe come into their stadium, I think too,
16:41from what I saw.
16:42So regardless of results, at least you can ease the pain with some losing by betting
16:46on some other teams.
16:47Yeah, I mean, it is an interesting thing.
16:50Last week, the Sports Betting Commission regulators approved the beginning of in-person sports
16:57betting in Carolina, which is kind of unique because in a lot of markets we've seen in-person
17:01sports betting start before online sports betting, which North Carolina already has,
17:08or at least at the same time.
17:09So it's, you know, we're almost a year out from when North Carolina got started or I
17:13guess six months or I forget exactly when it launched, but I mean, an in-person sports
17:19betting doesn't make up that big of a chunk of a handle.
17:22So it's really an interesting kind of time for this to roll out, but it'll be fun to
17:26see them anyway, because an in-person sports book is a good time.
17:30It is.
17:31Well, great stuff.
17:32As always, thanks for coming on Newswire.
17:33Always fun to talk to you about these topics.
17:34Thanks again.
17:35Thanks, Craig.
